Left column is basically "The code will execute on it."

Except when it won't. Like on the Radeon 9500. Or when it won't run right, like on the GeForce 6600. I dunno about the Intel GMA950 and I don't wanna find out.

Right column "Might not timeout when somebody plays a gesture."

SL can still run pretty well on the better recommended hardware, with the right settings. Not just jamming everything to low, either. I wouldn't recommend any of it now but it can work okay.

  2. It's been a year since the M1 Macs were released and there's still no sign of a universal binary viewer. When the Intel Macs were released in January '06 there was a viewer in March. At this point I think when something major breaks, that's the end of Mac support for SL.

Is there a client that works on the M1 Macs?  They changed the basic architecture to arm or something didn't they?  Doesn't that break a lot of older software?

No, what broke a lot of stuff was macOS Catalina a year earlier when Apple finally cut off support for 32-bit applications. The platform switch to ARM didn't break much at all, and software runs better than it did on comparable Intel Macs.

What apple silicon viewer? We still don't have a viewer that doesn't depend on opengl.

Seems like compiling for Apple Silicon would be a lot easier. I'm assuming LL is able to spring for an M1 Mini.

I logged in and performed a quick test. I use the Linux version with RLV. I don't know of any specific setting. It just works. Are you sure you're using an invisiprim? They show as green when viewed using CTRL+ALT+T (or Mac equivalent).

Kinda sure. I went to http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nautilus - Shalim/253/201/23 to check it out and the invisiprims in the drydock acted exactly the same in Kokua (non-RLV) and Firestorm.

    1. Kokua still renders invisiprims in advanced lighting mode, which is good for owners of some yachts where the water would otherwise appear inside the hull. Firestorm only renders invisiprims when advanced lighting is off, which isn't quite as nice to look at, assuming one has a good enough computer to handle shadows and reflective water, and one doesn't want to sail a waterlogged boat.

Is there a setting for this? It doesn't look like invisiprims are being rendered with ALM on in the Mac version.

Second Life viewers (including Firestorm) use OpenGL. Microsoft (who makes windows) and AMD (who make Radeon) treat OpenGL as a second class citizen it seems. Last time I tried to use the Radeon Adrenaline software on Windows to record it would not even allow me to record a game if it used OpenGL instead of DirectX or Vulkan.

FWIW, AMD ReLive will record OpenGL games in a window, but not full screen. Sub-optimal.

My concern when I started this topic is to help the average user ( my self included ) to enjoy playing and not abandon SL, sorry if some people here have an almost religious frenzy for some TPV viewers.

Not having the same experience as you is not a religious frenzy. I've found Firestorm to be reliable and perform as well as or better than the Linden viewer. Including in extremely crowded venues. I'm happy to give other viewers a spin. So far I haven't found any compelling reasons to switch from FS as my daily driver viewer.

The one thing I see much better on my PC than yours that may be making a difference is the memory. I have more than 8GB in the PCs I run SL on, which may explain why our respective experiences in crowded places are very different.

With all the people bringing up the other (better) option of Linux, and the concern of voice chat issues I thought I'd add to this thread by posting instructions on how to get both voice and notifications to work for Firestorm on different distributions. These instructions are also in the pics section on my profile if anyone needs. The instructions are for using the native Linux version for SLvoice, not the WINE one. Here goes:

Can you put that on Hollerith cards for me?
