  1. How many of you try to make your avatar look like your offline selves. I don't mean just, "We have the same hair cut" or "We have the same color eyes", I mean the resemblance is so strong that if a full body photo of both you and your avatar were side-by-side, that there was no mistake that your avatar looks like you (face, body, hair, etc.). It doesn't have to be PRECISE, but in the ballpark. Are there any studies on this? Like, "People who choose to be something completely different are more creative" or anything like that? I find it interesting. Thanks!
  2. I think both for me. I'll get into this later, but I don't think SL is the sole culprit for losing interest IRL. I grew up with SL and been online on and off when I was a early teen, but I became really active around late highschool several years ago. There wasn't and isn't anything like it. I would play MMOs before SL, but I think SL drew me in with its potential with what you could do. Over the years and through talking to people in-world (and on this forum), I have learned new knowledge and picked up a few skills like how to communicate and express myself more clearly online and RL, tech-knowledge, learn how to style my RL home and my appearance, graphic design, and 3D-modeling. Again, SL wasn't the sole reason for me learning those things, but it helped. When I entered college, I began to struggle with my mental health and I think SL became a growing space for me creatively. When I was stressed I would try to unwind by exploring or editing skyboxes and it would help, I think. I think people need a space to grow and be alone, and SL was part of that, for me. Why I could have trouble connecting with RL is kinda a question Im trying to answer. Am I struggling with that because I invested my childhood with online games and that was a big part of my mental illness, was it because of mental health alone, or both? I'll keep that in mind for my next therapist visit.
  3. Hello! It seems whenever I try to start second life by clicking the official viewer, I get a message to update my viewer and I agree. However, it says it cannot run and my only option is to "Abort". I can still log on just fine, but this happens every time and I'm not sure how to fix it. Any suggestions? -Thanks!
  4. I have a desktop with these specs: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz (3392.18 MHz) Memory: 16338 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970/PCIe/SSE2 My advice is this: You don't need the highest specs EVAR to run SL at lightin-fast speeds, you most likely won't even if you do. SL's lag is notorious and it mostly comes from their side of things not yours. Of course this doesn't mean you can run SL with a computer from the 90's. Even with my specs, fast-wired connection to internet (SL can have issues with wifi) and if I'm in a place that doesn't promote tons of lag, SL will still have it's issues because SL isn't just a game that remains the same, it's CONSTANTLY changing. If you have the money, invest in a better GPU and hope for the best. Also, if you're debating between desktop and laptop, go for the desktop. Personally, it's just makes more sense cooling-wise, the ability to upgrade for the future, and you get more bang for your buck. For laptops you're just paying for mobility. They're okay for a luxury but my desktop is my main system for these reasons. Hope everything goes okay!
  5. Thank you very much! Your play-by-play really helped and I now have all the windlight options to my use!
  6. Hello! So, I came to the conlusion that I only really use the firestorm viewer because of all the preinstalled windlight options. I was wondering if there was a way I could download the windlight files from the Firestorm folder on my computer to the Linden Lab viewer folder. I tried to experiment a bit and now my screen is completely black when I log in-world (which makes sense since I deleted the original windlight folder files in the official viewer settings to be replaced by the firestorm files), but before I reinstall the Linden Lab viewer to fix my mistake, can anyone give me any help on how I would go about this. I Just want to have all those pretty windlights in the official viewer for my use! Thank you!
  7. Thank you! That gives me a lot to think about. Right, I know it's 4GB, but will that bite me later on when games demand for more VRAM?
  8. What about that 8GB of VRAM? That seems good for future proofing, no?
  9. Hello! After much searching through the web I finally pinned down my decision to two Graphics cards. Nvidia gtx 970: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NH5T1MS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER AMD r9 390: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202164 (Those cards specifically) What I'm basically looking for is: A card that's long lasting (not performance, but in life expectancy without completely dying). I count long lasting by being at least 5+ years.Cooling. (I don't care if the Nvidia is a LIL bit better with temperature, if the AMD's cooling is good enough to let the card last longer, that's fine.)Future proofing (The thing that got me interested in the r9 390 was it's 8GB of Vram which I hear can help me out in the future if newer games use this benefit)This is my first time ever looking to buy a AMD so if anyone has any experiences they would like to share, that'd be great. Overall, I don't plan on being a "hardcore gamer". As of now, the gtx 760 I have now works fine and I couldn't be happier. I just happen to have the money now and what to upgrade. In fact, I think SL is probably the heaviest application I run. So, no problem if I run my settings on med. 5 years from now on furture games. My System Specs: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz (3392.17 MHz) Memory: 8146 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6350 (The 760 I had is going through some refurbishing) Another thing people tend to warn me about is heat/noise and wattage consumption. Is the difference between these cards in those factors THAT much to make note of? If it also helps, I don't plan on overclocking and looking more of a plug-in and play experience. Nothing complicated. Thank you! :matte-motes-big-grin:
  10. Hello! I was recently editing my skybox in a sandbox. After placing down some items, the sim crashed and once I relogged, the items I recently rezzed have disappeared. I've checked my inventory and I can't seem to find them (not even in lost and found). I don't know how I should go about this and if I were to send LL a ticket, what's the likelihood that they would respond? Has this situation happened to you before? Also, some of these items are non-copy so I can't just drag them out of the box I bought them in again. :L Thank you!
  11. Hey everyone! So, I'm thinking about upgrading my Nvidia GTX 760 to a 970. I hear great things about it, but I know for SL it's a much different story when it comes to how well it will perform. My questions are how much of a difference should I get if I were to make this upgrade compred to the 760 specifically for second life? Would it be worth the $300 investment? What should I expect? Thank you!
  12. Hello! I was wondering if selling my current GPU (Nvidia GTX 760) for a more recent and seemingly powerful GPU, the Nvidia GTX970, would be a worthwhile investment. At the moment, SL is probably the most demanding program I use on my system. The 760 I have works fine. I run SL through a wired internet connection and overall I hardly lag and rarely, if not ever, crash. What I want to know is if I do make the upgrade, will the changes be significant enough to make the purchase and what should I expect from the upgrade specifically when running SL. Is there there a certain cut-off in which you can only do so much on your end to have a well-built system for SL but it really boils down to the servers? Like, nothing is noticable after so-and-so amount of RAM, GPU, CPU power? Here are my system specs: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz (3392.18 MHz) Memory: 8146 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 760/PCIe/SSE My Speedtest scores: Ping: 17ms DWNLD Speed: 57.47 Mbps UPLD Speed: 5.89 Mbps Thanks in advance and please ask if you need more info for more accurate answers!
  13. I know many stand by their opinion that SL doesn't have just one single community, but a multitude of them. Now, though I understand and can agree to some extent, I would like to make a comparision. If you've ever played an MMORPG, there's usually a feature in which players can create a "guild'. Guilds are groups of players who join up together to perform a specific task such as crafting, hunting, collecting, or just simply a group of friends who just want to hangout and enjoy the game together. I tend to see guilds in MMORPG's the same way we see groups in SL. However, no matter what way you cut it, each and every group have something in common no matter how different they are from each other. We all enjoy/use SL. So, as a whole and not just from the groups you associate with, what is your opinion on the grid's community? I'm not excluding your groups at all, they are definately valid in your decision, but what about newbs, random strangers you meet/chat with while you're exploring, that woman you saw walking into a wall for 2 minutes straight. Put it all together and say what you like, what you don't like, or just a simple summary on SL's public. Maybe this can hopefully be applied to the new Sansar project and what we would also like from it! Thank you!
  14. If you're interested in selling, please post here or IM me in-world. If there's no difference in the flip flops for either gender, I don't mind taking the female version. Thank you!
  15. Thank you for starting and answering in this thread! -Has the lab thought about prepaid cards? If I remember correctly, I believe LL decided on accepting teen users. Though I do believe some may have credit cards, I don't think many do and the those that do would'nt be comfortable giving their info out. I remember for certain MMOs, instead of using my credit card, I would pay $10 or $25 on a prepaid card for a certain game company and on the back of the card was a code you would type in on their site to redeem in-game credit. Though I don't think the traditional way of buying currency with a credit card is a bad idea, I do think that maybe buying Lindens this way may help those who would like an alternative though I'm not sure if Sansar will even have the same currency or a fluctuating economy and how that would all work. -Will Sansar support wireless more efficiently rather than relying heavily on a wired set-up for Internet connection?
  16. I would also like to know what the lab has to say about this. I do agree that it's expecting too much for an older system to run SL/PS with effortlessly, but if you're expecting your user base to all have "gaming" computers, you're going to cut down on your number of users a lot which is, what I believe, is a big reason why people don't stick around in SL. I had plenty of people say they were interested and gave it a try but just simply couldn't run it even if their laptops had a pretty decent graphics card.
  17. Sorry to the OP if I made that mistake. D= It seemed like the person was looking for specific groups/locations that were active and gave updates not only to what's going on in a specific area but, the person wanted a group that dedicated it's time to informing it's members on what's happening in the grid as a whole to what the person was interested in. I don't know if there is such a thing but, there could be. Closest I could think of were websites that dedicate themselves to keeping tabs on the events that occur in SL and maybe once the OP did some searching, they could've found a few they liked. That's why I recommended going to locations dedicated to specific interest inworld and asking around to people who know more about the interests the OP's looking for so that maybe they could help them instead if no one on these forums could. If you have anything to add, please do.
  18. You can hook up a Xbox controller to SL.
  19. Hey there! =D Personally, the way I found the groups I'm in and the sims I visit was through other people by either finding the places/groups directly(IMing them, local chat, etc.) or indirectly by looking through the "picks" and "groups" tabs in their profiles. A good way on how to do this is to pick a certain keyword, for example, jazz, and typing that into the search and I'm sure tons of areas will pop up. You can then filter the areas to specifics like, how popular it is, the ammount of traffic that goes into that area and a bunch of other things. Then, once you've teleported to the area, ask around. Ask are there any sims like this or maybe the people there may share other interests and they can show you they're favorite places to visit. Also, if you like the place, join the group to get updates on what's going on! This will also help to make sure the groups you have are active. Certain groups, usually for a specific sims, announce when events are taking place but, only in that sim. I don't know of any groups that keep track of what's going around the grid as a whole as to what events are taking place. However, alot of blogs and other websites may have something close to what you're looking for if you just google and search enough and maybe you'll find one(or a few) that are right up you're alley. Just go one keyword at the time and your group list is sure to fill up. I hope this helps!
  20. I had this question on my mind when I bought a new desktop last Christmas. Around Black-Friday, I registered with a website that builds their systems from scratch. I looked up a few articles and websites that explained what each spec and part does so I was making sure I was getting what I wanted/needed for a fair price, and I was pretty excited. Christmas came and after I took the time to download and install the things I needed to be on my desktop, I downloaded some games and programs, including SL. My computer was running fine and everything seemed to be moving at a regular pace around my avatar when I was inworld, but I could barely move or couldn't move at all. I went into the adanced menu to view my fps to see that I was getting around 7fps or 20fps. Not inbetween, the number would land on one of those numbers every few minutes. It was either on or the other. So, I switched sims thinking that there was something causing the trouble like too many people, objects, etc. (which made me worry since that would mean that the money I spent on my GPU and other parts would be for basically nothing when it came to running SL.), and moved to an empty lot, and still, the same problem. This time the fps didn't jump, it was now more consistent. It was running between 5-7fps. I tried different things to solve the problem. Turned off the computers and laptops that may be interfering with my connection, adjusted the graphics, replugged the router, went to see how my internet browser (chrome) was doing when it came to watching videos on Youtube (which worked fine), waited every other hour to check and see if I would have any luck, but everything stayed the same. I googled my issue hoping that I would find some clue on what to do next and how I should approach things. After a bit of searching I found a bit of info on how much a wi-fi connection would effect SL...negatively. So, about a month later, I decided to switch my new desktop connection from a wireless to a wired one since I wanted to see how this would all play out.. My fps jumped from 5fps to 50fps and to this day, on average, that speed still remains the same for me. The reason I'm asking this now rather than last year when this problem came up for me is because recently a friend was interested in creating an account and downloading SL and was having the exact same problem I was having or his computer was freezing up a lot, but he was running his viewer on a laptop (we both use the official viewer). He then connected his laptop to a wired connection like mine to see how it would work out and he was running SL just fine with pretty decent FPS even though he had a pretty low end computer with intel graphics, he just had to tweak the graphics a bit and keep that connection. So, does LL expect their users to all have top-notch internet connections to simply log in and move around? They do realize that not every one can fork over close to a grand to buy a system to run their program and pay the money for a wired connection just for a single program, right? Most people use laptops and the majority that have desktops have them, but are much older meaning they would have a lot of upgrading to do... I understand it's incredibly unrealistic to expect SL to run efficently on a old computer or a one with a crappy internet connection, but when you have a decent wireless connection that can load websites and other programs well enough that you're not waiting minutes for a screen to load and have well above average specs, but the program you want to run is having issues running because your connection isn't the "best", then that's going to alienate alot of newer users who want to give SL a chance since many probably won't got out of their way to get a wired connection JUST for SL/one program. Most will take Speed/consistency over top notch graphics anyday. Having it the other way around is like watching a well edited video with nice effects but with crappy audio or the video keeps freezing. Is there a reason why SL has such a fickle performance when it runs on wi-fi and is there a way to fix it rather than buying accesories to boost wi-fi signal and signing up for SLGO for other, newer users? If it's needed, I don't mind post my specs if it helps. Thanks!
  21. Hello! A while ago I visited this one area from Leroy (http://secondlife.com/destination/-leroy-) and the place was just a floating island with sunflowers. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact name of the place I visited but I remember really liking the floating island/platform which everything was set on and the sunflowers. I messaged the creator today to see if he could tell me where he got the items from (or if he's selling them) so I could use it for my own skybox. I'm just using this thread as a means of back up if the creator doesn't reply or if someone knows right off the bat and can direct me to the store in which it came from to save time. I am also accepting reccomendations of other floating island platforms but I would like them to be mesh, detialed, and low prim. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
  22. Thanks for your input! Before doing this, I use to rent a skybox. However, the problem with that was I had to put most of my effort(and prims) into keeping my home from looking like it was floating in the middle of nowhere. So, instead of decorating the house, I had to decorate a landscape first. Overall, It was pretty fun but, if I had just kept to owning a house and what's INSIDE rather than outside, my prim count would've been much lower so that's what I'm doing now. Search has been so-so for me when looking for land. It's either the land is too close to people or a community (with ugly land) or the price is too high for me. The 1000L budget is just my ideal, if I have to raise it up a bit, so be it.
  23. Hello! I'm searching for a piece land/house which I can rent and pay a landlord monthly. Overall, I'm looking for a place that already has a home placed in the area but not furnished. However, if you only havethe land, that's fine too. I would like: the piece of land/house to be isloated on like a small island preferably. Other suggestions are encouraged but I do not want to rent a skybox. At least 250-300 prims to my use. Around $5 USD per month so, around 1000L.(Price and prim use can be negotiated) Those are more the details of what I'm looking for in price but the main things I'm looking for is small and isloated so if your land can fit that description, great! However, if the land is still distanced but has some means of being near a community, larger piece of land, that's fine. If you're interested, please send me a message in-world and I'll try to respond as soon as I can. Thank you!
