  1. Does anyone have tips to make speculars better affect faces for crystals?

I'm not looking for depth or to use PBR, I'm looking to make light faces realistically as possible, without relying on diffuse maps with lighting baked onto them. I've seen most people use baked lighting for stunning results with jewelry, but the necklace I'm working on has a large, cartoony gem, and I feel the baked lighting pushes the cartoon feel too far lol.

I have seen items make full faces light up in Second Life, instead of the directionless, soft light the generated AO map is giving me. Figuring out how to do it is another thing!

First picture shows what diffuse map with lighting baked onto looks like, second picture shows what it looks like with the generated AO map at around Glossiness 100, third picture is the generated AO map for the second picture. The first picture is ideally what the speculars would act like.

In the world of SL animations, there are so many constantly changing variables that it's hard for anyone to control them and set any standard. It is a common misconception that height is playing a significant role in SL avatar animations. For more info, please read here:

This doesn't affect what I'm aiming for, but thank you!

Like Rohana mentioned, it's pretty arbitrary. If an animation seller is offering different height options, they should tell you what size each animation is (roughly) meant for.

At least one thing where it really matters is ground sits (and regular unscripted sit-on-object)! If you're too tall or short, you'll either sink into the ground or hover above it. 🙂 While you can adjust your avatar's hover height, it affects all animations and needs to be adjusted back when you stop groundsitting.

Yeah, the numbers the animation sellers list are what I'm after.

going way back in the day, a group of AO makers decided amongst themselves that Short = 155cm, Medium = 185cm and Tall = 215cm

my AO is from back in the day and contains 3 sets of animations in each of these sizes. I use the 185cm set myself which is pretty ok even when I am 185cm by the Linden viewer body shape ruler (which is actually wrong by the more true measure that TPVs typically use. My avatar is actually taller than 185cm by true measure)

as Wulfie mentions it affects ground sits. The smaller sizes place the avatar closer to the ground than the taller sizes

sometimes also is useful when we sit on an object and override the object animation (if any) with our AO. The smaller sizes will show us sitting lower on the object surface, the taller sizes show us sitting higher from the surface

also as well, when we wear really really high heels then the Tall (215 cm) version puts  our avatar up higher when we stand so our very high heels don't sink into the ground. This used to be a problem back in the day, it has tho been pretty much negated with Hover Height since

Thank you so much, this is what I was looking for ;_; Heels slipped my mind, for what I'm making it'd be relevant, I really appreciate you bringing up stuff that is considered a problem of the past!

You could use these as they are, but you would have different objects that can be colored separately rather than different faces of one object.

If you join them after importing them, you could use "Edit linked" to color the different parts OR click on each part to select the the face to color. The arrows to run through each face of an object only work when the one object has multiple faces and doesn't work through different objects that are linked.

If you are using LSL to color faces, you would have to treat them as different objects rather than different faces.

If they're separate objects, they'll be 3 attachments to an avatar, and the objects are 0.0004 apart at most, switching between them with clicking isn't really an option.

Merging them all together in blender was a good enough fix, thank you for your input though!

  4. I recommend you start with something easy to rig, like hairpins, nails, rings, anything which won't use multiple bones, or unrigged accessories or trinkets.

The Second Life beta grid is made to test your products. If you don't feel confident in it you can ask friends to beta test or hire testers.

Legacy is an easy body to get a dev kit for. They will give you the dev kit for Mesh Body Classic first, to make a piece for and upload to Marketplace, and then give you the dev kit for their new Legacy body.

Utilizator has free dev kits, if you're happy to make items for furries August Heads and Apricot Paws have free dev kits. Anime and furry communities don't have super strict rules, you get the dev kit when you purchase the product, some you don't need to buy anything.

With dev kits you can do rigging without Avastar. Here's a super basic guide. I recommend you don't transfer weights and go into Object Data Properties > select the bone you want to rig to > Weight Paint. Doing it by hand has better results.

Good luck, feel free to contact me if you want any help!

  5. I have a set of nails with different mesh layers to make changing texture details easier. Each mesh has a different material+name in Blender, it doesn't matter if they're uploaded together, or separately and joined in-game, I can't switch between faces in the Build window. It will select one face and act like the rest don't exist.

Is there a minimum distance to make separate faces work? Is there anything I should do differently?

Yes, unfortunately a lot of the j-fashion items here are on the trendier side.. school uniform/seifuku, general kawaii (aka pastel colors everywhere), anime-inspired stuff, etc etc. They're cute styles but I love elegant, dolly looks or just very over the top stuff. But there are definitely still creators who make high quality lolita inspired items.

I would also suggest if you're willing to go through the hassle of putting outdated clothes on a mesh body (Given you're using one -- if not, you got it easy) looking into some older stuff on the Marketboard. I browse gachas or old listings for hours when bored and occasionally stumble across lolita clothing meant for old system bodies (but not so old that they're pure prim and flexi) that fit okay on my maitreya body, given it doesn't have clothing layers and is actually full mesh. Lolita doesn't show enough skin to matter, luckily, so unless the mesh body is just outrageously different in size from a regular system body, they tend to work. It actually seems like there was more available 6+ years ago than there is now, sadly, but the consequence of that is that they can look outdated.

I completely agree, I know Second Life is often where people dress how they wouldn't in real life, but I want to dress up like a doll lol. This thread has brought heaps of stores I didn't know onto my radar, it's great there are active EGL creators, even if they're difficult to find without help.

Thank you, I'll give it a try! I spent like a hour making Maitreya fit a Legacy dress (Bearcat.egg makes such phenomenal pieces and I caved), it should be way easier to alpha bodies to fit system based dresses.

Yeah, my EGL av has been around since waaay before mesh and I still remember many of the old brands fondly (CanalGrande! LicoLico! RMK! Umi Usagi! Silent Sparrow before she switched to making plushies!). Ambrosia are still around and rigging for Maitreya, and nekotron have some cute things, but I can't think of any others that haven't been mentioned.

It's a shame so many old stores are closed now. The blog posts for so many of the stores you listed have gorgeous pieces. Thank you so much!

I will go through my inventory later to look for more fantasy-style houses, but there is this house by HISA that definitely fits a 512. It is going to be hard to find really detailed houses to fit that size parcel.

I see what you mean, most people focus on larger houses, it's a shame, I like tiny ones. Thank you, I went with La Maisonette D'Aurora!

MG Creation's buildings are gorgeous, I love BéBé Cottage. When I get enough money I think I'll be buying it lol. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I've bought a house and added grass and climbing plants to the roof, it's a little tedious but worth it. Heima has some gorgeous houses.

Starlight Designs have a fairy house like the one from Tinkerbell, you can visit them inworld for a demo.

    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mulberry Isle/101/160/24

Sadly their store is no longer in-world unless the creator hasn't updated their info. The Teapot Fairy House is such a cute house though, I wish they made more. Thank you so much!

  8. I'm looking for houses with a fantasy, mermaid, or country cottage look, with little to no modern or tudor elements. I would prefer smaller houses, my land is 512 sqm but resizing is fine!

Anything is a go if it has turf roofs, round windows, window seats, seashells and gems, curved and unorthodox roofs, vines, stained glass, buildings in trees, interesting speculars and glow, or if you think it's pretty lol.

Attached img are houses with elements I'd love to see in Second Life. If you have a house (or furniture!) but it doesn't look like any pics please post it anyway!

Hiya! One good way to find things like this is to hunt around the SoKawaiiSundays event galleries on Seraphim and check out some of the stores that come up. A new gallery is posted every Sunday on https://www.seraphimsl.com/ . Last week's gallery is here (check some things out - they might still be on sale) - https://www.seraphimsl.com/2023/06/17/dont-let-anyone-say-youre-not-cute-signed-sokawaiisundays/ . It's always a random mix, but you might come across some good stores/finds that way.

In addition, speaking of stores, try these:

I gave up on SoKawaiiSundays, but I should really keep tabs on it again, there were some adorable items in the Seraphim post. These are some great picks, thank you so much!

I also love lolita. Here's a few spots I've found dresses:

    ALTAIR*

HIME*DREAM (their Marketplace is out of date, shop in-world instead)

    Belle Epoque

    Mikunch

    =Zenith= (no Marketplace store available)

These are absolutely wonderful, thank you! I knew Marketplace was lacking listings omg.

I wear EGL in real life, and the suggestions above are all pretty good.

The creator "Violent Seduction" has some lolita pieces, there are also some lolita esque items in gachas, can't pinpoint any brands tho. Other j-fashion items, like nanchatte or general kawaii items, are more common.

Bare Rose has some pieces that fit the j-fashion or lolita aesthetic. I don't like the shoes that come with their outfits, but otherwise they're decent for a very niche, overly exaggerated side of j-fashion.

Thank you so much! I noticed the huge focus on nanchette, I just can't get into it 😭 It's great to see brands like Bare Rose going for exaggerated looks, I was hoping for a store like that!

There are some full perm cats on the marketplace with textures you could edit, like this one

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Feliz-Cat-Regular-MESH-FULL-PERM/9386619

And this store has some cats, I think the textures come with them but you may need to double check with the creator

    https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/46293

    Thank you!

I love the Feliz cat. I always find more gacha and cartoon cats when looking on MP, it's great to have something realistic linked lol.

  11. Looking for a black/ginger tortoiseshell cat with no to minimal white. Static, animesh, accessory, anything is ok! Modifiable cats with UV maps offered are good too.

I want to get my friend a cat like hers in real life but tortoiseshells are super neglected. No matter what keywords I use I can't find any.

Do you mean that the unpacker should give the user a folder with subfolders? It's not possible to create a complex structure like that with LSL.

If you use Marketplace, you can structure the product folder so that the product arrives unpacked and organized with subfolders. That way you won't need miles-long names either.

I was hoping to do that, it's a shame it isn't possible.

MP tells me there's no version folder when I use subfolders. I figured the reason why unpackers are used but MP has been really buggy for me lol. I'll try using no unpackers with MP again!

  13. I want to make an unpacker with pre-unpacked folders in it. The one way I know how to accomplish want I want is individual unpackers for each folder, but it's not ideal and way more work than I want for customers.

    Any advice is super appreciated!
