  1. The only thing that is really important to me is to make sure these changes aren't going to require updates to the rigging of the current generation of mesh bodies, and by extension all clothes made to fit them; can anyone give me any additional detail about that?
  2. PeeWee's answer is the correct one... minus one detail. A person can disclose whatever they like about themselves, but unless they do it in a public way via open chat or their visible profile, anything they tell you in IM is confidential... IN THEIR EXACT WORDS. It definitely violates TOS to relay any EXACT messages or copy/paste any logs of IMs with this person without their express consent. However... your hands are not tied in reference to your friend, as you can tell anyone what someone told you IN YOUR OWN WORDS anytime you like and will be committing no TOS breaches. This is the loophole you were seeking. So by all means, spare your friend/patron some heartache if you like, as long as she'll believe you without the "proof" an IM log would provide. Also- your sim your rules- you can ban anyone you like and any of their alts with no reason at all, if you so choose. Bear in mind the negative light it may shed on your establishment if this dishonest putz decides to start some sh!t, though.
  3. You're really going to have trouble getting people to believe you're more mature than the average 17 year old when you spell worse than my 9 year old. I'm just sayin. Maybe you should spend less time in SL and more time reading/doing homework.
  4. If you didn't gather from the other answers, you are not likely to get your money back, and the seller has no obligation to refund anything... ESPECIALLY if you deleted the item, which may have been transferrable and helped your case by making it possible to return what you bought. I'd treat this as a learning experience and be more careful when you make future purposes. IMs demanding refunds are probably ignored, by the way. You should really check this person's profile, as most creators have at least one pick devoted to their store policies.
  5. You really don't need the Bloodlines crap to start a vampire clan(even in the White Wolf style), and most serious rp'ers hate it. It makes people lazy; roleplay is about telling stories, not clicking HUDs. Just a heads up.
  6. Because the more items you purchase at once, the more likely they are to not get delivered at all. Even 10 at once is pushing your luck. You're paying extra by using paypal, just so you know... a surcharge on every order. You're much better off purchasing Lindens in "bulk" depending on how much you wish to spend and paying that surcharge only once. I'm sure it also makes the checkout process faster as well.
  7. I like this idea. As far as the op goes, if the person is truly so superficial as to lose all interest after one picture, then they weren't worth bothering with, and good luck to them ever finding anything meaningful. Most people I know look significantly better in person. The girl in this situation should just be glad she dodged a bullet, because a guy like that sounds like a cheater waiting to happen. What happens when you start to get old together? Pfft. Looks are one of the least important aspects of any long term, happy relationship, because the people in those relationships realize that's the one thing that is going to change no matter what you do. People stressing looks are still too immature to handle serious relationships, because they have no grasp of that yet. I don't put rl pictures in my SL profile anymore, because even though I'm not a model by any means, it leads to lots of creepiness and very unwanted IMs from strangers. **edited to fix typos**
  8. With on-board graphics only, you may get the older viewers to work, but it will be a laggy and frustrating experience. Even a very cheap GPU would make worlds of difference, and I suggest you look into that if you really want to use SL. Nvidia cards seem to have less problems as SL is built on Nvidia. Best of luck to you.
  9. The "add" option is the one that you need to use, but you have to have a V2 style viewer for this to work. In the future, providing your viewer will lead to more accurate answers. If you're using a V1 style viewer such as Pheonix, you can't wear both.
  10. I've been DJing for years in SL as well, and even though I'm catching a little disparagement in reference to we who use a playlist, I've never had any complaints about my sets. It's not as simple as autopilot, and anyone who thinks so is a **bleep**ty DJ. There's an art to constructing a playlist that has a flow from one track to the next, that builds to a climax and cools you off, that has a logical progression with no jarring genre or tempo changes, that has nothing to do with random songs thrown on in a autoplayed set list as I guess the ones who are giving us all bad names do. Also, the personality of the DJ is almost as important as what they play. Now that my offendedness is satisfied, let me say that SAM is far superior to WInamp, and some places will not hire you with Winamp because it's thought of as being, well, amatureish. There are ways of obtaining SAM that don't cost anything at all *cough* though I'd NEVER suggest those. Of course. I just want you to be prepared for some people to be a bit disdainful of your broadcaster choice if you go Winamp.
  11. Np at all, I'd hate to see anyone have to use invisiprims when there's another choice!
  12. I agree with most of this, however I have a box that I keep transferrable things I don't wear anymore in to help out noobs. I mean if they're worth keeping; I don't give noobs crappy stuff. I have all my things separated into folders and subfolders and more subfolders lol... and my favorite designers get their own subfolders, sometimes several if they make ensembles, individual pieces, shoes... I really wish there was an option to click a link and go somewhere without it copying a LM into my inventory EVERY TIME. It's really irritating. Another tip- rez those "object"s before you delete them, especially if you've ever built anything! It's been suggested that I make outfits, but honestly... I rarely wear exactly the same thing twice, so it's not a lot of use to me, and I save items that way because I don't have multiple copies of the same thing in many folders.
  13. Your idea of "too big" is just an opinion. As I stated repeatedly... SL is not RL. There is no reason to apply rl norms to SL unless you choose to, and even now most people don't. By saying "everyone and everything else" isn't realistic, you're making my point for me. This is a virtual world/metaverse/pick your term. To say that if it doesn't conform to the real world it isn't "right" is just like I said, silly. What needs to disappear, probably, is the comparison to real world height and size that really doesn't matter, because that's where all this "but their scale is wrong" crap comes from. When I say "SL scale" I'm referring to how my slider is IN THE MIDDLE, exactly. That makes me average, in SL. That makes people who are waist high on me child size, in SL. The "shoulds" and "woulds" are all nothing but opinion. This is how things ARE. I don't see most of the grid rebuilding because of some numbers in an appearance editor screen that don't really mean anything, where they're being used. They are just numbers. This stuff isn't real. People take shtuff way too freakin seriously.
  14. Well said. With the block feature, which turns annoying trolls and morons into little clouds of silent nothing, as well as how easy it is to copy/paste their shenanigans into an abuse report, there is never any reason to suffer from "bullying" in SL.
  15. Ok, there's a couple of issues here that people are only barely touching on- for one, SL is not RL. I am slightly above average height for a caucasian woman in rl(5'6"), and in SL my slider for height sits at 50- exactly the middle. It makes most of my clothes sit in the right place and stuff like that, so I'm about "average" height in SL. That is NOT tall, in reference to everything around me as far as builds and most avatars go. However, my appearance editor says that it equates to about 6.5 feet tall. That means someone who is my "actual" rl height, in SL, is going to look really tiny next to me. Also, most people build and make clothes based on SL scale, not rl. I take mild offense to the deprecating terms being used to describe avatars that fit into SL by people being **bleep** and pretentious about numbers- you're not better than the person who fits into the SL environment just because you make things harder on yourself. It seems really silly to me to be so determined to let some number... based on WHAT, if not your environment... make SL so much more difficult for you. Being so picky about "realistic"(come ON people, we can FLY) height is going to mean more time spent editing, on top of getting kicked out of adult sims that have height requirements and everything else. It-is-not-RL. If I were you, I would fashion my avi to be shorter TO SCALE, IN SL, instead of fixating on what your height translates to irl. Find an a building and make yourself the same height you would be in a rl doorway, something. The simple fact is- "realistic" height is not realistic in SL. It can make you look like a child. You don't have to fit into the SL scale if you don't choose, but don't whine because other people don't want to change the way things have always been to suit YOU.(Not talking to the OP just there.) Marianne LIttle said: "I have seen very many small female avatars lately. They all seem to have narrow eyes, grumpy mouth and very, very wide hips. They reach up to my shoulders, so I wonder if short and angry is the new black? **Only uploaded images may be used in postings**://secondlife.i.lithium.com/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif" border="0" alt=":smileysurprised:" title="Smiley Surprised" /> Maybe the male height will shrink a bit too, as dance animations and other animations will be "off" between so different heights." I seriously hope this does not become some kind of "norm" that changes things, honestly. It looks ridiculous. especially since most of them have freakishly huge Mr Mackey heads. I don't know if this is because they're too lazy to edit their bajillion piece single attachment piercings and hair to fit a proportionate head, or whether they don't know any better- I just hope it goes away. ***edited to add*** since when is "a n a l" a curse word? Pfft. Censorhip blows.
  16. Yes, it's just a matter of those alpha layers not being the right length for your legs. IF you're seeing feet when you move the shoe up, however, you're not wearing alphas. Get ahold of me inworld and I can send you a bunch of full perm opensource alpha laters in varying lengths that may work better for you. I've had to use several of them, because sometimes simply moving the shoe up makes your legs look wrong/out of proportion.
  17. Despite their admission that it is full of bugs, Firestorm is still the best viewer right now, imho, for a few reasons. (Btw, if impatient people weren't being ungrateful asshats, the mesh update would proabably not be so buggy because we'd still be waiting and they wouldn't release it until it was ready!!) First and most important to me as a former devoted Pheonix user myself, is the ability to customize it to use many aspects of the UI to V1 style that I wasn't willing to give up, and that they give you step by step instructions for how to set that up. Secondly, SL runs better, with less lag and a significantly higher frame rate for me on Firestorm. My computer is only midrange, but I can play comfortably on ultra graphics now, where I never could before. With this update came a few of the Pheonix features I was missing, such as showing what others are looking at- that showed as an option on the last version of Firestorm, but it didnt' work, nor did it work to turn off broadcasting my own which is a pain... I like to pervcam ninjastyle! That appears to have been fixed. The thing is, all viewers are buggy. The development team @ Pheonix is just more honest about their issues than LL. The only way to know for sure which is the best viewer for you is to try them out, because everyone's machine is different.

    Alts

I created a male and female alt just to see how easy it is to build a good-looking avi without spending any Ls- or very, very few- so that I could be certain that my irritation with people who run around for a year looking like a noob is justified. It very much is. It didn't really take all that much effort even, except when I took my male alt through the MHOH, which was a bit time consuming but more than worth it. Each of my alts cost less than 200L, and they only cost that much because frankly, there really aren't any GOOD free/almost free AOs. But Oracul has a couple that are 150L each, and they are fine. None of them has a single item of clothing or accessories that cost more than 10L, and I'd challenge anyone to be able to tell. I don't really "play" them so much, but when I do they are rp characters only. As far as I know, no one knows they are me, however I am aware of the need to change my syntax... and I'm quite good at it... plus I don't use them to interact with people I am close to. To do that without telling them, I think, would be dishonest.
  19. You need to drag the box to the ground, then it may tell you to just left-click it for contents- if not, right click and choose open, then choose to copy the items to your inventory(if you choose copy and wear, it will detach and remove anything else you're wearing). Then you can choose to wear it, unboxed. Many things you buy in SL will come in these boxes, and they can all be opened the same ways =) Welcome to SL; feel free to look me up inworld!
  20. Very well said- I never realized how much better SL could run on my middleground machine until I got Firestorm. It doesn't have all the features I love in Pheonix(yet)- and there are a few bugs- but as a work in progress it is nothing short of fantastic. I swore I'd never give Pheonix, but seeing what mesh looks like in V1 code is pretty convincing. There are screenshots in the aforementioned Pheonix blog of what it will look like. **People with ATI gpus should be aware that the last 3 driver updates may be unstable with Firestorm and cause frequent crashes. 11.5 is a stable update though, and you only suffer a small performance loss by "downgrading" your drivers.** I gained 15-20+ fps everywhere I go switching from Pheonix to Firestorm. I have almost no visual lag in even crowded places. Things rez much faster. I don't know what those geeky geniuses did, but I ♥ them for it. Now if only it will hide my "look at" crosshairs like it says it will... and show me other people's =P
  21. Most good stores do have at least some things on the Marketplace, but alot don't have everything; I'd suggest if you like a designer you see on the Marketplace to visit their inworld store... if for no other reason than to help their traffic =D
  22. Lapointe & Bastchild was my first thought; I think their stuff is way better than Avid. Also DE Designs, Gothicatz, Razorblade Jacket, and the also aforementioned Sinistyle are great for quality in goth/punk/distressed. I don't really have a whole lot to offer in other genres; DV8 is great if you're into cybergoth. Getting involved in hunts for men is a great way to get to sample the wares of many designers without straining your L balance. The best way to find good stuff though, is to just get out there and look- I know to many males the idea of spending hours in SL shopping isn't the most fun ever(though it sounds just grand to me) but once you have a good stock of LMs for things you like, it won't be nearly so time-consuming, especially if you join their update groups or subscribe to their updates so you know when they have new stuff.
  23. I don't know if you make avatar components, but what I'm mainly thinking about is clothes and attachments that currentlyhave all those clipping issues and whatnot- things like that. Also I'm just getting into building and I wonder if perhaps I should ditch the sculpts as well and just learn mesh to begin with. Currently, my viewer doesn't support mesh- I'm assured the Firestorm team is working on it- but since things are definitely progressing. I'm not really looking for answers so much; just thinking "aloud"
  24. YAY! I wonder how many creators are going to offer updates to the mesh versions of their creations, the same way previous updates have been provided. Just a thought.
  25. Sometimes it's fun to dress that way because it's ridiculous; I mean, "low rise" has gone to new lows in SL It makes me giggle to think how any woman, regardless of how "hot" she is, would look in those rl(walking like a duck to keep her pants from falling off LOL)... likewise with the practically backless dresses, super short vag-flashing skirts and super low necklines- it's all absurd realistically speaking, but hell you don't even need double-sided tape to keep that artfully crooked half-tank top in place in SL, so why not? It can look damn good, done properly. I don't really see how it's a "power play" though; anyone who seriously thinks having a "hot" avatar gives them power- or lets someone with a "hot" avatar have power over them for only that reason- needs to realize that pretty much ANYONE could look just like that, if they bought the same stuff. You could find yourself someone who doesn't have a falsely overinflated ego over something illusory and make them look just like the stuck up "hottie" if you want. *shrug* Pretty pixels are nice, but the brains behind them are what really matters, as far as being sexy goes. The person who said you see mostly that because of the places you frequent is also correct, however. Birds of a feather n whatnot. Look around some other type places if you wanna see what female avatars look like in more than straps n strings
