  1. It's inspired me to learn some new things, particularly with GIMP and Blender, though I still have a long way to go. Learning that was a big deal when I was going through some tough stuff IRL, since it gave me a little something that I could look at and see yes, I improved something and had a small accomplishment to be happy with.
  2. If it costs a lot of money to fix the code to make name changes possible, then they won't do it unless they think they'll recoup the costs. Either in direct payments or in better user retention leading to the money coming back through tier payments, MP fees, etc. It doesn't make sense to offer a service that won't help them make money, whether directly or indirectly. So if they don't think that name changes are going to pay for themselves by making users spend more money on other things, they have two choices - charge to change, or don't let people change at all. Having the option to change one's username at a price is better than no choice at all.
  3. What I would be if I could choose and had few constraints, plus a few minor changes to fit the platform. Appearance roughly what I'd pick. She gets to stay home with her daughter all day as a young married mom, and do stuff around the house. The family will get much bigger over time. We're different, but not - we like the same things, for the most part, but our lives turned out very differently. Honestly, she's more "mainstream" and what some would consider boring than I am. But I like it that way.
  4. No, only if I was paying someone to do something on commission.
  5. My first choice would be individual colors with a demo that lets me see several of them, second choice a HUD with a copyable clothing item the scripts can be deleted from. Set the color, copy, delete the scripts from one of the copies. I'll buy something good either way, though.
  6. I just discovered another niche use for alts: reducing your permissions on copies of items you made. I'm scripting a bakery for personal use that only works well when the baking items are no-copy, but I can't set it up like that when I made the meshes and scripts myself. There's a solution. Passing them to my alt full-perm and then changing the permissions as the alt makes it work. He can rez the prop giver with props inside, which will freely make copies under his full permissions, and give me one I can't copy.
  7. When I have something I don't want to get accidentally changed or picked up, I set it to "locked" in the build editor. Learned my lesson after trying to grab something on the ground of my sky platform and grabbing the platform instead! That specific change looks like some kind of weird error, though, probably not something you did.
  8. I'm 5'4" IRL and wear a US 9. 6.4 ratio. I always thought that was a big shoe for my size but I guess it's not that much. My avatar is 5'7".
  9. Maybe. I'd RP her as having one and posting pictures to it. Making a real one to post pictures to might be worth it, might not be. It's a lot of work, and also would add some fun activity and be an opportunity to show things I've made. So right now I have too much else going on, would consider it later.
  10. Also the permissions on the object shown in your inventory don't always match what they functionally are. For full-perm it shouldn't have any restrictions, but the box it comes in might. It's possible that the item comes with a no-mod script in it, which makes the entire thing show as no-modify in inventory even though you can modify everything else about the item and can even delete and replace the script with a different one.
  11. Oh, no. I don't want the marketplace to shut down; shopping in-world has a lot of benefits and a lot of downsides. Before my PC upgrade, inworld shopping was almost impossible to navigate. Anywhere with more than two or three avatars dropped the framerate deep into single digits - I've seen 3 before, and couldn't even move my avi. Some sims have so much high-poly decor on everything that even as the only avatar it was tough for the PC to deal with. A lot of people have trouble with high-traffic / poorly optimized regions, and using the MP cuts down on how much lag they have to push through to get a new pair of shoes or a tree for their yard. Then when you want something ve4ry specific and don't already know where to find it, the MP will get you to it faster. Inworld, the majority of clothing creators have little to nothing that I'd want to buy; some of it is very nice quality but it's not a style my avi would want to wear (nor would I RL). MP has the same offerings, more or less, in a form that's much faster to search through and easier to filter. At the cost of being less immersive and needing a separate demo if you want to look before you buy. Newer and limited offering creators also benefit more from the MP. Even if you only have 10 items, they show up in MP searches the same as any other regular listing that meets the search criteria. Inworld means most customers won't even bother looking. There are good reasons to have both systems running parallel and not try to funnel everyone into one or the other.
  12. They could open name changes to basic accounts if they do it at all, but either way they have to charge more than a trivial amount, to keep people (of either account type) from abusing the privilege. Realistically they'd probably charge extra for basic accounts on top of whatever the change fee is. At that point it would make more sense to get premium for one month, get the change done, and then not renew. Still no real idea what the fee would be, but I've heard numbers around $20 or $25 USD floated as rumors, so I don't think a one month membership, especially factoring in the stipend, would be a huge barrier to anyone who was willing to pay the change fee in the first place.
  13. The "premium perk" I'd actually want is being able to pick a surname. I've been Resident since 2014. Didn't like the generic surname then, really don't like it now. It would be better if groups stayed the same for existing basic members and the number available went down for NEW basic accounts, and the surname change was rolled out as an extra paid feature available to premium members only. New basic accounts are either brand-new people, who won't be as involved in as many RPs / social groups / merchant things for awhile as people who have been here for years or over a decade, or they're alts and the user behind the alt can get by with fewer on that account. I rarely exceed a dozen groups, but that's apparently unusual.
  14. Meh. Don't care about group maximums or IM caps and don't have the money to buy a full region so this costs more for the same service. I'll keep the premium membership, though. It's too bad we can't pick different "extras" or have them a la carte. Like if premium pricing stayed the same, but you can add $1/mo more for each of higher IM caps, higher group limit, half price uploads, and so on. I'd use an upload discount.
  15. As for clothes, I've found shopping on the marketplace to be less frustrating and more efficient than inworld. I have a preference for clothes that look upscale and are somewhat modest, stuff someone might wear IRL to a dinner party or to work in an office. And a couple of regular sweater/jeans outfits for spending time in the wintry outdoors. When you don't want club clothes, it's easier to use the MP where you can use keyword searches and see dozens of pictures at a time. I only shop inworld if I found and liked their products on the MP first.
  16. There's a store near me that has very good hummus, cheap.
  17. Primary: Item/script/animation testing Secondaries: Deterring people from hitting on me. I get to fill in the "in a relationship with" box with his name. I am not interested in SL romance so this makes for a nice diplomatic way to get people to leave me alone about it. Second group member so I can have a group for my family already set up with two members. If someone else wants to join it's ready to go. Bonuses: A yellow dot on my parcel so my green one doesn't get lonely. Exploring areas that my main wouldn't go but me behind the keyboard is curious about.
  18. My biggest problem with gachas is resellers with terrible keyword spam. Filtering out no-copy items gets rid of most of them, but then you miss out on good gachas that do fit your search, and any other no-copy items that would fit your needs too. There's too many items to flag. I'll sometimes flag two or three if a particular reseller is excessively spamming. You can check what keywords they use if you look at the page source code on the item page, then you know if it was a minor error or a long line of bad keywords. LL needs to come down harder on the ones who regularly do this. To those who take the time to write their product descriptions and keywords well, thank you.
  19. If everything came in a box, I put a copy of the full box in a backup folder, and then delete everything from the open folder that doesn't fit my body. That way the other copies are easy to get to if they're ever needed and there's not much inventory clutter.
  20. As a renter I'd want pricing by the meter as long as it didn't come out to higher price per meter than by prims. Before I bought my parcel I rented a 4096 platform and it didn't have very many prims. I'd rather have a big space than extra prims because I like having a lot of room and am very stingy with LI. If I had the choice between $300L for a 4096 with 200 prims, or $250L for a 2048 with 250 prims, I'd take the 4096. That's for platforms but even on land rentals I'd be okay with low prim count in exchange for more land.
  21. I'm fine with a small fee on a demo that's usable, like in the sample packs. I think it's unwise to charge if it's something unusable, though. You turn off a lot of customers, and yes, some WOULD have bought the item. I've passed up paid demos, picked up some free ones, and then bought one or two of those items. Being able to send them as a gift is something I didn't think of, but I still would assume it loses more sales than the ease of gifting demos gains.
  22. I would never judge someone for sticking to the basics. I used the classic avatar until about a month ago and I've had an account since 2014. The snapshot in my photo is with the old one. I didn't feel like spending $2500L+ on a mesh body with a complicated HUD and when I was satisfied with the way my avi looked. Honestly my new avi doesn't look very different, it's just a lot easier to find clothes and shoes now, which was my motivation to switch. Turned out the HUD was a lot easier to use than I thought it would be too. A starter avatar with no customization done is a little off-putting, but it doesn't have to be a huge overhaul.
  23. IME in Firestorm if the problem is having missing textured faces, it tells you that specifically; it's a different error from missing level of detail. I get the texture error sometimes on low or very low LODs when I forget to make a triangle of the ones I didn't otherwise need in L/VL - oops.
  24. Commercials would be worse. I disabled outside media in my viewer because I don't care about it. In this hypothetical, do you get out of seeing ads if you have streaming turned off entirely in your viewer?
