  1. The short answer, certainly in the case of the UK (I can't speak for other countries that use the system), is that we weren't asked. The long answer would infringe the new forum rules, sorry!.
  2. Not quite. Purchase Tax was only levied at the final point of retail sale. Intermediate sales/purchases through the supply chain only needed a certificate issuing confirming that it was not a final retail sale. VAT, however, is a fun system of everybody, throughout the supply chain, charging/paying tax and then reclaiming it at every point of sale. This results in massive extra accounting requirements for everyone involved, from the forester that grows the trees, to the sawmill that cuts the planks, the designers that make the plans, the software company that makes the on-screen planners....to the factory that makes the shapes, to the ironworks that make the hinges, another that makes the handles, .... the laminates....the DIY store thats sells the cabinets, the fitters that fit it all and, finally, the householder who picks up the retail cost. That's a simple example!
  3. Just to update this situation, Firestorm's latest maintenance update, 6.5.6, now implements MFA on their viewer.
  4. Dear esteamed sooter desired, Love much to send you sed assay. Unfortunate, Head of Security at ISP report you internet connexion kompromixed. 5. Many thanks to @Henri Beauchamp, @Beq Janus and @Ardy Lay for explaining the realities here. Maybe it's time to downgrade this from "a good idea" to "it seemed like a good idea at the time"!
  6. Someone tripped over the lead and pulled the plug out, I reckon!
  7. Same issue. Something bad at LL's end, or widespread internet disruption, is likely the cause
  8. Firestorm, and maybe other viewers too, allow you to specify where the cache goes. If a separate location is specified in Preferences for the second instance of the viewer (assuming you have space for a separate cache), would this be helpful? Maybe someone like @Beq Janus would know for sure, in FS's case.
  9. This question has arisen many times before. My knowledge does not go back far enough to know the full story but, as far as I understand it, LL will never agree to letting their server software go out of their hands for commercial security reasons. That software remains one of Second Life's biggest secrets and LL are understandably determined to keep it that way.
  10. But they read it on Facebook; it must be true!
  11. It is a great shame! The only reason I stayed premium was because Bellisseria offered a rational covenant which prevented these kinds of anti-social activities, and particularly required things to be "kept in theme", with no commercial activity allowed. A friend with a houseboat not that far away asked me to look at a platform she'd hit when coming in to land on her houseboat. I flew up to 1000m and sure enough, next door was a flat platform. I spun through 360° while I was up there and could see at least 6 more items of sky-junk (within an 800m draw), at or around that height. She reported the one next door some time ago. Nothing has happened to it, it is still in place. I am also aware of a report made of a commercial vender on the false beach of a houseboat, and that remains in place. It seems very much that no action is being taken to maintain the Bellisseria standards by LL at all. De-rendering eyesores protects only you. It does nothing to maintain the overall appearance of the area. Risking an upsetting exchange with an offending resident is an avenue I have no desire to go down again. No matter how polite the approach is, I have discovered that far too many people just don't like being told that they are wrong - particularly when their activity smacks strongly of bringing mainland practices to Bellisseria! So, anything that directly affects me gets reported. Anything else that I just happen to spot gets ignored because it's probably not going to get any action from LL anyway and I've got better things to do.
  12. Can two instances of the viewer share the same cache? If so, is that wise or disastrous?
  13. Hi @MystiqueOmega, welcome to the forum. We will need a little more information in order to be able to point you in the right directions to see what might be wrong. Start by going to your viewer's top bar menu, Help -> About [viewername] and copy/paste all of that page to a post here. Once we can see that, we can move forwards from there.
  14. Ok, thanks.... I think I've got the idea now. You would have the master and backup copy of any uploaded object safely stored on your own device at home. A type redelivery system would enable you to re-upload the object, as many times as you might want to, at the simple push of a button (charging the upload fee each time, in the process). Neat idea, but a hell of a lot of work to write and set up, I suspect, just to avoid the Ctrl+U -> [select file] -> Enter process, so I doubt that LL would ever warm to the idea. Afterthought: Does Ctrl+U work in all viewers? If not, a menu item will have to be selected instead .
  15. I'm a little confused here - do you mean paying for and uploading say, an object, from your computer into SL? And, if it goes astray, you're asking for a free second attempt? Or are you asking for unlimited uploads of the same object, having paid once for the first one? Mentions of "re-deliveries" seem to suggest some sort of second go after nothing has gone wrong, as far as the initial delivery was concerned.
  16. I didn't know that, so many thanks! That opens up some neat refinements. 🙂
  17. Another approach here is to parcel off a small area of land and set it to a new (invitation only) group. Then, using a boat that can be set be usable by group only (you will often get the choice of setting owner, group or public), you could temporarily enrol renters into the group, thus giving them the ability to drive the boat served up by a rezzer which has also been set to allow operation by group only. That would be a fully manual operation; you'd need to time them somehow for the duration of the rental. Just like the real thing! Eject them from the group at the end of the time. I'm not at all sure what would happen if they are still under way in the boat when you eject them from the group. This needs a test! The boat would probably need a kill script that was settable timewise as a backstop measure.
  18. It is most likely @LittleMe Jewell's suggestion that your group role does not allow "Ignore landing point". Be aware, hovever, even it it does, you will still get scooped up by the Landing Point on entry, but will be able to TP to saved LMs on the parcel after that.
  19. We are very fortunate to have such a nice variety of viewers to use, and thanks to all the people behind these endeavours. If you don't like a particular one, that's fine, just use a different one that you do like. I'm not sure what benefit there is in slating a particular viewer for being [insert favourite insult here]. Don't be grumpy! We can do better than that, surely.
  20. Hi @blossombomb1, welcome to the forums. Firstly, a quick bit of advice - this request for help has nothing to do with this thread ("Best Viewer for a 3080"), so create a new topic rather than add to an un-related one. Be specific and state exactly which viewer you are using, what does load up ok and at what point do things go wrong. Note that a "failure to log on" is not a crash! Copy any error messages to your post. We'll help if we can!
  21. @Aluviel Nakamura, follow this very useful Firestorm Guide. It will ensure that you deal with all the various bits and pieces that need whitelisting. https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/antivirus_whitelisting
  22. A quick guess tells me that a 2070 ought to do ok on the graphics side, but what cpu is driving it? SL still remains largely single-threaded so the cpu is paramount! And... LL have a "Performance" viewer in Beta, available for download. It's worth a try. Firestorm has a lot of performance improvements, too, but the full benefits can't be added until LL make their Performance viewer code generally available to the Third Party developers.
  23. I've had to resort to relogging, after teleporting into some locations (some, not all by any means), to force things to appear. I'm hopeful of a resolution!
  24. All very strange. @GloriaGlitter - These sort of oddities plague all of us at one time or another, so please keep us updated with how things go!
