  1. By comparison, I have a 150 prim boat slip I rent that normally rents for $L450 per week. It’s free for me because it’s at a yacht club where I’m on staff. $L350 per month versus $450 per week is a huge difference, but the old rule about location, location, location matters. This particular location happens to be a sim that is adjacent to Blake Sea, which is still regarded as the best sailing/boating area in the grid. So having it start on the next sim over is a pretty big deal. No need to travel far to get there. It’s also something that is quite scarce. If you’ve ever tried getting a slip right on the Blake . . . Good luck. There are only so many of them and demand seems to far outstrip the supply. Even clubs that are pretty inactive these days have their marina rental areas pretty full. And it’s also a different product from a house boat. It’s a yacht club. It’s a place where dedicated sailors get together. And it’s a place where you can put things you cannot put in a Bellisseria boat slip. The Bellisaria slips are made to hold a small boat. A 65 foot racing yacht lives in my slip. I’m surrounded by similar size boats. They just won’t fit in the Bellisaria boat slips. And, of course there’s also the demographic. There’s a fair number of us out there who rent like this as a way to show support for the sailing community and the people who provide the spaces to do it. I am one of those people. I get this one for free, so I pay for rentals elsewhere at two locations farther away in the sailing estates. Those areas tends to be pretty full too. For the very casual sailor, I imagine that something like these rental slips would not appeal much. They are too expensive and it’s just not that appealing if you’re just going to go sail once a week. So those individuals will probably stick to a house boat with a slip in Bellisaria. But I doubt they ever would have wanted to rent in the yacht clubs anyway. But if you are a serious dedicated sailor, the value equation changes quite a bit. There’s no replacing a spot close to where the action happens. A houseboat with a slip does not replace the immersiveness of basing yourself at a yacht club like one where you might be based in real life. And you can’t support the larger sailing community at all by renting a Linden Home. It’s that type of dedicated sailor who probably rents those expensive slips in the first place. And I don’t imagine they’ll be moving on unless the lab decides to provide a better alternative to the Blake and it’s surroundings. So far I see no effort being made to do that. Bellisaria just provides a different type of product aimed at a different customer meeting a different need in a different place. I don’t see Bellisaria as competition for the rental slips market. I do see it as a place that may prompt people to try sailing. Some of those people might get hooked on sailing and become a little more hard core about it. Hmmm.... I wonder if that’s why attendance at some of the races seems to be going up lately.
  2. I'm sad to read about High Fidelity folding. It was certainly not SL, but I liked it and could see it as a future platform more easily than Sansar.
  3. I can't comment on the Shergood UH-4 Commuter specifically since I do not have one. I was taking the inaugural flight in my newly purchased Shergood S-64 Skycrane. But I imagine as long as it can move at a relatively reasonable speed, it should all be good. It's really neat to see SL from the air. It's a whole new perspective in much the way it is to see the real world from the air. I know we're not supposed to mention person-to-person disputes, but I think we're allowed to say good things and in that regard, I'd just like to say that I'm consistently amazed by all the detailed amazing work that Kelly Shergood and Co. pour into their helicopters and I'm really glad there is somewhere to go for the majority of SL users who want to be able to move around. It allows me to actually make use of this really neat (and expensive!) purchase and allows others to do the same for whatever their personal equivalent may be, whether it be walking around exploring or some other similarly expensive thing.
  4. Perhaps some kind of message sent out via the content packs that also delivered the orbs? Suggestion from someone who has not yet managed to get a spot on Bellisaria. Somehow that old Monty Python skit about the place you can go to so you can get an argument, verbal abuse, or hit on the head comes to mind. 🙂
  5. I've been quite frustrated with flying lately, so I have not done it in a while aside from test flights. But today I took the plunge. I went down to dogbone air strip. I flew across the Bellesaria from there to Expanse of Alberchill sim (no, not a straight due east course) at a speed of about 80 knots continuously climbing and reaching an altitude of 161 meters at the end. Here's a log of what happened as I flew across. [23:30] Now playing: Leann Rimes - How do I live [23:31] LH - Security System: You are in a restricted area. Please leave within 15.000000 seconds. Wow. This short flight was paradise. The one security orb warning I got was far less disruptive because it was not a blue screen popup. I was flying a slow helicopter, so my speed wasn't super high, but I was already out of the parcel before I even noticed the warning. And that warning was even worded less aggressively than many orbs. I daresay I didn't bother anyone the ground and they certainly didn't interfere with me. The worst thing that happened was that I don't quite agree with some people's taste in music. But I imagine we can all survive that. Compliments and thanks to the lab for making it possible to move around Bellesaria. From the comments from other users, the limited use the new orbs have been receiving according to all reports I'm aware of, and the insatiable demand for new Linden homes, I daresay that the new orbs and the continent are fantastic successes. I urge the Lab to repeat this success on the mainland at large.
  6. This might be crazy . . . but it occurs to me wonder if the LI for the new LL security system might be intentional and might be a good thing. LL says they want a social place and that orbs run contrary to that desire. So maybe a little bit of a cost to interfere with or act contrary to the social nature that LL is seeking makes sense. It's not a large cost. But a small cost in terms of LI could be desirable?
  7. I’m a snowland owner. I don’t know of any policy this would violate. And I don’t know where in the snowlands this would be . . . but it sure does sound like it would violate the good neighbor rule about not building eyesores. At least in my sim and some of the surround sims, there are several of us who buy up land in scenic areas specifically to make sure it stays open for people to visit and that beauty in the area is preserved. Please don’t undo our efforts by building grassy summer scenes and such on the ground. It may not violate the TOS but it sounds like it just would not be nice. 😞
  8. I'm hoping to see a meaningful water connection to Sansara. As it is (or was the last time I checked) there was a connection to the southern tip of Sansara, but it wasn't very meaningful because it didn't connect to the other Sansara waterways. I'm dreaming of the day I can sail from the Marina de Lia in Sansara and down all the way to Jeogeot. 🙂
  9. True. But it runs into the same problems that exist with current policy, which says the following, with respect to warning time: You can use scripted objects to enhance your land ownership tools. Generally, such scripts should: Provide adequate warning to the undesired Resident. Full policy in the knowledge base here: And the problem we run into is: What is "adequate?" Some argue that zero warning is adequate, which essentially deletes the requirement to provide warning nonexistent. Are we talking about adequate to cross through the parcel? Or simply to turn around and get out? People don't understand different transportation methods very well. I know sailing and I know flying. I don't know the issues around driving that limit people being able to maneuver, by way of example. I do know that travel is more complex than simply pointing somewhere and going. For those reasons, I am more a fan of picking one amount of time. It trades the flexibility on time amounts for a policy that is easy to follow and easy to enforce. I'll save the discussion on how much time is appropriate for another forum and just use the 15 seconds from these new orbs as an example to illustrate the advantages: If all orbs are required to provide at least 15 seconds of warning, then no one has to debate what is "reasonable" and what is not. Everyone knows that if it is 15 seconds or more, they are safe from AR reports. Governance Lindens would find that rule easy to enforce. All they have to do is see that the orb provides 15 seconds or more of warning. Then they either ignore any reports about it or they return the orb to its owner and tell them to set that amount of time or more. Orb creators would know exactly the standards their orbs need to make and could script them accordingly to reject any amount less than 15 seconds. The drawbacks would be: 15 seconds would be too much time for a tiny parcel (like a 16 sqm parcel) and too little time for a large parcel (like a full sim, for example). 15 seconds would not be enough for some travel methods like, for example, sailboats, whose ability to travel is limited by the wind, so they can't just turn around and leave. The flat number seems a better way of giving people a rule to follow that they can understand well enough to actually follow it and making it easy for LL to enforce. The drawbacks are inherent in nearly any fixed number that might be chosen, but they seem less severe than the drawbacks inherent in just requiring "adequate" warning. That said, I'm basically a professional law & policy wonk in RL. I don't think 15 seconds would be appropriate for mainland. And I could quite happily go on and on and on about analyzing various amounts of time to determine what would be adequate. But I don't want to derail the whole thread, so I would suggest anyone who is interested in that talk about it with me outside this thread if you're interested. There are no perfect solutions. But I believe there are solutions for the rest of mainland just as there are for Bellesseria.
  10. The amount of time needed really depends on the method of travel and the size of the parcel. It gets more complicated on the mainland as a whole. In that setting, we'd have to either (1) have a sliding scale of some sort depending on probably parcel size or (2) come up with a one size fits all number recognizing that it might be too much/too little for some circumstances.
  11. (Remainder or posting not quoted due to length) Biiiiiiiiiiiiiig positive step forward and greatly appreciated. As with anything new, there may be a need to fine tune it. The time parameter and altitude parameter come to mind as things that may need tweaking. But that’s normal when trying anything new. In particular, the establishment of a minimum non-zero warning time and the elimination of teleport home seem like massive improvements. The ability to use any orb that conforms to those requirements seems like a nice bit of flexibility to what was originally announced. Now back to figuring out where to free up some tier for when the new house boat additions come out. Sigh.
  12. Most LL/mole created boat rez zones are inside of a square shaped parcel. They are not marked at all except for the parcel division. You can see this in the Blake Sea regions, Sea of Fables, Mare Secundus, etc. On the other hand, some resident created areas and events (Starboard's Yacht Club, Hotlaps, etc.) use a phantom sign to mark where the rez zone is. I'm sure someone has marked rez zones with buoys somewhere, but I can't think of a location off the top of my head and it definitely is not the usual. Still, I'm flexible. I don't need a marking at all. For those who are wondering about finding rez zones in the sea or on the island or elsewhere, the secret is to show parcel markings on the mini map. Rez zones are separate parcels. So having parcel markings enabled on the minimap basically gives you a map to help find them. In areas without a lot of parcel subdivisions, like most Linden parcels, a subdivided parcel is usually a rez zone. Or a race line. But the race line is long and thin, so it looks different. 🙂 Well, it is an airstrip and we can all fly in SL, so I guess the obvious suggestion would be that Belliserria's residents could make a short flight over there. Of more concern, imho, is the location in a sea lane. That seems like something that may need mitigation. Well, a helipad wouldn't serve fixed wing aircraft at all, whereas a runway is just fine for helicopters. We can do a vertical take off and landing off to one side of it. We can also actually fly approaches and take offs that use the runway as a horizontal surface that we fly over to achieve translation lift. See diagrams 2 and 3, the normal and running take offs, on this link to see what I mean. https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/23214/when-an-airport-has-helipads-why-would-a-helicopter-take-off-or-land-on-a-runwa Also, I certainly cannot speak for SL Coast Guard, but as an average helicopter flyer and sailor, I would have to say that helipads on top of lighthouses sound like they'd be downright bizarre looking and probably really ugly. Not really in keeping with all the effort that has been made to be normal, nice looking, and natural. I echo the pleasure at what keeps getting added! I also tried taking off from the landing strip and flying around the continent. Unfortunately, I had an in flight emergency. The controls became partially unresponsive following a sim crossing. I tried to turn around and fly across the island for an emergency landing on the new landing strip so I could try standing and reseating. But I was immediately teleported back home to Sansara by someone's 0 second warning security orb. Usually I go back, figure out who the person was, and AR them for zero second orbs. But with the new LL official orb coming so soon, I figured it wasn't worth the bother to LL or to myself. But I can't wait for that LL official orb to appear!
  13. . . . yet. 🙂 I have a feeling lots of things are coming. 🙂 Don't know what, but it doesn't seem like LL intends this to be a continent made of nothing but homes packed together and nothing else. They seem to want it to be a living, breathing community and a live part of the mainland. An airport would totally fit with some rumors I've heard.
  14. Abnor Mole is great and wise. It took me a long time to get around to putting land in group. But it's so worth it, not just for the 10% tier bonus, but for the flexibility it gives to do things like he described.
  15. I’m a snow leopard and I’d love to threaten to do snow leopard things to anyone who bothers me. But there has never been a single recorded snow leopard attack on a human being in all of recorded history. Even when defending a kill, snow leopards usually react to humans coming along by retreating. So if someone bothers me, I’ll do snow leopard things like . . . being cute. Keeping my distance. Hiding. Is everybody scared of me now? YES!!!! I didn’t quote your whole post because I didn’t want to spam everybody. But that was one of the most interesting forum posts I can remember and it just makes so much sense! Seems exactly like the one of thing LL is doing. I think you just totally explained what LL meant by the OP saying they want the new continent to be social. For myself, I’ve made quite a few friends by randomly bumping into people and by having good neighbors. I (and probably most people) go to clubs and such to spend a lot of time precisely because the density of people increases and therefore so does the chance of meeting new friends or running into old ones. Let me put it this way. A couple of days ago, a really nice, Blake region parcel with protected water access came up for sale at a pretty reasonable price. I have seen those parcels pop up before and seen them usually get purchased by a land baron, who multiplies the price heavily, and it just sits empty for ages. So I didn’t wait. I swooped (picture snow leopard swooping) and bought it. It used up my available tier I was saving for an LL home so I no longer have the tier available. I still want one of the new LL homes. I’m just wrestling with whether or not it’s worth it to abandon or sell any of my other land. And, if so, which parcel(s). I *really* hate abandoning land. If someone who has been waiting for months can go from “Wooooo! I got my Blake Land exactly where I wanted it!” to “I still want a LL home” in 48 hours, that’s gotta say something about how great the LL homes are. It’s also pretty iareasnteresting to me how few people teleported into my new parcel to check it out and maybe buy it. Usually, when I buy a parcel, I get a bunch of visitors at first because they see it marked for sale on the world map and it takes a while for the map to update. This time, I got exactly 1 visitor who tp’d in, apologized, and immediately tp’d out. For a Blake parcel with protected access to all the sailing/flying at a price under $5L/m, there was exactly one person who came in looking to buy. To me that is surprising and I cannot help wondering if Bellesaria has absorbed a lot of demand for such things. Someone in one of these threads said that the new homes were for people who wanted a Blake Sea lifestyle, but could not afford the buy in. And someone else pointed out that LL actually seems to be trying to do Blake one better. I cannot help thinking there is much truth in both those statements. And the fact that anyone who abandons their LL home has it taken by someone new within minutes, if not seconds, really says a lot about how well it’s working. LL should feel proud of themselves. While there are a few people who are too afraid of change to even give it a chance, and while there are going to be even fewer people who just won’t like it at all once they try it, I think it is working out as a huge win for the Lab so far and I think that will continue. Here is my prediction for how it will go: First of all, griefers are a lot less common and a lot less severe today than they were in the old days that many tell stories of as reasons why ban lines are very important. That won’t change. But there will be a short term rise in troublemakers testing the limits of what trouble they can make and how air tight the security arrangements can be. The level of troublemakers will fade within a month, but probably much less time. The new continent will become a haven for groups like GTFO, Drivers of SL, as well as the various sailing and aviation groups. It will host events, like the Drivers’ regular drives and it will serve as a long distance transit corridor. Travel related faciliti s built there, like GTFO hubs, for example, will compete with Blake región equivalents for popularity and might even top them. The density of people living in LL homes will stay high compared to the original LL homes, but it will never be a truly “dense” area. My crystal ball is nothing special, but we will see how well my predictions hold up. 🙂
  16. As long as it's off the travel paths, I cannot see why this would not work if LL wanted to do it. But I would suggest waiting. Fear is a normal part of change and whenever there is change, there are people proclaiming it will be a disaster. Usually there is no disaster. I don't imagine there will be here either. It will all calm down.
  17. Can we get the US military to adopt LL operation names? I mean . . . Operation Squishy Pickle sounds way more fun than Operation Desert Storm.
  18. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next round of Linden homes after Bellisseria comes in the form of an archipelago to maximize water front land. 🙂 Still, new product launches often have glitches and I have confidence in LL that I and the others who wan one are going to get our house boats.
  19. I notice something interesting about this discussion--and its many other iterations on these forums. The people who focus on open travel and oppose things like ban lines and zero or near-zero security orbs focus on overall improvement for everyone. We talk about industries and activities that affect lots of people beyond ourselves. That's why we talk about activities like GTFO and industries like boat/air/ground vehicle makers. The people who want their ban lines focus only on themselves. You hear statements about "my rights" and "I paid tier" and "I had this bad experience." But no consideration of the overall user base beyond speculation that the majority of users agree with them even though that seems fairly unclear. That is why I refer to people of this persuasion collectively as the "me me me" people. It's a short way of referring to the people whose focus is only on their individual wants. Allow me to address this to the few people who are objecting, including Madonna Milena, Blush Bravin, Gryphon Ronas, and Ethan Paslong: It is not about you. From the numbers I see when logging in, Second Life typically has between 40,000 and 50,000 users logged in at one time. An article I read not long ago stated that Second Life has 600,000 active accounts. Linden Labs is a fairly small company that has to manage the needs of all those people and the only way they can possibly have any success at that is to manage what is under their control, i.e., the mainland, to serve the needs of as many people as possible. They do this by trying to forge compromises. In this case, you don't get ban lines. But you do get an orb. If you want to address this in a way that is relevant to Linden Labs, then you need to start talking about what is best for big chunks of the user base and you need to do it with facts. Right now we see a bunch of happy people and a few unhappy ones, many of whom are making a patently false claims that LL is taking away their ability to manage privacy on their land. Why is that claim false? Because you still have a ban list. You still have power to eject. You still have a security orb. You still have the right to control access to your land. If you want to make a cogent argument for why that is not adequate for chunks of the user base, go ahead. That's how we can all make progress as a community and it is how we can harness controversy to the greater good of all. But I would suggest the following: Acknowledge reality. These posts that LL is taking away the ability to protect land privacy are false to the point of being silly. LL has specifically said you will have a ban list and a security orb. If there's some reason that's inadequate, come forward with it. But quit pretending those features don't (and won't) exist. Talk about the community, not just yourself. There are bad things that happen to individuals. That does not and cannot form the basis of continent-wide or grid-wide policy because a bad situation for one individual cannot interfere with the usage of 599,999 other people. Don't engage in victim hood. I'm a woman too (yes, in both SL and RL!) and I started my first account on July 25, 2006. I own multiple parcels, all with open rez, none with any security devices at all, and I have ended up with a grand total of . . . zero people banned. I'm not sure I've ever had to ban anyone in all my years. It's insulting to me as a woman to hear these accusations of this being able victim blaming and women being told that we asked for it. That is an issue about a different topic that has nothing to do with this issue. Same with posts about how your opinion isn't welcome in this thread. Keep your comparisons fair. The issue at hand is people passing by. Flyers. Boaters. Drivers. People like that who get interference from ban lines. Comparing traffic passing by to people coming into your house and demanding a meal or someone standing in your garden masturbating is not a remotely fair comparison. Consider the needs of the other side. Some of us who have talked to Linden Lab would really love to see all ban lines and orbs eliminated grid wide (I'd love that!). None of us in the group I'm part of have ever even suggested that to Linden Lab. Why? Because we understand that there are concerns and privacy issues affecting the other side. So we try to come up with compromises where people worried about privacy can have their privacy, without interfering with other users' use of the grid for other legitimate purposes. If you'd consider taking an approach like this, you'd probably find yourself listened to more and you'd be making a great contribution to the grid! But if all you have to say is that you just want something different because of your private personal preferences, then I suggest giving thanks for the fact that SL has places that cater to all budgets and tastes. Go to the place that caters to yours. I think you will find many private estates where your desire for isolation can readily be catered to. Going to the mainland, which is the most connected part of the entire grid, is probably not the place to be if you don't want people around you.
  20. It can take a loooooong time repeatedly refreshing though.
  21. It isn’t just vehicle users who are affected here. Off the top of my head, this affects vehicle users and: Vehicle creators (no point buying their product if using it is just an exercise in frustration) People walking/flying to explore or otherwise without a vehicle Anyone building something near the edge of their property Anyone with neighbors (see accounts from some of being boxed in) Fundamentally, this is an a decision that affects the entire continent positively. Why? Because the only thing that mainland areas, including LL home areas, have that a private estate does not have is a lot of space to move around in. This allows use of that space while still protecting privacy. Take away that space and private estates really are better for almost everyone. Fundamentally, the difference between the two sides of this issue seems to be caring about the good of the whole community versus a narrow focus on individual desires. There are not “pro” and “anti” privacy sides. Both sides recognize the importance of privacy. But one side seems focused on making sure everyone can coexist and compromise to protect privacy AND the common good of being able to use all that space to zoom by without affecting anyone. The other side, as far as I can tell, is focused on their individual preferences demanding not only that their privacy be protected, but that it be protected in exactly the way that they demand and without regard to how it affects anyone else. Mainland is a lot like a city. And like any city, it doesn’t work well when the dominant attitude is “my way and anybody else can take a hike.” It needs to strike the right balance. And I think this experiment, on one continent, is a great step in that direction. The overwhelmingly positive response seems to make pretty clear that it is addressing a problem that many people have Yes. People in these discussions often try to equate someone flying by overhead with someone coming into their house, sitting down, and demanding dinner. Some of the few complaints posted seem to make it sound like LL is demanding that everyone get access to everyone else’s house. That is false. It is so blatantly false that it is hard to see it as a misunderstanding. It’s just a misrepresentation. The reactions to this announcement makes me suspect that, if anything, the elimination of ban lines will *increase* the demand for one of these Linden homes, not decrease it. So I don’t imagine there will be many available. I value the ability to build stuff rather than having a prefab house. But these are very pretty. And the community feeling sounds great. And it’s an opportunity to live without the problem of ban lines and hopefully a chance to live without ridiculously aggressive security orbs. So now I wanna try out one of these Linden homes. Off to see if I can get lucky and swoop into a house boat. 🙂 If not, I’ll probably end up getting a regular house later on.
