  1. I'd heard about Eduverse on Thinkerer's blog, and through some of my groups,  but hadn't visited the Second Life site before.

    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/VWEC Eduverse/194/143/30

It looks like a great gateway for new residents and has a lot of useful information for new avatars, but wonder why it is not getting more attention.

We purposefully didn't make anything like shrines with torii, pagodas, buddhas or temples... because using such items with important spiritual or religious significance improperly or as decoration without proper reverence would be disrespectful and insensitive.

I will miss places like the Temple to the Mole Gods. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Shareta Osumai/172/227/112

  3. Thank you for sharing your art and magic. You have created perfect environments for taking snapshots under & over water.

It is amazing what you have done with an ordinary houseboat parcel. I look forward to seeing what you create in the future.

  4. Nothing to see here - just move along to the next comment.

When this video was first posted, I could not find a captioned version so I was not able to follow along very well. Now that I found it with closed captioning I took the time to sit down and watch it all the way through.  My notes, in no particular order. These are just my own personal views, and I'm sorry if anyone thinks they are confusing. My super talent is "ignoring the obvious".

    - Without true lip-synch avatars should keep their mouths shut. It would be more canny.

    - I would like to see more close-ups of the tools discussed, less of the avatar.

    - I was glad to see the avatar was dressed conservatively.

    - Closed-captioning I saw was fair, but Linden Lab might be interested in doing their own subtitles to avoid viewers using closed captioned versions seeing text like "drost distance" and "seduction destination videos".

    - Torley's videos were shorter. Does the current generation have longer attention spans?

    - Now I see why everyone was complaining about the suggestion that you should de-render everyone else at a shopping event. Me, I just try to wear a classic avatar when I go to a crowded shopping event. I have poor navigation skills, so I bump into things and people a lot. I do like watching what people wear to the shopping events, though, although at first my viewer shows them all naked.

    - Some tools (Advanced viewer) and phrases (alpha) seem perhaps a bit advanced for a video focused on newcomers.

    - I read a mention that there were time stamps showing what subjects were covered at different parts of the video. Couldn't find it.

Note: I am using Firestorm Viewer, but I am glad to see that the SL viewer is being improved, and also applaud the fact that The Lab is making an effort to make SL more accessible to newcomers. The Destination Guide has improved tremendously, and this video project is a worthy project and I look forward to seeing future videos and improvements.

Suggestion: Perhaps there could be very short videos discussing just one or two toolbars, and have a link from that toolbar to the video?

    toolbarbuttonfull.thumb.jpg.ec471b8f2890baa616de4dbc1d7e7c6f.jpg

Toolbar with all the options showing.

    Toolbarwithdefaultsremoved.thumb.jpg.944082252174cd0527adfa531663aac8.jpg

Toolbar with the default tool items greyed out.

Another suggestion: Just a video on the basic camera controls. Strawberry takes wonderful photos, and perhaps a separate video on how she does it.

  5. I unpack with multiple inventory windows open. One window will be set for 'recent' so unpacked items are easier to find and sort.

I am also trying to deal with a terrible 'freebie' addiction by asking myself "do I need this?" before taking gifts. (But you can never have too many earrings or candles, right?)

I periodically set 'sorting times' and try to sort by category. Setting one inventory window to 'sort by name' can help you find duplicates.

When items come in a folder whose name has nothing to do with the contents, I try to rename it ("Gift from 'Barbi Shopkeeper'" becomes "Ugly sweater with HUD that doesn't fit any of your bodies but you might get that body in future")

    I accept that I am a hoarder.

Depending on the quality of the courses for "advanced learning and building", I think this could be a good thing.  In fact, I think it's a LONG-overdue thing.  LL should always have taken responsibility for teaching SL at all levels with this sort of program.  So, congratulations LL!

But I think this announcement would have been MUCH more graceful had it acknowledged the resident-run universities that stepped into the vast knowledge gap over time, and still offer inworld in-person interactive classes where actual humans answer actual questions.  The two I know of are:

    BUILDER'S BREWERY

    CALEDON OXBRIDGE UNIVERSITY

    ....

Don't forget Happy Hippo, Dreams, Virtual Ability, Ross Infohub, and all the other places that work inworld to help residents. I will assume that Linden Labs (or whatever we call them these days) would have sought input from these groups, but you never know...

They could check the forums/reddit/Discord/etc...for 'questions most commonly asked about Second Life' and work from there.

  7. This is my place on Circuit la Corse in Celchu. I bought a 1024 roadside parcel and then I added  1024 by buying part of the abandoned land behind me, making the parcel 2048 in total. The ground structure is

DecoStarF by RAG 142li,  and the skybox is Spargel & Shine Casupolo Giana 174li w/o courtyard (I made a low-prim platform).

Still a work in progress. Tier is 0, as it is supported by two Premium alts. I am having to decide today whether to keep a third alt so I can expand parcel.

Furniture sparse until I have put up all my Tourist Information posters.

  8. A Possible? - Trompe Loeil is currently offering its Darby Modern Cabin to Trompe Loeil Superfans Group* members for $L50. Included is the Kitchen Module, which is 13 x 8 x 4high and 21li.  I'm thinking some of our talented residents might be able to make it fit into a Newbrooke. (I almost got it to fit into my Ravensburg Chalet).

The Cabin itself is a very nice take on what I have heard called a "Farnsworth" house but would not fit in Bellisseria.

  9. I was at the Kiyomizu Shopping Mall Hunt in Nepessing http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nepessing/58/207/106 and the very first shop I visited had an amazing number of freebies, some of which might be useful in Bellisseria:

Four Moai Easter Island Statues - 1 prim

The hunt prize (look for the little cat) was seaweed in different colors - 1 prim

    Also pictured:

3-D Text letter sign which I am told says "Happy New Year"

A stand with a "Mote-man" pose ball and gesture.

The hunt only lasts through April 3rd but the store, Le Chaut, should still be there after that.

  10.

I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of sales events I found on Seraphim SL and other sites for this weekend. This set of Knicknacks at Hilted caught my eye. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/HILTED/159/128/24. The $L60 Happy Weekend set comes with each of the 14 different pets separately, or on a stand, or with just the empty stand.

Full stand, if I'm reading things right, is 8 land impact

The empty stand is 2 land impact.

The pets are 1 land impact each; however, I was able to stretch Snooty Snoot to one meter and he came out at 4 land impact.

With my graphics set to maximum distance but using default settings, there were some degradation of image at about 7 meters away for the smaller items, but the shelves and the enlarged pet were viewable at 10m.

For myself, I see using the enlarged knickknacks as individual accent pieces, or small sculptures.

I didn't have time to look at everything for sale this weekend, but whole area around Hilted was full of interesting shops and builds.

How many of these threads to we need to open and have them closed after the "moles" have personally responded to them?

Just decorate how you normally would and if it's out of theme or someone AR's it and it gets removed then you'll know.  I feel like everyone is going overboard now out of spite.

I didn't want to put in a lot of time and effort into a project that might get AR'd, and I really wasn't clear on what was meant by 'modern'. I notice that the Bellisseria covenant is much longer than it was when I first moved into Bellisseria, and I have faith that rules will be clarified in the future. Having said that, I have decided to hold onto all my Japanese/Asian landscaping items until (I hope) Bellisseria has a theme that it would better fit.

  12. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gebuesch/83/184/29  I have tried to put together information on 'how to buy a parcel on the Mainland'. It was intended to be for new residents who have only lived in Bellisseria, but perhaps it would be useful to others.

Information was compiled from the Wiki, forum contributions, and my own experience.

The newest poster with a notecard is "Bitsy Buys a Parcel on the Mainland".  The web version (of this article only) is at http://thesecondlifetourist.blogspot.com/2022/03/bitsy-buys-parcel-on-mainland.html

What, are you kidding?  You seriously think LL is policing plants now? Or is this a passive aggressive protest?

I noticed someone has a lovely Japanese garden in Seldom Scene.  And why not a cherry tree, if it's normal tree-sized?  Good lord.

You are right, I tend to be passive aggressive, but I meant it as a serious question.

  14. What restrictions are there? I like this mid-century modern remodel in Seattle (except for the exterior color), but is the outside landscaping too extreme? (top image)

Should I instead be looking towards the "California modern' exteriors of this Eichler houses?(bottom image).

Confession: I've been accumulating vintage and modern Japanese furniture for years, and I would like to have a sorta-Japanese garden out back, but I also want to fit in. I already realize that I probably won't get away with a huge blossoming cherry tree, but what about a koi pond?

Perhaps Bellisseria needs something like a 'building inspector' who could OK your remodeling plans before you make a major remodel?

  15. I ended up in Cathcart's Fumble under the surface! I keep getting logged out and there doesn't seem to be any way to abandon the parcel. Repeated teleports land me in the same limbo. And my hat has disappeared! Perhaps this is my punishment for trying more than once.

Later: Once I was able to get out of limbo and explore the new neighborhoods, I have to say that the 'moderns' look much nicer now than they did during the first reveal. I'm also very impressed that with the exception of the one glitch I haven't seen any other problems. I like that you can claim a 1024 plot, but put a 512 house on it to give you more elbow room. Good job, Moles!
