  1. I know I have said this many times, but you should look at Cool VL Viewer. It has a switch that will allow you to disable PBR. http://sldev.free.fr/
  2. Hypothetically it would be easy (easier) to implement a "convert to mesh" button for prim-based objects, since DAE export for prims already exists.
  3. I wasn't being entirely serious about that. But it is stupid to arbitrarily raise requirements and expect people to not push back in some way.
  4. The new requirements only apply to viewers that don't have the older rendering engine. Only one viewer still has it (Cool VL Viewer as I have said many times,) but I suspect it will be forked later to create a viewer more like Firestorm but without the PBR requirement. If nobody else does it, I will do it myself once I am more confident in my abilities.
  5. No, EEP didn't impose crippling performance penalties on my hardware. Change can be good if the positives outweigh the negatives (like the upcoming transition from vivox to WebRTC; reducing dependency on proprietary software is always a good thing.) PBR though, I just don't see how the benefits outweigh the costs. Too many people will be negatively affected by this. Even if people still end up using PBR in their stuff, there are things that can be done to make it visible to non-PBR viewers. As someone familiar with viewer development, I can say that it is possible to implement workarounds.
  6. Why don't you set up a charity to buy people hardware then? No? Opinion discarded, I will proceed with my current plans to build a base of users large enough to halt the demand for PBR products.
  7. It is going to make it better for the users with more money to spend, which in the end is all LL really has the incentive to care about.
  8. Thats why most people with these systems left ALM disabled, myself included. Or you could just use Cool VL viewer, which makes PBR optional: http://sldev.free.fr/
  9. Such a viewer already exists. It is called Cool VL Viewer, and you can get it here: http://sldev.free.fr/ You can disable PBR in it, unlike any other viewer.
  10. Use Cool VL Viewer if you don't like PBR. It allows you to disable PBR if needed. You can get it here: http://sldev.free.fr/
  11. Not everyone has a dedicated GPU. The vast majority of systems have only integrated graphics, most of which are inadequate for rendering PBR.
  12. Its a hypothetical scenario. I don't care how fundamental of a change it is, I am just wondering what would happen. I don't see how this is hard to understand.
  13. Someone inworld told me that the FS team was being heavily pressured by LL to add PBR to the viewer. The same exact person told me that FS has 40-50% of the userbase. Does that not mean the the firestorm team has at least some bargaining power over the PBR implementation and never realized it? Meaning: If FS rolled back PBR because people didn't like it, then how much backlash would LL face if they decided to be stupid and remove FS from the TPV list and block logins?
  14. If you use Cool VL viewer, you can turn off PBR. http://sldev.free.fr/
  15. There is also OpenSim, which shouldn't block people logging in on older viewers, and therefore likely won't have a lot of PBR content. I honestly think it is going to become a lot more popular in the near future if the current en*****tification of SL continues. Also if you are a creator reading this and the majority of your real life income comes from SL, I highly advise that you diversify your income sources. Spend a few minutes on any OpenSim grid, and you will see why I say this.
  16. You can still compile old Firestorm versions from source, and they (at least in my experience) will not be blocked from logging in. Make sure to do this as soon as possible, since dependency links don't always stay around forever.
  17. Use Cool VL Viewer, and you will be able to turn PBR off. Not only that, but it will auto-generate textures for PBR items without fallback textures. So you can worry less about PBR-only stuff not rendering properly 😄
  18. They often use other messaging applications. If you see any child/younger looking user with a long hexadecimal string in their profile, that is their ID for their messaging client. It is a good idea to steer clear of anyone implying that they use external messaging programs for this purpose.
  19. In situations like this, it is better to separate what you can control and what you cannot control. Only then can you decide how to proceed. You can't control the rules LL decides, and you can't control what they do with the information you send to their servers (IMs, attachment changes, etc.) All you can change is your own actions.
  20. It isn't too late to switch to Cool VL Viewer. It allows you to enable and disable PBR, and is much faster in both rendering modes anyways. The UI is clunky at first, but you get used to it over time.
  21. No doubt going to be a neural network that scans uploaded textures and flags them for human review. Buckle up, everyone.
