I wanna make a wish too.

I wish they would ruin the land price jeopardy that's going on in Horizons&Co., with making mainland double prim for PP users x3

Also I bet this would make Premium plus sell like hot cake :D...oh now I want I cake...

That’s an interesting idea - Regions have been set anywhere from 1000 to 35000 and they are able to be up and downgraded as private regions so i don’t doubt there’s a way to do it for mainland regions too.
Also, now I want cake too! 🍰🍰🍰

  2. I put in for lifetime Premium Plus ss soon as they announced them and wasn’t quick enough to grab a spot, oh well! Not going to go back down to Premium on my main though because I like the way my new little farm is shaping up in the Ranch area and I know I’ll want to hop into whatever the next PP+ home theme is because I really like exploring the new changes in themes, lol. Undecided whether to try and bump an alt up to Premium permanently though. Maybe.

Trying out a skin only to find out it has extremely badly done shine/gloss that completely ruins it. Whyyyy do creators do this?

I’m afraid it might get worse under PBR lighting so I’m going to wait a bit to shop for any new skins.

unreasonable peeve: I want First Life summer to be over but I also want the next Linden Homes that were teased as ‘Thousand Island’ to be a tropical paradise AND released before the US winter holidays! 😎

When I read something that hinted he had written FOR LL at one point, my thought was, "they PAID for this?".

Hinted? He was a contractor writing for the Lab for 2-3 years. Hamlet Linden.

I’ll read it before I have anything to say about it. I have been warm/cold with his writing. Sometimes I read and enjoy it, other times it doesn’t suit me.

  5. The main reason I like a separate L and R mesh eye is so that if they are mod or you get a fullperm set, the texture of each can be made slightly different and you can use a separate eye shine layer if desired. System eyes both use the exact same texture and while to some it’s a quibble, it has always seemed a bit off and ‘rubber stamped’ to me. Since they are usually smaller textures, making different ones doesn’t add hugely to an a avatar’s texture load and I think it’s a nice look.

That would go also for those who buy their way into Second Life by using outside financing rather than working their way up into having a virtual life on SL.

But at ~ L$250/USD$1, a monthly premium membership with a Linden home and some weekly inworld spending money (should they choose to spend it) is still basically in reach for many who have met the first 2 levels of needs on the pyramid, (a bottle of soda here is about $2.50) so that bar is still pretty low to hop over for many users. I don’t think new resident retention/satisfaction rates are going to be significantly improved by promoting hours spent hunting crystals or similar low-payout games. I’m not sure about other inworld jobs but I’m assuming most outside of the adult realm pay less than minimum wage? Not completely sure though.

Why shouldn't a resident to resident discussion be relevant here?

I don’t think it’s irrelevant (obviously I as tried to refocus my contribution to the thread and continue discussing) but since the initial ask regarding the adult community sub-topic here was ‘for LL to do something’, a forum thread is probably not the most productive way to try to make that happen, IMO.

Regarding advertising and promotion, it’s there but it’s subtle. Something I notice in the Destination Guide (and I’m not signed in for that tab so this is what any non-member can also see) is that the Adults Only section at the bottom contains 6 subcategories and it seems to be an additional feature, not a ‘walled garden’ or containment category because if you click most any of the other sections and filter for adult rated Regions, there are many listed in other sections like Art, Fashion & Style, etc. There are also 8 featured in Recently Added, and of course the 4 each that are in SLB and Shop & Hop additionally. In suggesting Regions to the Destination Guide, Adults Only is an optional category you may choose but listings for adult rated Regions do not seem to be restricted to that category (and therefore the bottom section) at all.  https://secondlife.com/my/forms/destinations.php?

edit: I’ll leave this sub-topic alone now. Sorry.

I am told they will be.

Huzzah, that’s great news, thank you.

I’m really glad people are already feeling the stirrings of creativity to make and mod with these when they come out.

Philips response boils down to 'without the bottom two needs, people are naturally altruistic and nice"

In the end, and looking back over the thread - to start with, I didn’t interpret this as his response. What  I heard was  ‘When we are freed from those needs in SL, we seek connection.’ And while people are free to disagree with that or my interpretation of what he said entirely too, I think that observation has value - the stakeholders and advisors have a vested interest in the leveraging the narrative of what they have learned over 20 years as they launch the mobile apps in what I hope is going to be quite a favorable time for them to be debuting.

I should have addressed that directly as I feel like the ‘SL is a 3D Porn World’ and ‘everyone is here for sex’ are actually a separate topic that might have been better addressed or discussed in another thread, but also might have gotten many of the same responses given the tone - which to me grew hostile and dismissive of others’ opinions very quickly and people responded in kind. For me that’s where the original topic derailed. The opinion that LL should specifically acknowledge the adult community more or even advertise adult rated content more is probably something that could be more productively addressed with someone in marketing at the Lab instead of a discussion resident-to-resident here. There are probably several ways to better highlight more of the active adult community & content (and downplay the empty clubs full of bots), in the already available avenues - for instance in the destination guide adult category entries, via radio PSA’s on the various adult inworld radio stations and via event partnerships with other adult-themed enterprises in-world, working with the events and shops that serve their community.

    Still talking about sex.

Some people are completely absorbed with their single focus and aren’t willing to let anyone else’s opinion be valid in tandem. Even in shared space. Really doesn’t leave room for discussion, negotiation or exploration though. Forgive me for pointing out the obvious but don’t certain communities really depend on a certain degree of mastery of those skills though? Ah well…

I tried hard. I mean, really, really, really hard.

I "got it" a few times and made long posts.

But the logic kept escaping me.

The real point is more supposedly something like, "Second Life does a 'disservice' by making it too easy to fulfill those lowest-tier needs (like getting a house), since people don't know what to do next and really are just wanting to find Sex, so Linden Lab should stop being ashamed of why everyone is really here, for sex. Second Life will go out of business if they don't start advertising openly about Adult activities. And other games have better graphics and animations and sexual content.  Haven't you played any other games? But Second Life is the only Social Sandbox game that survived with any adult content."

    See? It's hard to articulate.

And if you put a bunch of Post-It's on a wall, you can connect them with string and thumbtacks.

    Fixed…

Had a Barbie.  Didn't really play with her much.  I do recall cutting off all.her hair and using a magic marker to color it black.  Black Barbie didn't come out until.I was well past playing with dolls. Early 80s IIRC.  😕

Christie came out in 1968 but point taken, she was one of the friends. I said ‘Barbies’ generically but my own favorite main gal was always PJ, also a friend.

I certainly don’t think all of SL should be trivialized as ‘playing Barbies’ but for me there’s definitely some aspects that evoke similar (and good) feelings. I wear a pretty formulaic fashion in First Life and don’t cosplay much so exploring all sorts of fantasy and historical costumes and wearing fantastical avatars in SL is really enjoyable. Similarly, my home decor follows 2 main styles so to stray far from them in SL as well as copycat them sometimes and push chairs around is fun and interesting. Only 1 of my SL houses has ever been similar and ironically, it was a Linden home.

Well this topic advanced so much further than when I last commented.  I'm so glad I was wrong about it.

Since the basis of the post was for OP to put forth their own opinion of how  Philip Linden ‘got it wrong’ answering the posed question  instead of answering the original question themselves as it was asked - I don’t think the thread ever really developed viability in the first place but it quickly lost ground from even that point. Flawed logic, overgeneralization and then inability (or unwillingness) to entertain varying opinions despite quite a few genuinely well written replies kept the thread from becoming a more productive  discussion, IMO.

  14. Oh come on…Y’all can’t tell me that at least some of you didn’t look at that Reign Chanel’s closet (and other room-sized closets) without at least entertaining the Barbie Dream House thought? I might or might not still have it rezzed from the day I got it - and that was well over 6 years ago…

I ordered Barbies last week, though not the ones from the movie. Vera Wang and Ida B Wells from the sale! For me, some of the good parts of Barbie have been aspirational, I had hours of fun playing with friends in our own little world of imaginative play. The dolls are enjoyable to me still as an adult collector, and similarly some of the hours of shopping & avatar styling have been times of carefree enjoyment of inworld fashion with SL friends.

  15. Again from another thread

Zindra, the last "mainland" to hold any value is heading towards M and G price per sqm (which unless it's special in some way, is now basically free). I know a few individual creators, sales are down hard (like 30% of last years take home after taxes and fees). People who have done ok here for years are looking at other outlets, or _real jobs_, but mainly food stamps.

    {snip}

This place dies by degrees and a lot of people have been holding on for dear life for a while already.

And so this doesn’t translate to you as a declining niche? Because that’s how it reads to me. Because if the /people/ of a community aren’t thriving, is the community thriving? Or are the inflated traffic and search numbers telling another (and inaccurate)story?

On the one hand, you claim the largest demographic and then in the next breath in another thread, no - it’s shrinking and dying, many hanging on by a thread and not doing well.

    Which?

In one thread ‘look, adult community is thriving, adult regions have ALL THE TRAFFIC’ - in another thread ‘traffic is gamed and absolute s**t’

    Which?
