Does anyone else agree? I should also state, it's not only open to Sl residents, either. If you actually read the rules and regulations on Alienware's end of things, anyway. I'm not certain why the lab tacked tidbit along with their post, because it's not true. The first time I saw the contest it was in an email from a friend who entered, and is not an sl resident, at all.

To the OP: I agree and I already noticed that. If someone treats you 2nd class, just don't buy their products. So for me I see no problem. Excluding someone from a contest because of location is hardly treating them like second class. Do you feel the same about all contests? There are contests in other countries held by companies with a worldwide presence that exclude the US. Should we feel like second class because some restriction prevents our participation? I hardly think that's a reasonable response. Should the residents of Rhode Island feel like second class? I mean, they're part of the US and they're not allowed to participate either.

I'll say the same thing I said before. Not fair? Life's not fair... Suck it up, buttercup.

  5. There is at least one place that regularly holds "meditation" classes, meetings, whatever you want to call them. I don't know the name, I found it randomly. I think it's a temple. Anyway, it might be worth checking out, they may be better able to guide you on this. As for the remainder, I would, if you decide to go forth, encourage anyone who attends to take ALL information given with a grain of salt. Making certain they understand you are NOT a professional(don't care if you are in rl, in sl, you are not, period). I would also make certain any information shared, is general in nature. Don't take personal questions and answer them, it places you in the place of a professional, which you cannot be in sl. Ok, maybe you can, but I highly doubt it. I think there are some rl professions that just can't, and won't work, within the scope of sl. Medical fields would fall under that umbrella for me. I also don't recommend doing it all yourself. Then you've turned it from what I believe your goal is, to something entirely different. You, instructing people, is not the same as sharing information on general health and wellness. The latter, I find to be a plus, for such groups. The former, however, is, imo, better reserved for one on one instruction or treatment(again, something you cannot legally do in sl, I don't believe). Alternative therapy access is not something you can legally do within sl, either. So I'd scratch that off the list. Talking about it, is one thing, offering it, whole different ball of yarn. Fantastic idea, depending on how you bring it to fruition. I know there have been, and probably still are, a number of places just like you describe. I'm not certain how well they do, or have done, but I know they exist. Do a search and wander around the grid some. You might find you can better help by joining one of the already created places. Or you may find that they can give you better insight as to what the attendees are really there to do, learn, whatever. My biggest point, and it will make me seem like a cheap **bleep**, but I don't care, is to not charge for these "services". It's not a service you can actually do legally as a professional and as such, I don't think you should charge. Sharing information should never cost, even pennies. Considering there are places something like this can be done without it costing you money, there ought to be no cost for attendees. If you choose to spend money to bring about this enlightenment to sl, it should be on your own dime. If people appreciate, they'll be willing to help out of their own accord. If you ask, you'll turn people away that may otherwise benefit from the information.

I have seen them show up within 5 mins were my property was involved in a zombie shootout that another person on my sim did not like and reported to abuse. Governance team showed up and administrative kicked my Wife without asking any of us what is going on. But on same merit on another parcel I own a owner that does not log on anymore got hit by a griefer with open build and has junk fling across 2 Sims YET it has been over 40 hours since filing abuse report after another. Now I contact live support and they tell me they can not contact anyone on the governance team and I have no way of tracking an abuse report. So in other words if I am getting ignored I will never know. Other than the junk is still floating in and out of my sim. This to me is a massive failure in customer support especially the amount of money that LL charges for tier and prices for land as well as exchange rate I mean what the hell am I supposed to do now especially with a massive failure in customer support is there any ideas of how I can contact them at all? While I feel your pain and frustration, I am quite afraid you're going to have to do what everyone else does, and wait your turn. Some matters are handled more swiftly, because of the nature of the problem. A zombie attack, for instance can(and will likely) bring most sims to their knees if not make them crash. Had you informed the other residents on the sim you intended to do this(well, your wife), it might not have been a problem. Items being rezzed on a sim, while beyond annoying, may not be as pressing of an issue. It is to you, yes, and I understand that. But if the items are not causing any problems that affect the sim function server side, it's simply not going to be handled first above other issues that DO relate to that. Also, it's monday, we're coming out of a weekend. Most staff members at the lab, don't work weekends. So they play catch up. Unles, of course there is something so urgent it HAS to be handled right then and there, issues are handled as they come in and get directed to wherever they need to go. There are other paying customers just like you, just as frustrated, who have also filed reports due to griefers or other issues, sitting patiently waiting for their turn. It sucks, but sometimes it happens that we have to wait longer than we'd like. I'm not sticking up for the lab. I personally believe they have piss poor customer service and have no clue what they're doing. But I can see why having a backlog of reports-which they always do, especially on the weekends, will cause delays. They won't tell you what they do with the report, they're not allowed to. So you'll just have to sit tight and wait. If it's really an issue causing more than an eyesore, you can have others report it as well. That may help escalate the case. If the items rezzed are now on YOUR property, return them. You can do that, but know that they will return to the griefer most likely(if the abyss doesn't eat them) and that may kick the griefer into high gear. The only plus side of that, you might get a faster response on the next attack. There is no perfect solution with the system we have. We've been asking them to fix it, change it, improve it, since the beginning. There is always room for improvement. I'm not so sure they want to, but I still hold out hope they might at some point.
  7. BrianL61 Landar wrote: Long and short of this whole thing is that i have come to understand thanks to all of you that if this is to happen Aley will have to down load the items her self. d-loading the textures and sculpt maps is not an option due to the shear volume she has produced "Several Thousand" according to her and from the volume of work she turns out 3 weeks from concept to beta testing in world I have no reason not to believe her. Thank you all again for the sound advice and input. Prof. Grey If she created all of the items herself, she wouldn't have to download anything. All she would have to do is give you the assets outside of sl to use, with whatever permissions she wants to allow. So, the only work it would require, is her sending those assets to you(email, placing them on a site for file sharing, or some such). The items, aka assets, are already downloaded into sl. Though that bit really has no relevance if you are wanting to export them out, as they can be made available without the need for an export quite easily. Even with several thousand, or more, it could be done, if someone wanted to. That's how a lot of people who use GNU even find those assets to begin with, outside of sl. This is why I don't see a problem with the policy. Because it does not in any way prevent someone who wants others to be able to use their assets full perm, wherever(or even restricted to a specific set of worlds, environments, uses, etc.). Yet it still gives creators a leg to stand on when it comes to content they've created and others being "permitted" to download those assets for any use they choose. I use quotes because no policy could, obviously, prevent copying of assets entirely. It's a cover your own ass sort of policy on the part of the lab.
  8. Jennifer Boyle wrote: Does anyone know why LL restricted export of full-perm items? Before the change, it was understood that releasing something full-perm granted rights to use it inside and outside SL. The change just removed the possibility of a non-creator using it outside SL, even with the creator's permission. Why would anyone consider that necessary or desirable? I don't know where you got that statement from, but that was not the general understanding, by a long shot. It never has been, and never will be. In fact the only people I've ever really encountered that thought this, were people who believe full perm means 100% unrestricted license to do whatever they want with said asset, no matter what.

All restaurants are decoration or at best belong to a roleplaysim to offer a place where roleplayers can play together (but you will find more bars and inns than modern restaurants). Actually there are. My former partner took me to a lovely one on two different occasions called The Arbor. Not sure if it is still operating but, if so, I HIGHLY recommend it. The Arbor is very much still alive and well. It's, in fact, under new management. Having been there in the past, I recently got a NC from them, prices and whatnot. They offer some nice packages from what I see. Restaurants are alive and well in sl. Although there isn't nearly as many of them as one might expect, they haven't all gone away. They aren't necessarily the most money making business in sl, but I am sure some of them do alright, at least. There actually IS a lot more interest in that kind of thing than some people think. The reason some of them don't do as well isn't because people don't want that kind of thing. It's because the owners of them simply do a very poor job of marketing and advertising.

  12. I got booted from the group, for inciting a riot. I didn't realize that was possible in group chat, but I pulled it off. What did I do to incite a riot? I asked if anyone had seen the owner... That was my one and only question and statement made, but apparently it sent others into a fit and it all went downhill. That was a while ago, I'd forgotten about that. If I had known that would be the effect, I would have chosen a much more colorful exit strategy.

Though some would argue that vegans avoid anything produced by exploitation of animals, aka, anything not given willingly. Then again, many argue what a true vegan is in the first place. Semantics, imo. Flesh is flesh, blood is blood, it all comes from animals and consumption of it, is consumption of an animal product, period.
  14. I have had it happen countless times over the years. It's not just the mesh surface, it can happen on any surface, just happens a bit more often on sculpt or mesh surfaces. It's because, for whatever reason, the viewer doesn't seem to be able to define the surface you are choosing. It also sometimes makes things rez in the air, or waaaaaaaay off point, because it seems to believe that was your intended target. It's not specific to any particular viewer and can't always be re-produced with any consistancy. But I know it's happened on most of the viewers I've tried(which is all but maybe 2, actual viewers not text based, of course). I also know there used to be several JIRAs about it, but we know those have gone into the dark abyss of nothingness now. Most of the time, the item does get returned if not in lost and found, it's right back where it came from. The problem is, you usually need to relog for that to happen, and most I have helped with the issue seem hesitant to do that(don't know why, takes seconds). Sometimes a cleared cache is necessary too. I have only actually lost items, for good, twice since about 2008-ish because of this issue. Everything else always shows back up, eventually. Sometimes after I'd already replaced them, though.

  17. EmilyJane OHare wrote: Many of us became child avatars to afford ourselves a modicum of protection under the TOS against sexual advances and material being foisted upon us. That was a major factor in me, who had played an adult for years, changing to a child avi, I was fed up with sexual advances and inappropriate "invites". This kind of inappropriate signage, whether mistaken or deliberate on the part of the store owner needs to be flagged up so that we can avoid such places. As I said, it isn't a case of wanting everyone to change to suit me, its a case of giving me honest information so that I can avoid adult material and not misleading me into entering an establishment that, in real life, I would not allow my children to enter. I have no control over what T-shirt someone wears, but I do have control over which establishment my young children, and I when playing a young child, enter. I do not expect the equivalent to offering a child ice cream to get them into a sex shop. I agree, sometimes I, too am really out of words for what's going on in people's minds... Bolded mine.. Oh bull, no one forces you to see or do anything in sl. Regardless of the age you are rping as, you always remain in full control of your sl. Don't like seeing nudity? Don't go where it's welcome. Don't like advances? Mute, block, ignore. Want to hang around kid friendly and "safe"(the definition being highly subjective apparently) stick to G rated sims. Not moderate, not adult. Yes there are "safe" places in the moderate areas too, but they are likely, as you found out, co-mingled with places that might not be G rated. You can't fault others for your inability to avoid that which you dislike. You say it's not a matter of the world catering to you, but that's exactly how your posts come off. Most kid avs actually seem to understand this concept. This is, specifically, why many areas are created in a G rating. However, there will always be a risk that something not G rated may enter that area. It can be dealt with, if it needs to be, or ignored-which really is what a lot of others do. AR when necessary, block, mute, ignore. Plenty of tools available to help us avoid things we don't like. By saying others ought to fit their sl to your desires, because you choose to rp as a child, you are involving others in your rp. That's not something many accept as reasonable. Other rp areas don't ask the rest of the grid to cater to their whims. This is part of the reason why some people think poorly of child avs in general. Because some seem to believe the world ought to bend over, when they demand. I'm not negating your rp, I understand exactly why some choose it. I think everyone ought to be able to rp however they want in sl. That said, when we choose to rp, we have to accept that not everyone thinks like we do. There are a TON of G rated places that kid avs can go and have fun, with minimal(though always still some) risk of running into content or people they'd rather avoid. No one taunted you with ice cream or enticed you with some promise of complete safety, just by placing out a sign. Even in places that are G rated, there is always a risk. What exactly was in the store specifically that made you, as a child, wander in? If it was merely the sign being placed outside, you've only your own curiosity to blame and can't fault the landowner. If, however, you encountered it because of an ad or promise or something that indicates it is specifically a G rated only store, you might have a complaint. Being that now you've said it's on moderate land, you haven't a leg to stand on. The fact that someone chose to put a children's store on moderate land up the way has no relevance here. It doesn't guarantee or even suggest, the other nearby stores are also meant for children. If someone does assume that, it's entirely on them. The easiest answer, in this case, is the best. Either don't go to sims outside of G rated(and accept that even they, have slight risk), or accept that you may occasionally run across something you don't like, like the rest of us. I wander around the grid a lot. I have seen a lot of things that disturb me. Everything from specific rp, to horribly built designs, the fugliest fashions i've ever seen, extremely graphic areas, and more. I'm the one that wandered in them, I accept that, and if I don't like it I walk away. Quite simple, really.

Correct me if I am wrong but The Lab has nothing to do with this event at all. It is being run by and hosted by Residents. As far as I have seen, LL has been virtually silent regarding the 10th Anniv. Not entirely. They provide the land, or at least used to, I'm not sure on this year's event(I know, big contribution). They do advertise it, just not a ton. They also used to participate a bit more than they do now. It's still not an event put on by the lab for the residents. It's an event by residents, for residents. The lab is involved, but very minimally.
  20. I've seen some done very well, as in the actual work was done well. So it wasn't an obvious fake face on real face. I still don't like them. I find it more than just creepy. I'm pretty sure a lot of the rl photos people use, aren't obtained with permission to use them however someone wants. Like the celebrity or model photos people use. It's so far from unique when you use another person's likeness, with your face. Avatar or not, it's creepy.
  21. The lab doesn't seek out participants for these events. The artists, merchants, creators, etc... seek out the lab. While it would be nice for some to see the best and the brightest, I don't always think it necessary. Sometimes it's nice to showcase the people who, in their own right, are also amazing creators, even if we may not like every bit of what they do or may not even know who they are. Everyone has different tastes and likes. What you find mediocre I might find fabulous. What you find amazing, I might find drab. All a matter of opinion. I, personally, don't believe these events ought to showcase people outside of sl, that would be dumb. How can one showcase a virtual world and all its potential, if the people actually in that virtual world aren't the ones bringing the content to the viewer's eyes? It doesn't make sense to bring outsiders in,like that. I'm pretty sure on that we agree which is why the pictures you see on the main page of the site are nearly always done by residents. Aside from that, my personal opinion on these events is that they aren't intended to showcase the best. They are intended to show, celebrate, enjoy a day wandering about finding new places you've never been and might like to check out. That's exactly what they do. People bring themselves to the events. If anything it's not advertising for sl, it's advertising for the various content creators that take part. In that right, it's actually pretty successful. You'd have to actually ask each individual creator how it helps them though. I probably have a different view on what these birthday events ought to be. I am actually quite glad the latest and greatest trends and fads aren't always present at every freakin' event. Most of them are hideous to me. Just my opinion of course, we've all got them. I don't care about the creator making skins and shapes that look anorexic, the newest modeling agency, brand new mesh feet that will cost your first born, homes most residents in sl likely can't afford, some inworld magazine, the biggest name brands one can find in sl. None of that is appealing to me at events like this. I like seeing the creator I've never met before. I like seeing the products that, while maybe not spectacular, are unique, or at least new to me. Maybe the guy who owns that hole in the wall business is worth checking out. Maybe the itty bitty corner store that doesn't have a sim wide lag fest, might just have clothes I find more appealing. Maybe I'll find a new critter I've not yet seen. Maybe I'll find a group that sounds interesting. Maybe I'll find nothing at all I like and will have wasted my entire day wandering around. You just never know. I am a bit of an odd duck, though. The lab really doesn't put nearly as much effort into these events as the people themselves do. It's been this way for quite a while, it's not new. The lab is also notoriously terrible at advertising. It's definitely not their strong suit. I wouldn't, and don't, expect that to change.

I only know because she turned it into some tirade about how copybot viewers have a valid use. That, along with this thread, seem to be the main focus of her entire existance in sl. 24. Ok maybe I really am just an ass, but, there is no shortage of information for people that actually look. Whether or not there is an inworld tutorial supplied by the lab themselves. There is both information inworld and on the web. It really takes all of a couple seconds in any search engine to figure out how to do things. I want more people here as much as the next person, but the ignorance just astounds me. Yes sl does have a steep learning curve, at times. But there is absolutely NO shortage of information or tutorials, if you actually look. When I started playing WOW(yes I know, no comparison) although there were inworld ways to aid myself, I went straight to the net. Not hard at all to find info. When I first joined sl, in 2005, there was an inworld help, I still went straight to the net. I don't believe people when they say others DID look for information and couldn't find it. It's there and even with absolutely NO knowledge of sl beforehand, you can't miss it with a simple search inquiry. "How to play sl", though most will disagree on the whole play thing, will even bring up information. It's NOT hard. An inworld tutorial was causing more people to leave, than not having one. I agree the lab should do more, but they don't. So others inworld took up the slack, a simple search will help you find them. If someone can manage finding sl, downloading it, and joining, they can manage a simple search engine.

While you may not appreciate names that are critical, how your av looks is exactly what you're asking people to base their suggestions off. The avatar, as pictured, does not look feminine or pleasant in the least. I'm not saying it ought to, either. Everyone ought to be who and what they want. I see a person who is not pleasant to the average person and is probably not very approachable either. I do not see someone named anything remotely feminine, or kind in nature. I am not basing my opinion on who you are, or who you are try ing to portray. I am basing my opinion on what I see. Which is a cranky lady who doesn't like anyone.
