This might be a silly question, but do vampires still exist in SL? I don't think I have seen any since coming back.

Oh yes. Not only is my RP home sim full of them (you take one wrong turn on SL and suddenly you accidentally live on a vampire RP sim...) but I make friends randomly at other places and, eventually, they spot I was bitten in 2009 and "lost my soul" on some Bloodlines HUD and they "come out" as a vampire and tell me how they are actually part of some clan or family that is in someway related to the vampire who bit me 9 years ago (I was probably drunk at the time).

So yes... they are definitely still a thing...

  5. Vampires. No biting signs in many public areas are one thing but often this extends to "No *insert brand name* vampires, you will be staked!" I've managed to avoid becoming a vampire despite my home RP sim seemingly morphing into a vampire RP place but hold no ill-will towards vampires and have only rarely encountered rude ones who try to bite random people.

With devices designed solely to locate and ban vampires available (and usually freely given by certain individuals) it really goes without saying that vampires are the most discriminated against avatar.

Oh... except for child avatars. But as I tend to spend much of my Second Life in adult rated regions or at events with no content for child avatars this might just be my perception and there may well be hundreds of sims fully of frolicking kids. However given the reaction I've seen to them and the Facebook chatter about how creepy they are, I suspect child avatars may trump vampires.

As for furries... I've got a few furry avatars though can't say I'm totally "in-group" and spend 99% of my time among humans in human avatars. I do find it weird that I rarely see human and furry avatars mixing. But I've never encountered outright hate.

  6. Want to get a taste for mainland life but don't want to commit to buying? Why not rent a parcel and see how you find it? Any questions contact me in-world.

  8. I started in 2006 as Jae Corinthian. After a year I moved to a new account Jae Villa and my RL partner joined me for a couple of years. I stopped playing in 2009 when my last blog post shows I'd probably only been logging on once a month for about 12 months.

Then 2 months ago I got a new laptop. I started trying to remember what apps I needed to install and suddenly thought about Second Life. I signed in and started to explore my old stomping grounds, finding over half still in existence. I discovered mesh bodies... and then I was hooked again!

  9. I almost find it amusing how naïve the OP on this was. Maybe they live inside a wonderful bubble in RL but, in my experience, there are tons of "mentally unstable" people out here in RL. Go on public transport. Visit a supermarket. Drive a car. The fact so few people seem to spot the fact we are surrounded by nutcases (and are likely nutcases ourselves) just goes to show how inattentive many are. Honestly, I've had to drag my family and friends away from potential fights before because they seemed utterly incapable of spotting trouble signs (I've even left the older male members of my family to be beaten up on one sad occasion as they failed to heed my warnings about a group of people and I had to get my also oblivious partner away from the danger).

So yes, you do also find plenty of folks on Second Life who are intellectually challenged or suffering from a case of "awful personality disorder". But the great thing is that, unlike in RL, you can get away from those people. You can form social groups free of them. You can live in skyboxes and vet who comes in. You can TP away, block their chat, never have to deal with them again. SL is a place where you can live without these folks.
