Heh.  I love my smart home features.  But your relative was probably smart to move on, and not only because of the idiotic put-down.  Any home that can be controlled from your phone can also be controlled by the Government, Google, Amazon, and terrorists.  Plus probably the rugrats who egged my cars last Halloween.

  2. I don't see anything to indicate that computer has dual graphics, and even if it did, the AMD APU is capable of running SL (they all are). It sounds like a driver issue. Something has likely changed on your Windows and broken the video driver. Download a new copy from AMD and install it. There are two drivers, the Catalyst and Crimson Beta, I would suggest sticking with the Catalyst driver.

As an aside, at least with nVidia cards, they don't care what your monitor is plugged into, SL will be rendered on the nVidia card and routed to your monitor even if it's connected to a motherboard with an IGP that can't run SL. I don't remember if I've tried this stupid PC trick with AMD or not.

  3. First of all, go to the graphics settings in Firestorm and make some changes:

In the general tab, make sure basic and atmospheric shaders are on, then check hardware skinning. Turn the max particle count down as far as is tolerable, 0 would be best, but no more than 512 if they want to see particle effects. Water reflections should be minimal.

In the Hardware Settings tab, uncheck anisotropic filtering, check enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects, streamed VBOs and enable lossy texture compression. Set antialiasing to 2x. Viewer texture memory should be able to go higher than the 224MB it's set at, run it up as high as it will go. That should be at least 512 on a GT 730.

2GB of memory isn't much, and upgrading that is pretty cheap and easy. That PC should have at least 4GB of memory. I'd also look at replacing the hard drive with an SSD, that makes a world of difference on old computers.

  4. China and South Korea’s containment methods seem to have worked pretty well compared to, well, everyone else. But it’s too late for anyone else to follow their lead. That’s closing the barn door after all the cows are gone and the barn is on fire. Herd immunity? Even if the 15% number is accurate, that’s a lot closer to the percentage of the population that’s going to die from COVID-19 than what it takes for herd immunity. We need more like 90% for that.

My peeve is talk of some “second wave”, as if we’ve seen the end of the first wave. This crap about opening the country back up is like if during World War 2 we had just declared victory after the Coral Sea and brought everyone home.

This is probably really cool, except I have no clue what "Adult Swim" means. From the blog post and the comments I'm assuming it's a TV show. If that's the case, it reminds me of the CSI tie-in from a few years back.

It’s Cartoon Network’s late night programming aimed at adults.

  6. I really need that 60fps to give me the edge in Skippo.

I'll admit to looking at the frame rate a lot, but mostly to see how the latest video card I bought for a dollar runs it. When I'm just using it, not so much. FPS isn't a very useful SL performance metric. Sure, animations can look better at 60fps than 20, but generally 20 is adequate for an entertaining time. For me, long load times, texture thrashing and rubberbanding are all a lot worse than a middling frame rate.
