  1. But you consider these posts spam too. Pile on is a matter of opinion. It's mine.
  2. Since those Mumbai threads were mentioned ill just ask out of curiosity. Do you all respond in those? Or do you just leave that person alone and move on since those probably don't deserve an answer. Why the pile on for some and not for others? Again just curious. I've never opened those Mumbai threads so I don't know if anyone responds or not.
  3. Yes I saw the threads. I see forums by their very nature as a place for questions so the threads didnt bother me.
  4. There are several books on how people feel about SL. My personal favorite is: Coming of Age in Second Life: an Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human by Tom Boellstorff. The author is a personal friend of mine, and he's still very active in SL, but with that aside, it's a really good book. Another favorite is: Second Life, the Official Guide by Michael Rymaszewski. Those are the top 2 on Amazon, but there's several others, including descriptives on sexuality, romance, friendship, etc in SL. People have been asking and answering this question of themselves and others since the inception of SL.
  5. On a personal level I totally agree with this. Even if you get a name, do your own verifying. Liability issues do abound and a SL resident May or may not be licensed in your RL STATE.
  6. I'm on vacation in RL so just now checking the forums and seeing this thread. Thanks Dillon. There are a lot of role playing people out there calling themselves just about everything in SL, 'because they can'. OP, i do understand your reasoning, there are a lot of people living way out that don't have access to services; talk to Gentle Heron of Virtual Ability. Just IM her, and tell her you got her name from me. She has people and services that are indeed RL verified. She also has the largest list of suicide help hotlines, worldwide, really, that I've ever seen, and she knows how to use it. She knows who's verified, in RL. In fact I think we have a list. Give her a shout out. Best of luck to you.
  7. First and foremost, IRB. What's your name, what's your University (you did put that down), who's your prof, and contact info for that prof for the survey subject to be able to verify. Without that, no go. I can only speak for me, but that's my criteria to be met before involving myself in a request for a student survey.
  8. Hello; Thanks for the shout out (think that was Dillon?) Anyway, while Virtual Ability does offer all kinds of peer support and resources for all kinds of disability related issues, as far as I know, we don't 'teach' people how to be DJ's, no matter their RL disability. We have lots of DJ's that are Virtual Ability group members. As far as I know, we have no D/deaf DJ's. We do have DJ's that specifically support our sim's activities (Cape Able, catering to D/deaf and others......) by posting the lyrics to the songs they're playing in local chat. I am the sim manager for that particular sim (Yes, I am deaf) and we have an art gallery that hosts art created by artists with disabilities in RL. I change that up pretty much quarterly. When those exhibits open, we do a grand opening celebration dance, and for that, I use the various DJ's from Virtual Ability. I pretty much am aware of most of the D/deaf groups around SL, and have ability (kindly granted by group owners) to post notices in most of them; There are a lot of D/deaf groups, but far as I know, Cape Able is still the only 'place' that is specific to people with hearing loss. If it were me, and I wanted to be a DJ I'd just learn how to do it and put my name out there. If you hear well enough to manage that, then you probably don't need special support of any kind, and as someone else said, SL doesn't owe anyone any type of support of that nature. You come to SL, you learn what you like to do and you do it. I think the wording of your thread here is off kilter a bit, and I'm not sure who you want to DJ for; whether you're talking about D/deaf events or others. Either way, the fact that you'll be a D/deaf DJ is kind of a non issue if you can handle the criteria to be a DJ period. I do things all day long without announcing that I'm deaf. Some know it, some don't, although I"m very open about it, in RL and SL. If your hearing loss isn't an issue for you, enough so that you can be a DJ, then, just do it. If you find it's too much for you to handle, then find something else to do that's more compatible with your personal issues...... Good luck to you, as you move forward, you're welcome to join Virtual Ability and attend our parties and events, and see how we roll, as people with RL disabilities functioning in SL. Edit to add: Oh, the other issue, there is software.....Dragon Speaking Naturally, JAWS, different things, that convert voice to text and text to voice and such, but I didn't really gather that was your issue, except if you'd be taking requests or something. You could always request text. DJ's at our events usually are mostly texting anyway, except for announcing songs and such, or thanking people for tips.
  9. Thank you, Czari. And that is the way, via 'Process Credit'?
  10. Hello; I've never cashed out Lindens so I cannot help the person asking me; on review of the website it appears that you can by visiting 'Process Credit'; my question is, can a basic account do this, or does one have to be Premium to cash out Lindens? Thanks.
  11. Hi Togran; As others have suggested, please do contact Virtual Ability. Speak with Gentle Heron, tell her I sent you over from the forums, she'll be able to guide you. Hope to see you around the grid.
  12. Why thank you sir, for the referral. :matte-motes-smile: To the OP, please do start there. Speak with Gentle Heron, or with any mentor you may find there, they will help you get started and find groups specific to your needs. Take care.
  13. Required Tax Documentation by Linden Lab on ‎11-19-2013 10:16 AM The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires Linden Lab to collect and retain Form W-9 (for U.S. residents) and Form W-8BEN (for non-U.S. residents) at certain transaction volumes. If you reach the transaction threshold and we do not have your completed and signed W-9 or W-8BEN on file, we are required to withhold funds from your account (at the current rate of 28% of your gross amounts received). Additionally, for U.S. residents with 200 or more transactions with a total amount in excess of $20,000 in a calendar year, we are required to file a Form 1099-K with the IRS reporting those transactions for that year. If you are required to submit a W-9 or W-8BEN form to us, we will email you before the end of the year with instructions on how to do so. Please follow the instructions to complete and submit the required Form W-9 or W-8BEN within thirty (30) days of receipt. You will only need to complete this paperwork once unless your information changes from year-to-year. If you do not receive an email from Linden Lab, we do not need you to complete these forms.
  14. Possibly you haven't completed/returned their IRS form document/requirement? Just speculating, that seems to be an issue/reason for people being unable to cash out, there's a few threads/complaints about it.
  15. A long, long time ago, (at least 6 years!) I read an almost identical plea, in another SL forum, far, far away (Resident Answers). I owned a mainland parcel (I still own it today) with ban lines, or a security orb, I forget which, and also a couple of estate parcels, with orbs.. The person who made this plea on the forum, was very eloquent. It was easy for me to understand, to get it. At the time, I actually cared about people coming on my land uninvited, using my stuffz, ,etc. (I no longer do) It made perfect sense to me. I removed my security orbs and ban lines, to allow people to fly or drive by unimpeded. It just felt like the right thing to do. I've never had any bad results from it. Maybe some will read your post and react as I did. I've never had that stuff up since. All you can do is try, best wishes and happy travels!
  16. Inworldz forums have that feature. LOL Hey, IJS! When you are done typing your killer post and hit SEND, a message will pop up saying 'new posts have been received while you were typing this, you might want to first review them before you SEND'. Then the new post will show, and you can then decide whether you still want to send or not. It's pretty nice feature. :smileyhappy:
  17. Thanks Dora, I thought of that; it just seemed like a lot of stuff to go through, just to say 'I'm busy, go away', lol. But sure you could be right.
  18. If I am inworld, I greet anyone who arrives on my sim; it's specific to disabilities and disability related info, people with hearing loss, and has a lot of other resources that people come to find, because they heard it was there. It was just a greeting, and offer of help if one wants. If they're just browsing or came to see the galleries or something, I leave them alone after that greeting. That's what led me to IM them. Otherwise, I'm kind of a loner and rarely IM someone out of the blue like that.
  19. I wasn't actually 'concerned' as I wasn't about to supply any kind of a password. I just stopped talking to it. And yes, it looked like a normal IM reply, as far as how it was set up.
  20. Hello Savvy Forum-ites; I'm stumped. If you IM'd someone that you'd never before spoken to; and you received a message back that asked you to supply a password and some specific language, in order for your message to 'get through', what would you conclude? Is it some sort of RLV thing? Some type of constraint where someone isn't allowed to chat? Do you think the restrained avatar (if that's what it is) knows it's there? Any insights would help especially if you've seen this before. Thanks! Oh, and I am pretty positive this wasn't a bot. Very extensive profile and long term resident.
  21. Alright then; I apologize for insulting you; it wasn't my intention, it was a very casual comment, but only you can say or know if you felt insulted by it. and for that, I apologize. Anyone that knows me, even a little bit, knows I am not the person you described here 'one of those Fox news people'. Oh but wait, you *DON'T* know me. Even a little bit. You and I, do not have even a nodding forum acquaintance. Perhaps it is your marketing experience, that you mentioned, that caused you to judge me that way based on the comment about racism I made. If you don't know anything about someone, then you're entitled to make stuff up. That's the way of the internet. For me, it doesn't mean anything, as you and I have absolutely no interaction, at all, simply crossed here, momentarily, and you're entitled to your opinion. You're right, it's 'very unacceptable to me' but you're still entitled to it. Anyone who knows me, knows it isn't true. But you're still entitled to it. I did dash that comment off, and I'll try to clarify a little better. I never had a white avatar; it never occurred to me to go there; even as a noob with NO skin at all, just the slider settings on the avatar itself, I colored my skin dark, because, that's who I am. So I don't really have an experience of going around SL with a white skin. I imagine that would be an illuminating experience, but one I'm not interested in trying. I have no doubt at all that what you're saying is true, about some sims in SL (IWz too? I don't know, not there enough) I wasn't meaning to imply that it wasnt true, just that why would I go looking for it? I know that a search for 'Interracial' might bring you anywhere, but it's not a search that I'd be doing; setting myself up to get my feelings hurt, for what purpose? In SL, as in RL, sometimes you can happen upon things you weren't expecting; (In RL, in a major US city, there was a KKK rally yesterday. Those people are still around, in droves, with their hoods and signs and their right to free speech; people out and about, just living their daily lives, happened upon it) It's so much easier in SL and these virtual worlds, to leave. I don't go looking for it, and if it finds me by happenstance, I leave. Unlike RL, being here is a choice. I don't agree that POC don't find a welcoming space, (is that ok, that I disagree?) although I must agree that you don't, since it's your statement. I always remove myself from blanket statements like that. If I found myself feeling unwelcome, I'd be gone in a heartbeat. I've been here awhile, so, I guess I've found something welcoming, that doesn't cause me discomfort. I don't expect LL, or IWz admin, or anyone else, to meet any needs of mine. If I choose to avail myself of a venue, then it's really up to me whether it meets my needs or doesn't. I would be very surprised to learn that either corporation had any POC on their boards, or even their creative content people, to concern themselves about meeting my needs as a RL black female. If there were no black skins, in SL, I'd still be using the sliders, or I'd be gone. Like you, I also grew up in a city that was mostly non-white. It was quite an eye opener to adjust to being around so many whites, for me that was in college and beyond. I just learned to do me, and allow others to do themselves. I remember when I married, I had a double wedding, (my husband's sister). She wanted to dress in African garb and jump the broom; her brother (my husband) did not. So we compromised, we did both, and other than being kind of a long wedding, that worked, because she was herself, and so was I. At any rate, I reach out to you peacefully and with no rancor, and again, am sorry for insulting you.
  22. Really pussycat? As a RL black person I've never had a problem maintaining that dynamic in SL or IWz. I wear same skin from same creator both worlds. One can find racism under every rock if one lifts enough rocks.
