  1. Did you fully remove all drivers left over from the 1030 before installing the drivers for the RX 550? Some older applications will try and use parts of an old driver even if the hardware isn’t there. Though most often that would lead to things just not loading graphically rather than stuttering. I ran SL on a 560 with no issues, the 550 is far from high end but it should handle SL without issue.
  2. Not Safe for work vs safe for work. A nude avatar with genitals vs a nude avatar with nothing to see but a skin texture.
  3. It’s just a regular desktop right? if you have an i5 6500 that means you’re using 2400mhz ddr4, just pick up a new 2x8gb kit of 2400mhz ddr4 basically this kit From crucial is the most plain Jane stuff out there, but anything else the same spec works just as well if you want lights or a different heat spreader style or whatever ram is the easiest of things to swap out, it’s keyed, it only fits in one way, pop the little tabs on the slot to let the old sticks out, push the new ones in until the little tabs lock it in place bios handles the change automatically
  4. So today I was playing around with other variants of my primary avatar and wanted to use the SL body, mesh addition version. Put everything on and realized that the avatar is nsfw by default. No worries, I have pants. My pants do not have an alpha and I have 12 L$, so I had mostly broken pants showing my thighs. So I was going to make an alpha, and had no idea how to do that. But i figured whatever, I’m a furry, I don’t need pants, I’ll just use the SFW avatar version and go bottomless. Well, to make the avatar SFW I needed to move a texture from the avatars accessories folder to change the skin texture I was using. And I have no idea how to do that. And it was this moment of realization that “oh my god I am a complete brainlet” and can’t figure out these simple things without a guide. 30 minutes later and yeah, I have a sfw avatar and a custom shorts alpha, but aaaaaaaaaa Feels like my IQ hit room temperature, and it’s October so that’s pretty low. But this got me thinking on a point of discussion. How competent are you with the slightly more finicky parts of SL? Do you know how to do stuff beyond adding things to your avatar and running through the world? I once met someone who hadn’t figured out the “add” feature and was just certain they would never have hands and couldn’t wear anything other than shirt + pants + shoes. Dude found hair he liked and decided it was worth not having eyes. Telling him how to “add” things to the same body slot blew his mind.
  5. Ancient software + bloated user created content + inefficient resource utilization = god awful framerates on high end hardware.
  6. I’m an internet sexual deviant and SL is a good home for internet sexual deviants. Also a small circle of friends who hate discord and use SL as a super resource intensive chatroom.
  7. I like all the “generic compressed sugar bricks” stuff like Smarties, Spree, Sweet Tarts, etc Even now in my 20’s my kid brain likes to crush up smarties and snort them.
  8. I just like cheese. i sometimes go as a moniker of “generic girl name #1047” but when I’m on a male avatar I sometimes use my real name (Genwyn) which is an issue because there’s a semi popular oldschool furry named Genwyn who is primarily a red panda so I can’t mix Male + Red Panda + Genwyn and it’s really god damn annoying edit: also oh my god, if someone mentions jay naylor im going to set them on fire i do not like the Genwyn, in a world of coincidence my relatively rare (in the us anyway) name HAD to be affiliated with a furry who’s character is in porn
  9. I would suggest checking out the linustechtips forum for suggestions on building a modern PC within a budget. They have a section for new builds and planning where you can get help from other users on a build within a set budget. For a prebuilt, basically anything with a modern Intel i5 or i7, 8-16gb of ram and a Nvidia GTX 1050ti or higher (1060/1660/1070/2060/2070 etc) On the AMD side, a Ryzen 5 series. 7 series is basically the same but with more cores and SL doesn’t utilize a lot of cores that well. For GPUs you’d want an RX 570/580/590 or Radeon 5700. Look for something with an SSD as its very beneficial for a cache heavy game like SL. Ideally an NVME m.2 SSD over a Sata SSD. Acer and Dell have more consumer oriented lines of prebuilts that will come with the lower end of that spectrum of hardware, and gaming lines that will come with the higher end stuff. For building your own you’re basically looking at the same thing specs wise but then you need to take into account buying your own pieces, and there’s more to a PC than just it’s cpu and gpu to consider when picking parts. I suggest this: Ryzen 5 2600 Any B450 chipset AM4 micro atx motherboard. 2x4 or 2x8gb sticks of 3000/3200/3600mhz DDR4. Any micro atx case you personally like, on the high end I suggest Fractal Design cases, very well build and very quiet, on the low end you can get a Rosewill FBM01 for like 25$. There’s a lot of sub 30$ rosewill cases, I’ve used almost all of them in the past, the FBM01 is the most solid built of the lot. They all look very plain and non showoff-ish. For the power supply you need to pick a gpu first and know what power it will draw, as it’s the most power heavy component. Pcie power only cards (75w or less with no extra power connectors) don’t need much. RX 570’s are some of the best overall price to performance video cards right now.
  10. Isn’t this how that lularoe pyramid scheme thing irl got people to sell clothes? There was a desirable piece of clothing in an outfit and you had to buy the entire outfit. Its a really scummy business tactic.
  11. It should be playable, either a GT 650m or HD 4000, both would handle SL without too much issue. The cpu being an i7 3770S, while not amazing in 2019, is still a good processor for single core performance which SL prefers. The game might be using HD 4000 instead of the GT 650m, OP might want to look into that in the viewer “about” information window to be sure. But it’s also probably just time for a full cleanup and general PC tune up. Completely uninstall the viewer, clear the cache out first, then reinstall. Along with just generally going through the machine to make sure it’s running as it should without any weird background processes or anything eating up resources. Being that it’s from 2012 and it’s an iMac, it is 100% time to either take it apart for maintenance or bring it someone who can if you don’t feel comfortable taking it apart yourself. 6-8 years is about the lifespan of most metallic based thermal compound and along with just getting any dust out of the system, replacing thermal compound on that machine for the cpu and gpu is a must for the sake of safe thermals. Most PC repair places do it pretty cheap but those 2012 models aren’t the most difficult to service yourself if you follow an ifixit guide or something. edit: also to note on just running an old machine like this, having your drive cloned to a modern SSD and swapping it out for the relatively slow 5400rpm hard drive will drastically increase performance on that hardware, especially for a cache heavy game like SecondLife.
  12. You want anti aliasing turned on. It’s in the graphical settings. Note that higher AA exponentially increases the load on the GPU. Start with 2x and restart, then 4x and restart, so on and so forth until you reach a level where things look smooth and you have decent framerate. Sometimes AA in SL won’t work without basic shaders or ALM on, no idea why, sometimes it works without either, sometimes It wants both. Changing ALM on and off usually fixes it to result in AA working with ALM on or off.
  13. I think if I saw a furry pride event scheduled I would make sure to mail my laptop to another dimension for that span of time just to make sure I could avoid it
  14. If there’s hatred for furries I’ve sure never seen it. Quite the contrary, my PMs are a lot of less than desirable half assed flirting and straight up requests for bunny booty however there are definitely a lot of furries who leave a bad impression on very public places mainly for newcomers, just because not wearing any clothes with a furry avatar is permitted doesn’t mean you can wave your junk around seriously, SI5, you know who you are, at the very least set it to flaccid or something, getting clotheslined by a dong is not what the average noob is looking for out of social islands EDIT: I gotta add onto this while I’m thinking about it, because it was a topic of discussion i was involved in inworld recently. The whole furries don’t have to wear clothes thing. That’s been a topic of debate for a long time, generally speaking the more “oldschool” furries and avatar designs are from an era where it was normal within the culture. Furry characters didn’t wear pants or clothes at all. Fur is clothing enough. And many, if not most places accepting of furries are fine with that. ...but within reason If you’re running the old prim avatars with distinctly anthropomorphic features, it’s not anything that’s gonna turn heads. But more human like avatars, for reference, Kemono based bodies or modern dark spot designs avatars, you’re substantially more humanoid. That’s when instead of passing off that glancing interpretation of your avatar as “just a furry avatar”, you are now a naked furry. Your avatar looks like it was designed for clothes. With that being said, that doesn’t mean you have to wear clothes with a humanoid avatar. It’s a bit weird sometimes seeing naked kemono avatars, primarily because there’s such a cool catalogue of clothing specifically for them, but if the place you’re in is OK with that then commit to the style you prefer. But, if the owner or staff of a location tell you to put clothes on, put clothes on. Don’t get all defensive with “oh but I’m wearing a furry avatar so I don’t have to wear clothes”. Just put the clothes on and shut up. You can get away with a lot of other things, I’m usually wearing a kemono body on a DSD avatar, I look really out of place naked and tend to wear at minimum a shirt and ideally a skirt of some kind. I’ve never had anyone in a position of power demand I put on underwear, but if asked I would (none of my underwear works well with a slightly modded kemono body so I just tend to omit it) Because that’s an issue I’ve seen several times. “But my avatar is XYZ style, I don’t have to wear clothes in A, B or C places!” It’s at the discrepancy of the land owner. It can also in certain places really quickly draw unwanted attention in many forms, know the social context of the place you are and dress appropriately. Wether that’s wearing a full outfit, going bottomless, just accessories or nothing at all.
  15. They weren't the first. Lucasarts put out Habitat for the C64 in 1987. The first real multiplayer virtual world game. Complete with custom avatars, places to go, and chat with other people. We should inspire lucasarts, or whoever owns them now, EA and Disney I think, to sue Worlds Inc for theft of their original concept.
  16. You can try something like Revo uninstaller that lets you uninstall a program, then it hunts around for anything related to the program remaining anywhere on the system. Looking for registry lines individually is a nightmare. You can also try a normal uninstall and then using a program like piriforms ccleaner which has a built in registry error tool that can find registry entries that have no program affiliation. That might not get everything but it'll usually find a lot of stuff.
  17. Your gpu likely wouldn't be handling any of the scripting. The GPU use in SL is primarily texture and geometry related. Even lighting is mostly CPU bound. If you are experiencing actual overheating you have a hardware issue you need to take care of. Your components are designed to and should be capable of running at 100% usage without thermal throttling or causing faults due to heat. This could be as simple as a dusting or a bit more in depth.
  18. I think they stopped because they realized there's no way they could make it not look like a dong.
  19. As someone who's been many places and seen many things, there is nothing in SL that truly compares to the real deal. You cannot simulate walking on the glass bridge at the Grand Canyon, watching the sun rise over the forests and fields around OKC, or chainsmoking due to the intense stressful feelings of driving through dense LA traffic on 12 miles of downhill in a vehicle large enough to take out a city bus. Im looking at you, Hesperia on I-15, I hate you but love that the experience is so unique.
  20. You can tell the likely age of most posters so far based on the memes they post.
  21. Bit of backstory, im currently playing around with modifying viewers to see if i can get a modern version of SL running on an obsolete operating system, namely Vista pre SP2 and Windows XP. So far the best ive gotten is getting into the world once on Vista with no service packs and then crashing hard. XP is not going as well. With that context out of the way, currently im just making sure that Vista SP2 even can play SL. And with that im just using one of my Thinkpad Z61t's because i can use identical hardware to run SP2 vs no service packs. The issue im encountering is that the fonts are all sorts of generally messed up and parts of the UI are missing. I have no idea why, this is the current version of SL 32 bit downloaded from the main SL website, its installed on a non modified version of Windows Vista SP2 32 bit and though the specs are atrocious, theyre supported and functional. I dont really care about the actual performance as long as it starts and gets me into a world. But the UI problems are something ive never seen before. Does anyone else experience any issues like this? Menu backdrops are missing, some features like the FPS graph are missing, parts of the chat box are missing, etc... Its not an issue at a hardware level, as running on Linux (specifically debian 10.1 stable 32 bit with gnustep) presented no issues with the UI. And the modded client that worked, albeit briefly, on no service packs vista didnt show this issue either. So i can only think its something to do with the current version of SL or something didnt install right, i tried a full reinstall and that gave me no change. Any information or help would be appreciated.
  22. I had a few friends that would do this ages ago and basically use SL to make a story mockup. They later started using roblox since it's the same thing just way quicker to work in. Then they had an actual artist join the group who would do effectively courtroom sketches of everything on the fly.
  23. testing out some modifications to the obsolete platforms viewer think i may have gotten semi modern SL versions to somewhat work on Vista with no service packs, but it wont start on XP. obsolete platforms viewer now requires you to install the most up to date version, restarts, then tells you that you need vista sp2, but i may have figured out a way around all that mess, problem is that the one time i got into the world everything was a disaster zone of graphical issues, granted intel 945gm is technically the minimum SL will even start on ill slap together the Pentium D and agp x1650 pro based system later and install vista on it with no service packs and see if i can get it any further. this thinkpad wont make it past the login screen anymore
  24. Which drivers are you running? Have you updated them and are you using proprietary or the open source nouveau drivers? I always had mountains of suttering issues with some of the proprietary driver versions in SL, specifically with a 3gb 1060 on xubuntu 16.04. Ironically moving to Windowmaker/gnustep instead reduced it, but moving to open source drivers entirely eliminated the stuttering though now at overall lower framerates. I would suggest trying a few different older driver versions, or updating if you havent, and maybe try the open source ones as well. Make sure to purge each set of drivers as you try them and be prepared for redundancy, theres a chance in purging a driver if you dont get the install right youre just gonna get a grub menu with no video driver for the OS.
