  1. I'm a compulsive sale/hunt/freebie shopper- because as someone else mentioned, it's so awesome to get something great for free and you can just toss it if it sucks- but likewise my own pickiness about quality(and limited Ls since I work too much irl to DJ as much as I used to)has made my normal shopping slow down alot. I had to MAKE myself splurge on this amazing pair of P10 shoes a couple of days ago; wish I was on my home comp so I could post, they're awesome.
  2. This is correct; the only warning i've ever seen is to not install a new version of Firestorm without completely removing the old one. I mostly use Firestorm now, but I still have Pheonix, and they do not interfere with one another at all. That being said, I second the recommendation of Firestorm. I don't usually try to butt in on someone's choice of viewer(unless they ask my opinion) but Firestorm, even in beta, is the best I've ever used. Once they're done with it, it's gonna be even better. Sorry reinstallling didn't help =( If you're still having trouble today, would you post the exact text of the error message? That might help. Also sorry my help is so sporadic; I really only get on the forums at work.
  3. Well as my post states, I'm looking for someone who knows how to take clips of mp3 tracks and record voice overs on them to use as segues between tunes and talking when I DJ, and also as an intro. I guess I would need someone who knows how to work with music editing software. Even if I were proficient with it(which I'm not), I would still want someone else's voice on my promos. Preferably male, now that I think of it. Sexy male voice. So if you know how to edit music and can do what I'm asking, we may have a deal if you're not asking too much. I'm not SLoaded. And this is an SL-only, one time job, so we're not talking "employment" persay, more like contracting.
  4. No, never worry that you'll accidentally delete your account. The only way you can do that is by accessing your account from secondlife.com and choosing to, or by committing a TOS violation sever enough to get permabanned, like intellectual property right infringement. Uninstalling SL is easily done using Add/Remove programs, since you mentioned having Windows. Then you can delete any peripheral folders you find in App Data>Roaming>Secondlife. Then just go re-download and install it just as you did the first time. If that doesn't solve the problem, there's not a whole lot I can do for you if it's all on LL's end. You can't get their good support, but you can file a ticket, I believe. I've never bothered in all my 4 years.
  5. I need some more details, such as: what viewer you are running are you having any other internet related issues- because you should have checked anything specific about the error message Honestly, the best thing to do first off when there's an issue is to check secondlife.com/status. They're usually pretty quick to let us know when things go awry. Usually. >.> If you can't find any info and nothing seems wrong, uninstall your viewer, delete all the related files, and do a clean install.
  6. I'm glad I found this thread, because it's much how I feel as well; after being gone from SL for quite some time I came back this summer, and while at work and bored one day I decided to pull up the forums and was really disappointed by the changes... not the least of which being my old account and everything I added to it back then. The forums get their job done, but it's so clinical now. There used to be some fun, and now it's mostly so businesslike, and of course like any forum there are the few who have upteen thousand posts and think that for some reason, that means they carry some kind of authority- but even they're not fun to poke at anymore. It's still an ok way to kill time, and there's an interesting debate occaisionally, but the best one I've seen so far had the OP being called a troll for posting because it was controversial. Don't get me wrong; mindless trolling sucks and it should be discouraged, but when we get so concerned about trolls that we take away all the dissent then we're really losing something. Entertainment, mostly. Isn't that was SL is supposed to be about?
  7. I need a couple of promos made to use when I DJ; clips with voiceover introducing me, maybe 2 of them just a couple of minutes long at the most. IM me here or inworld with what kind of things you can do and how much you would charge if I were to have you make them. Also, if anyone has any advice about how I might make them myself(such as, good software to use) that would be appreciated as well. I don't really want to use my own voice to introduce myself, so I'll need a couple made either way.
  8. ^^That; you can't drag dance balls into it even if they are copiable; you need to pull the animations out of the balls first. If you are indeed doing that, I'd just keep dropping the creator notecards until they answer you. You say "over and over" but you don't say over how long the time period is; not everyone gets on every day or immediately if they get an offline. A day or 2 is pretty reasonable.
  9. Unfortunately, "average" is a hard thing to quantify in SL. For some types of people, very realistically sized avatars are "average" and that makes sense; however, in SL it really isn't the majority. Most guy avis that I see are translate to something like 8' tall. You can wear things that contain as few prim parts as possible, but I'm sure you've noticed they don't usually look quite as good. There's really not much you can do about having to edit things, I guess is what I'm saying. The only advice I can really give you is try not to be too overly muscular or too skinny. That's as close to "average" as I think you can manage and should save you some time.
  10. Not everyone thinks of their avis as themselves. Some people, like the type who have alts, may think of each avi as different characters.
  11. If everything continues past that message to load the viewer, it's normal and part of the login messages. When the world is loading, it may appear frozen, and it will tell you that every time you log in. If you're actually having issues getting inworld after seeing those messages, then there might be a problem and troubleshooting steps can be applied.
  12. Well, the problem is, the scope and possibilities of SL are so vast that what you're asking is really not specific enough. You can contact me inworld if you like- same name- in the late afternoon-to-night SL time when I'm usually on. If you're looking for places to hang out, where to find stuff to customize your avi(free or no), and general "how to do" type info, I'd be happy to help =) Of course you can msg here as well, where I lurk while I'm at work But in SL sometimes showing is better than telling. Welcome to SL!
  13. Well, it's certainly your right to not tip if you don't feel like you're being entertained. It doesn't sound like the club scene is for you, for the most part. However, there's nothing wrong with the people who feel like they should show some appreciation for the creativity that can go into those dancer's emotes(and in appreciation for the avi they put together)- the friendliness and welcoming attitude of a hostess who keeps a party going- and the well-thought-out set of a DJ who sets the mood for it all. It's (sometimes)cool when they mix their own music, but even making a set that flows well from regular tracks- rarely overhyped mainstream music in the places I hang out and play, btw- is something that not anyone can just download SAM and do right off the bat. Many people in SL depend on tips from happy clubgoers for their Ls, and it would be a decidedly much less friendly place to be if this were not so. Just because you think something is stupid doesn't make it so. As far as tribute bands go- I've seen a few tribute shows that were basically avis animated to play a show to tracks by the artist- and that in itself is probably not all that awesome. However, in addition to the animations and appearance of the band, the shows I saw went to extreme efforts to create the "feel" of a concert- the best one I ever saw was a Tool tribute show put on by Kehl Razor(of Razorblade Jacket/Depraved Nation) with all these amazing visual effects and props- he and the rest of the crew who put it together(mostly staff from the club he used to have, Sadistik) deserved every L they got tipped that night. It was an awesome experience.
  14. Perhaps he meant to make cutouts or holes in something, or maybe he was actually looking for "translucent" as a descriptor. There are many reasons why one might need some type of transparency.
  15. "An IP address is not a person." - Judge Harold Baker The simple fact of the matter is, all manner of trolls, including griefers, infest the interwebs. If you get mad, they win. Just keep banning and move on, file your reports, and don't give them the satisfaction of creating forum topics about them. This is what is known as "feeding the troll", and it will only keep them coming. The fact that this and the notice for your club are both showing on the main page of the forums is like griefer bait.
  16. Right, if a new person stands around in a club not dancing for more than a few minutes to rez, then definitely some assistance should be offered. Telling everyone where the public dance balls are- and the differences between them if the club has different kinds- is something hostesses should and usually do handle that I've seen. However, I don't spend alot of time in clubs other than the ones owned by friends, and perhaps in other places there are more problems. Our dances balls also have hovertext above them as well, I believe.
  17. I agree with some of the op, but there are a few things we "oldies" should remember- mainly, that in the case of private property, they probably don't know there IS private property right at first, especially if you're a renter on a sim with public areas. I've had that happen many times, and most people will just leave if I let them know they're trespassing. If it's truely that big a concern, like you rent somewhere with very high traffic, then you should be able to set up restriction lines around your lot. I didn't, because sometimes they would show through my walls and that's ugly =/ You can invest in an inexpensive security system too, that ejects people who aren't allowed after a warning. I used to have one that just put an orb around unwanted visitors so that even if they did wanna hump someone on my furnitures, they wouldn't be able to see it Not that I never had to boot anyone- but both times I did, they weren't new, they were just wannabe griefer asshats. One spent the next hour flying around my ban lines and probably watching me change, and the other just stood out in the street and threatened to grief me if I didn't give him money(the report on that one with the copypasta of the conversation was HILARIOUS). Both avis were over a year old at the time. Most new people are not going to consider it rude to send a friend request right off the bat either. You don't have to accept it, but you don't have to be a snotty arse about it either; just explain that you prefer to keep your friends list to people you talk to regularly for the sake of managability and go from there. As far as the propositioning for sex out of nowhere or inappropriately; pffft, just mute. Those kind of approaches don't deserve the courtesy of a response or the time it would take to chew them out. I prefer to keep my SL as free from drama and BS as possible, because otherwise it's not fun. If someone asks you for money, you can either mute or give them a couple of suggestions on how to make money. Or link them the marketplace and give them LMs for freebies. It doesn't have to ruffle your feathers unless you let it. Teens in adult clubs can be a real issue- I just found out recently that someone I worked with in a club 2 years ago JUST turned 17. A very adult club. But honestly, if you can't prove they're underage then it's not really your problem. Mute is a lovely and useful tool if people are acting like teenagers. Oh yeah, and hostesses that ignore noobs don't keep their jobs in the clubs I work at, either. You don't deserve tips to put on a group tag and dance next to the DJ. Hostessing is probably the most demanding job in a club, as far as actually working events goes(assuming all the DJs software behaves- how I hate you sometimes SAM! lol). If you're not willing to be friendly, engaging, keep up the chatter, and welcome people, then you should find another way to earn your Ls.
  18. Your best bet is to IM the creator and ask; I've had some where C was cleavage- there were varying degrees of cleavage like an "MC" too- and F meant freckles. Sometimes the abbreviations can refer to whether or not the skin has pubic hair. I've had some confusion over this kind of thing as well; with the obligatory "thanks and no return" nc that seems to come with every purchase nowadays it seems they might could include a key for their own personal shorthand, amirite? ;D
  19. I understand that sometimes the expectations of things I have may sound simple to me, but that's because I have little or no knowledge of coding, website design, or anything like that So I grumble along with most of the rest of the ignorant, but I sort of know I'm asking a lot more than it feels like.
  20. Black and red. Truth be told, I like odd unnatural colors best of all.
  21. Yes, it is impossible under TOS, but I don't think it should be. If there's some way to verify that your alt is indeed your alt- and if they can blanket ban all your alts surely this is possible- you ought to be able to transfer things to yourself. Just my opinion.
  22. First of all, I read this to mean extremely low-quality, crappy looking freebies are the problem... not all freebies in general... and I agree. I don't think most people want to get rid of freebies entirely; that would be way worse as far as retention goes. But when you choose 0-10L and Best Selling, the items that pop up there are largely the same ones that were there 2 years ago when I left SL... and things have changed ALOT since then. All those ancient full-perm outfits you used to be able to pick up in every freebie place- with the awful textures and rampant bling- are still being posted to the marketplace for 5-10L by people thinking they can actually make money selling freebies, and since it doesn't cost anything to post them, they literally flood the marketplace with ugliness that is going to have most people saying "wtf". I try to search using "newest" but that's the worst of all... highest rated helps some, but you often end up with a lot of crap that a new person would not be looking for; also, sometimes the things I get on that filter have no ratings at all, which is confusing. On an sort of related note, there needs to be an exclusion option for search... such as searching "blue boots" in "0-10L" EXCLUDING "demo" in title. Wading through demos when freebie shopping is extremely frustrating. ***edited to add*** I guess they redid the forums while I was gone for those 2 years too- this is far from my first post! lol
