There are 27867 distinct regions in SL.  Some public, some private, some a mixture of both.  People who have public regions are the ones responsible for making their region searchable and using language that describes their region for people searching.  LL can't be responsible for populating a list of any of this.  They've given us the tools so we need to use them.  I can't even think of a way LL could make it better.  Regions/groups/people come and go in the blink of an eye so any list would have to be updated daily.  LL can barely deal with what they already have on their plate.  Hand holding people to help them "find what interests them" is never going to work.  The new community thingamajig is their current attempt.

Maybe "more details for 'place' search listings", and "better 'place' search"?

For example:  Let's say I want to list a place that is "friendly to furries", and "voice friendly", "has scheduled activities", "is new-user friendly", and "does not require PIOF".  Not all those things are "searchable", right?  (I left out "ratings" because that is a "basic" search criteria.)  At the least, it would be nice to know if someplace does not require "PIOF".

You both make good points I didn't think of. I guess what I'm really trying to think of is some better way to categorize things maybe? I'm not sure. I haven't really figured out a great way to implement such a search as I had described above given all the places in SL, I just know it isn't always easy to find the type of community in SL your looking for. Probably for a variety of reasons [still have not found a really nice rustic like, English or cottage style public garden to hang out in, yet I feel this must exist somewhere].

  2. It's hard to predict what someone will want by the time their old enough to be in SL, but some things I think would help, not just with this, but in General include;

    1. Something that explains the UI on character creation, I assume this doesn't exist and someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But a simple tutorial describing the main features of how the UI works and things like how to move, how to make an outfit, etc. While I'm in the SL is not a game camp, with the complicated UI SL has, it could learn a lot from gaming tutorials in this regard. It should be with the character creation, mandatory [not the biggest fan of forced tutorials by any means, but to many do not pay attention otherwise and then they wonder how to make a basic outfit or the like], and cover the basics, long enough to orient the user with controls/basic features, but not so long it gets tedious. I realize not an easy balance to strike maybe at first, but could be adjusted as needed.

    2. Immersion, just because SL is not a game, doesn't mean SL couldn't lean into some of the aspects, something that probably will appeal at least in part to Gen A. I'm not even talking graphics or anything like that [though with some that might make a difference too]. But like, I've seen some amazing haunted houses, Christmas displays, escape rooms, tours, etc. A lot of that is user generated, but LL could do more of this too, this could actually attract a lot of people who don't know what to do.

    3. Access to what is out there. Whatever someone's interest does little good if no one can find it. There has been effort to try and help with this, but not enough in my opinion, we need a better way to search for different activities of varying interests, and one that doesn't "pick and choose" what gets added like the Destination Guide feels like it does.

4 [maybe?]. Platform options, SL is already working on this. I would not be surprised if more from Gen A gravitated more to mobile. Though this one I'm less sure on, because I somewhat think regardless of generation, I'm beginning to think most people in general when it comes to something like this, care less then you think about a mobile platform. Think about it, who really wants to try and dress their avatar, adjust that little hat in place, or try to move in a crowded space on a tiny mobile device over a big screen? I think that's large in part why we don't see VR everywhere yet, who want to try and do that in VR? [Don't even get me started on motion sickness]. Most YouTubers that this Gen would be watching aren't playing mobile games, that have gaming desktops, and if one of them ever did decide to take on SL [I doubt it, just do to the reputation for some content creators], I'm fairy sure they would be on a desktop. Which could make a huge difference as to the platform they would choose for SL.

If I think of anything else later I'll try to add it, but this is what I thought of at the moment.

  3. I have folders designated for every category I can think of [base folders with sub and sub sub, and even sub sub sub categories to sort my stuff], and I store backup boxes in prims at around 500-700 per prim. My biggest fault when trying to coral my inventory is the thought of "what if I find a use for this later?". Sometimes I actually have [never thought I find a use for teapot avi, but load and behold a theme dance provided an opportunity], which doesn't help with the hording problem, lol.

    😳 Wow!

I've experience many kind and generous people in SL. I don't think I've ever had a bad reaction after sending a creator a note about a problem with their product or vendor. Yet, there are still some touchy, bad tempered people in SL. I hope you never run into another one like that merchant.

For another story about the positive effect of polite notecards and patience: I tried to buy the Belleza Jake body for my guy alt a few years ago, but I accidentally hit the Gift option and basically sent it to no one. After a couple unanswered notecards, the owner eventually got back to me with an apology, sent my guy the body, and gave me back half the purchase price (before it was on sale for half price).

Fortunately that is the only experience like that I've had like that on the MP, plus one inworld, so just two, the vast majority of creators I've interacted with have been excellent.

I think it's helpful to remember that most SL creators may not have RL experience in sales, marketing or customer service. Some might not have good people skills or might have emotional issues.

I've seen a couple inworld creators lash out at their customers in their store group in very unprofessional and caustic ways. Both ended up closing their stores.

They may feel frustrated by poor reviews, and rather than taking them as helpful guidance, view criticizing customers as over-entitled or over-critical. There's not much you can do to calm down the creator at this point, but a gently worded note or IM to them before leaving a bad review can usually prevent a bad reaction to a negative review.

Agreed, and in hind sight I probably should have. I usually do, but at the time I didn't realize that the texture in the table being no copy wasn't intended since I'm come across it before intentionally [till I got the IM]. So it didn't really occur to me in the moment that it was something to contact her over. The table it's self was as advertised. But I do agree I should have done so. But I do wish she could have expressed herself in a nicer way instead of screaming at me and calling my own products "the ugliest around", which to be fair, I'm just starting, so I'm well aware I'm no top of the line designer, but the interaction was enough to stop me from shopping at her store again.

    Hi,

So, my partner bought a product via the marketplace that ended up looking nothing like it was portrayed to be. (there was no option for a demo so she took a chance) As it wasn't as advertised she left a negative review. This came after the creator was rude to her inworld when she contacted them about the product.

The negative review was removed (because she said in it the creator was rude) but another review for another product was left. Now the creator is demanding she removes her other negative review or she will report her?

It seems SL is siding with the creator even though my partner is being harassed by the creator. She is on the verge of quitting SL completely because of it all.

What's the point of having the option to review products if negative ones can be removed if the creator feels upset about it? How do you even deal with this?

It's infuriating to say the least.

Most of my MP purchases have been great, but I did run into a creator once who was quite rude, I had left a review [which wasn't even that bad, 3 star if I remember right], stating how the product was nice, but the texture for the table [which was inside the table for some reason] was no copy, and I wasn't even rude here, just stated what I found on receiving said product. She came back a bit later and just chewed me out for not contacting her first since the texture being no copy was a mistake [and I mean like full on insulting me and being flat out rude], I told her I had a right to leave the review I felt fit [ after being completely screamed at, without even one attempt to calmly explain herself or try to be nice, hostile right from the beginning]. Now I would have changed that review to state is was a mistake, even though the way she treated me didn't exactly motivate to, but she didn't even give me a chance to, deleting said product before I could even try to.

So, while most creators I've bought from have been quite pleasant when I've interacted with them, there are some not so nice ones out there. As for threatening to report, I've never had anyone try to threaten me on the MP, but unless the review violated something, I can't imagine getting banned over it.

I do agree that unless something violated something in the ToS [and I don't know what all your partner put in her review to judge one way or the other], negative reviews should not be removed, I have no idea on the legality of it though, and Googling provided mixed messages [which is sad but doesn't surprise me].

Tell that to a forum user, and adult business operator, who had their own estate region, and who lost it all, and got perma banned after an anti-adult-activities griefer attack by a fake child and their "shocked and outraged" AR spamming adult alt.

It took said forum user more than THREE months to get LL to properly investigate, and repeal the ban.

One of the forums most vociferous fake child avatars, used to regularly foam at the mouth about how t was his RIGHT to enter A rated regions, because the ToS didn't say he couldn't, regardless of what the land owners thought.

He also frequently claimed that ALL adult stuff on the A rated region should SSTOP, when he arrived, or preferably be confined to a big black box in one corner, so HE could enjoy the res of the A rated region without that "filthy adult stuff".

EVERY fake child avatar I have EVER had the misfortune to encounter in SL, was a toxic over-entitled little sh*te-bag, heck bent on either closing down other peoples fun, or trying to join in with stuff forbidden to them, by lying through their teeth.

"Disclaimers" in place picks "My avatar is over 18, despite being 4 ft tall, flat chested with a big head and big eyes, and wearing a Shirley Temple dress and talking like a bad fake 5 yr old".

Right so your bad experiences mean everything in that category must be bad, if your encounter this so often, I'd start thinking about what your doing to attract it. With your sunny personality, I can't imagine anyone wanting to get back you.... >.>

How does everyone feel about “family friendly” nude beaches in SL?

I’d be very suspicious if some naked kid walked up to me and tried to engage me in conversation

I don't like those either, I had to put up with a parcel behind my house [that is thank goodness gone now], their activities were out of the way, so if it had just been a nudest colony it would be fine, but then in their charter they had to put "family friendly, kids ok", and I'm just like, nope!

You do know that these child avatars you want to protect are operated by adults right?

Even though such acts are disgusting and despicable, no actual children were harmed.

You are probably upset that Elmo got punched in the head on tv the other day too.

I'm quite aware, that does not mean such a depiction is right, it is still a form of an inappropriate act showing a child, that fact that the child is not a child behind the screen does not change the depiction going on. I shouldn't even have to explain that, and the fact I do is extremely sad.

I don't mind if people choose a child avatars, as long as they don't talk baby talk.
I worked over 35 years with children on a dayly basis, and they never ever talk baby talk when they no longer a baby.
They have a smaller vocabulary, but they really don't do baby talk.

I agree with this, by like age 3-4 ish on average, most children communicate quite well and are fairly easily understood.

Yes, Fake Child Avatars in SL are the problem.

The MINIMUM age to log into SL is 13, but only as part of an official educational program, and they are confined to said program's private estate region, and isolated from the rest of SecondLife.

16 and 17 year olds, are restricted to G-Rated areas only.

Any "child avatar" on an A rated region is either a) a FAKE Child, or b) Lied about their age and subject to an immediate ban.

So, NO, fake child avatars on an A rated regions, griefing the adult activities participants with their unwanted presence are NOT "real children".

Oh LOOK! a gratuitous personal insult, in the form of a fraudulent accusation.

I'm "implying" that ANY child avatar found on an A rated sim should be banned.

You seem to forget that adults will try to engage those avatars too, contrary to your imaginary belief, just because a child avatar is involved does not always mean the child avatar is at fault anymore that the adult is always at fault.

Not wanting child avatars around does not mean someone is a pervert. It just makes them a grouchy old meany.

Agreed, but it's the attitude that somehow these bans on depict such actives should not have occurred that ticks me off. I know someone who was assaulted, I have nieces and nephews that before they were adopted by my relatives were abused in such a way, one by their own father, so this is a hill I will stand my ground on.

Right, cause the children are the problem, and not your perverted attitude. Say that way if it makes you feel better, but remember what you are when you look in the mirror and remember that those "Arrogant Fake Child Anti-Adult-Activities" Happen to real children and that fact that you seem to be implying such things should go on, makes you no better then those low lifes who do such things to children.

Some people keep the lara hud on 24/7, because they use it often enough to adjust elements of their lara such as fingernails, or foot position, or alpha cuts, to need it handy, and are technically clued up enough to know that taking it off and putting it on and taking it off and putting it on, causes MORE lag than just leaving it on.

    Definitions... Definitions are important.

In the UK, the age of consent is 16. perhaps you'd like to ban people from the UK using SL, or stop people travelling here in RL.

We can drink booze at 18 too, instead of 21.

    So have you.

1; They may, but I make all these adjustments before going anywhere, so there's no need to be taking on and off to begin with.

2; This was in relation to the ban on certain "activates" going on including child avatars in said activities, apparently LL only banned them do to being forced and not like like because to show a child in such an act is wrong, at least according to some people apparently, The statement you quoted had nothing to do with age of consent.

3; That fact you think such of me is fine by me, because you have as well with your body shaming troll attitude. :)

It's true though that Linden Lab doesn't ban things unless it's legally or financially expedient for them to do so. If there hadn't been a RL concern with child avatars engaging in simulated sex, they probably wouldn't have banned it.

True, but that's kind of sad though, I'm not against people doing their own thing, but I would sincerely hope we can all agree that something like that is something that should never occur anywhere in any form.

IMO - In RL, "collars" are just a "fashion statement".

Agree with this, if it's not actively being used, I'd never think anything of it. I don't really see being an issue for anything.

Fashion chokers are amazing though! 😃

As if it should have to be forced and shouldn't be illegal by default. I'm not one to rehash things usually, but someone says something like that, and I'm going to remember it!

I think any outfit is fine for a G-rated sim as long as there is no nudity. Even a stripper outfit is theoretically alright, as long as genitals/nipples are not exposed. But some people really violate the guidelines in extreme ways. One time I saw a fully naked man on all fours with a pig mask on in a G-rated hair store, bothering others with inappropriate IMs... people who do that should face consequences in my opinion. They know what they're doing. Especially since...

That makes things much worse. I wouldn't care if he were doing that in an Adult sim, but that type of thing simply should not happen in General areas.

And yes, I've seen some of this as well:

I wonder if people ever read the guidelines. My guess is that most don't (which is understandable), and only care or find out about them once they're punished for a violation that could've been avoided otherwise. However, some people might make a mistake due to not knowing any better, which is why they usually get a warning first, unless the TOS/Guideline violation is very severe.

Yes, exactly! I don't quite understand why some of this is such a hard concept to follow, besides the fact that common sense truly does seem to go out of the window in a lot of cases.

If you wouldn't wear it in front of your 80 year old grandma then probabvly don't wear it to a G-sim. Similarly, I avoid A rated sims like the plague.

Funnily enough, the bigger problem, IMO, is people who treat M sims like adult ones.

I've never had any issue with what I've worn to any sim regardless of rating G included, but then again I don't go around dressing like a stripper, in a G sim which is kind of important since as far as I know underage users can still sign up to SL if their 16 [which is still underage even if not by much] and up.

Agree with based off my experience, and don't even mean like being adult free, since you can do adult things on a M rated sim, but they have to be behind closed doors, but I've seen adult content fully on display in M sims and even once in a shop on a G sim.

Agreed, it just adds lag and is not needed. Maybe it comes from nether owning nor using said parts and having no need or want to do so, but this makes zero sense to me. All it does is let me know who's insecure enough with themselves to "need" those parts 24/7 instead of just when in use.

Oddly this episode was part of the reason I joined SL, back when I first saw the episode I think in 2011 ish in syndication [or first tried to, since back then my laptop was not good enough to run it], the other reason was a former guild mate in an MMO I played who was on SL and described it as a place you could be whatever you wanted even a ball of goo, lol.  As some who is super in to customization, I made an account but at the time [as mentioned above] I was unable to run it. So I don't really count my join time till 2018 on making Violet [when I needed a social outlet and had realized I now had a laptop that could run it, I had lost the password to the first account for some time], since I was unable to spend literally no time in world the first time. That old account is now my male alt.
