  5. There's a dessert we have in North Devon. It surpasses all others by miles. I'll try to find a photo. Imagine a short stemmed cut glass trifle dish with a wide top. Into this goes three scoops of home made coffee ice cream, and one scoop of Devon Clotted Cream. Add two sugar biscuit tubes, roasted almonds, and chocolate squiggles on the top. Finally pour a shot of Tia Maria over it. Now that.....is a dessert from heaven
  6. So, where I come from these are bread cakes. A few miles either way they become baps, or cobs. Top Hat
  7. Granted but now you know what people really think I wish everyone was at least as understanding as me
  8. I haven't been around that long, but my list of friends who just vanish is quite long. The first guy I ever hung out with here, and who shared my early stresses vanished after a few months and has been gone over a year. It seems to just be how it is.
  9. I've tried reading books on line. It doesn't work for me. Books are special. Not only in the feel and texture of the covers, but the feel and texture of the pages. Each book has an individual smell, and others have noted that new ink on fresh pages is alluring. Also the way in which books age. The soft yellowing around the edges, the ever so slightly furry edges to the dust jacket, the erosion of the new ink smell into a mellow, musty old book smell. All of this is addictive. I have some books from my childhood. Their new smell is locked inside my head. Their smell now has mellowed, and their pages yellowed, but to open one, releases all those memories of long ago. Not only do I love old book shops, because of all the above, but I frequent the on line old book search websites. I look for books I lost, and love to re-acquire lost treasures for my library. I'm not a novel reader, my childhood was spent buried in encyclopedias, and I still prefer fact and historical reading. This more than anything shaped my life. @Garnet Psaltery Do I qualify??

  11. Oh boy! I don't know my father. He left when I was three, after having an affair with my mothers teenage cousin. I saw him rarely until I was ten, but have only unpleasant memories. He lives a mile away and we are strangers. My grandfather died suddenly when I was seven. My mother had men friends for a long time but I never got on with any of them. This all sounds very dark, and yet........ my growing up made me strong, and independent. The only person I could rely on was me. I had to fix things. I learned skills, often the hard way. It made me a survivor, and so my father, by being who he was had a profound positive effect on who I am. Had he been around, there would have been conflict.
