  1. Agreed. I find that it detracts from the whole experience.
  2. I suspect that quite a few males on SL would want to keep their hands free for what they are doing too, but I don't think that it would be driving or gaming.
  3. - accidentally walked off the edge of a sim and disappeared, last seen falling into a seemingly bottomless pit.
  4. Trying on an outfit that I got about 15 years ago......
  5. Well, I found it, and the outfit is called Tulip, as are the jacket, shirt and slacks, but the flower pattern doesn't look much like a tulip unless you use your imagination. Also, the lace pattern at the foot of the legs wasn't as obvious as I recall it being. Nevertheless, I still like it. I probably got it around 2007 or 2008, and I haven't worn it for a decade at least. As with a lot of old outfits on mesh bodies, you need to wear BOM add-on parts unless you want it to look like your nipples are standing to attention. Here it is:
  6. I was just at the local Bunnings a couple of hours ago and the first thing I noticed when I drove into the undercover car park was the smell of sausages. I couldn't help myself. I had a sausage sandwich with fried onion and tomato sauce.......
  7. I threw out most of my old stuff, but I'll have a look through my inventory and see if there is any of it left. When I started in SL, one of my favourite outfits consisted of black slacks and a white top, both decorated with lace and embroidered tulips (well, they were supposed to be embroidered, but they looked like they were painted on). I might still have it........
  8. I'm Scottish too, but I live in Australia, so I'm probably online when you're asleep and you're probably online when I'm asleep.
  9. The ones that annoy me the most are the ones that want to do more than socialise with me. There's no shortage of them.........
  10. It may not help you much in working out where they were geographically though as in most cases there are quite a lot of countries sharing the same time zone. For instance, when it's 9.45am in Chicago, it's also 9.45am in Winnipeg, Bogota, Lima and Kingston, among others.
  11. Rather than an opportunity to find an RL partner, I see SL as a way to temporarily escape from RL. One of the best things about it is that it is a way of talking to people all over the world, not just those who live near you. I would be a bit concerned if SL were to develop in the way suggested. I am married in RL but single in SL and I'm not looking for any sort of RL relationship out of SL at all. I like to keep my SL and my RL separate.
  12. If I get a TP request from someone I either don't know or don't know well, I will first do a quick search to see what sort of place it is. If it's a sex related sim, I'll ignore the request altogether. If it is a private residence I'll politely say no - well, you wouldn't go home with a man you had never seen before in RL, would you? Anything else and I'll probably keep the conversation going for a while and try and judge what sort of person I'm talking to.
  13. I have participated in Second Life since 31 January 2007, although I did take a break for a few years (don’t ask how many, I can’t remember) before coming back at the beginning of 2020 (Covid induced boredom probably). As for how many hours per week I participate in SL, I don’t really know. I might be online four or five nights a week, maybe six, maybe for three hours at a time, sometimes more, sometimes less. Because of my RL time zone, I’m quite often online when things are quiet, and I frequently do RL work on the computer when I’m logged in, periodically checking to see who’s there and what’s happening. How much time have I invested in my avatar? I wouldn’t have a clue. I don’t make my RL identity known. I do give away some details about the real me but not enough to give anyone a chance of identifying me. I suppose it comes down to what I feel comfortable divulging to a total stranger who I may not see again. I don’t see any reason not to tell people that I’m married with two daughters, but I won’t hand out any further family information. And I mention in my SL profile that I live in Australia but was born in Scotland, which is true. If someone asks me too many personal questions (and it’s invariably a male who will do this) I just tell them that I don’t want to answer any more RL questions. They usually are OK with this, although some just go and find someone else to interrogate instead. Generally speaking, I answer any RL questions truthfully, albeit quite often withholding some information. I have to admit though that I have fairly often lied about my age…… What is the worst thing a person can do in SL? Given that you can’t be killed, physically abused or raped in SL (well, the last two are possible if you wear an RLV relay, but I don’t and presumably those who do are OK with this sort of behaviour) it would have to come down to verbal abuse, which can be quite extreme, as some people seem to forget that there is a real person behind each avatar. Fortunately my encounters with such people have been rare.
  14. I just finished watching an episode of Death in Paradise on TV, and now I have the theme tune repeating itself ad nauseum in my head.
  15. I found myself in a group of people chatting away and noticed that one of them had been on SL a few months more than me. It's not often that happens......
  16. I was looking at my avatar's appearance, which hasn't changed much for a long time, and it suddenly struck me that she's almost a lookalike for Julia Gillard, a former Prime Minister of Australia. Both are redheads, wear glasses, have similarly shaped features and even have the same hairstyle. I'm not saying she's absolutely identical (for one thing, my avatar is supposed to be a good bit younger than Ms Gillard), but I found the similarity rather striking. All totally coincidental. I wasn't really planning on replicating anyone's looks other than a few of my own. Has anyone else surprised themselves like this with their avatar's appearance?
  17. Some really good suggestions there. Thank you everyone. I forgot about Maraschino. I actually have a couple of styles from there, but they're a bit shorter than what I wear these days, so I haven't had them on for a couple of years. Worth revisiting though. I can see I have some shopping to do at Nylon Outfitters.........
  18. I have been looking around Market Place and inworld stores for vintage hairstyles, mainly for the 1920s, but also for the 1930s, 40s and 50s. From what I have seen it seems that most of what is available is rather old and, as a consequence, not very convincing in present day SL. Some of the 1940s "Victory Rolls", in particular, look like they're made out of solid plastic, rather than hair. Styles suitable for the 1950s are relatively easier to find, as quite a few modern hairdos, especially those with ponytails, are suitable. Can anyone please suggest where I can find a selection of hairstyles for the 1920s, 30s and 40s? Thank you.
  19. How did I find the thread? In case you hadn’t noticed, there is a search function on this forum. I was searching for information on vintage fashion, sorted it by date, and this thread was the fifth or so result. I saw some things of interest in the thread and decided to add a bit to what had been said. I didn’t realise until too late that the thread was older than I expected. Presumably there is some magic time period after which a thread should not be resurrected, no matter how interesting or relevant it is. Can you please advise what time frame I am looking at, so that I don’t end up getting attacked by self-appointed moderators again? Thank you.
