  1. Make sure it is an actual SSD, and not just a flash drive. They have quite a big difference in speed. Also don't pay attention to people above saying you can't do this; I am using a USB-connected SATA SSD and running SL on Linux as we speak, and it certainly performs faster than a hard disk.
  2. One thing most people don't realize is that such models are extremely expensive to create and host, due to all the computation required. I doubt LL will be making their own model; they already have enough expenses to worry about.
  3. There is nothing wrong with preparing (mentally or otherwise) for future problems, even if they may not happen. Because by the time something does happen, it is usually too late to do anything about it. Better safe than sorry.
  4. Probably that too, but there is one other thing. All the user-generated content in SL has the potential to be training data for generative AI, specifically neural networks trained to generate 3D models. It wouldn't surprise me if someone out there wants this data, and that LL would be willing to sell it.
  5. I don't know what is happening, but I have a bad feeling about this. I already sold most of my L$, but if I hadn't sold it by now this would have been enough of a reason for me to do so.
  6. It is easily dealt with. If somebody consistently does nothing but make catty remarks, I just block them. There is no point in wasting your energy over people like that.
  7. Without the background processes of Windows consuming all your disk bandwidth, you may even get by with the entire system installed on a USB SSD.
  8. Indeed it does. If you try Linux, you will get at least 2-3x the FPS in SL
  9. I believe many do this because they have hidden product testing or otherwise private areas on the same region as the store (often at a different elevation) that they don't want people on the sim being able to teleport to. Of course this is a stupid reason to ruin the experience for everybody (as there are much better security options,) but remember that we are talking about creators who often do other stupid things like make their stuff no-mod.
  10. Yeah, they only work in SL. For other games, you are going to want the Bully Hunters; Contact BullyHunter17 for more info.
  11. It will be slower, since you won't be required to abandon your existing items in order to use it, unlike the EvoX UV
  12. Indeed. The network effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect) is extremely valuable, and right now LL is at risk of losing it.
  13. It depends on how you want to control which texture is being applied. How do you want to control which texture is chosen?
  14. This will eventually happen to all operating systems that SL supports, if the decrease in development cost outweighs whatever fees SL must pay to use Unity. If that happens, the incentive to keep maintaining third-party viewers will completely die off, assuming they are not outright banned to begin with in the future.
  15. Well with Cool VL Viewer, you can always just turn PBR off too. Then your viewer will be even faster!
  16. Most laptops nowadays are too thin to have efficient cooling, so having a cooling pad is necessary for doing anything compute-intensive on some of them if you want to preserve the longevity of your hardware.
  17. No, all textures larger than 1024 will cost more.
  18. It may also be something to do with the recent CrowdStrike BSOD incident: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_CrowdStrike_incident
  19. They were raised with idiot-proof software, with even stuff as simple as the filesystem completely abstracted away. Their tech illiteracy is mostly a consequence of this.
  20. If you are on a budget but do have some technical knowledge, used server GPUs like the NVIDIA Tesla P4 through P100 are also an option. If your CPU has integrated graphics, you can use NVIDIA Optimus to route the video out through your iGPU. Some AMD Server GPUs (Instinct series) have mini displayport video outputs that you can use if you flash the GPU's BIOS with a BIOS from one of their desktop cards. Or of course you could just use Cool VL Viewer and avoid having to compensate for software bloat altogether.
  21. TL;DR there is no way to fix it besides using a different viewer, like this one: http://sldev.free.fr/
