I'd like to remind people that the Linden Lab Official:Forum Participation Guidelines start with It would, I think, be generally appreciated, not least by me, if people could express their disagreements about PBR without resorting to sarcasm or otherwise belittling people with whom they disagree. It doesn't add anything to the discussion, and I fear it can only be off-putting to people who want to ask questions about this new (at least for SL) technology but are worried about being dismissed as idiots for not understanding things.

We know you enjoy speculating about what we're doing, and we enjoy reading your speculations -- some of which are spookily accurate and some of which are wildly off-beam.
-
I don't know. I'd suggest you attend one of the Content Creator User Group meetings and ask there.

As I understand it, it's a myth that lots of people log into SL with very low spec machines -- LL see the default graphics settings that viewers apply when they're installed, whatever people may later set them to, and apparently the vast majority of users have machines that can easily handle medium to higher-range graphics settings. The only sizeable constituency who use very low end machines are bots, who are logged in on text-only viewers for obvious reasons. Certainly from I've been told, people won't find that PBR means they can't log in. It shouldn't make a big difference to people's performance, at least not with the Official Viewer. And that's been our experience in LPDW, where we use a wide variety of different machines, and those of who have them, have deliberately been testing PBR viewer on our low-end backup laptops. If your machine can't cope with particular PBR features, you won't see them, just as not everyone has been able to use particular graphics settings in the past. It shouldn't spoil your SL.

We Moles have been testing the various PBR viewers for some months now (well, we had to, to build Winter Wonderland, of course, but that wasn't the only reason). We use a variety of machines of all shapes and sizes -- I'm still running a GeForce GTX 660 GPU ! -- and I don't think any of us have experienced particular performance issues with the more recent builds. At least Windows users haven't. I know the Mac users were having difficulties not so long ago, but I think those have now been ameliorated, if not completely fixed.

The randomness is, in this case, intentional. If you fiddle with it enough, sooner or later it'll blow up.

Perhaps the conversation about CMNF, BDSM and other kinks would, if people want to pursue it at any length, be better conducted in a thread of its own, perhaps in the adult forum. I don't think this thread is right place for serious and extended discussions about any topic.

If you come across another one you can't restart, let me know and I'll gladly take a look. The long touch script recognises Lindens, Moles and the parcel owner, and I can't think of why it wouldn't know who the parcel owner is, whatever problems the main script is having. Clearly it does work for the parcel owner, at least in some cases.

We've got a fix and are waiting for it to pass QA (unfortunately, this is our busiest time of year, so QA's time is limited). However, as I've said several times in other thread, every time I've investigated the issue, I've been able to reset the house controllers by touching them, holding down the left mouse button for 10 seconds and releasing it. When people IM me about it, I tell them to do that, and that I'll come over and take a look if it doesn't work, but please to try that first, and it always works for them. From this I conclude that 10 seconds is longer than many people think. If you find any more house controllers like that, ping me and, if I'm online, I'll come over and take a look with you.

Cross Posting... Love it or Hate it?

Since this thread seems unlikely to provide any more useful insights for anyone into the merits or otherwise of cross posting, and since the discussion keeps on getting personal, I think it's best to end the discussion here. -
Cross Posting... Love it or Hate it?
Quartz Mole replied to Bagnu's topic in General Discussion Forum
I've just removed a post containing a completely uncalled for attack on another poster, and a couple of posts replying to it. These forums are not the place to air grievances with other posters. Do it in personal messages if you must, and if you think their behaviour in these forums is objectionable, report the offending posts and we'll take a look. But don't post about it in public threads. -
This thread is about Why is SL Clothing Mostly Overtly Sexual? If people feel they must complain about First Life fashions and dress sense, the Pet Peeves thread is available. Please reserve this thread for a discussion of SL fashions.

Closed (another thread on the subject exist already)
Quartz Mole replied to Always Incognito's topic in Linden Homes
I've just visited both locations and reset the house controllers by left clicking on them and holding down the left mouse button for 10 seconds before releasing it. -
I don't think you can have held down the left mouse button for long enough. Hold it down for 10 seconds (time it if necessary) before releasing it. If that doesn't work, drop me a message and I'll take a look, but I'm pretty sure that's the problem. We're working on a tool to unfreeze all the house controllers remotely, but until that's ready the long-touch should fix it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I think all that can usefully be said about the topic has been said, so I'm closing this thread.

Tempers seem to be getting rather frayed, and I've had to remove several posts. Please, remember the forum guidelines: For what it's worth, I think a new thread on "How does your avatar look when enhanced by AI?" might be a very good idea, not least since it could be argued that this thread is supposed to be about How does your avatar look today? rather than How can third-party software enhance images of your avatar today? Those seem to me to be two different, though clearly related and equally valid and interesting, topics. But that's just a suggestion rather than any sort of official ruling. Whatever you post, though, please keep let's keep things civil.

SSP83X is where Dyna and I tend to work when we're not working elsewhere. We could be working on any number of things. Could be house controllers but could be a lot more besides, not always Linden Homes related.

At this point, or so I understand it, reflections aren't supposed to be used for making mirrors (though they can be, as noted above, if you don't mind trashing your frame rate and stressing your GPU). At present, they're primarily for changing the way light and shadows are reflected from/projected onto surfaces, so you don't have to bake those into textures. I'm told we may get actual mirrors at some point, but not yet. See the discussion here for more details

That's to be expected -- Linden Lab's engineers have been trying to ensure legacy content doesn't dramatically change its appearance as a result of PBR. We in LDPW are finding, though, that PBR content looks far better than does legacy content made with the Blinn-Phong model. You'll should also find, if you play around with interior probes inside buildings, that you have much more control over local lighting that you did before (so, for example, you can stop lights shining through walls).

There's no need, of course, to attend the user group meetings before submitting a jira request or report. But if someone is thinking of submitting a request and wants to discuss it with the Lindens who will be dealing with it, that's the way to do it. Pinging them in the forums won't do any good.
