  1. You have some really good point there! I always assumed that most people view SL with the camera behind their avi (don't we all want to see the result of time and money we spend on our avatar! ). I'll take your advice to build to my own avatar scale and let that be my target audience. I guess I have to make a choice anyways and building to my own size means I have a constant reference around. I agree it's easier to build larger type buildings because you can keep the scale more constant over the whole build. I tried to find the lowest ceiling height that would still work with the default camera position and ended up having 4.05m ceiling height which isn't to bad in my opninion.
  2. That's the same way I thought. I took an average of 1.80 from RL and compared that to my own avi (2.19m) and rounded it off to 120% At the moment I'm building a small modern home so my target audience could be almost anyone. And ofcourse I want to accomodate as many customers as possible. I think a house should always be moddable so that won't be a problem for future customers. But still I like to get as close to a good average as possible. I know I have to have some things out of scale to fit as much avi's as possible like doors and ceiling height, but I try to compensate by getting the smaller details to a realistic scale (such as the doorknobs, mailbox, the stairs, etc.).

    Build scale

I've been trying to figure to what scale to build items for second life. Since proportions are a little out of whack in SL, RL measurements don't translate well to SL builds. When looking at objects made by others I've come to the conclusion that building to RL scale and then scale things up to about 120% should get me a good average size for SL. How do you other creator go about this?
  4. I'm building a house in blender which consist of multiple mesh parts. When I uploaded the whole linkset to the betagrid I noticed that the linkset gets a name but all the individual names of the objects I set in blender all changed to 'Object'. When I upload any of the parts individually they do have the name I set for it in blender. I don't know if this is something specifically to the betagrid since I don't want to waste L$ uploading an unfinnished model to the normal grid. Has anyone else had this happen? Maybe I'm missing something during upload? I found I can give a name for the whole linkset during upload but I can find no option to retain the individual object names.
  5. Also if you layout the UV map a little better, you'll get a better resolution of it it as well! Besides all that, the model looks very good! very nice texture work!
  6. I was just about to post about optimizing the vertices count on this model. I can add one more tip. You don't need to connect the handle to the lid at all. Just make the lid a plane and have the handle touch it. No need to actually connect the vertices.
  7. Caspertech's simplesit also works great and is easy to set up. I use it for all my furniture.
  8. The way to go here is to bake the diffuse, normal and specular maps in blender and then import them into SL seperatly from your model. Then reapply them in SL.
  9. Have you tried to simply delete the faces that aren't showing right and recreating them? There might also be some faces underneath the top ones poking through. I'm not sure but from the first image it looks as if there's a face under the surface between the top and bottom edge of the rounded top part. Had that happen to me when merging objects and with dividing faces.
  10. Allowing residents to rub their own service would be a too great of a security risk. LL needs to be able to protect IP rights and keep L$ transactions secure. If you let residents run their own server software it becomes very easy to rip mesh content for example. So I'd rather not see that happen.
  11. Yes there is and it's called windlight. This link has everything you need to know. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_windlight
  12. Well, how DO you make money in a SL club? Selling virtual drinks? The best you can hope for are lots of tips. Maybe host a payed to enter event once in a while, but that's about it as far as I can imagine....
  13. About a year and a half ago I came back into second life and decided I wanted to start a club. After learning to model with blender, script, texture with gimp, etc. for about a year I had my club finished. It looked great with baked shadow and light and all. Then I realized I didn't want to be running a club. I just loved to build, so now I'm just building things to sell. I love the business side of things as well. So yeah, my club went before the grand opening as I'm sure many have before and after mine...
  14. Upping the tier free to 1024 would be a good and simpler option too. But I think fixing up some of the infrastructure on mainland would make it a lot more attractive for people looking to buy.
  15. As far as linden homes go....they already partly use the prims from the unused land to put a house on your 512m2 and still provide you with the full 117 prims for 512m2.
  16. More people buying mainland property results in hard cash from tier income, you pay your tier in US$, not L$. Abandoned land is lost montly income for LL. Giving up some to sell more doesn't sound like a bad option to me. If LL had to invest in new server hardware I'd agree with you. But A LOT of mainland is abandoned and the servers have to run it anyway...
  17. I only have a very small parcel (1536m2) on mainland and there is only one other parcel occupied (not even a quarter sim) on the sim I'm on. I wouldn't mind LL putting down a nice road leading past my parcel and double my prim allowance. Maybe add a small public park or something similiar. I think mainland is empty enough to pull this off on most sims. It would make mainland look a lot more attractive and usable. I'd love to be able to drive everywhere I want to go on mainland. Maybe add some parking space for vehicles here and there... I think in the end this could even lead to more L$ income for LL which would mean a win win situation.
  18. Cards against humanity is the ultimate party game! And it's free in SL as well. Only play it if you're not easily offended though!
  19. I think this isn't such a bad idea at all... There is lots of abandoned space on mainland. I'm sure LL could do some landscaping on some of the sims. putting down a nice infastructure of roads on them and sell parts of the sim as double prim land. The abandoned land is there anyways and I think this would be a good way to get more people to start buying mainland again.
  20. When it's a copy item you can rez a new one. If it's a transfer no copy item you can't. In my experience it'll end up back in your lost and found folder in your inventory sooner or later. So I guess waiting is the best option in such a case
  21. I've had the same problem on a simple mesh plane with the same plane uploaded as the physics model as well. Lots of times I got the message that the owner of the parcel (me) doesn't allow me to rez the object. usually moving over a few meters fixed it. I think I had the physics type set to convex hull, I haven't tried to see if setting it to prim makes a difference. anyone?
  22. I'm from the Netherlands so I use the same format as you. And I do agree the american format is really annoying sometimes I can't think of any sane reason to mix up the order like that. But if he would have read it in the wrong format, the date would be the 9th of march this year so still not 6 days in the future... Ow...it's really too late at night for this
  23. It says 9-3-2014, which is today... Usually when you get this message you can log in again after a few minutes. The system has to log you out first before you can login again.
