Suppose he wrote "refusing service to jurors and all Irish people"? Do you think his business would survive the fallout? That's just it! If the business doesn't survive due to discriminatory practices, than so be it. But, the right to chose who one sells to, regardless of reason, is a basic right. Just as the right to chose where you spend your money! If you can't be forced to buy from me, why should I be forced to sell to you? Here you go, in case you didn't read the link before: http://mises.org/daily/6690/If-I-Must-Sell-You-Must-Buy I read the link. "Libertarian" is a political affiliation not a religious sect. I don't live and breathe and hang on every single word that is published by the Cato Institute. I don't kneel and pray to the Libertarian logo every evening. Like I wrote above, refuse to accept me at a place of business for no reason other than you not liking my skin color or the company I'm with will have negative ramifications for that business. Yes, in the name of individual liberty, free markets, and peace.

An example off the top of my head: In the summer of 2011 there was a very high profile trial that gained national/international attention. As a compromise to the motion from the defense to have the trial moved out of the county of the defendant (and where the events took place), the judge instead brought in a jury from another county approximately two hours away. The jury was sequestered for the long trial. The jury returned a verdict that stunned most people who had closely followed the events precipitating the trial and/or the trial itself. For the jury's protection the judge sealed their names, not to be released for 3 or 6 months (now I don't recall exactly but one of those two). What does this have to do with the discussion of refusing service to potential customers? The owner of a restaurant chain in the county where the jurors lived posted a sign refusing service to the jurors. The restaurant owner said that he basically just wanted to state his personal objection to the verdict, admitting he wouldn't be able to identify any of the jurors if they did enter his restaurant; even though the entire trial was televised, none of the jurors were ever shown on camera. I recall the news attention over this when it happened. Just an interesting anecdote where one business owner had an unusual reason to state he would decline service. But he (the business owner) had a sign posted, and that counts for everything as he clearly stated his intention to not serve a select group. Suppose he wrote "refusing service to jurors and all Irish people"? Do you think his business would survive the fallout?

Altho how anyone is supposed to know the race or religion of the typist behind the avatar is a mystery to me. You should write the above in your business description, or "We reserve the right to refuse anyone we don't like" Perhaps even get a UCCSL Union sticker. Funny how many women attempted to create a nightmare for Augusta National because they refused to allow women at the club (and it is a private club.) They attempted to bring ruin on the Masters by going after their sponsors -- the money. Funny how that works. There are hundreds of more stories about the same.

Sue on, and see where it gets you. In the US, if service is refused for reasons prohibited by law (such as for racial or religious reasons) the person refused has recourse to various levels of the justice system. If such reason is not present or cannot be proved, the person refused has recourse only to the kind of frivolous lawsuit Storm suggests. Hi Dillon You know, it's easy these days with the Internet understanding when a service business (hotel, restaurant, chain store, or just about any other business) is practicing discrimination. You won't keep it from the public long. Sure, if I'm the only one then I guess it is me being the jerk, but if a history of discrimination is established (and one will be) then my lawsuit is not so frivolous, is it? How many women sue for sexual discrimination in job advancement? Are they frivolous? I'd also like to clarify that I would not seek monetary compensation with a lawsuit .... Frivolous? PS I didn't suggest a lawsuit, I threatened a lawsuit. You seem to have misread my post, Storm. How odd. I said quite clearly that a person refused service for reasons prohibited by law would have recourse to the justice system. Discrimination, in the sense that it is commonly understood, means discrimination against a class of people based on their race, ethnic background, religion, sexual orientation, gender and other characterisitics. That would be prohibited by law. Also, I said nothing whatever about job advancement. I was responding directly to your comment regarding 'walking into' an establishment means you'd 'better be served'. Bringing up the sexual discrimination context is totally off topic and has nothing to do with anything. Again, how odd. As for your quibble regarding my choice of words, I've edited the post for clarity. Edited this post for punctuation Unless I was being a jerk or not properly attired according to the rules of the house then why else would I not be served if not for a discriminatory practice? So we have both said the same thing, Dillon. It is you that is quibbling over my words.

Anyone who spends their own time, money and effort to create something is not obligated to sell to you. Or, to anyone else. In life we have the right of "free association". This means that I can choose who to assoicate with, or not, as I see fit. Everyone has that right. This extends to all areas of life. Being a creator or seller does not negate that right. I wrote about and was speaking to retail and service businesses. If I walk into your establishment (in proper attire ,etc.) I better be served. If not, I will sue and embarrass your establishment. Why? Because I, too, am a libertarian -- and vote accordingly.

You're right, in the Court of Public Opinion it can be a real mess for a business. But as far as a Court of Law is concerned, a person would be very wise to have a clearly articulable reason before denying service to anyone that is not based on race, creed, etc. But they don't last long. You get to fool the public once or twice then the proprietor is smeared (and justifiably so) on facebook, yelp, or any other social media site that these same businesses need to survive in today's market. It gets as messy as it should.

No such obligation exists in RL transactions. Not only are you wrong you are categorically wrong. The retail environment (in the U.S.fo A.) has many, many laws that do not allow discrimination of any sort. What you sell to me you must sell to the next person regardless of race, creed, or color. Like I wrote above, SL is not Arizona attempting to pass legislation that would refuse service to gay individuals because of a proprietors religious beliefs. Backward religious hillbilly's, imo. This is 2014 and African Americans do not have to sit in the rear of the bus or have separate toilets. PS You surprised me,Sassy, as I thought you knew better.

I haven't done so or even tried yet, but you'd think they wouldn't mind if you only do a little bit because it still drives traffic to here and to the game. To me Bitcoins doesn't match the true definition of "money laundering", it's a real currency just the same as lindens is a real currency, and both are earned... Go to your nearest Community College and take a few courses in economics. Start with eco101, you need it. Absolutely clueless!

  12. Go to marketplace and read some of the reviews
  13. Felicia Silversmith wrote: Storm, there are mechanisms to unlist bad products. But merchants dont have any protections from incorrect reviews. Thats is what topic about,, People spending a lot of time to create product and then some person writing defaming review wich really fake. And all merchants can do in this case is to write tickets to Linden Labs. But it will not stop this person from writing more fake reviews like that. Marketplace is chockful of *bad* product. If there is a mechanism for unlisting [sic] then it hasn't worked. Or maybe it has worked and then someone figured out that if we keep whacking/delisting we won't have any more product to sell on Marketplace. Merchants have plenty of tools at their disposal to reconcile poor reviews. Use them.
  14. I suggest the creation of a merchant banlist. Especially merchants with a *union* label. Do you see some of the garbage some merchants sell on marketplace?
