  1. No one can lame your confusion, there is a steep learning curve when starting SL an the guides are very outdated for the most part. However you are in luck because there are plenty of people willing to help! I just started in April so I understand fully how you feel right now. I am sure someone more versed in guiding people will speak up but from my noob perspective here are some answers to your questions. The new Avatars now start with a Mesh body, these bodies will not be compatible with anything other than mesh clothes, most of the noob area freebies you will see are the older clothes made for the older default bodies. Here are some basics..... Shape- when right clicking on yourself and choosing appearance, you can adjust the shape of your avatar. Ie how big your butt is, long your arms are, wide your forehead is etc. this works with the default old avatar bodies not sure about the new ones. Skin- skin refers to the covering of your body and face. The pigmentation, and any cosmetics the skin creator put on it, the "look of the outside of you" Mesh attachments- many people do not like the default avatars feet, hands, butts, or boobs so there are attachments you can purchase to change these things. The default Avatar shape is very angular, you can have smoother looking extremities that I listed by using mesh. That said, you already have a mesh body on right now but you can still swap out these parts if you wish. Think of them as add ons. It gets a little more complicated because you can swap out eyes, hair, tattoo layers to change cosmetics or add overall body tattoos, bruises, anything you can think of. In terms of compatibility most mesh attachments will work once you are able to adjust your body, for example I had to make my arms a bit meatier in order to look right with my Mesh hands. If you feel overwhelmed don't give up. Reach out and I promise people will help you.. You can always IM me and I will try to walk you through making your look your own. Some great resources for me were the second life reddit and plurk because people constantly post to these forums so any information you will get will be up to date. Good luck on your journey!
  2. I go to several clubs that have these contests daily and I have received many votes and I have never once been omen asking to partner up. Granted I have only been playing since April
  3. As a noob and someone who is interesting in learning how to create, retexture, etc. I am sure I make mistakes all the time. I don't sell my items but I would like to soon, and I would hope people who decide they are worth paying for would be patient and accepting of my mistakes just as I hope to be the kind of creator who will be able to address them in a timely manner. For most SL creators I would assume, and again I am new so this is an assumption, that this is a hobby not a full fledged business that supports their RL. I wouldn't get upset about not getting immediate responses from creators but I guess it depends on the price of the items in question. The good news is you have now turned me on to Meli Imako so you can look forward to more amateur retextures of her items.
  4. I just started experimenting with this myself. My friend gave me some templates to use for some retexturing of mesh clothing to start with and now I am playing with Blender. Be prepared to find a lot of useless links and outdated videos. It can be frustrating if you are trying to follow along and realize the software and tech has been updated several times since the creation of the video! If you are looking for a buddy in learning all this please send me a notecard in game! I would love to swap links and tips with someone who is also just learning!
  5. I have only been here a month and I have already made a lot of great SL buddies. How did I do it? I got involved! I joined the Roller Derby League, I hung out at the clubs and places most likely to have people who shared my interests and I was VOCAL! I do not wait for people to IM me. I IM them and if they are busy, or not interested in talking trust me they will let you know! If all else fails, IM me and I would be happy to hang out. I am always looking for new peeps!
  6. I have a high end rig but I have an older graphics card and because of this combo I have found I constantly need to play around with different settings , sometimes even change viewer depending on what sim I am visiting and what I am doing in SL. Just keep messing about til it works for ya.
  7. I am gonna take a stab at translation here. I think what he is saying is he owns a sim that he pays 18,300L for and he doesn't understand how people advertise sim rentals at only a 600 linden markup. Sounds like he wants to know if there is some discount he should be receiving or if there is a tier pricing these people were grandfathered in to.
  8. I really like Wow Skins, not sure if it fits what you are looking for. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mawaii/195/62/2505
  9. Tried to teleport there but it says only members of a certain group can be there?
  10. Thank you for everyone's help! Jade was correct, the full version went smooth with no problems , only a few minor adjustments to my shape. Now on to feet!
  11. As a new user it really put me off. I thought perhaps these forums were long dead because my initial perusal of this site showed nothing but spam. It wasn't until I dig further that I saw yes indeed, people still do post here!
  12. I am new to SL and bought 5000L to dump into making my avatar presentable. I love the slink hands but when I tried on the demo there was a gap on the forearm above the wrist. I read the enclosed notecard and made adjustments to my shape in order to conform I the standardized sizing they listed. Anyone have any thoughts or tips about this? I am about ready to just cover it up with bracelets!
