  1. My experience has been similar, but as long as you're not interested in "winning," you can still have enjoyable discussions. When I find someone who is inflexible on their position, I ask questions about the things that lead them to hold their position. Often the conclusion is sacred, but not the means of getting there; it may be okay to ask them to explain their premises. Either I learn something that I missed, or I get to learn a bit about how others think.
  2. I might be projecting here, but I know I feel awkward if I visit a Costco-sized club and have to do a big dramatic open-air hike toward the only 2-3 people in the place. Clubs might lease giant parcels or full regions in order to support large capacity, but they need to consume most of the space with stuff unrelated to the main club area if they want a cozy space that encourages mingling. Why not make it a signage hallway for upcoming events, cultural cues, and the occasional vendor?
