  1. Just a cautionary word on trying to use SL on an upgraded Windows 8 computer, especially if it is an all-in-one that allowed SL to run when it had Windows 7 OS...you just might have to bite the bullet and but a midtower desktop in order to run SL again, as most all-in-ones tend not to have room to allow a GPU upgrade. Personal experience...I bought an Acer Veriton Z290G (don't laugh, at the time it was an emergency purchase in a cash-challenged timeframe). Anyway, when this system was a Windows 7 64-bit machine, SL did run on it, not great, but I could do things and interact with online folks. Then, I had the chance to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit for a mere $40. Yes, I was nervous, new way of doing things, the question of if I could adapt to a Start Screen instead of a Start Menu, yadda, yadda. Decided to take the plunge. Did the upgrade, spent about a day flipping out over getting used to a new way of doing things, but them settled down to just using the new OS. Old standbys like Skype, WoW, Office (yes, I also bit on going to the new Office 2013), running tools like CCleaner and MalwareBytes, Nero, scanner software, printer software, network printer, a couple of other games -- all just worked. THEN I tried SL. I thought I was home free when I logged on and started chatting with an online friend. But no...SL barfed after about 4 minutes. I logged on again, and SL strangled after two minutes. Tried a third time...and SL threw up it's virtual hands in gibbering madness - I saw that dreaded message about unsupported driver/unknown hardware. Well, I wondered if I could run Windows 7's driver software instead... found that the onboard card is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, downloaded the most recent-dated one from Intel's website...and discovered that the driver in Windows 8 for that card is marked as newer than the newest one for Windows 7. Got cold feet at this point...I've neither trying running the older driver, nor have I tried downgrading back to Windows 7 64-bit. I DID try installing and running FireStorm, and that proggie suicided even faster that SL's base v3 viewer did. I am just going to have to suck eggs until I can get another computer that I can UPGRADE in more ways than just RAM. Da**it, I actually LIKE Windows 8... *sighs*
  2. Any suggestions on upgrading OpenGL on Windows 7? I wasn't aware that SL doesn't provide the latest OpenGL driver itself. And if 1.2 is the latest provided natively...(shrugs). The packet loss is a separate issue. I just changed ISPs, going from copper-backbone DSL to fiber-backbone DSL, and there is a new gateway/router in the mix I'm having to shake out. But I will investigate the beta software...it might help in my case until the stable version can catch up.
  3. I am a user who, after having multiple crashes of the LL viewer and program freezes of the Firestorm viewers, uninstalled the LL and the Firestorm viewers, scrubbed the left over folders from my drive, then installed only the LL viewer. At this point, I am seeing the "Open File" dialogue block, but it's empty. No file listing, no text at all, just the box and blank list box controls. Then I read the JIRA entry. The Registry code, as presented, was not very clear; I had to match thre previous three lines with the ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers key, and I'm not sure there aren't multiple instances of the key combination. I found two, but the first one didn't have matches in the previous 3 keys. After following the suggestion in the JIRA (and after exporting the parent key as a backup) I tried again to upload a file. Alas...the same behavior was seen...no text at all inside the "Open File" dialogue box, and the viewer going unresponsive when I try to cancel the operation. For me, it's not an option to uninstall SkyDrive...I've been using it as part of my file backup for more than 16 months. So I can't upload any new content to SL until some solution is found either from the SL viewer crowd, or from Microsoft. The particulars of my current primary machine ar as follows, as gathered from Help->About: Second Life 3.4.0 (264911) Sep 19 2012 11:15:02 (Second Life Release) Release Notes CPU: Intel® Atom CPU D525 @ 1.80GHz (1795.75 MHz) Memory: 4086 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: Intel Graphics Card: Intel Pineview Platform Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.14.0010.2230 OpenGL Version: 1.4.0 - Build 8.14.10.2230 libcurl Version: libcurl/7.21.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8q zlib/1.2.5 c-ares/1.7.1 J2C Decoder Version: KDU v6.4.1 Audio Driver Version: FMOD version 3.750000 Qt Webkit Version: 4.7.1 (version number hard-coded) Voice Server Version: Vivox Built with MSVC version 1600 Packets Lost: 303/7,368 (4.1%)
  4. Hello! After experiencing display issues with the latest viewer build, which I believe is 3.1.0.243176, I want to uninstall this build and then install the build from a couple of iterations ago. I was noticing that the viewer would download newer build, then install them when I logged out, so I'm not sure what the earlier builds are called. The display issues are similar to those discribed @ http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/All-prims-rez-black-in-2-7-4/qaq-p/974837 and https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SH-1969. As I don't remember having display issues before landing on the most-up-to-date-but-apparently-buggy build, I would find it awesome to be able to step back a couple of released builds, to one before the display issues cropped up. I kind of wisha person could tell where SL would save the update builds. That way, I could keep the last 5 or 6 builds on my home system, and would be able to roll back on my own. Thanks in advance!
  5. Well, it would seem I would have to whitelist the entire domain of SL's email servers. Or turn off Yahoo!'s spam filters completely. Talk about unsatisfying trade-offs.
  6. Hello, I set my SL account to send email notifications of messages receive offline, sending to my Yahoo! email store. This feature works, but lately, I have noticed that the originating addresses will change, even from the same person sending it in SL. Because the email originating address changes, I can't depend on future messages from a particular person will stay white-listed in my Yahoo! spam mail filters. The question I'm asking why are the originating email addresses changing so often? It's already an almost incomprehensibly long string, so why does it seem that the addresses are now getting randomized? I don't know if anyone else is having an issue with this 'feature', but I certainly am. I've more than a few friends that I'd like to know might be trying to get in touch with me. It is a royal hassle to have to go into my Yahoo spam folder every day to see if it caught 30+ false positives from them, just because the originating email address has changed.
