Great pic, wonderful words, beautiful thoughts.

Thank you, and Happy Pride to you too.

(BTW I hope you don't mind but I have downloaded a copy of this and it's now the desktop wallpaper on my laptop for the rest of the month).

Thank you so much for your compliment! Of course I don't mind :)

    Happy pride!!

  2. The theme for SL Pride this year is "together"...together in unity, life, health, harmony spirit, love, power, strength, mind, body, and peace. In light of all the recent tragedies, we should take a moment to reflect on bringing the human race together - all sexual orientations, genders, and races. Happy pride month everyone!

If you have more than 1 region, it's possible (for a fee, if you're moving existing one) to put them next to each other. Then you can separate residental and business areas into different regions, so they won't impact each other. It is not possible to separate region's resources within 1 region (aside of LI per parcel), though. You can minimize impact of FPS "lag" by keeping residental/public areas on one level and business ones on another one, but that's about it.

thank you @steeljane42! When you say keep them on a different level do you mean putting them at different elevations?

If you are talking about a single region and "lag" then the answer is NO, but careful planning can help a lot.  Keeping your club area in a corner somewhat near the edge of the region will help lag in that PART of lag is dependent on viewing distance and happily not everyone has their viewers set to see across a whole sim (mine is typically at 120 which works well for me).  So buffer areas you expect to be busy with ones that are for show and green space.

Watch trees as some can be very lag producing.   Unfortunately you can't do all that much about what your renters put in the homes and shops; you can only do your best to limit any issues.  If your houses have most of the windows pointed away from  streets and for example toward the sim edge and ocean, that will help.

You might look at some role play sims. Some are good and some awful of course. Asphyxiation Point did a very good job with design but it is gone now.   Businesses will not necessary (and often not) have a lot of traffic so it is mostly the clubs that might be an issue.  You can also build underground in some places if that works with your plans.

Something not pertaining to lag but very important is to test the LODs of the buildings and make sure that they don't break apart "at least" at LOD2 setting (lower would be better of course).    And watch your frames per second as you are setting up your areas to make sure that you didn't inadvertently use heavy mesh that contributes to molasses FPS rates :D.

If you want to expand in the future you could use a homestead sim just for residential and parks and such. Keep any clubs off of those though.

    Have fun!!!!

Thanks so much for your detailed response @Chic Aeon! You're suggestion to place a club in the corner might be a good idea. I'd like to have a venue that can host maybe 20-25 avatars at a time - nothing crazy. So placing it in a corner on one side with perhaps a park and some light retail could help if I have residential parcels on the opposite side of the sim?

I have much to learn though ultimately I would like to bring in a landscaper and sim planner to help with the process since this will be my first go and I really want to provide a rock solid experience for guests.

A single region is allotted a fixed amount of resources. While prim limits and land size can be limited by the size of the parcel itself, parcels otherwise share all the region's resources with each other. Anyone's who rented in a region knows that one person who makes the sim run terrible which is why some rental groups have strict limitations on what can be on what sim with many downright banning certain establishments (namely clubs) due to the problems they cause for other tenants.

That said, if you want to host clubs or large businesses, it's better to dedicated an entire region for that purpose as opposed to lumping it in with a residential sim. Regularly high latency will quickly run off potential or current tenants.

@Secondary Lionheart thank you for clarifying that bit! Since this will be my first sim I'd rather keep business on the smaller side (small-medium businesses and a small club that can host 25 avatars max) would that still bring a high latency for residents on the opposite side of the sim if there are small business and an open park (or some other large, relatively lightly used public space) between the two. To clarify I've been considering full regions since they can handle more people and have better performance since the sim will be a city/urban community sim with apartments and high-rises.

  4. Hi all,

I'm in the very early stages of planning my own community and had a few questions. I'd like to create a mixed use rp city sim with residential (apartments and houses) public spaces (restaurants, parks, public services), and small-mid sized businesses. Though, I'd like the option to expand those in the future if business goes well and perhaps include a nightclub(s). However, lag is real! Is it possible to expand to regions and/or divide one up so that businesses or clubs don't negatively impact those living on the sim?

  5. As the title suggests, my clothes are not attaching correctly. Today I switched from appliers to using BoM skin (body only). However, when I went to put on an outfit the clothes were attached at weird places (picture below). It seems to only happen to clothes I used in previously saved outfits.

How I arrived at this problem: In making the switch over to BoM I ended up clearing the cache (and inventory cache) to try to get BoM to work with the Catwa head, but the face applier I have isn't BoM compatible. After applying the BoM Stray Dog skin to the body I tried to put on previously saved outfits, but the outfits pane was stuck on a spinning wheel. Relogged then tried put on clothes again, same attachment issue. So I deleted all my outfits (that was painful) and tried again. Same issues.

I think there is way too much to cover in person-to-person training. Jump over to YouTube and search on "Second Life" tutorial photography. Get the basics down then watch for an image here that impresses you or raises your curiosity. Then ask them how they did it.

You should probably consider how you want to do your images. I mean from the viewer only or get into post-production enhancement... meaning Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.net.

There are somethings you can only do in post-production. For instance... a transparent me as a ghosty type.

    The butterflies are't afraid

But, knowing how to use the viewer and which viewer to use will give you great images too. I like this one, which was mostly made with Windlight and I think Firestorm viewer. Memory 😕

Thank you so much for the advice @Nalates Urriah! YT has been pretty useful so far, but I'm not very good at taking pics (when I had an IG irl my pics were usually just ok); so was looking for photographers for hire. Also wanted to include some post-production processing as well and I'm not that advanced yet, so hiring someone else is the least stressful way to get the results I want until able to do it myself. Your recommendation to check out other's photos is a great starting point, that'll be a great way to determine what aesthetic I'm aiming for.

You take pretty cool photos yourself! 🙂

  7. Hey there,

As the title indicated I'm a gay POC (person of color) looking to make friends. It's been about 3 weeks since I joined (talk about a learning cuuuuurve). I heard clubs were the best place to meet people, though it hasn't been very fruitful (hardly any public chatter, anywhere from 10-60 minutes for IM replies, or just being  outright ignored). Following some advice I received from a very helpful (het female) friend I'm trying here.

I'm 32, live in New York, former veteran that transitioned back into fashion. I really love music, enjoy shopping, reading, cooking, traveling, having a good conversation with friends, and recently started learning to play the keyboard. Small talk isn't really my forte (there's so much more meaningful things to talk about than the weather), so if you're interested in having good conversations hit me up.

So far I've mostly shopped, gone clubbing, and explored a little...oh and museums!! Art, particularly art history, is pretty big for me (almost did a minor in art history).

If any of that sounds interesting to you or you know of any hang out spots for other gay or lgbt persons of color (or MIXED crowd), send me message: melanatedaquarian

p.s. I've seen a similar thread from a year or two ago in which it turned into a race debate...please refrain from that. I can literally count on one hand the number of gay POCs I've seen at clubs and as a gay black male I can tell you it's nice to be around those that look like you, share similar experiences, are actually interested in being friends, etc. I personally have zero race hangups, but imagine if you will a kid in a candy store...only you're the candy, but not just any candy...you're licorice...that's basically what it feels like.

  8. hi everyone!

I'm still pretty new to SL, about 3 weeks now. I"m 32, a veteran, and formerly studied and worked in fashion. I'm also gay and black irl. So far it's been fun exploring bits of SL - especially museums! People compliments my avi fairly frequently, so maybe I'll start up a fashion blog once I get a better handle on things and build a portfolio of brands I like to wear.

IRL I enjoy reading, cooking, hanging out with my friends (back when that was a thing). I love LOVE music and recently started learning to play the keyboard. I also speak French fairly decently, so always up to chat in French. Spanish and Italian speakers will have to be a bit more patient as it's. been years since I've used either regularly. I'm in New York if anyone is from the area and wants to commiserate our current condition.

I'm one of the coronavirus joiners lol, though SL came onto my radar last year sometime. Mostly my time is spent shopping, but it's getting a bit lonely and trying to meet people in gay clubs has been fruitless. It seems a lot of people are on the forums, so figured I'd try here.

  9. Just sending a follow up thank you to everyone that helped me get a handle on setting up my avatar. In the end I went with a legacy body, Catwa Victor head, Blake stray dog skin with matching body applier (though a Birth face and skin were very strong contenders). I'm pretty proud of the end result considering the hours (yes hours) spent to figure it all out. Now comes the fun part: shopping!

Also, if anyone knows of good photographers that could take some nice photos for Flickr I'd be very grateful for the help. 🙂
