What good deeds have you done today?

Your mileage will vary greatly depending on the distribution you choose. Some are built with stability in mind, and are difficult to break things on (OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Mint, etc.) Others like Arch Linux are more prone to faults.

The ugliness that people are seeing is likely for 2 reasons: 1) Some creators who want to try putting PBR materials on their stuff may be overdoing it. 2) Many people are using environment settings that are being broken by PBR as a result of changes. Don't wait for the winds to shift. Adjust your sails to the wind. LL isn't going to do anything about it at the end of the day, so all you can do is try to help people who are affected the most.

I Have Gone on My Last Cam Sim, That's It, The End

Just search for only demo items by setting the price filter to 0-1L$, and you will eliminate most of the separate color listings. -

If my memory serves me correctly, Lelutka did have duplicate regions for a couple of their giveaways. -
If you want, I can make a scripted sign that will be difficult to derender. Send me a notecard inworld if you are interested.

They probably just haven't had anyone say something about this issue before. From our conversation, I recall you use Ubuntu with the GNOME desktop environment. Most other desktop environments (Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE, etc.) have some sort of hint that another window has been opened, such as a flashing taskbar icon or a little box displaying the number of windows open for a particular application. So many other Linux users will realize that another window is opened, but just not in focus. I have never used GNOME before, but it is possible that it doesn't hint that new windows are being opened very well.

Nah, its a viewer-specific bug. Every other viewer besides Firestorm (and Firestorm forks) doesn't have this problem. Most of Firestorm testing is done on Windows due to its near monopoly on desktop computing, so of course they aren't going to catch something like this.

Oh, I don't mean for you to build something that extends past your own parcel. Just build a skybox that covers your own land, but no more. Even this should disrupt the offending skybox, since it is already overlapping with your land.
-
If the skybox is overlapping with your land, it may be possible to put up your own skybox at the same height. Simply extend the box to cover your entire parcel, then raise it to the same height as the other skybox. If the other skybox has thin enough walls, your own skybox will poke through and obstruct the walls of the other skybox. This will disrupt whatever view the owner has of their own skybox, and may make them consider resizing or removing it.

That reminds me, I really wish creators would keep their older items around. Often times they will remove older products from their stores completely, even if there is still demand for them. Which means that if you have a no-transfer item that has been discontinued, anyone else who wants it has no way of getting it. And of course for your issue, it could have been at least partially solved by making items modifiable, but that is too much to ask for the merchant class :c

They have 3 choices, realistically. 1) Abandon PBR until a more efficient Vulkan renderer is developed. 2) Stop mantaining the C++/OpenGL-based viewer and start porting the mobile Unity-based viewer to desktop. 3) Do neither and just let everyone suffer the consequences. They are probably going to do option 3 knowing them, but option 2 would likely make the most sense in the short term if they do the cost/benefit analysis.

Just downgrade back to 6.6.17 for now. 7.1.9 is alpha-quality software, and anyone who says otherwise is delusional.

Yep. Even if people have sufficient hardware to run the latest viewers comfortably, many still rely on SL being somewhat lightweight because of this.

Perhaps lack of OpenGL driver optimization on Windows compared to Linux is the real reason people see double their FPS on Linux (yes you claimed this was silly, but multiple people from the Firestorm support group have experienced this, even after whitelisting.)

Wait what happened to IMVU? It has been years since I ever went there

It is all about cutting development costs. Studios are only willing to do the bare minimum optimization required for the games to run on midrange hardware at all, and it will only get worse as more powerful hardware is released.

If you need lots of VRAM, are looking to save money, and are not afraid of troubleshooting hardware/software issues, then you can look into getting a used server GPU. Examples: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/tesla-p100-pcie-16-gb.c2888 https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-instinct-mi25.c2983 You will of course need a fan adapter in order to push air through the passive cooler, of which there are many different options depending on the GPU you choose. And for the MI25, you will need to replace the stock BIOS with a BIOS flasher such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Organizer-Socket-Adpter-Programmer-CH341A/dp/B07R5LPTYM/ref=sr_1_1 I have done this before with a few different cards, so contact me if you would like more info 😄
