It would be super, super easy to reply with salient, obvious points as to why it DOES matter in Second Life.

However, both at risk of dragging the thread further off-topic, and needing to let someone FROM THE SECOND LIFE WOMEN'S COMMUNITY STAND UP and respond, I won't reply to your points.

    Thanks for your post!

But you were dragging it off topic, thanks for your post 😀

All "women's issues" are everyone's issues. The lack of grassroots support in Second Life is indeed disappointing. This type of discussion is everyone's opportunity to do something, whether in SL or otherwise.  Every women's issue is an "every day", "everywhere" issue. Everyone reading this thread can choose to "do something" - even in Second Life.

It is unclear why an apparent lack of support would be required, but you really always can do something. Lobby LL. File AR's. Organize campaigns. Boycott companies in SL that create and sell products that demean women. Blog about it. Demand that LL have more than just an "International Women's Day" observance.

Start petitions to change the TOS. Draw attention to the activities in Second Life, getting LL "bad press". Seek allies such as LGBT groups. Only "date" people who support women's issues. Start an in-world group with a land presence and advertising everywhere.

I could easily write many, many paragraphs about everything that could be done. Start a grassroots campaign now, instead of in 6 months, demanding that there be a major observance of International Woman's Day in Second Life, with a focus on Justice and equal treatment for Women.

You can do all of this. It's how things get done.

You do realise, it's a virtual world? Nobody actually really gets "hurt" on there.

Seems like making mountain out of a molehill, you see a place you don't like? Well don't go there.

See something that "triggers" you? Use the block function.

There's far more important stuff going on right now in the real world.

    From the Community Standards Document:

    "Intolerance

Linden Lab encourages social interactions between users across multiple countries. The use of derogatory or demeaning language or images based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion or sexual orientation is prohibited. Actions that marginalize, belittle, or defame users or groups are similarly prohibited."

And frankly, I don't care if you, or even someone in authority at LL, has "decided" that a snuff porn sim, or a group that advocates for the enslavement of women, "abides" by the ToS and Community Standards. These things are appalling.

No they're not.  They're people's life style choices.  Nobody "makes" people join in these activities .

I would suggest the only person who seems to be guilty of intolerance is yourself, daring to judge other people for their lifestyle choices.

ut in nearly 15 years of monitoring this in SL, I have literally never seen an item or group removed, or an account sanctioned, because of misogyny, regardless how hateful, vile, or violent.

Not once. Not ever. LL really doesn't care.

Then it's obviously not a tos violation.

Yeah I've had a few friends leave sl over this, one of them a guy. He said he was just skeeved out. I sometimes question my own support of a company that is so indifferent to it.

Depends if something is or *isn't* a tos violation.

Most times it's someone having a silly tantrum over something silly so they run crying "it's a tos" violation when it's not.

In most cases it's because someone has a different opinion than that other person who can't handle it.

Hmm.. Take the example I gave of the Southeast Asian cultural fest (again not sure what it was offically called). Fun part was reading the histories, comparing food recipies and seeing the SL rendition of it, looking at the different architecture, shopping for traditional inspired clothing, etc. It was fun and engaging.

Women do everything under the sun, so it's hard to make a thematic event celebrating "women" en masse. International Women's day does focus on serious issues and it's important, but it just isn't the same as what I described above.

If it was something like women fashion designers through the ages and influence on SL, I'd be all in, but that's rather more specific. Maybe broken down into mini themes might work, but interest will be niche and more about the topic than women.

Some of the cultural festivals are truly amazing. Whenever I notice one near me in RL I try to get to them.  It's like a trip through time with some of them.

WTF .. I was being verbally abused and scared within an inch of my life for putting a cup down. I was 9.

This idea you have that military service produces better people is garbage, it might work for some in the officer class, but in my experience it's the exact opposite. Domestic violence from military spouses is incredibly common .. because, surprise surprise, they don't care about making better people with rigorous outdoor experiences, they care about making psychopaths who wont think twice. One entire side of my family is a broken disaster spanning 3 generations thanks to the British Army.

I wasn't an officer.  I started out at the bottom and worked my way to sergeant.

Sheer hard work.  Makes a man out of you, or a woman out of you.

It instills that work ethic into you.

You ever had a carer military guy lose his mind over someone not using a coaster, and rage so hard at a child they lost bladder control in the middle of his perfect living room, while everyone else looks the other way. Half my family and their kids are like that. They can all walk miles with full gear.

    I was 9.

Were you having a meltdown at having to do something worthwhile?

Please don't .. one side of my family has a strong military tradition. Generations of easily enraged wife beaters and psychopaths with kids so abused they follow the same path.

    No discrimination.

National service for men and women, equal opportunities for all.

Have you ever been on a 20 mile forced march with full gear? I have.

You'd not have the energy left to whine about pointless matters, and you'd learn to do constructive things with your time.

Seeing all the events and coverage around Pride Week in SL has been really great. I was wondering if SL does anything official for International Women's Day? I'm not always around SL or a regular basis so I may have completely missed anything that happened back in March when it was.

    what about International Men's Day?

    can't discriminate.

It's not a question of explaining concepts, though.   I'm thinking of answering simple questions on the lines of "How do I do this?"

Let's compare some of the menus in the two viewers.    Here's the first one on the left on the Official Viewer, next to the first on on Firestorm.   Different names, and completely different items.

    Second menus

    Third menus

World menu on the Official Viewer

Unless you're using the same viewer as the person to you're trying to explain how to do something, the result is going to be total confusion.

Just proves that Firestorm *IS* what the LL viewer should be.

That would also help the mix USA and rest of the world timezones being covered. (as that's since the pull back from the offices and support lines in the EU still not covered)

    That's another good point raised!!!!!

Are they going to provide support to these mugs, I mean volunteers, during the times that the lab is closed.
