  1. Thanks for the info. i have a spare card coming and might take it apart from the get go- i'd updated a now gone computer couple years back an think i have some pretty good thermal grease laying around. i didn't think 80c was high, while running Firestorm i pulled up the NVIDIA server app an the temp is running about 70, 71. But if i understand you right there might be hotspots? I'd thought using the older driver fixed the issue- well, hoped. But after i wrote my previous post, i went in world today an started having problems again. It is so odd how it comes an goes. For the time being, my workaround seems to be using Singularity. It's old, it's slow, it loads textures at a snail's pace, but no crashes. Worst case, i switch desktops around an see how the other one behaves. A little bit of a pita but doable.
  2. Thanks for responding. Heat has occurred to me, when i ran that benchmark it got up to maybe 80C. Repasting hadn't occurred to me, though. i should have some around somewhere. That benchmark displays temperature as it runs; i was getting about 80c during the test. Is that excessive? i don't know, finding operating temp specs has been difficult. Except that earlier in this thread someone mentions issues after a driver update they were having issues... To that end, i thought i'd go to an older driver. i mean, the card's pretty ancient, how many times can a driver be updated? i was having issues trying to do it in Ubuntu- i did manage to back up some with the Windows driver, but the downloads from NVIDIA only go so far back, and it is still crashing Windows. At this point i'll also mention that on both my desktops, running FS has meant occasional screen freezes that last maybe 20 seconds or so, and that's gone on for a long time now. That's been with Ubuntu, Mint, MX Linux, and antiX. And the same issue running Windows, just not as bad. But then this started up with the crashes on the computer i now use for SL, and it's also the latest one operating systems and drivers have been installed on. i'm not super savvy with command-line stuff, and i was running into issues trying to roll back the driver in Ubuntu. The whole reason i was running Ubuntu was out of desperation- that's the distro FS for Linux is developed on. Normally i'm a MX gurl. So Ubuntu showed me the driver i wanted to try but would error out trying to install any but the latest, and trying to do it manually meant all sorts of things i'm not familiar with involving shutting down the entire graphical interface. So... scrap Ubuntu. i reinstalled my usual daily driver, MX Linux (Debian based distro) and when it came time to install the driver, i was able to easily install the older driver i have wanted to try, through the OS, without having to be too familiar with command line operation. And i spent... probably three or four hours in world today, and so far, knock on wood textures, it's run superbly. No freezes, no crashes. Longer than it's been being between issues, so i'm hopeful that this was really a driver issue. i'm tempted to run in Windows again and see if that still crashes or freezes, and then i'll really and truly think it may be solved. We'll see. Thanks for responding, i'll keep the thermal paste in mind if this doesn't work, and when that spare card comes in i may just go ahead and take it apart and repaste it, then install that card. Thanks again and i'll update this thread after i've found if my driver change works or not in the long term.
  3. Necrothread bump. i'm currently struggling with similar issues to the OP, and i hate that it might be a hardware issue. i've two modest older systems running 8gb RAM each and GT 635 cards, and i'm not really able to place one through its paces but the one i use for SL just keeps crashing, and often a relog gives me the cloud, contact list and inventory issues until i exit and do it again. This is Firestorm and Alchemy, in Ubuntu and Windows. The official SL viewer in Windows will give me the BSOD. Sometimes in Linux the third party viewers simply crash, sometimes they freeze the system up. i don't know. i've run Memtest from Grub, and let the whole thing run though to end with no errors. Got another GT 635 coming and have downloaded Uningine Superposition to try and force a non-SL-viewer crash. This is getting very frustrating.
  4. Well, i been wanting a fresh new head, and i got one. Between the LeLutka Noel, and LOGO's Noelle? The Noelle is very much 'me'. Eventually, i might shop around for an EvoX skin that i really fit into, but for now i'm rockin' it with one of my favorite old Pink Fuel system skins (and of course the BOM layers for my body). It was much kinder to this skin, than the LeLutka Noel, and i just couldn't get the shape anything close to what appeals to me. Logo Noelle was a natural, compared to LeL Noel. Went back and got that anims fatpack before the sale ended, and picked up a few of the AOs. i'm really happy with this head- new year, new me.
  5. *chuckles* Yeah i figured that out today, thanks though. i tried the Lelutka Noel, and just don't like it. i know Lelutka is the modern Catwa (and i never liked those, either because i like to be difficult) but yeah no i couldn't get it shaped anything to my satisfaction, and i didn't like its treatment of my favorite Pink Fuel skins. i felt hideous. LOGO Noel, on the other hand... oh, my God. i love it! it has the shine, it doesn't seem to glitch the hairstyle in question (which i don't even think looks right on me now, but that's beside the point, the point is i don't want it glitching with hairs just to have a little shine), and yes, i did see that LOGO also lets you switch between Classic and EvoX, and it is much, much, much much much kinder to my PF than the Lelutka was, and i tweaked a shape out of it that i'm quite happy with. Once i was satisfied, ran down to LOGO before the goodies end and grabbed that animation fatpack at the discounted price, and picked up three of the AOs, which play real nice with the Vista full-body i use. i was very determined to know what i was going to settle on before i invested any money, well, i've paid my money and made my choice. So i'm a happy gurl now, thanks for everyone who commented.
  6. Thank You for the reply! Yes i understand that, and indeed, one of my hairs (a Stealthic GG hair) specifically mentions appliers in the accompanying notecard as an issue (strangely, i hadn't noticed such extreme effects with my Normie head, however). The first thing i did when i chose one of the LAQ clearance heads (i got them all at that price) was BOM-enable it because my favorite Pink Fuel skins i've been wearing are not appliers- i wear the system skins for the face and then of course mesh body BOM layers for the rest. But, like the OP, i'm missing that shine. Unless You're saying since this thread was created, they've somehow made Materials into BOM? It was my understanding from the thread that it was a bit of a stretch to expect Baked On textures to include specular data, and that mesh still depended upon appliers for things such as body shine when viewed with Advanced Lighting. Thus (and i'd meant to attach the quote the first time) when JadoreChanel said: i speculated that the LAQ HUD shine cut off on the upper part of the nose to stay well clear from the hair. Something my Omega shine doesn't, with the resulting hair issue. i'm fixin' to look through that main LAQ master HUD again and all the little accessories i hastily snapped up at the clearance sale, and see if i can find what Jadore found.
  7. Bump please. Is it the main (big) HUD, or an extra little HUD? I have taken advantage of the LAQ L$15 sale and scarfed up just about everything I saw, including some of the specialized HUDs. I'm having the same issue but with a twist- I have an Omega shine applier that I had for my Utilizator Normie head, but I find the tattoo layer is interfering with my favorite hairs. Which I suspect also is the reason you say it only goes to the top of the nose with the HUD... I don't get this problem with my Normie but I'm ready for a change and even though I snagged the LOGO and LeLutka Xmas heads, not all eager to just have to go all EvoX when it's not necessary to me...
  8. Thank you! It also didn't occur to me there might be a HUD with Noelle- i've not had time to unpack it. i wondered if EvoX was a common standard (like the SLUV), or proprietary. In which case, licensable.
  9. i went down there to get that head and noticed they have an animation add-on fatpack for like 90% off. Add with one click, it says. Add to... the head's HUD? Or do you need one of the AOs i saw down there to add it to? i mean, i tested the demo post stand and like them on the head i wear now, but if i must wear the Logo head to add them to an AO then maybe not for me, as i'd want to use them Logo head or no Logo head.
  10. I'm fine with my old Normie head but i'mma not gonna turn down a free head, either. Well it's Christmas, so.. yeah i noticed that. So i take it from that advert, and other things i read, that the Evo X is a defacto common mapping now? i wouldn't know i still use the SLUV. but it's nice to know. i've got the Lel Noel for fiddling about with (along with all those older $L15 LAQ heads) so sure i'll go get me one of these. Doubt i'll change over to one but you never know.
  11. Just enjoying the time of year y'all. Merry Christmas!
  12. i recently discovered how to make basic textures (i've been making myself some tattoo layers) and with Gimp i've been noticing if i start out with a really large image, and shrink it down too much to fit, then i'm losing some definition.... i've tried the different scaling options and it doesn't seem to make much difference. i'm finding out to try and start with something already close to the image. The closer you can get to the size you need already it seems the better. LOL and TBH I've been saving to PNG but didn't even think about if the default settings are good enough, glad to hear it sounds as if they may be, thanks.
  13. Thanks for the heads up- I was just there (when i was glommed onto the Omega BoM adapter) and didn't immediately see fantasy skins- but i wasn't looking for them, either. I was there looking for Asian and/or something vaguely Polynesian with Petite shading for my Human self. There was nothing in that genre that properly mapped out on my head- when it comes to skins made to be compatible with certain heads, the closest for me would be like LOGO, maybe LAQ sometimes. I can say pretty confidently that if its optimised for like Catwa or Genus and the like, probably look pretty horrid on me, because some of what i tried turned my face into a real mess- but that's what demos are for. In any event i don't show my Fae side enough to justify paying too much. Now, if my Mistress thinks otherwise, that may change... but for now it's not worth dropping a large sum on it. But I appreciate the tip!
