  1. Has anyone seen a Lab Gab announcement where the participants were not listed in the announcement?  This is very strange. Was LL unsure who would be interviewed (as in available) for the Lab Gab?

Ah, that's the SL economy (not LL gross income), right?

I have seen SL's gross revenue as around $80 Million/yr. but their Net income was estimated as $8.5 Million, as stated above.  LL has to pay their employees, the Amazon Cloud, and their legal staff, and their generous benefits, from that gross income.

  3. Because bot spammers move on until they find a group that works for sending.  They are as affected as anyone, but are more persistent, and don't care if one group is not working, because they are auto sending in dozens of groups.

The problem is on your end, probably your inventory, or your region.   That's why alts can send and mains can not.  Group chat has been broken for about 10 years.

PBR has more priority.  If SL would charge you for sending a group message, It would get fixed quickly.

How can i get it to stop asking and just play things?? I don't want to have to "Allow always" for every individual place. I tried turning on all the settings in Preferences > Sounds & Media but still does it,

Check "Allow audio streams to auto-play", and uncheck "Enable media filter."

    What Is Second Life's Revenue?

Second Life's annual revenue is $8.5M. Zippia's data science team found the following key financial metrics about Second Life after extensive research and analysis.

Second Life has 270 employees, and the revenue per employee ratio is $31,656.

Second Life peak revenue was $8.5M in 2023.  https://www.zippia.com/second-life-careers-930924/revenue/

Not sure I believe this estimate from Zippia.  I have seen higher annual revenue estimates.  I assume those 270 employees include their contract workers, eg the Moles.

Does anyone know why music on my home and in clubs will randomly stop, but when it does I can still hear sounds

What kind of sounds? Your viewer has a mixer that can mix Object sounds, Streaming Music, Media Music, Ambient Sound, and Voice too if activated.  Turn all the volume controls but Music down by moving the Sliders to the far left.  You should not hear any sounds if the streaming music is interrupted then.  Media channel is a common source of sound if you don't have it blocked.  Dropouts from streaming music are common, depending on the quality of it's net connections to you.  That can happen anywhere in the network chain.

If you Mute the Master channel, you should hear silence as well, unless sounds are coming from another application outside of your Viewer such as your Browser.

  8. At least the PBR Midday settings BOTH look better than on a non-PBR viewer, for face shadows:

    bab2ff614a0379d283dd6c28337cc32d.jpg

This is how many viewed faces with No shadows and the old Midday default, for years.  Some club point and ambient light can help a little, but this is why Facelights are still in use.   Add shadows to the Midday setting, and the hair shields the face, but it is then too dark.

Next two are on FS PBR viewer.  First is Midday (Legacy), and second is the new Midday. Shadows On in both settings:

    New PBR Midday:

All shots outdoors on a mainland mountain top. No external lighting except Midday Sky EEP's. AO was off, since I like sharp shadows.  BTW system head from about 2012, body and head skin also from same Head creator, on a Mesh Bento BOM body from 2021. No neck seam, as old full body BOM skins matched the heads perfectly.

Of course no materials back then.  Use tattoos, and water drops if you are sweaty.  No Vaseline bodies.

  9. A smart club owner won't hire anyone to rebuild the club with PBR materials.  They will avoid PBR, use the same point lighting the club has always used, and maybe, if they even know how, set the EEP to a Shared Environment that looks like it always has.  The "cool" clubs that want a shiny PBR disco ball and greasy floors will lose patrons using their Mac laptops.  Although the clientele in some of these light show clubs are too stoned to notice anything different.

Old wood in classic club builds does not shine or reflect anything but  dust.

  10. I have always wanted to know where I live, in RL and SL.  I guess Geography is no longer taught in schools.  No wonder nobody gets along. Living in isolation is not how you learn about other people.

How many can name all the SL continents that make up the mainland?

I live on one of those private islands, in a sea of isolated islands.  I am a west of Heterocera Atoll by a long shot, and Zindra (Scarlet Veil shown) is stuck way way out East, far from anything.  The kids can't paddle out that far, I guess that was the idea.

  11. I did show the What's Hot Now Category, not Music Clubs - I corrected that later.  What's Hot Now uses 20 avatars as the cutoff for Hot, so that category can change hour to hour, but at least it doesn't send you to a dead venue.  It can go from 40 to 15 destinations depending on the time of day, day of week etc.  I also found it interesting that our club uses 6 registered NPC's in the club (the band), and the What's Hot listing did subtract those 6 from the Big Map region total for our club.

Of course there are hundreds/thousands of other Destinations in SL.  You can find out about them by using Search, SL Events, and the best advertising, word of mouth.   If someone has a small minority interest, making fur skirts from cat tails for instance, they will need to find a group with equally weird interests on their own.

The Welcome Center has a full region, empty now, for the expanded CE.  They killed the zombie shoot em up game region and converted it to the CE expansion region.  Will be interesting to see what will be allowed there.

It's not meant to be a way to find places to actually GO TO.

Yeah that would be too scary for those sensitive Newbies I suppose.  But I think you are right, CE is mainly for minority groups with largely empty regions.  If they want to do something, they can use the Destination Guide.  SL did promote the Adult Boys Town though, which fits into your minority category. The only region with any activity was the Adult Gay Bar.

  13. 6 hours ago, Drayke Newall said:

I am no fan of the destination guide especially given that a lot of the time it contains regions that no longer exist and also the fact that it is a system that you have to apply to and get approved by Linden Lab rather than taking data directly from the about land and applying the description and images from there doesn't help either.

6 hours ago, Drayke Newall said:

As to that button you mention, sorry that is not the destination guide at all. It is a Linden Picked selection of regions that are empty, boring or laggy. They also seem to never change much.

I have no idea what you are talking about.  DId you actually click on Destinations in World/Destinations, OR the Toolbar button called Destinations?  Because you get about 500 places to TP to directly from your viewer (not the web).  What button are you talking about?  When I am inworld in SL I use the viewer to navigate and find locations.  The entire Community Center seems unnecessary to me.

Click on Destinations and you get all these Categories of places to direct TP to, 14 broad categories:

    9b180a547242e36b3b4ba78326028dae.png

Click on the What's Hot Now Category and you get the REAL-TIME avatar count on each club with at least 20 avatars onsite, and a direct TP.  There are 32 destinations for What's Hot Now:

    058aac992571af88ca51810b8f03ff83.png

All at your fingertips - no roaming around regions looking for portals, or a tiny selection of places to go.  I don't know if all these Destinations can be viewed and TPed directly from the Welcome Center.  But why would they need it?  It's all in the Viewer, with one click.

Yes! Instead, most posts are about the WelcomeHub, Mentors, EVERYTHING BUT the actual "Community Exhibition".

Don't Judge A Book By It's Title (Cover).  The OP mentioned mostly Welcome Hub issues, so that's what we have all been talking about.  We all go on side trips here and there, but because of the OP's original concerns.  I guess the title could be changed to "The Community Exhibit AND the rest of the Welcome Hub AND adjacent regions are still f***ed up A Work In Progress".  That's why we are still talking about it.  Plenty of great ideas here, and we even found a bug that nobody thought was a bug, when two portals had different permission behavior, only because they were sitting next to each other in the Welcome Hub area.  The LR and PQ portals have both been like that for years, at the Linden Portal Parks, and it took the Welcome Center to find this really serious [sic] bug.

There are plenty of ways to earn good money in SL for free (some allow you to earn 100's of lindens a day not the measly 50 a week Linden Realm offers) but, because Linden Lab dont own them or aren't getting paid by some sponsor for it, they dont mention or use them.

A few years ago, LL cut the Quest payout to 25 $L per week.  They also cut the number of identical 12 regions Realms from six to one, and cut the number of crystals that rezzed per hour, meaning more players chasing fewer crystals.  This was done to make the Realms less attractive to "cheaters", they said.  But just adding the Payment Info Used requirement to cash in actually removed most of the multiple alt "cheaters" with no PIOF.  Now there are no cheaters, and barely a reason to play because of the pitiful low returns for your time.

It takes about 5 hours of continuous running and dodging the hazards to collect about 75 $L.  Add the 25 $L Quest time, which is about 30 mins for an average player. So you can make 250 lindens, by playing for 15 hours, plus of course any breaks your body might require.  All for $1 USD.!  A newbie also must pay the $1.95 Buy Fee once, before he can play, to satisfy the PIU rule.  So, to break even, you would need to play for 30 hours, over several weeks.  After that if you have 5 hrs/week (more like 6 hrs with health breaks) you can earn 100 $L/week, or 430 $L / month. Assuming you always play every week - no time off for you. Is 40 cents/week for 5 hrs of work a good deal for the SL economy?   SL needs to find a realistic way for new residents to earn lindens.  Right now their answer is Just Buy Lindens with your dollars - SL has no use for residents that cannot add US dollars to the LL balance sheet.

Don't know if it's still around, but there used to be a 'dance island' or something venue that had 24/7 DJs and all the welcome hubs would send me to it so I had always assumed it was linden or mole ran

Dance Island is still there, and mostly dead.  It is not owned or run by Lindens or Moles.  No successful club has been run by Lindens, they are not in the music business.  Dance Island flies flags from Italy and the Netherlands.  It is euro based and only has DJ sets in the US morning hours. No DJ's are signed up for any sets after noon SLT, until about 8am SLT.  There is always a good reason why clubs have no takers for prime time hours in the Americas.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1szENjWmJK33-qudX6kvaKFxiUZleJdtXcOYcN2KQshE/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&hl=en_US&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Most DJ's are not interested in playing at a venue where the crowd does not tip.  That would apply to the newbie crowd at MoTown too.  LL will not stream web stations.  They don't want to pay the web music streaming fees for using a legal web station.

For PaleoQuest, though, they're using an ordinary experience, "PQ2015", not enabled for all residents. Hence the scary dialog for portal access, I guess. Maybe this is all still part of what Quartz meant by the "fix… in QA at the moment" so maybe the WelcomeHub portals eventually won't need the scary permissions dialog.

It's not clear who or why some Experiences are added automatically, and some are like PaleoQuest, that gives you the scary popup.  Smaller groups often have the popup , but larger ones do not.  Firestorm Experience is automatic, but BoysTown gives out the popup permission before entering.  Has nothing to do with region Maturity Rating, or Group ownership, or anything consistent.  The ones with the popup allow you to Forget or Block the Experience, and auto perm ones have those options greyed out.

The SL Knowledgebase is of no help:

Most experiences automatically prompt you to join the experience the first time you interact with them. When this happens you receive a notification informing you of the permissions you will be granting to the experience, and four possible responses:

But "most" do not auto prompt.  :S

Honest question from a committed non-gamer: What would new users of the mobile viewer expect of SL's embedded games such as Paleoquest?

I think playing Paleoquest as it exists now would be very difficult on a mobile viewer.  It is a game of precise jumping, hidden hazard avoidance, and exact timing.  Even with a wide screen, you need better movement tools than a touch screen.  Actually the game is difficult to play with the SL Viewer, because of the lack of Quickjump, a feature in most TPV's.  The same is true for Linden Realms.   I have tried to play Paleoquest with the SL Viewer, on a fast gaming computer with wired mouse and keyboard.  It was not fun, but possible with enough practice.  Everyone I took there to try to play said "get me out of here" the first time they were stuck in quicksand and being eaten alive by flesh eating ants.  The plants are just as hungry.  It's a game for experienced gamers.  The only incentive is the 50 L$ you can get once a week for completing the five quests.

Once you get enough practice, maybe in 2-3 months of playing, you can get thru all the quests in about 30 mins.  Less if you get a hints and tricks sheet, since the game provides no guidance at all to routes within a quest.

No, you're right, we should make Second Life as scary for those not familiar with computers and full of as much technobabble as possible. That'll show those new users for trying our old technology. How dare they expect things to just work. You're a genius! You've saved Second Life!

You are too generous :)   I only saved the scaredy cats from askng firestorm support if they were just hacked, assuming once they see that scary popup they will leave SL on the spot.

If you think that popup is scary to newbies, try to play Paleoquest and see the mean warnings you get when the game thinks you are cheating.  One threatens to ban you from the game, and possibly take action against your brand new account if you continue to cheat.  But it's almost impossible to cheat in Paleoquest - but jump too high, or sit still too long, and they will send you to the back shed for a spanking and a nasty worded warning.  It will take you about 5 mins to walk (running and flying not allowed) to get back to where they booted you from.

Watch the Paleoquest video next to the Portal in the Welcome Center that Magellan Linden narrates. He warns about you "whiney little explorers" and how hard it is. This is not a game for sensitive newbies scared by a popup.
