  1. Routing all sales through the marketplace is a very poor decision....

    1) Fees - it will force merchants to pay the LL fee for sales they previously did not have to pay it on hence all prices will rise

    2) Single point of failure. The marketplace has maintenance so should all commerce in SL grind to a halt as a result?

    3) There are alternatives.

  2. In my humble opinion there should indeed be 2FA but it should only be triggered when logging in from a different IP address from the one LL previously had a logon from that account on (and at a minimum of 30 days too just to keep tabs).

2FA should not be mandatory - if people do not wish to take the extra steps to secure their account then they can elect not to and then deal with the consequences.

There should not be a bonus award in L$ for having 2FA active as that will get abused by multiple account creators.

Basically - provide the framework to secure the account and payment info for that who wish to use it and then let people make up their own minds.

  3. I'm pretty sure "real models" do not provide value for money - neither for the model nor for those who may want to hire them.

As others have stated, a model would need to have several mesh bodies (as well as heads for hair/makeup etc.). That's not cheap.

A content creator will no doubt already have the mesh bodies and heads that they create content for - either on themselves or alts. So using their own resources makes sense.

Due to the permissions system a model essentially gets free stuff each photoshoot when they work for a content creator - expecting to get paid on top of that is probably asking a lot.

Unlike real life - a model in SL requires no skills at all - just an injection of L$ and shopping. Literally anyone can be a model so if you want to make it you have to be something outstanding and that means a heck of a lot of work. Honestly I'd say it's just not worth it.

  4. That laptop is total overkill for Second Life really - providing that you are able to remove the bloatware that will probably come preinstalled then it will be more than adequate for running SL but the FPS you get will depend on how pretty you want things to look and how badly optimised all that mesh stuff is people are wearing.

I average anything from 15 to 80 fps on populated sims - again it all depends on the mesh stuff more than anything. Not sure what type of Mac you have and whether or not you use Mac specific apps so only you will know if it makes sense to make the switch.

An alternative to potentially wasting a heap of money would be to create a Bootcamp partition and seeing how well SL performs running under Windows on your Mac.

  5. @emilia Avindar I'd advise you to raise the outfit issue in the Firestorm Support Group - it may be a case of missing inventory like @Chic Aeon said and that will involve manual copying of files but the support group has really great step by step guides that anyone can follow as long as they read them well. If it is not solved by the missing inventory fix then it could well be a bug in Firestorm that will need to be raised.

  6. You will generally get better performance from the LL viewer than from FS because FS has extras in it that the LL viewer does not have - all those nice to have things that you will miss.

Rather than continue bashing FS maybe you can turn it around and try to constructively make it better by running comparisons with exactly the same settings for sky, draw distance etc and then if there is noticeably significant differences raise (or add to) a JIRA on the FS site?

  7. 21 minutes ago, Lillith Hapmouche said:

For my liking, Mr. Creep is getting away pretty much untouched, while the OP gets to take "all the blame".

Now (luckily?), details like what was actually written are left out, perhaps for the better... but well, it kinda irks me.

In a way yes but remember Mr Creep did it in private whereas OP took it public when it was not needed.

  8. Never ever take what is said in IM to local chat without the express permission of all involved - not only it is exceptionally rude (no matter what was said in IM) but it is also against the ToS and potentially could lead to an abuse report against yourself.

Just mute and get on with your Second Life

  9. You should consider going premium and buying yourself (via the land auctions) 1024sq m of land - you can get some real cheap deals and it's ideal if you want a skybox because it does not matter what garbage is at ground level.

Considering the premium fee includes giving you 300L$ a week it's pretty hard to find any rental that comes close.

That and you have total control over your land - no landlord. You can grant access as you see fit.

  10. I'd like to do some shopping but I can't.

MP has enough server capacity for the general needs based upon a lot of stats that I am sure LL has. For a merchant to release an almost free premium item onto the MP without expecting it to crash is silly. Thats like a major concert event in Ticktmaster (when we had concerts) - they beef up capacity to cope with the expected demand.

This is NOT the way merchants should be going with releases - they have regions that's what they are for so that their business not not impact upon everyone else on the grid.

  11. Double check that your head / body is set to BOM. If it is then sometimes the hairbase just does not appear right away (but does when you slip into edit mode). Moving to another sim may help it appear correctly.

  12. Giving "free" L$ to new residents may at first seem like a good idea until you realise that someone actually ends up footing the bill.

People will abuse the system - they will create as many alts as they can and then siphon off the L$ into their main account.

Giving new residents even a modest amount (around L$ 300) will mean that many of the valuable experiences they can gather new resident support areas and gateways will be skipped.

The L$ will be devalued on a constant basis as more and more free L$ is pumped into the zombie army of alts created by those who abuse it.

Great idea in principle but guaranteed to fail simply because of the way it will be abused.

  13. If you do not want anyone to take a picture or video of your creations then best bet is not to upload them in SL or anywhere else on the Internet for that matter. It's unfortunate but the norm for how creative arts are treated these days.

Just to clarify as someone took offense at my comment above - I am not saying that this is right or should happen. I am simply stating that it does and will happen so creators of any content be it in SL or the RL need to be aware that people will download their stuff without paying for it because they consider that to be their right.

Now maybe I can avoid the pitchforks and mobs.

  14. In all honesty @Clarapatra Windows Defender is probably all you really need - many firewall/AV companies sell you snake oil and rely upon the paranoia from the days before Microsoft took internet security seriously for the home user. You may find that you are paying for something that you already have as part of the operating system and do not need all the additional bells and whistles that the AV suites need (with the system overheads too).

  15. I would have to say a hard "No" to the idea of polls - for many reasons....

Some other forums have become a graveyard of polls created by people wanting to push their agenda on how they want the game to go.

Polls can and indeed are used to abuse others.

A poll provides far less meaningful debate than an actual debate does.

Those really wanting to use a poll already can - they just need to link to it.

  16. All of the mobile device clients offer more of an "SL Lite" experience due to the nature of the beast that SL is. As long as you are happy with what is essentially a text based client (as the 3D options are very limited) then you can run SL on an iPad.
