Cute egg basket with brown eggs from Artisan Fantasy, only 25 L for 25ltuesday.

I love 1 li decor, I can use this in any kitchen, but farm/rustic kitchens in particular.

Search your inventory first. I already had it. Previous sale? It can be stretched a lot and stay 1 li.

I think the LOD is ok for indoor use. I zoomed out, and the wire basked dissolved. But for shorter distances like in a room, it works.

The back is almost black/hard shaded. It is maybe not so good if you will see it from all sides. I turned off SL shadows in the second picture. LOD 2.125 used.

I don't mean to be persnickety, but as a chicken farmer's daughter, I would find that egg basket impractical because the opening is too small. I think bucket-shaped baskets are more traditional. Sorry.

No it's not, nobody new is going to appreciate old stuff that doesn't look good. They're just going to think it's a crap platform. Put all that stuff in a mole museum if enough people want  that but get it off the grid.

Who is going to decide what looks good and what doesn't look good?

Here is a 'Mole Build' from 2009. I'd take it over many a modern mesh structure.

  3. Here's one - A Linden Mug. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to steal it. Just found another Magellan not too far away but couldn't get good pics because of the fishies.... ooh! and there's some other neat things nearby. I wonder how many Easter eggs there are at SL20B.

  4. What might have made me quit (If I wasn't so stubborn):

    - Being stuck under the floor of a building with poor mesh construction,

    - Choosing 'wear' rather than 'add' and ending up partly naked,

    - Trying to figure out how to open boxes without wearing them,

    - 0- second orbs

    - 0 - snotty forumites

    - 0 - cliquey resident groups

In retrospect, what helped me was other residents inworld, and forumites who patiently answered all my newby questions, and a few online resources.

And, I should add that, although I have explored a number of other virtual worlds, there is no place like Second Life.

This came up at the Lab Gab with Philip and Oberwolf and I feel they have fundamentally misunderstood the implications.

< bear with me please ! Much of this is to frame the discussion that follows >

Ok, so there is this thing called "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs". The idea being that you must start at the bottom and meet those needs in order to explore items in higher tiers.

Here is a picture... (and more information here if you must)

    jyU1Z7S.png

Obviously this is pure psychology nerd garbage as starving artists exist (to give an extremely simple contradiction). That's not important for this discussion, no need to pick holes in Maslow's pyramid. It's just here to "set the stage".

'The question as asked by strawberry :

"Considering Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and that an avatar's physiological needs are met when they first rez, how this baseline of security frees them to focus on the needs for love and esteem and self actualization, this is not like in real life or mist games that require some struggle to survive and thrive, what do you think Second Life says about human nature?"

    .........

I think Philip has fundamentally misunderstood the implications of Second Life omitting the bottom two foundational tiers of 'Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs'. Yes it is a positive platform for people to explore, express themselves, be altruistic and achieve personal growth.

However, the bottom two tiers of the pyramid are the largest. They represent a defining part of the human condition, they dominate our daily lives and dictate our actions to a considerable degree.

Games will provide these tiers as part of the experience. In Minecraft one must quickly build a home to survive the night. The act of doing that informs activity long after the immediate need to survive hordes of night time monsters has passed. As the player progresses, the home gets bigger, its borders expand, the zombie threat diminishes to the point it's incidental novelty. What's left is one the biggest video game franchises in human history, fun for all ages and easily as much of a sandbox as SL.

Second Life does not present any challenge to users that quality as being psychological or survival. This is the missing piece that causes people to leave so early in their journey here. They join SL and find nothing to do. There is no challenge to be met. No purpose to set them off on their adventure. No experience that allows them to define their starting place.

The need to meet psychological and survival requirements is so baked into all of us, that when presented with its absence, most people .. move on.

This is, in my estimation, why Linden homes have been successful for growth of premium membership and retention where everything else has failed. It presents a facsimile of foundational needs for people to complete. Find a place to call home, and in the process, find a foot hold for their place in Second Life.

Regarding Hierarchy of Needs: "Second Life does not present any challenge to users that qualify as being psychological or survival." I think that learning how to move, communicate, etc...in Second Life is harder than defeating any old Minecraft zombies, thank you very much. If new users leave before they have mastered SL's complexities, perhaps it is because they do not see a worthwhile benefit to staying.

Regarding gamification: Life is a game, so is Second Life. My Bartle is 100% explorer, 53% social, so I'm not here to be social, but I stay because I love to explore, create, learn, and awe at the wonderful things/projects/ideas that come into being in Second Life. I watched the whole referenced interview, and I felt that "building friendship" and "building community" seemed to be mentioned a lot, so I'm hoping LL's vision isn't for SL to become a better version of VR Chat.

Perhaps a placement exam at entrance to determine new residents' preferences? Send them to destinations that meet their needs- giant chat rooms, or orgies, or.....

I hope I haven't wandered into the Room for Arguments by mistake.

Also get rid of every linden mole "contribution" to the mainland that isn't made with mesh. Just delete. They don't have to live with it on Belli so why should we?

Arghh! Then in RL let's just bulldoze Stonehenge and the Pyramids and....sorry.

I'm very fond of all those old SL prim and sculpt builds because they are a part of our history.

  7. At SL20B just looking around at random I found this exhibit, The Four Seasons of Tarot by Honey Heart (with lighting by Caledonia Skytower) to be absolutely beautiful. You can ride one of the horses through the four seasons landscape, and then learn more about the Tarot.

  8. At Shop & Hop DRD's giving out a $L475 gift certificate that can be used for any of their products. Although most of their items are appropriate to their name, "Death Row Designs", I found some items for my alt's Victorian.

DRD Shop & Hop store  is in Forsythia.

    Their inworld store is:

I hope you all enjoy the HyperLag.  And anyway I got enough 'stuff'.

    Happy Anniversary SL.

Your loss. I think the Birthday celebrations get better every year, but I think it is going to be hard to top this year's event.

I was considering, since I am retired, that perhaps I should not visit during the peak times to leave more room for those who still have to work.

I visited the new WelcomeHub area to see what information they had about buying property in Mainland. There was a sign "Land and Linden Homes" with demos of Linden Homes (and perhaps spots for the new 2048's) but all I could find was Abnor Mole's Info Kiosk with links to articles about buying property.

The kiosk was set so that you wouldn't see it as you entered the area. Meanwhile, on another kiosk, a copy of the Bellisseria Covenant was displayed under glass as if it were the Magna Carta.

    Draw your own conclusions.

  11. The SSP thread alerted me to the fact that the new WelcomeHub areas are open. I thought it might need its own thread.

Looks as if WelcomeHub Linden Homes will be connected to Bellisseria by rail.

  12. Found at Vintage Faire at Dainty Rhino until June 19.

Cerridwen Cauldron's  Pitcher Plant Lamps and Sconces $L249 - many colors and options included, 2 to 3 LI each. Scale: Largest lamp is 2.04472 tall. I thought LOD was good.

Eclectica  Curiosities-Edwardian Black Rose Vase three colors $L100 for set 1 LI each

Note: Finding your way around may be a challenge as flying is turned off, but quite a few interesting stores there.

  13. Ways to Improve Second Life: GET THE PERVS OUT OF THE INFOHUBS AND PUT SOME INFORMATION THERE!

    Sorry, I'm still upset -

PERVS: I thought I'd find out what information was at the Infohubs so I visited eight of them*. At the first one I ran into a large group of nude people who were apparently soliciting. I made two abuse reports - one was for ***** and one was for 'obscene' name, but I could have made dozens if my stomach had been up to it.  Curiously, some of the folks I saw at the first Infohub showed up at the third place I visited, which makes me think they change locations frequently. Now, most of the info hubs I visited were perv-free, but the ones that weren't were not anywhere you would want to send a newb.

INFO: The best of them had the four standard "Info" signs -

    1. Gaming/Glytch/Cornfield/Horizons/Paleo Quest/Linden Realms - gave landmarks

    2. Portal Park/Mole Town - landmarks

    3. Sign Up for Premium - link to information

    4. Social Island/Learning Island - no landmarks - Links to a good web article about "The Basics", A link to a good video by Strawberry, and a link to an outdated video about "Getting a Home in Second Life" showing all the fun you could have in your First Generation Premium Home (think Meadowbrook)..

The worst of them had little signage, signage that didn't work, signs with links to the "Linden Blog", or links to Torley videos.

I realize that a lot of these Infohubs are privately sponsored with the expectation that the residents who run them will keep them up to date, but I also know that some of these sponsors are no longer active in Second Life.

What I would like to see added at the InfoHubs: Landmarks to places like NCI, Happy Hippo, Builder's Brewery, Ivory Tower, etc. More information about how to find a place to live.

I have to say that the BelliHub is an excellent example of what other Infohubs should be.

    End of rant.

  14. Just a data point. Tried to help a newb today who was using Black Dragon. I've never used it and I wasn't much help. It seems mentors will need to know more than just Firestorm and The Official Second Life Viewer.

I'm assuming that mentors will have a communication band that they can use when they need experts in using different types of viewers, as well as those fluent in different languages or areas of expertise.

Trying, but not being able to help was humbling - those of you who are volunteering to be mentors are brave. Thank you

I have stuck at cape ekim door. I found a book in the light house and i found a secret passage under the bridge still the whole thing is totally no make sense at all. I'm no sure i jad even trigger the quest or its broken.

Darn - Adam beat me to it!

I was going to say that I believe the 'turning puzzle' by the lower door might be broken, and after a few tries it sends you back to the hollow stone. I watched a YouTube video (can't find it now) where the quester came to the bottom door and cammed in and pressed a button on the other side of the door to open it. I have also cammed to the throne inside and chosen "sit here". Have fun!

  16. Many great ideas above.

I had an idea I suggested to LL  - "If a water parcel becomes abandoned, make it public land rather than putting it up for auction." One of my first negative experiences in Second Life was finding that I couldn't sail on a lot of waterways because they were some other resident's private property. Sorta like clogs in the arteries. Granted, LL would lose some revenue, but I think it would improve the value of Mainland in the long run.

Also one of my first traumatic experience as a newb, (I'm afraid I took it personally), was running into a short-fuse 'security system' and being booted out before I could figure out how to respond. Could there be a minimum response time?

Granted that putting in water channels or bridges between the continents would cost a lot of computer time, how about putting in inter-continental waterways or bridges but charge private Region owners an extra fee to be placed next to them?

re. the debate between @Coffee Pancake and @Katherine Heartsong about how Mentors should look, and the underlying problem of teaching avatar appearance...

This is a HUGE problem. Where I hang out on Welcome Island, I always look as good as possible (while keeping my complexity numbers low so everyone can SEE how fabulous I look.)

I do this because 1) vanity (let's be honest!), and 2) I do want to show newcomers what's possible and inspire them.

But then they ask, "How can I look like you?" and I come up against that brick wall that Katherine mentioned. What I've been doing is 1) show them how to switch between starter avatars, which at least gives them a variety of looks, and 2) hand them a notecard that has landmarks to freebie stores and tutorials about editing their appearance (among other things).  This is a very poor solution, but it's the best I've been able to come up with for the majority of encounters.

With a very few, who are willing to stick with me, ask questions, and follow directions, I can spend a couple of hours and walk them through some of the basics. But it is a huge investment in time; I can only do this once or twice a week.

Linden Lab has bent over backwards to ensure that new functions don't break old content. But they may have bent so far backwards that they've broken SL's back. This enormous, complex thing we lump under the name "avatar appearance", with its mesh bodies, heads, HUDs, appliers, BoM, EvoX, skins, tattoos, eyes, hairbases, AOs, rigged/unrigged, Wear/Add, and appalachicola whibbertyglibs, has become a black hole that's sucking people, especially newbies, right out of SL.

As someone who has been in Second Life for a while, but still hasn't mastered "mesh bodies, heads, HUDs, appliers, BoM, EvX, skins, tattoos, eyes, hairbases, AOs, rigged/unrigged, Wear/Add..."etc... I don't think I would be much help as a mentor for folks who want to change their appearance. I DO like Lindal Kidd's idea of having a notecard with some basic information on it that I could offer to any newbs who wanted it. Any ideas on how such a notecard could be made available for "unofficial" mentors?

Also, this thread has reminded me to try to be nicer to newcomers, both here in the forums and inworld.

  18. In my experience, "World Search" and "Region Objects" (Under Pathfinding) may have distance limits. I would try going up to 4000 meters and looking around as you fly down - I once found a VKC dog up in the sky, and someone's horse at the bottom of the ocean.

Failing that, a Support Ticket might work.

  19. Just to change the topic - there were over a dozen Lindens at a recent event - "Bid the Lindens Bald" - they raised $L736,000 for charity.

It looked to me as if they had put a lot of effort into their coiffures, and some of them were enthusiastically participating.  The ones that got the least bids were stoic about being shaved bald.

It seems to me that Second Life is such a large place that it would be rare to run into a Linden outside of public events. I suspect the ones that are inworld are building things in areas we can't see. Some of them who work online have helped me with different problems  - most recently Mint Linden quickly and professionally helped me find some lost inventory.

Yes, I still have a lot of complaints, but I don't think it is fair to insinuate that the Lindens aren't working just because you don't see them.

  20. I bought land because I wanted to feel like a resident - not just a tourist. There have been a few times when I have not had even a tiny parcel, and even though I could set "Home" to any number of places, I felt homeless.

Also, I enjoy landscaping and choosing or making a structure for the parcel, be it ever so humble.
