  1. Update:

I bought an avatar just to have the option. Even before I bought it I had no plans on getting a bunch of clothes, not because monetary reasons just because the idea didn't appeal to me as much as getting furniture. And now? OH BOY I DEFINITELY DON'T PLAN ON GETTING A LOT OF CLOTHES! I'm having a hard time with this avatar and am a bit overwhelmed. I've been watching different tutorials for about three hours now trying to figure out all these huds and learning about Omega which I always heard of but had no idea it was this useful. It's a slow coming process but I hope to have her looking okay and in her one outfit she's allowed per year as soon as I make this face not look like the Joker.

The struggle of being me, I swear.

I lost my Daddy it will be 3 years in November.  And I can be alright for days at a time, and then something like a song, or even a meal can remind me of him & I'm off bawling.  I don't want him to have the heartache and regrets with me that I had with my parents.  I sure do a good job of being my parents tho sometimes.  :(

& Pink, I am very sorry for the loss of your mom.  *hugs*

Exactly. You summed it up perfectly. There will be days, weeks even when life is good and then out of nowhere you'll feel like your lost and your suffocating. :( I'm sorry for your loss of your dad, and thank you in return. *hugs* Stay strong.

/end sadness before I cry again

Whether my son will be okay once I am gone.

Having lost my mom less than a year ago: no he won't. But he'll survive. I don't know if you lost your parents or not, so I might be preaching to the choir, but a death of a parent is something you never recover from, you just keep going.

    Hi Pink!

I love shopping too, and I have a ton of clothes.  But as several people have pointed out, you don't have to go that route to have a great Second Life!

One of the brightest and most successful avatars I know is Desmond Shang.  He is the estate owner of Caledon, a steampunk community of over 25 regions.  He's still the same dorky, bow-tied avatar that he was when I first met him 12 years ago.

And you should not assume that to be a "normal" SL avatar you have to spend a lot of money on a mesh body and head.  Yes, a lot of people do.  But also, a lot of people don't!  You can still look really nice with a "classic" non-mesh avatar.  And that doesn't even begin to touch on the wide variety of people who don't use human avatars at all.

There is no "normal"...so, forget about that and be yourself instead!

Great point! I'm actually feeling a lot better about sticking out like a sore thumb in some of the sims I visit. No need to fake it to make it right? I'm happy the way I am and hopefully I'll make some friends along the way. I guess I feel comfortable in my "second skin" once more!

  5. A 100% serious post from me. No silliness or humorous threats to beat up badgers.

I've ran into (once literally) three small family units on SL at different times. Maybe a couple of years ago I would have laughed and considered it strange that strangers decided to play family on a video game. But now I'm wiser, I know games like Second Life are what you make of them and you can do virtually anything. And real-life kind of sobered me but that's neither here nor there.

What I'm trying to get to is that I felt jealous every time I saw a family interacting and having a good time. It was like a real family and my heart which is a lot softer than people give it credit for, couldn't take the adorableness of it all.

So...how do people become families? Is it all left up to happenstance. Do they put up ads? I've been pretty isolated thus far on Second Life and though I would love friends I feel like trying to find a good family that I gel with is where my heart is taking me but I'm insure of how to even go about everything.

(please forgive my early morning sappiness I caught a case of the feels. I'll probably regret posting this after a nap)

Below is a pic of me pondering if I just should adopt a bunch of those little animated cats and fill up my skybox with them.

I have an inventory full of clothes and I still pretty much only wear two outfits; one casual and one formal.

And don't forget there are tons of freebies available; much more for women than for men. Free Dove has some quality freebies for Maitreya, so does Ajuda Brasil. And that's not counting all the hunts and lucky chairs and group gifts you can pick up.

Just one thing though. The best house is...

    Good point!

  7. Update: I appreciate everyone's input and those who gave me links especially. I may use them, but at this time I plan on making a a proper human avatar only so I can get me some Ravenclaw outfits because I've always adored Harry Potter and since there's no new games of HP (that are worthwhile) I might as well use SL's imaginative creators to my advantage! (Also, Ravenclaw is best house. Fight me)

Madelaine McMasters made me realize something. Something that I already knew but needed a reminder of. It's my Second Life. If people can accept me for the way I choose to play then me duding myself up just for them so they will tolerate me isn't the hallmark of a good friendship.

Pink, if you've found that wearing the same outfit, day after day, exposes the shallow people in your life, why on earth would you want to change clothing?

Think of your limited wardrobe as a UV flashlight, exposing the cat pee on the carpets in the lovely house you're touring, so you can avoid buying it.

I think this might be the best advice I've received in a long time actually.

The female avatar I'm using right now has been using one outfit for the past few years. She has other clothes but for just wandering around and shopping I use the same outfit with small accessory changes here and there. It's never been criticized and gets occasional compliments. I don't think people are that judgmental in SL. Just make a casual outfit that is appropriate to wear anywhere and you're set.

You could get a fat-pack version for each clothing item which greatly expands the color and textures of a single outfit. For accessories like jewelry you can pick up free items here and there as you wander around. You can also grab gifts on the SL Marketplace and at many shopping events. The Uber event right now has massive free gifts which are mostly accessories.

The casual outfit is a good idea. Also it's good to hear you don't think everyone is shallow. Maybe I've just ran into bad eggs.

PinkPatrol, if you have a female avatar you barely need to spend any money on clothes if you don't want to. There's a plethora of high quality female freebies out there, if you know where to look. You can kit out a female avatar with a massive wardrobe, completely free.

I don't know where to look! Care to share your secrets, Skell 🤩

I had one outfit for about three months when I started.

The trouble is I love shopping, so I just accumulate outfits. It's a big part of my SL.

I can get that. I'm that way with furniture. The only thing is not everyone you meet in world sees your home to judge you, but how your avatar looks can make people judge you pretty harshly. I already get judged for my current avatar which I'm 100% not retiring, it's just I'd hate to invest in a 'normal' avatar only to have the same thing happen again because I show up to the same place with the same clothes all the time lol I'm at least making a small attempt to fit in sometimes

I learned pretty quickly many, many people on this game are shallow over pixels.
