  1. I have been having a lot of fun in Kitely. It has everything that SL has, and cheaper land. It's a builder's paradise. The sim transitions are fantastic. It's the best kept secret of the metaverse imo.
  2. Charli Infinity wrote: Not it's not based on my search. I'm refering on the best selling products link...the things that most people are buying. It seem people really like the stuff with the jersey shore look. We merchants have been complaining for a long time about freebies and dollarbies (the tacky stuff) dominating the search. Make your presence known in the Merchant's forum about this as a customer. Check out ColdLogic and anything else made by Damien Fate for non tacky clothes.
  3. I saw a full perm mesh staircase get a 1 star rating because this person tried to link it to standard prims and the LI blew out. Another problem with full perm mesh is you can't export it to do your own adjustments, unless you sell the .dae file with it. Otherwise, all you can do is change the size and link it to other mesh parts - or risk blowing out the LI. I can be rectified here. This is just going on my own experience and thoughts. There have been changes to LI costs (for the better) since Mesh first came out. If LI blows out, it is either due to a torus (which is a resource hog - I try to avoid using them) or an improper setting on the features tab. As a rule of thumb, set everything to convex hull and only switch to prim if necessary.
  4. RAM is cheap right now. Most storebought computers have the minimum required RAM. Get your PC/laptop up to 8GB at least and you could see a huge difference.
  5. I see Firestorm being "The" modern TPV and Singularity becoming "The" 1.x viewer of choice. I think will be best for the community, as then the teams for Firestorm are not split between 1x and 3x.
  6. TY for the update - even if it's an "I'm working on it" it lets us know we are being heard.
  7. Many items in my sim have not rezzed. I am on the main channel. The doors on my buildings have not rezzed. However you can't walk through, either. There is lots of lag. Parts of my land have not rezzed. Edit: I live on Smaug on the Mainland. I own all of the sim except Route 9 and a tiny corner that belongs to Linden Lab.
  8. Sorry, yeah - the comment about elitism was for someone else (jwenting). I read the links you posted about the inworld shopping. I still see the marketplace as a positive thing, but I will always have a store inworld because I sell buildings and furniture. From the comments, most customers who prefer the MP are saying it's due to lagginess, from other avatars. I wonder what the average LI of an avatar is. Clothing shopping inworld is much the same as the marketplace, anyway. Perhaps if mesh is more copybot proof, you may see more samples in the store. As it is right now, whether you are inworld or not, you only get to see images of clothing products. I find it interesting that Firestorm can be full screen and the LL viewer can't. After all these years, I often wondered why the Lindens can't just hire the phoenix team to make the viewer.
  9. Just a follow-up: Mesh: I have had the uploader fail on simple things like photo frames. I have had the model upload inside out. I upload again, and it's fine. It's very tempermental. I agree about the clothing issues - I am a structures builder so most of my review was based on my POV. Viewer: I don't deny that there may be a few "elitist" veterans, but that has not been my experience most of the time for me. Many of the veteran players have been tremendously helpful to me. However, there have been times when I heard their frustrations with the viewer changes. Did SL run any classes when they changed the viewer like firestorm does? Why were so many veteran players left in the cold? I would agree that it was just "resistance to change" except that too many people were unhappy for it to just be that. I am concerned about removal of the land requirement to list on the marketplace. However, your shopping experience must have been before my time - as there are only a very few attractive, uncluttered places to shop in world. I do think that the marketplace could be a window into all that you can do in SL. The polish I am talking about when comparing to MMO's is not the graphics per se. I am talking about the capabilities of the viewer (multiple card support, 64 bit support) and the quality of the interface (why do we need to see the windows bar?) and the marketplace.
  10. I generally don't have problems with my ATI video cards. The biggest problem with ATI is that sometimes they release really crappy drivers, so upgrade drivers with caution. Also, avoid super cheap video cards (e.g. sapphire, etc) because their coolers are crappy - unless you are nerdy enough to buy the video card and replace the cooler right away. I have the 6xxx series - the 4xxx are rather old.
  11. After being in second life for one whole year, the title sums up my feelings about new technology in second life. For me, the whole 3D experience is the reason to be here. Otherwise, it's a glorified redundant social network. The Good... I have met many outstanding creative people here - and I get to interact with their creations. The Builder's Brewery group has been especially amazing. I love the look of second life - the skies, the water, and I love building inworld as well as making mesh objects to bring inworld. Coming from MMO's that have eveything set a certain way, the freedom is incredible. Problems... Mesh: I love Mesh - I am uploading my own creations, and purchasing from other creators. However, it seems we have to find creative ways to create despite the mechanics of SL. The uploader often fails for no apparent reason. Sometimes meshes that look fine in blender turn out all strange in SL. It's the PROBLEMS that plague this product.Pathfinding: The ideas of this are just amazing, but the issues it brought to my mainland plot (which is nearly a full sim) have really turned me off. Is it all worth it? What are the benefits? Why was this even published in such a beta state?Viewer: As a newer user, I had no problems with the viewer 2 / viewer 3 styles of viewers UI. I found them very intuitive (especially viewer 3 which is superior to viewer 2). However, I am using firestorm. Why? more features! Honestly, I feel that this is a case that you do not know your own customer base. The phoenix team makes a better SL viewer because they use second life themselves. Viewer and Veteran Residents: I understand that this is a mature product and older users are resistant to change. I get that - but it's not an excuse. When the new viewers UI was designed, not enough attention was paid to current users using the old viewers. When you look from their point of view, the same things they do every day went from muscle memory to completely alien. Furthermore, when the veteran players can't figure out the viewer, how are they supposed to help the new players? Firestorm kept the most working and compelling features of the old viewer while embracing the cool things about V3. Marketplace: The marketplace is disgusting. The SEO is subpar and the implementation is horrible. Search doesn't work. Sorting by Newest and Best Selling doesn't work. It's a total mess. It's a shame because the marketplace could be the thing that sells SL to new customers. Look at all the cool things you can buy. Look at all the incredible things the MP could do. It's a total waste of an opportunity.Solutions: Viewer: The damage is done in regard to veteran players and the viewer - I really don't know if there is a solution for that, other than what Firestorm is doing. The things I want most in a viewer now are tech improvements. You are improving server technologies without improving the performance of the viewer. I have crossfired video cards. Many Nvidia users have SLI. The Second life viewers do not access that technology. I run a 64 bit OS. How much better could SL run if it could access all of the features in my 5 year old computer? I want a full-screen viewer. I don't want it to be on the internet. I don't want to see the windows bar. I WANT IMMERSION. Bugs: Do not release any more major new features until the bugs are out of Marketplace, Direct Delivery, Mesh and Pathfinding. There are many old bugs that continue to plague SL. The prims on my sim still drift. Often the inventory system slows to a crawl. Create a Scrum team dedicated to fixing the bugs that make SL look so sloppy and unprofessional.Marketplace: You really need an SEO expert and an E-Commerce expert to look at the problems with the marketplace. Hire the right kind of experts (get a few contractors) to fix the marketplace. It needs help NOW to get back on track and be a huge asset to Second Life. Get deliveries and payments right.Communication: There is simply not enough meaningful communication between LL and players. We hear from the CEO once a year if that? Increase meaningful communication. Twitter DOES NOT COUNT. No news is BAD news when it comes to anything online. The Future... I like some of the new things down the pike. I am excited about Specular and Normal maps coming to textures. I do like the fact that you are trying to get more Residents through Steam. I have concerns with Steam coming - and it's not the typical concerns other Residents have. My concern is that with the viewer performance and the marketplace where it is now, Steam players will not stay. The Steam players have access to many FTP MMO's and other games whose worlds are better implemented. Steam players will have expectations that in a mature "game" (their point of view :) ) like Second life, these things should be in place and in working order. I enjoy Second Life. I pay a premium to own land here. AllI want is to see is the development to Stop Dabbling and DIVE IN. Finish the projects you start and really make it worth the money to spend tier on land. I came to SL from a sandbox MMO that closed. Building and making things is why I am here. The creativity here is the attraction. Embrace it.
  12. I think the key here is to consider mesh to be a tool in your building arsenal as opposed to a replacement for sculpties. Experiment. I have builds which incorporate mesh, sculpties and prims. Sculptie meshes have a lot of triangles, which will greatly increase the upload cost (and therefore LI). Reduce the extra triangles (especialy the useless ones along a flat plane). Keep only the triangles which actually add detail. What did you use for physics models? You can create your own physics models to be the fewest triangles. Remember that simple physics shapes (if you don't need detailed physics, or if the item will be phantom anyway, you can use a cube!) can reduce land impact considerably.
  13. I concurr that it has to be a combination of summer and the economy. The US economy has been limping for the past 2 years - and the faeces hit the fan on the Eurozone just recently.
  14. I do not like it at all. It's way too cartoonish.
  15. I would like to see "Structures" moved out of "Building Components". These items are finished builds, and are not "Components" at all. It's annoying when searching for an item by keyword (e.g. "fan") and having to page through all the finished builds that have that keyword. Sloppy. There is also a bit of a mess in the Sculpties area. You have 2 categories for Sculpties - Building Components -> Sculpted prims Creators Tools and Building Components -> Building Aids -> Sculpted Prims. These need to be consolidated. As for the Meeroos, you could have a category Breedable Pets -> Fantasy Animals which could include Meeroos without naming them as a brand. Other "fantasy Creatures" like Dragons or Unicorns could go in there as well.
  16. Texturing with any sort of in-world generator has problems. The Texture offsets are almost always in multiples of 4. Because of this, the size of your prims you use to make the sculpt map need to also be in multiples of 4. Even when that is done correctly, Texturing will still be complicated. You will end up stretching or squishing in multiples of 4. The Builder's Brewery often has classes on the various in-world tools. It may be worth your while to check them out.
  17. The latest Firestorm is really a great viewer. Give it a try in Phoenix mode. I use the V3 mod now, but I heard the Phoenix mode is awesome.
  18. How about we rent some extra server capacity during this migration?
  19. Amen!!! I report people who do this. It's just as annoying as email spam.
  20. What you describe is Fraud, not robbery. Just as bad, but legally different.
