Sansar looks exactly like SL just better graphics and clarity.....sure makes you think!

Well, SL is a rather old engine where the surrounding landscape can be altered at any moment. Sansar is a new engine, and the worlds on it are made and  edited in isolation, and then baked into the public version, with the exception of any animated or physical props, the surrounding environment won't suddenly be changing at any moment, it's all static. All the lighting effects and such are baked into that specific form.

The easiest thing to do would be to just turn off the things in groups that are a strain on the system unless the group creator pays a weekly fee for it.
Most of the groups don't need to see who is online all the time or have live chat. A small fee of just 30 lindens a week, same fee if you want to be in search with your place, will have a huge overall effect I think. All I want for my groups is them showing up in peoples profiles, send out notices or let people rez stuff on my land.

Personally, the first thing I'd put on the chopping block of being disabled by default is that land group fee thing, if there's anything in groups that 90% don't use, it's that.

  2. So, with the group limit thing being out of the question now, I do still wonder if there's a way to help ease the system if it's as taxing as they claim.

I still like my idea of letting groups have a optional auto boot system they can configure ranging from having it autokick after 1 year since last log on all the way up to 10 years since last log on.

And perhaps could have it be toggled on automatically maybe at like 5 years for any new groups made

I've been saying for years MP should be selling for Premium only. Free accounts - browse, then buy inworld

Two-fold - stops all what you say, PLUS would galvanise inworld land usage for stores.

While I can understand the sentiment behind it, I'mma have to give a big ol No to that

A premium requirement would effectively gut probably a good large half of the current MP, myself included.

Perhaps some sort of middle ground like maybe new stores would have a one time fee of 1000L to make?

The inactive accounts won't lose groups, they'll stay at 42. They'll only go down to 35 if the owner logs back in and wants to join a new group badly enough to ditch 7 + 1 groups.

Unless I'm missing something here, this will penalise active basics without doing anything about the bigger problem of those already inactive.

Would an awareness campaign asking group owners to prune their groups help? There's a way to turn off the thumbnail pics in group chat, a friend helped me with that and it did improve things. Would LL consider dropping them altogether?

If user count in groups is a concern, perhaps this is a good chance to give groups a new feature to prune out inactive members, "If user hasn't logged on in so and so years" Personally, if such a option was present, I'd set it to like maybe 4/5 years, a pretty reasonable amount of wiggle room I feel. While those like @Jo Yardley would be able to set it to 1 year.

Basically it'd be a win win, group owners that want to, can prune out the inactives of what ever specific amount of years they fancy, and it'll steadily take off some of the load of groups for LL.

Perhaps in a more bold move, they could have it automatically apply to all groups and default to 10 years. I'm sure that'd help flush out a good handful of the most ancient of dead abandoned accounts from the many groups. Obviously of course, if they did that, would probably need to have it slowly roll out so not to overload with a sudden mass influx of accounts being kicked from groups.

Folks apparently don't remember back in the bad old days of SL, when group numbers were limited to 25

Actually, 25 was a increase. Was around 15 at one point, I can't recall if it was lower than that.

Groups used to only have two roles as well, Admin, and Members, they've come a long way since.

One thing for sure, this is has certainly be one of the least favored updates in awhile, Only one good news, that largely only matters to land baron sorts at this point and the few people willing to invest in the upkeep, 20 bucks less or not. For the vast majority, the only thing this change brings is a reduction in group slots, and no other benefit.

Just fyi, many of us use the MP as a catalog and make our purchases in world.  For me, personally, no inworld store? No sale. The exceptions to that rule are slim to none.

That seems a bit petty, probably only like 10% of the stores on MP have a inworld.

How will this work with the mesh bodies out now that I'm working on? That's my confusing part to me.

Basically you just wear the texture as a skin and just link the body to the proper slots, and it'll just apply the body texture onto it.

Now granted, if your mesh body in question isn't using the standard SL body template, existing texture clothes and other layerables obviously won't match, but you can still use those things with texture clothes and what not that DO match the bodies specific UV.

in particular, the Daz3D model is done in quads and the Legacy body is in triangles that don't correspond with the Daz3D quads and some of the triangles are laid out in some weird "watermarking" geometry.

Well, the TMP body is most likely originally in quads as well, but when 3d models get put into games, they tend to be turned into tris.

What about basic posing software? I tried DAZ studio with the mesh second life avatars provided by that link,  but I was unable to actually move the joints. It was like the avatar was one connected piece, and when I tried to rotate like an arm or leg the whole avatar would rotate instead. I didn't get an option to select individual joints.

Sounds like you forgot to put it into pose mode, or what ever they might have that named in Daz.

At least in blender, when you have a rig selected, there's three options, Object mode, which is the default where it's just treated as all solid stiff item, Pose mode, which of course is how you animate and pose the individual bones, and then edit mode, where you well.. edit the bones.

we are kinda in a holding pattern at the moment as we wait for LL and for what BoM body designers will offer us. From what I have heard all the established body designers are working on BoM bodies, so is going to be quite interesting what they come up with technically

For anybody that's selling an avatar body using the standard SL body template and what not, it's pretty straight forward to set up from my own lil experience tinkering with it.

Those of us with non standard though gotta be a bit creative, but the system is still usable for us too, just won't have the benefit of existing texture clothes and what not.

Peeps would have to make custom tailored texture clothes and markings, tattoos, etc for the specific UV of the model in question, but it's doable!

Apparently they are also requiring RL information from creators to share their dev kit and saying they have a partnership with Adobe (which doesn't seem to be true).

Considering a good majority of content makers on SL use blender, seems like a rather useless bragging rights on their part.

That partnership with Marvelous Designer Linden Labs has for sansar, now THAT's a bragging right.

Yeah the shopping experience was... odd. Very odd. I agree to that. Also funny how Belleza takes the most VRAM.

As horrifying as those vert numbers are, texture memory can play a bigger role, and the bel used for that snippet apparently has 19 of em.

Though it's not the textures that will make the entire game freeze if you try right clicking on a body, and when there's more than one of those carelessly subdivided monsters together, that high density can still cause issues.

I will give em credit though, having seen the vid linked showing the deformer thing in action, that probably required some heavy amount of scripting trickery to get it to work, and probably the only excusable feature for having it tethered to outside servers, but then that still goes back to the other questions, what happens when those servers are no longer available?

The issue is that you're losing sales from those who might buy the product had this person not rezzed it in their home for them to use as long as they like.

I would report the person but I don't see how it's breaking TOS so don't see how we have any recourse short of banning the person from buying anymore products from us.

Well, surely someone will eventually want to redecorate or move stuff around. Can't exactly do that with some strangers junk unless this person is just giving mod rights to hundreds of people.

  13. I'm honestly surprised they still exist and even got their own "newbie island" of sorts linked to the Portal Park. They were all but abandoned the last time I stumbled back across em since they were quarantined from the rest of SL.

I do share the confused amusement at slot machines being called "Skill gaming" as there's none of that going on at all in RNG based things.

  14. Would be nice if there was a way to have like a blacklist of stores and/or keywords that automatically get filtered in search without having to rely on NOT in the search bar.

I'd probably use it to filter out gacha named items and resellers the most personally.

Are you making this avatar and laying out the UV map yourself? All of the body slots are 1024 x 1024 - you should be able to use the same channel the ears and tail with a texture that big.

Well, already did the UV and textures before hand, I made em have different UV's so they can be used with other stuff if people wanted to. But I suppose that is an option if I really wanted to

  16. One downside of this stuff though is, there's only so many slots on the body to attach stuff to, Lower, Upper, Head, Hair, and Eyes. My avatar I been working on would need 6 slots to be fully linked up to it, the whole body itself, head, ears, tail, eyes, and the mane.

The two oddballs out for me atm is the ears and tail, and the only free slot I got left is the lower body. I know there's the auxiliary slots, but I don't wanna hog up too many for just the base avatar.

I know it's in the release candidate phase now, but it would be nice if it was possible to add in some "aux" slots in the skin itself for misc stuff someone might want to be apart of a base avatar.

Nothing is stopping you from using the main body slots normally used for LL UVs to bake textures compatible with your custom mesh body instead.

    I suppose that is true!

It depends on the number of "channels" a complete bake of that avatar would require. In addition to the "Hair" and "Skirt" channels, there are the two new "left arm/left foot" channels and three new "auxiliary" channels. It would mean that anything made for those avatars would need to use the new "universal" wearable type, but the actual UV layout wouldn't be an issue.

Well, I suppose the aux stuff will be handy for non standard bodies then,  though toggling on the BoM thing seems to treat the mesh like it's got a PNG texture on it, making it default to Alpha Blend, and had to fight against it a bit to get it to stay on none, but that might of just been a bit of lag and clicking about too much to quickly.

  19. So, what about those of us with avatar bodies that aren't using the SL body template?

Are we just kind of stuck with the 'onions', or having to find some complicated work around to even make use of this? 😩

    ------------------------------

After a bit of testin, seems like making use of the Hair and Skirt as the source could be a possible way to use em for non standard UV bodied avatars.
