I suppose the intended purpose of the new forum will be revealed in time. Perhaps those who are allowed to post there have been assured that interlopers will be removed without a trace. The Vampire Weekend subforum - ah, the bad old days of Vialy, or whatever his name was - had the same sort of profile. It was primed with semi-literate over-enthusiastic postings by pro-fang, anti-garlic forum nonentities who had been LL Marketing vetted - if only - and given "guidelines" on how to post and how to respond to posts, although much of this advice was either not fully understood by the ESLers, or ignored by the hyper-emotional propagandists. Halloween is not too far off. Vialy or whatever his name was did more to destroy this Forum than all of us together could have accomplished. It is still tainted with his touch. I hear he started his own company SCC and is personally in charge of the marketing and complaints department. SCC being of course the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. Is SCC working on a Point of View Gun? I'm sure LL would be a suitable test site.

  5. Hey Tex, why don't you start up a Group called the Forum Cartel, and set up a Hangout on some Group land, and use it to host fairly frequent parties, formal and informal alike, for regular Forum posters? And maybe you could initiate a thread which might turn out to be the longest in SL history and call it something ridiculous like "Just ignore and let this one die". Oh, that's right, someone did that already. It'll end in tears. Or am I thinking of Hippiestock?
  6. My great-grandmother used to say "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything" My grandmother used to say "If you can't say something nice about someone, come and tell me all about it". My mother used to say "If you can't say something nice about someone, make sure you tell the truth". My wife says "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't answer them". My wife trains Customer Service Operatives.
  7. LL has now introduced a new feature regarding displaynames, whereby your displayname cycles - without any involvement by you - through the list of displaynames you have used historically, selecting old displaynames at random and without informing you of the change unless you check your Profile Feed, then sneakily reverting to your current one when you go to check. Those embarrassing one-off changes that you used to call yourself your current honey's private and personal name - yes, I'm talking about you, CuddlyBalls - will come back to haunt you, perhaps to your present partner's discomfiture, but hell, it's only a game, isn't it!

  10. I would suggest that bra and panties should not be a priority. Unless you are going to pretend to be a female.
  11. For at least the last five years I have had NO spam in my emails, and no false positives in my spam dump. I use a freeware filter on Outlook based on Bayesian logic principles, and after just one week of priming it, it has continued to work 100% effectively. I sent myself some sample emails from a junk account using the titles and text of a sample of the spam today, and even without any previous experience of content over-replete with 'Mumbai', 'escort' and 'call-girl' text strings, it identified ALL of them as spam. Get with the programme, LL! ETA Lithium themselves also have a problem with spam, it appears.
  12. Oh, and I didn't even mention Mumbai or Call Girls, so . . . excuse me a moment, there's someone knocking at my door . . .
  13. Qwalyphi Korpov wrote: So I jumped on today to see the posts that were accumulating in the new forum. Nada. I'm almost for sure that I saw one there earlier. So that's a clue about what's acceptable. Or it might have been a dream. An additional tiny thought: The new forum is like this one. It can be about SL or not. I posted in that subforum a completely valid and reasoned opinion on the current status of the attractiveness - or otherwise - of SL to educational organisations, and even made coherent and practical suggestions on how to improve SL's marketability to educators (and advertisers, but that is a different story) which would also have the side effect of enhancing the virtual experience of many participants. But the post disappeared.
  14. I think it would be a wonderful idea for SL to be used to teach people how to read and write English - especially those who erroneously think they already can.
  15. Cats are obligate carnivores, which does not mean that they ONLY eat meat - I believe that only snakes fall into this category - but that they NEED to eat meat to satisfy critical dietary requirements as they can not process plant proteins fo essential purposes. Perhaps they eat flowers because they are intrinsic psychopaths with an instinct to destroy beauty, and they like tinned tomatoes because they look and taste like coagulated blood.
  16. Tex Monday wrote: I don't know why we're still having this conversation... Maybe because LL don't seem to want to either acknowledge the problems exist or to give any indication that work is being carried out diagnosing and rectifying the problems, much less offering an indication of when resolution might be expected, and how many months worth of displaynames are likely to be recycled while undoing what must be extensive corruption.
  17. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: The friends list on the web site is a known problem which I presume LL is working on. May I ask what basis you have for making this presumption? Just because a bunch of workmen leave "No Entry - Road up" signs on the carriageway doesn't mean any activity is taking place to repair the highway.

  20. Canoro Philipp wrote: maybe they do more than than we know. I shall be providing lots of surprises to the Moderators to celebrate their SADness, although in the spirit of their own customary stealth operations I won't actually send them any notification of what I have done; they will have to guess. They should think of it as a Treasure Hunt, so please don't help them if you see something that they might appreciate. The surprises may even disappear between their identifying them and returning to enjoy them. They will, of course, be provided at my sole discretion, without warning or explanation. I am particularly delighted at their continuing prevention of my access to the execrable 'Trending' tab in the Feeds, and even more joyous that the history of revision of my displaynames is being recycled so that readers can compliment me on changes that have passed their zeitgeist. I am also confident that their definition of "harassment" as "logically, clearly, and as the occasion demands, humorously, expressing a dissenting opinion" will eventually be accepted by Merriam-Webster.
  21. I signed up with Coursera over a year ago, and am still waiting for them to deliver the goods on something they promised would be ready last September. Presumably they are subcontracting some of the online preparation work to LL . . .
  22. Madelaine McMasters wrote: Now that I think about it, I might be more skeptical about a lot of things than I was five years ago ;-) Congratulations on your continuing enlightenment; I am sure that Storm will be delighted to hear that eventually you might become a realist - probably on your death bed - assuming you discard those US Government issue rose tinted spectacles.
  23. Sy Beck wrote: They may have seen the light, but only as it flashed past them. The thing about the majority of educational establishments is that they tend to be run by people with some intelligence and have scarce resources. That's why educational establishments have fled to cheaper OpenSim grids or just put sims on a USB stick at a fraction of the cost that LL is offering them even now. SL in comparison offers only a larger population, which is of no significance to educators as they are primarily only interested in their own class cohort. It offers slightly better bells and whistles than OpenSim grids, but still has the same basic tools that educators were quite happy with years ago till LL's pricing policy pushed them elsewhere. I remain unconvinced that this will lead to anything, but a very minimal rise in interest or sim ownership by educators. The bird has flown. Dammit Sy, how come you can get away with direct criticism and a clear statement of the failure of LL when my post that said the same sort of things, but sugar-coated with sarcasm, was stealth-modded?
