... but I could have used the ”Reload” avatar function on these deformed avatars... Not a big deal, really.

But you did not - and you should not have to - it was nearly never a  a problem before, but now annoying. So something has changed - either server or viewer handling - or I suspect combination of the two. And it is a big deal, when like hosting event with 70+ avatars, where people come and go all the time - and it is a big deal for majority of users in 2022, who expect things working without such glitches.

And the the problem more clearly, when visiting busy sites in the busy hours of SL. For example around 12 PM GMT+1 (3AM SLT) no problems in general, why I suspect, it is server side and how updates are handled by viewers.

On connection: 100 Mbps fiber, no difference if cabled or using WiFi 6.0.

Went at the same place as Rachel. With the Cool VL Viewer, everything rezzes for me in just one minute (the max bandwidth reached 350 Mbps, CPU utilization at 100% during rezzing). I was at 512m draw distance with all graphics to the max, excepted shadows (off). 50-60fps once everything rezzed. And that's not even accounting for the fact that the screen recorder degrades the rezzing performances: it eats at least a full CPU core among the 8 I got (it's shown in green in the CPU load indicator at the right of the task bar), that could otherwise be used by the viewer while rezzing. I even raised non-impostors from my 24 usual setting to to the max (65), at the end of the video...

There are indeed a few (4-5) avatars that do not show right, but nothing proves it is not because their user did not mess up their outfit...

    Here is the video.

Conclusion: neither the viewer nor the servers are the issue... My guess is that you guys are having network issues. Poor WiFi link, perhaps ?  I'm on FTTH, with an Ethernet link between the ISP's router and my PC.

I see many deform avatars not rezzed during the whole of your video. For example end of video 2:10, the girl getting huged, the girl standing in front of them with, the girl near center of video at the bar.

We are not talking orange/cloud avatars, but avatars not being rezzed completly.

Did you try with another viewer ?...

OK, tested with Linden Lab Viewer v6.6.4.575022 latest release and CoolVLViewer-1.30.0, default settings in both viewers, date 2022-09-18, around 1 PM SLT.

TP into in the busy adult jazz club, standing idle and waiting for avatars around to rezz.

Around 77 ppl in busy adult jazz club,  3:01 minutes for load of avatars, many still deform, still deform after 15 minutes.

Same result as with latest Firestorm release v6.6.3.67470. Only few seconds difference on load time of avatars in the different viewers.

Following the above comments and after a distinctly cloudy evening in SL a thought occurs  to me.  Is this phenomenon restricted to folk using the new Firestorm 6.6.3, or is it more general?

I have found that everyone rezzed eventually and subjectively the situation seemed to improve considerably after midnight my local time (BST).

My use of the default Linden viewer is restricted to occasional testing sessions and all my SL friends use the FS as well so I have no comparative data.  Does anyone reading this use it and can comment?

It also occurred with previous version of Firestorm.

    Entering busy event

I noticed more severe, if 40+ avatars around in busy clubs like a popular adult jazz club, same observations in other busy clubs, typical worse if 40+ avatars.

To reduce the problem I did as follows, set graphic to default, draw distance to 8 meter, when all avatars are rezzed around you at this distance, increase to 16 meters, repeat wait, increase to 32 meters - repeat depending on size of club and then set to your normal preferred graphic setting, in my case high, 128 meters, ALM on.

Some will still appear as deform avatar, but will eventual rezz after several minutes, worst case 25-30 minutes! If you ask the person, who appears deform, to use Refresh Attachments and Rebake Textures, they will appear normal quicker.

Be first or among first at busy event

Assisting in a very popular club with a swimming pool party, where 70-80 avatars are visiting in busy hours, I observed: If i came early - as first or only few staff members around, all visitors rezzed normally as they entered party, also when 40+, 70+, 80+. If you leave, you have the ´problem as described above.

To me, it looks like problems in the viewer code xor server side, where updates not handled correct.

  5. Hi Beq,

Does it default to 60 FPS, if VSynch rate of monitor not recognized? My 2K 165 Hz monitor works correct regarding VSynch with other programs, but Firestorm craps it to 60 FPS, if I use  Preferences->Rendering->Limit Framerate to 120 FPS.

As you, I have two monitors connected, the other one older full HD 120 Hz, which add to the complexity of bug hunt.

Else thanks to you and all the people working on the Firestorm update, it fast, reliable, responsive compared to earlier versions and without the above Limit Framerate, I get crazy wild high FPS at home with high/ultra graphics, ALM on. Other places stable fast FPS in even busy clubs, where earlier versions of Firestorm crawled down to annoying extreme low FPS.

    • 100 millon users = 1.3% of the world's entire population
    • 114 million = 1.4%
    • 120 million = 1.5%
    • 194 million = 2.5%
    • 400 million = 5.2%
    • 500 million = 6.4%
    • 738 million = 9.5%

For some reason I can't really explain I tend to take these numbers with a grain of salt.

According to financesonline there are 2.69 billion video game players in the world. Even with let us say 30% doppelgängers it is a staggering number. Some other sources (DFC, statista) estimate the number to be 3.1 - 3.4 billion. Clearly this can only be estimates.

  7. I find that article hard to take serious, it is like the old academic saying: There are numbers, lies and statistics! [trustworthiness highest on left]

Numbers of users on the different game platforms indicate potential target audience is much higher.

    EA Games: 500 million
    Epic: 194 million
    Steam: 120 million

    Sony Playstation: 114 million
    Micosoft XBox: 100 million
    Nitendo: 100 million

Some numbers from single games where Minecraft has a staggering 738 million users and Microsoft Solitaire (still!) has 400 millions users. In top it is the free games like Battlegrounds, Candy Crush on social platforms topping. While the big games like Grand Theft Auto V, APEX Legends has 100-120 million users.

You laptop is more than good enough to run SL with high graphic quality and 256 meters with excellent FPS. Besides the things suggested, also do maintenance of your computer regularly like every month that is clean caches both viewer cache and the OS caches, run Optimize Drives. Windows 10 only does a trim if SSD, so do not worry about wearing the SSD out.

Be sure to have Firestorm added in NVidea Control Panel. Manage 3D settings->Program Settings. Your GPU 2070 should be selected in OpenGL rendering GPU.

You write pirated platform. But if on Second Life and you own the copyright to the items in question see: Intellectual Property Infringement Notification Policy, to fill a DMCA, use this form: Intellectual Property Complaint Form

If it is outside Second Life, use your local authorities and your state's rules to handle infringement of your Intellectual Property Rights/copyright claims.

Either way be prepared to pay deposits, pay lawyers, so your product must represent a certain value and generate a certain amount of revenue for it to make sense financially, before following those steps .

I'm mostly surprised by what that application does when it is lowered or "in the background" and shouldn't have to render anything..

Yes, Chrome uses a lot of resources even with only with a single tab open on say www.google.com and where you as user do nothing. It is caused by the protecting "sandboxing" of running processes in Chrome. You see this as multiple running processes in the task manager. Inspired by the very efficient Microsoft solution of handling heap in multiple processes, Google implemented it adapted to Chrome with now less memory usage compared to earlier versions of Chrome.

Alternative browsers like Firefox, Edge use less memory, I personally use Firefox and very seldom have any problems running Firestorm and Firefox at same time, even with typical heavy internet usage in Firefox like watching high definition videos on youtube etc., having several web sites open like Flickr, blogs, news and SL Forums.

It is surprising though you experience such major drop in FPS. Could it be a faulty extension in Chrome?

How many of you use the Advanced Lighting Model in your viewer? https://gyazo.com/e4b335dc7a3737f32d50480479804c63

Always - so lucky I can run everything in 2K Ultra graphics and all maxed out except for normally busy night clubs with 40+ ppl . To me SL lighting and shadows important and part of my joy experiencing SL.

avatar locking up. tried all the normal things can't get it to stand up straight.

replaced everything. stripped down to basic avatar still not standing up straight..

Are you not able to stand up after having used "Sit here" in the pie menu? If so, check out: My Stand Button, or Stop Flying Button, Is Missing

Why it is not in the pie menu toggling "Sit here"/"Stand Up" is a mystery.

I love this sim. I need to figure out how to reduce the lag for filming before the event ends at Some point.
    thanks for uploading this video!!

You are welcome. Ohh yes, did the video 2K recording with like 40+ avatars celebrating in sim and people coming and going  .. the lag monster climbed into the mine. Hence the occasionally abrupt recording of me, as I walk around.  A distinct display texture caching also occurred, where a vendor in focus was gray. But all in all the RTX 3070 with Firestorm in max ultra graphics with all whistles and bangs enabled did rather well.

Standing still meant no erupt recording.
