It doesn't matter HOW it was said, because just the idea confused and/or bothered the new users enough to make them leave and not come back. I got that too. New users got confused when told what to download and where to get it, and decided on their own accord to leave, and suddenly a feature is no good. Isn't giving more than once choice the whole point to the existance of TPVs? It just reeks of "We will only do so much with our viewer to improve it, so we are trying everything else to fix these other Open Development issues."

  3. As said before try cranking up RenderVolumeLOD (I think thats the title) in debug settings. I have it set to 4.0. Most people will recommend that for proper viewing of sculpts as well.

Cutting off casual creators. I don't see it that way. If the new capabilites were simply additional features for building objects, e.g. in the Edit box, then I would agree with you. But, as far as I can tell, they are completely different, and could be used buy idiot kiddies to mess other people about. If that's the case, LL has three choices - (1) make it so that everyone can use them, (2) don't let anyone use them, and (3) be nice and let users use them but control who, so that idiots can't use them against other people. I prefer the third of those. For instance, if we didn't have flexiprims, and a new capability was flexiprims, then I would agree. It's just a building feature that everyone should be able to make use of, and I would be against it being restricted to some people but not others. But the new stuff was described as "powerful", which I take to mean something quite different to a mere building feature like flexiprims. Tools in the edit box have been used by idiot kiddies to mess with others for years. Restricting access to tools is NOT the answer.
  9. Thanks Keli for giving us a space to comment. Shame on Rod for not doing so, but that LL's way of doing things. A few things stood out to me: I kind of like the "game within SL" approach. You can do everything else in SL, why not be able to play immersive games? Besides, SL is a platform, not a game itself. If this helps make people understand that, that'd be awesome to me. Thats about the only good thing, though. The creators program - yet another way LL is stroking the egos of certain users who call themselves "advanced" or "power" users, while leaving new users without the tools that put them on a level playing field. What a joke. The 16 (yes, SIXTEEN) percent adoption rate of Mesh - Rod BRAGGED about this number. Seriously. I couldn't make this up. Read it again. About the bug fixes, Rod says, and I quote: "this makes for a poor headline". No Rod, it does not. The bug fixes that are not out yet, or that didn't work, do however. "For landowners, existing land tier pricing will not go up in 2012" - A nice way of telling us a price decrease is nowhere in sight. Thanks for nothing. Less really is more. Slash the prices and you'll figure that out. Pathfinding: might be cool, but then so were the sim tours and hot air balloon rides ive been on for years.
  10. dont scratch your head. really. my standards are pretty clean and simple. if the software works without any lag in version 1.23.5, and then 2.4 is loaded and lag is, and, no joke, 3-5 second response to movement events, and then you go back immediately to 1.23.5 and the lag is gone..then yes, its not ready for primetime. i assume there's some video card compatibility issues at play, but i'll wait around for a few more iterations of the software. Like Darien pointed out, this is likely to happen when switching viewers. New cache, and it possibly took you back to some default preferences as well, if you use custom ones in 1.23. Is the lag any worse after spending some time on it, logging out and starting multiple sessions? Or did you not bother to try that? Deleting your cache, uninstalling 1.23.5, and reinstalling 1.23.5 and launching it would likely give you similar results. Biggest reason you get no lag on 1.23.5 is because it has stuff stored in memory. A beta won't have that the first time you run it.
