An advertiser chooses to pay for click-throughs or for sales/sign-ups, but usually not both. eBay (uk) once emailed me to offer £5 (~$8) for every sign-up they got via one of my sites. I put their ad on and got very little from it. An insurance broker paid me £4 per click-though from one my sites, and I got plenty from that ad. Mostly, it's cents rather than dollars though. I don't see the ads on this site but LL could be getting a lot more for click-throughs than just a few cents. I wonder what happens when I click but don't buy right away. I save the item in my favs or search for it using google and buy it at a later date... do they still get anything off that?
  2. Phil Deakins wrote: It depends how much each advertiser is paying for the clicks. It could well be that sometimes LL gets more from your clicks than they would have got from their 10% share of something you would have bought in the marketplace on that visit. ...and if they get a % of the sale from these ads.... no wonder they use them.

There are a ton of diiferent ones that show up..everything from "dating" services to telephone and cable providers to other RP games (which always made me wonder). Anyway...my guess is that they get a fixed fee from the advertisers and then maybe get a little bonus when someone clicks on the ad. Even if you use an adblocker program and don't see them, LL is still making money from the ads. The comparison would be if you have a billboard on a highway, even if no one sees it, the company who owns the billboard is making money off the ad.. I'm not aware of any advertising system where LL would get a fixed fee for displaying the ads, except when they sell on-screen real estate, and they are not using that type of system. I'm convinced that LL only gets money either on click-throughs or on sales, but not on impressions. That's the standard sort of advertising system, and the ads here look like a standard advertising system. Someone once told me that google gives a penny a click, I don't know if that is true though. It's not true. The amount varies a lot, from a few cents per click up to well over US$10 per click, and is set by the advertiser. Gambling sites tend to pay the most - or they used to. If you were told about Google's AdSense system, publishers (website owners) get a lot more that a penny per click. The advertiser pays Google for each click (an amount set by the advertiser) and Google passes a large share of it onto the publisher. Google don't say what percentage is passed on but ii's thought to be about 70%. So it sounds like I am making Linden Lab more money by clicking on these ads then by anything I might buy at the marketplace.

  5. Tex Monday wrote: (snip) You, my dear, may be a special case. People will spend money off the ads but probably not to the extent that you are. In answer to your second question, no. I am not spending any additional money off the ads that show up on the forum. Then again, I'm not spending a lot of money (or lindens) in SL at all. Since I don't really have a source of income inworld, i'm reluctant to spend any money knowing it will take me a while to get it back. If it's not free or under $10L, I usually don't buy it. I find it shocking that people don't shop in SL ..... (sighs) Men!

  8. speciali wrote: i only see non-flash ads (firestorm + click to play activated) cause they are annoying, taking away system recourses and sometimes even crash a site, i accept any website putting ads on them, but i won't accept flash ads, especially video ads, i gone away from TV to NOT see video ads anymore, ever, if you try to force them on me i will use all technical force to block them, just a warning It would be nice to have more choices for what type of ads we get, but it seems everyone is moving to the flash based ads, which btw don't work on the iPhone at all.

And I don't know about anybody else but when I did see the ads, it moved my screen every time the came up, very unpleasant viewing the MP like that. But its all better now. :matte-motes-bashful-cute-2: Maybe I should have done that I would have more money now that is for sure. But I blocked the one I didn't like and kept the ones I did like.... and look what happens!!! I am taking away from the Marketplace, sometimes hours at a time.

Interesting proposition you raise though I suspect that most people ignore the ads or have a blocker thereby rendering an extremely small revenue stream to LL. LL would have to hope that any expenditure on items bought through the ads would be additional spend on top of a person's SL budget. Luxury or impulse buys might impact on inworld sales, but I suspect that most items bought through ads would be items that we already do spend money on regularly and wouldn't impact on inworld sales such as: insurance, utilities and Viagra. :smileywink: I was going to correct you on RL specifics but then I remember that we are in SL, who am I to take away your dreams?

  12. Syo Emerald wrote: At least you get actual usefull products. Its just so random and wrong what they advertise. Blocking them with ghostery was worth it. But I did not block them, I used them the way "they" hope everyone does.... and look what happens. Instead of buying SL products I am being lead away to buy stuff somewhere else? Did they think this whole thing through? People either block them and don't use them, or use them and spend money else where!
  13. I don't think I really need anything in RL but when I see these sale ads!!! I love a good sale! I just wonder about the wisdom of RL ads in a virtual world. If they were not in my face I would be thinking about SL and not the latest sale at Macy's.
  14. When the ads first started showing up on the SL pages I was a little annoyed but I quickly learned that by clicking on the ones you like and X-ing out the ones you don't like you start getting ads that you enjoy. (Here is a sample of some of the ads I am getting) The only problem with getting ads I like is I started shopping in Real Life and not in Second Life. Before the ads started showing up I was thinking about getting more land but now that I am spending so much money on things I see in the ads that does not seem like a good idea at this time. I am even buying fewer $Lindens each month to make sure that I keep to my budget. So here is my point: I am spending less money on SL, a lot less money. Is SL making enough money off these ads that they are able to make up for the money I am not spending on SL now? What about you are you spending money on stuff you see in the ads?

Is it like Windows - Mac OS is more stable but Windows became the standard first? Is it like Betamax vs. VHS? I thought it was the oil companies, don't they try to control everything?
  17. You make some good points I was just shocked that I only had to change 8 things.... I thought it would be a lot more. The good news is if it is just a matter of breasts you can get mesh breasts and use lolas like with this outfit: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/ArisAris-Chloe-Lolas-Tango-Version-Mesh-Outfit/4486295
  18. One of the great things about Second Life is the endless ways we are able to customize our avatars but some fear Mesh Standard Sizing might take some of that away. I had this fear myself until I looked into just what Standard Sizing does. Standard Sizing mainly effects the areas of the body that store fat. Standard Sizes come in 5 sizes XXS, XS, S, M, and L. If you use mesh breasts only thing they change is your body fat and the size of your rear. If you don't use mesh breasts you will end up with average sized breasts. As you can see I still look like me in the above pictures the only thing that is different is how many cupcakes it looks like I ate. Rigged Mesh Clothing really only looks at 8 settings. Body Fat, Torso Muscle, Breast Size, Love Handles, Belly Size, Leg Muscle, Butt Size, and Saddle Bags. (men have a few more options but same idea) If you change these 8 settings to fit one of the Standard Mesh Sizes it does not matter what your shape is rigged mesh will fit. Your shoulders can be as wide as you like but if you set the “body fat” settings to medium that is what you will be. Both the top and the bottom of the bikini are mediums. Let me say this again rigged mesh does not care what your shape is as long as you follow the settings in Body Fat, Torso Muscle, Breast Size, Love Handles, Belly Size, Leg Muscle, Butt Size, and Saddle Bags. So if you want to eat this whole strawberry cake there are setting to make it look like you did without changing the “you” people know. With Standard Sizes you can be as short or as tall as you like and the only thing that matter is the settings I have mentioned. If you pick XS fat settings you can be 6'5” and the rigging will still fit the XS mesh to your shape. If you want to know more about Standard Sizes you can get a free kit here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Standard-Sizing-Package-Updated-Male-Female/2894727 Here is a sample of the settings: Female Medium Body Fat: 11 Torso Muscle: 38 Breast Size: 58 Love Handles: 31 Belly Size: 6 Leg Muscle: 56 Butt Size: 44 Saddle Bags: 36 Male Medium Body Fat: 5 Belly Size: 3 Torso Muscle: 51 Love Handles: 28 Leg Muscle: 61 Butt Size: 55 Saddle Bags: 31 Knee Angle: 50 Package: 31 Pectorals: 27
  19. You can get the Mesh Standard Sizing Shapes for FREE off the marketplace. If you use them as a template and you are sure to have mesh fit you. The size you most likely want is XS https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Standard-Sizing-Package-Updated-Male-Female/2894727
