I appriciate the pointers everyone is giving. It's much appriciated and I'll make use of them for sure.

So I started today and my first of SL was quite .... lonely Firstly I struggled to underatand what I'm actually supposed to be doing. I went to several desitnations and tried beginning chats and talking to people in the "nearby chat" tab and even IMs. For the most part I was ignored completely flat. Only one person was willing to help me for a few minutes before she had to go meet another friend out of all 7 hours I was online. SL really has a lot of potential and I would like the be part of it. It's not like I'm one of those passive people that wait for someone else to do the talking, I truly tried but my efforts for today at least was in vain. So thats a quick summary of how my first impressions was. I dont know if I'll be logging back in again.
