  1. Orca Flotta wrote: @ Rudy and Alicia: you fall for every kind of propaganda and misinformation or are you just naturally evil? If Mandela was a terrorist after he blew up some electricity poles, what then was George Washington? On the contrary, Orca, you share the sanitised memories of the placatory world community. Mandela co-founded (with the South African Communist Party) the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe, whose violent operations he endorsed with a manifesto which stated "Our men are armed and trained freedom fighters not terrorists." and which violence he justified, in the same way as it ever was "because the government had left us with no other choice". I would highlight as an example the Amanzimtoti bombing incident in 1985, when five civilians were killed - including three children. Electricity poles? History may be written by the winners, but it may be more difficult nowadays to eliminate the truth. My previous comments stand. I would have preferred not to have gone into detail, as I believe 27 years in prison gave him time to meditate (as well as offering the the unintended benefit that he didn't have to live with Winnie) on his actions, and thus develop the attitude of sainthood which is presumably his destiny, as figurehead of an internal movement which was demonstrably impotent until the rest of the world came to its rescue. **********Rudi**********
  2. Max FPS IS working. He got a better job offer for more money than LL were paying him and now he's full time doing extended maths calculations for an open source spreadsheet. **********Rudi**********
  3. Kudos to Mandela, the most effective griefer of the 20th Century. His enduring effect on history is the salutory reminder that one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. **********Rudi**********
  4. Storm Clarence wrote: I've played SL for years at ~10 FPS or less. I am currently getting ~70 on ultra. Yes, I notice the difference, but do I need all that? What are the trade-offs, if any? You can see how ******* ugly most of the ******* avatars are. On the upside it makes ******* stalking and perving easier. **********Rudi**********
  5. Orca Flotta wrote: What bothers me most is ... ... that obviously nobody ever proof read that cartoon: "Did you passed" :smileyindifferent: It's hardly worth ******* commenting upon as it is so obviously the work of a ******* ESLer. **********Rudi********** ETA: Yep! I checked, and the author is a ******* German. Probably a ******* Mac user too.
  6. All ******* locations in SL are functionally topologically equivalent. A ******* map is a ******* irrelevance and conceptually ******* speciously accurate. You might as well ask for a ******* location map of where the ******* servers are situated in the real ******* world. **********Rudi**********
  7. **** mainly. Well, it was at about the time in ******* prehistory that this ******* thread originally got posted. **********Rudi**********
  8. This must be a ******* American thing. In England the ******* Sales Assistants stand around by the ******* fire exits (so they can have a sneaky ******* smoke when the ******* boss isn't looking) gossiping to each other and ignoring the ******* customers until they are asked a ******* question at which point they make it ******* clear they are doing you a ******* favour by taking your ******* money. I ******* prefer it that way, actually. It's those ******* drones shoving oversize ******* trollies around during normal hours picking internet ******* orders that really **** me off. **********Rudi**********
  9. "No manne is an iland, intire of it selfe; every manne is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mannes death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mannekinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee...." It seems you're ******* channelling John Donne, Criminal Manne. You may ******* think you are ******* expressing yourself in a (ironically) modern ******* fashion, but your ******* spelling and grammar are actually as ******* antediluvian as your imagination. You should at least spell it "gonne". **********Rudi**********

  11. Ever, Jane - the virtual world of Jane Austen "Dinner parties, not dungeons" "Tell lies about your rivals, and use gossip as the weapon of choice to demolish enemies" "Choose Happiness over Duty" It looks perfect! ETA Recommendation withdrawn; I have just found out that it's the brainchild of a former LL employee. **********Rudi**********
  12. Storm Clarence wrote: Cut his losses? But, but it's a fully funded project! It's a win-win for the OP. Your enthusiasm is suspicious Storm. In the spirit of disclosure can you confirm that you have no longer have a business interest in, or connection with the NSA, the CIA or MongoDB. Now that you have retired as a contract assassin, that is. **********Rudi**********
  13. Venus Petrov wrote: All of the RL images you need to map to SL avatars can be found in a very beta-beta version of SL (called Macintosh). All you need do now is go inworld and start snapping photos. P.S. the blonde chick is Philip Linden in drag. There, now, you have a head start. That must have been before the "jiggle" option was implemented, because despite all that bounding and twirling, Philip's decidely ample bosom doesn't appear to bounce a millimetre. Or maybe he's wearing a Jean-Paul Gautier designed sports bra. **********Rudi**********
  14. Storm Clarence wrote: I hate to derail, but, again, I was wondering if the Doctor has access to drone technology? If the Doc doesn't, Phil does. Oh, you mean that sort of drone. **********Rudi**********
  15. Slyvar wrote: In terms of the research question of this specific study, we are primarily interested in what factors go into people's choices of avatar. What is it that makes one person chose one type of avatar and a different person chose a different type? Why do some people chose to use avatars that reflect their RL appearance, whilst others do not? Do you actually realise that this is a non-starter? Most participants in SL not only have multiple accounts, but also have any number of versions of their avatars, with different sexual orientations, shapes and skins (human and otherwise) which are changed according to the company being kept, the activities being engaged in, the time of year, and for most females, to accessorise their current favourite pair of shoes. Add to that the shift in understanding of the options available through time, and the advances in technology which impact upon appearance, together with economic factors, and the correlation between virtual representation and reality (which also changes, although hair colour washes out more slowly and six-packs turn inexorably into beer barrels) is negligible, or if it exists, will be specious. And then there are the kid avatars . . . You obviously haven't a clue about how SL works. Cut your losses and quit now, before you get suckered into generating inadmissable conclusions by a bunch of illegal minors who will send you photos of their parents in order to get their hands on the equivalent of a weekend paper round's wages. **********Rudi**********
  16. Storm Clarence wrote: Doc, I was also wondering if you could pass off the daily Mumbai spam posts to your DHS bedmates. Please ask them to ask the spammer to provide photos of the Indian escorts as part of the spam. We may as well enjoy the RL photos of the most prolific posters to SLF. Don't ya think? Funny you should say this. One of the related studies referenced by the SuperIdentity site is Project Aadhaar, which aims to get fingerprints and iris scans to identify all those escorts and digipimps, inter alia. Oh, and that project has achieved infamy because one of the firms collecting the identity data, MongoDB (which is a New York company) is funded by the CIA . . . . . . although at least the CIA have admitted that it funds initiatives which "identify, adapt and deliver innovative technology solutions to support the missions of CIA and the broader US intelligence community." It gets more and more amusing - and scary. I'm delighted that nobody knows who I actually am. Apart from that ex-Russian with an anvil on her head that used to hang around the forums who rang me up at home and tried to sell me some junk bonds, then ordered several pizzas to be delivered to me, which my kids really enjoyed, but which I, of course, refused to pay for. And anyone else remotely digitally literate. **********Rudi**********
  17. I am male and when I started SL I had half a mind to play a female. It meant I could watch sport on TV with the other half. **********Rudi**********

I believe someone much more technosavvy than myself has suggested that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. **********Rudi**********
  22. GCHQ do a lot of dirty work on the net monitoring and surveillance side for the US. I guess it's like extraordinary rendition of data . . . Deniable because someone else actually carried out the wetwork, funded by the US taxpayer. **********Rudi**********
  23. The most recent published results of the SuperIdentity (SID!) project make hysterical reading. Here is their conclusion on avatar design following a survey they did which was presumably similar to the one they are currently floating: "If the avatar isn’t unbelievably crazy looking...it's probably pretty spot on" Right . . . **********Rudi**********
  24. Storm Clarence wrote: When I see the spam I go about my business and check back later. We all hate spammers, but what is almost as worse as spam are OP's about spam. I think the worst sort of spam is the continuing posting of opinions about spam in threads about spam. **********Rudi**********
