I have now told my friend about the possibilities of getting his old account back. He will try to follow your advice, and hope to succeed. He asked me to send you greetings and a lot of thanks. The thread has been very interesting to read, and I also appreciate all your answers about changing the last names, and to learn about your opinions about it too. I think – if there are about 10,000 new members per day – it will be very difficult for LL to keep inventing different and new surnames contemporary to the others been used for a lot of different first names the hole time. And perhaps some surnames from rl are protected and are not allowed to be used? So probably LL has to make sure that no law has been broken by setting a protected last name on the list. It gives a lot of work. So perhaps also one of the reasons why the old system has been changed is, that before it was LLs problem to find new available surnames - now the new residents have got the problem (job) instead to find themselves a suitable first name. :smileysad:

Thank you Qwalyphi Korpov, I think I got you quite right this time. And great you found that link. It seems that LL still is thinking about doing things better with the names.

You indicated that your friend was once a resident and decided to return. If they did not delete their account OR if they deleted their account within the last 6 - 12 months, they can submit a ticket to get their avatar back. It may not have a full inventory, but I know that it is possible to get one's avatar reinstated if one files a ticket. Good to know Venus Petrov, but he left a couple of years ago, so his account must be totally deleted now.

Qwalyphi Korpov, yes you made that clear, but I was referring to TheresaTennysons answer, about 10,000 new people joining sl every day. Then it is hard to keep up with new surnames I think.

Thanks for your explanations, I understand that it is something technical that is the cause and something about not to put too much data in the server? Yes it is true that new members can find their own unique name to use if they put together a FirstnameLastname in one word, and then use a different display name. But I don’t think it is appropriate with two different names as tags. And as far I know, you can not use the search function to find a specific avatar by the person's display name alone. As a newbie you can - of course - also just call yourself John986766518352 Resident :smileywink:

I don't know about alts, but I guess it would be the same for giving friends rights? You just have to check the small squares besides the name of the particular friend in your profile, and he now has the rights to build, edit and so on. It is more simple than to make a group, I think.

What was the idea of closing down the options for choosing surnames for new members ? Now all new members have the same "surname" (Resident)? I liked the time much better when I started in sl, where we all had different surnames, and could choose from a list. My rl friend has had a break from sl and wants to come back. He says it is almost impossible to find a name, that isn't already occupied. He sat for over half an hour and has given up for now to join us again.

It is very interesting to learn from your replies. If I buy an apple I have to spend 100L$. But of course the price is more easy to compare proportionally if you know, that a minimum wage is 756.800 L$ per month, but then we have to pay about 33% in taxes to the State of that amount. Internet is about 8.000 L$ per month. It is rather funny to think, that I can rent an apartment in sl for two weeks, for a single apple :-) To buy a hole region of land in sl, is rather too expensive for me in tiers to LL though.

I think it is great that sl is for everyone all over the world. And I think it is great that all people with a pc just can join and take part in this world for free. But I can’t help wondering however, that 100 linden$ for some of us is “just a grip in the pocket”, while it for others can be a lot of money – depending which country you live in rl. Just for interest, and without you need to “reveal” where you come from, I think it could be nice to know, for example, what you can buy or not buy in your home-country if you should change 100 L$ to the currency of your land. I can begin by telling, that for 100L$ I can’t even buy a beer, or a newspaper in rl. If I want to buy the cheapest beer at the supermarket, I have to pay 150 L$ + deposit for the bottle 100L$. A simple newspaper is about 400L$. Sunday a bit more expensive. So, to participating in sl is equal for everybody, but to afford buying things in sl is not equal to everybody at all, I think.

Try to re-install sl, or try first just to change to another hair-base. Sometimes a change of hair base is all you need to make your ava show up the right way, instead of being a white egg :-)

Perhaps griefing also is about having some talents, that can't be used for something constructive. I once went for a lonely walk in a nice forest, when suddenly I was griefed. The griefer made me shout a lot of nasty words, and I could not stop it. Words I would not ever use myself. I had to tp away and relog. Afterwards I thought, what a shame that griefing person did not use his/her talents in a constructive way instead. But perhaps there is no place for him/her at the labour market, and the person instead in his/her anger got destructive, programming griefing situations for others in the greatest virtual world on the Internet? Do you follow me here?

I wish there was some more clothe in sl, that just doesn't glue to the body. Some jackets or jogging-clothes, that can be worn without looking like "body-paint" :-)

Casandra Kumsung asks: This was just being nasty. Why do they do this? To what end? Just do not understand it. My answer is, that people who feel bad about themselves or their lives, who have grief in their own life, just want to transfer this grief and bad feelings to another person. "If I am not happy - you should not be either" Just my five cents of guess about the reason, why we have to deal with those griefers, in rl and in sl too.

No Tamara, I read RoxanneLoarine's comment carefully and I can't see she is talking about buying linden$. Where do you see that? She is talking about getting linden$, not buying, as far as I can see :-)

It seems to me that some people forget, they also can buy lindens from LL? You don't have to work or camp for getting linden$. If you can afford to have an PC and be connected to the Internet, I would think that you also can afford to rent land for 150 L$ a week. - Or you can rent skyboxes starting at 50 L$ a week :-)

Malanya, thank you for the explanation about how things work in the inventory, when all ones stuff is returned by others. I have been here since 2007, and I did not know :-)

About the part of loosing furniture, I am very sorry that I have accused another ava to do that. And I apologize for have been angry about it. Something very weird had happened since my last comment . One of the avas who had lost their tenancy, rezzed a random object afterwards at his new land, and all the missing furniture got rezzed at the same time. So it must have been some technical error that have cost this, instead of fraud. I do - however - still think, that to make some tenants who have payed a lot of tier, just suddenly be homeless without refund or warning, is fraud. About talking of sl as a game, of course there are several and different meanings of what is in the word "game", and how each members expectations of their "stay" in sl are. For some people sl is a very serious place to spend their time. Some uses sl as a rl (second) life, because they can't get much out in rl - diseases/wheelchairs perhaps - and some think that sl is just a light supplement to their rl an hour or two a week. There should be a place for both parts :matte-motes-grin:

Answer to Perrie Juran: It was not my intention with this thread to discuss this specific example of fraud. The case is very banal, and all of us old avas know, it happens all the time. But I will tell you anyways what happened: Some people rent some land, the owner vanishes, and suddenly they have no home, no land, and the money they paid for renting the place has vanished into thin air. When their objects were returned, some purchased furniture is now missing (no, not in lost and found or elsewhere in the inventory) – strange all the freebies are still intact(?). Same day, a “new” owner buys the land and starts again to rent out plots. A “new owner” that is pretty much alike the previous one. Of course you just can become a premium, the first moment you join sl, and buy your own land, instead of renting it from others, but that is not the issue in this debate. I am just tired of there is absolutely nothing to do about those frauds who scares new residents away. We need new residents to keep the place alive, so we all can continue using it. To JeanneAnne: I don’t consider sl as a game. In a game there is always some competition and a price to win. I consider sl as a place, where you interact with other human beings (with feelings) that you don’t have to defeat all the time. To Amza Hydraconis: Well spoken, just my thoughts exactly.

You are right. But on the other hand, why spend time on a game (is sl a game?), if it doesn't hit your emotions in different ways? I have never been cheated myself inworld, but I hear about other people who has, I also hear about people felling in love and people who become very close friends in sl - or enemies. So in my opinion sl is not just a game, but a place where you deal with other human beings in many different ways, and this we shouldn't forget.:matte-motes-smile:

You have never been frauded in sl, but you know all about how it feels - or how other people have to feel about it? I think that frauds and jerks in sl and in rl are making the world a colder place to live in, but you do not care? It is all right, but I do care.

People get cheated by other people in sl, and I think it is a shame that honest people need to have such experiences inworld, and can’t do a thing about it. My friend has just lost a lot of money and some furniture to a fraud, where she rented some land. It is very sad that new (and old) residents in sl have to deal with frauds and jerks, and just have to accept that, without the possibility to complain about it anywhere. I also understand that Lindens cannot deal with all personal issues inworld, because it is too difficult to judge in all the cases. But it is still rather sad though, and I am afraid it scares new residents away from this place. Just some thoughts I needed to share with you.
