These objects often have extremely offensive photos of pornography, dead and mutilated bodies, and heart-wrenching animal abuse. Some people believe that Second Life would be a better place to visit if Linden Lab would give selected volunteer residents the ability to stop griefer attacks as they are occurring. There are organized, trained groups in Second Life whose members respond to these griefer attacks 24 hours a day and submit Abuse Reports to Linden Lab. Employees are expensive. Many companies and agencies are learning that working with volunteers provides equivalent service to that obtained from a paid employee at little or no cost. We have already created a framework for a pilot program to implement a volunteer Governance Team to respond to griefer attacks. Can we speak to someone in Linden Lab to discuss this idea? I wish there was a like button. LIKE!
  2. No new feet bones? I was hoping to get rid of all the different feet that load with mesh bodies, and the seam. It would be nice if we could pose the feet. I don't think feet need as many bones as hands, but it would be nice to have the feet be able to flat or high-heeled without separate meshes. Currently, mesh body makers load all the different feet types and make them all transparent, except the one you are using. I was hoping to get rid of that laggyness.
  3. What you probably have, is a "boxed" item. You will need to either wear it or rez it (set it down in a sandbox), then right-click and "open". Wait until you see items listed in the popup window, then click "copy to Inventory." You can also pick "copy and wear" but that makes you wear everything.
  4. You need to ask the giver of the gift card, or join the caspervend inworld group. I know there was an old version of the gift card system that was not very good, but I thought casper disabled it.

The reason for the request had to meet certain criteria, such as for business reasons or you were a RL celebrity and wanted to have your avatar have your RL name.. They didn't change the name on your account, you got a new avatar. The fee? $1000 US billed annually for as long as the last name was used by an active account. So get rich and famous in RL or start a company and grow it into a big brand name with deep pockets and perhaps you could still buy a special name. Its been years since I've seen this done though, so maybe they don't allow it anymore or maybe no one is interested in paying such a large fee. A display name is a much cheaper alternative since it is free. Like I said, squandered opportunity. Make it so expensive that no one wants it I use my "display name." Unfortunately, about 90% of SL's scripts and everything else that attempts to call me by name calls me "Braylasana Resident" and not my "display name." It's practically useless (which is probably why it's free.)
  6. Dearest Lindens: Look. This is something the community wants - the ability to have a last name on "newer" characters. This is an opportunity that thus far as a company (who wants to make money, I presume) you all have squandered. You could develop last name reimplementation - and charge for it. Normally, I wouldn't suggest such a thing - but sometimes I feel as though developments that are not fixing world-braking bugs need profit potential in order to get done. you could charge like $500 linden or require permium membership in order to get or change a last name. Thoughts?

  8. That's why I said "sometimes". I know that some creators can make things better than others. The thing I am talking about here is the fact that the standard sizing is a workaround for a deficiency in design that works to varying degrees. I just want people to keep that in mind until a better solution is found for avatars. I totally agree with trying demos before purchase, no matter what type of clothing one is purchasing. I feel as though creators who don't supply demos have something to hide.
  9. Orca Flotta wrote: Honestly, when I first heard about mesh, I was yay, wow! Because I didn't think about mesh fashion at all. I just saw what cool things the talented creators could do in mesh, like houses, vehicles, all kinds of stuff. But clothes? Arrrgs, noooo!!! And up to this day I hardly see any mesh clothes that fit me correctly or have much appeal for me. Skirts? Give me the good old flexi prims any time. Bikinis, t-shirts, jeans? Paint them on me. It's all good and fine, no need for stiff, ill-fitting stuff that shows invisible alpha layers and won't even move nicely. That's my point - the reason mesh "fits wrong" is because the Lindens implemented mesh wrong. It's not the fault of creators that there are fitting problems with mesh. It's the crappy rigging of the avatar and the poor implementation of it. The alpha layers and the standard sizes are workarounds.
  10. I like: Full Screen Mode (I don't need to waste screen space with windows bars) Copy/Paste and Align Build Tools Settings on the Fly Low Crash Rate I use the hybrid mode with a few tweaks.
  11. Maybe I'm getting it wrong - perhaps it's the way I am reading things - but sometimes the problems with Mesh are improperly blamed on mesh creators. While there are different levels of skill in all creators, they are alo faced with unusual challenges due to the system. The standard sizing system for mesh clothing was designed to be a workaround for the poor rigging of the SL avatar and the under-developed mesh system. Remember that the Lindens, when they implemented mesh, had no "idea" we would want to use it for clothes. Incredible! Mesh for clothing was a low priority of the mesh project. Honestly, they need to hire people who USE second life. sheesh! So, continue to support your creators in second life by buying their goods. I do. It's far from a perfect system, but I have seen some nice things come out of it, DESPITE the poor implementation by the lindens. If you can't wear tops or bottoms due to your shape, support them by buying accessories and shoes. Furthermore, make some noise to the lindens about how unsatisfactory this is. I am sure creators AGREE with you more than you will ever know.

  13. I feel as though this whole anniversary promotion/celebration is sloppy and haphazard. There should have been a companion contest across the pond - I am sure there is a computer company who would have liked to receive markeing information offer a contest to european and asian residents.
  14. What the lindens should have done is outright hire virwox to do their exchanging for them, because they were doing a better job than the lindens anyway. I know - radical thinking - hire a financial company to do financial stuff.

I get that laptops will not beat a desktop, and will likely implode/melt/explode/give me electric shocks/die a terribe death in the near future, - but seriously - I am out on the road a lot, so this thing has to be portable, as I want to keep my hand in and keep my sl job rolling, and can't take with me or hook up a complete desktop set up in a grubby, work supplied B&B. Shame but true. Sorry - didn't wanna start a forum slanging match - but thats what I'm dealing with. For the technically infantile, like myself - what I really need is a list like - 'I have a brand XYZ machine - and its fab, or not, and is expected to survive the new updates - here's what it's called.'. Because the technical stuff is like dumping me naked in the middle of North Korea instantly, when I have no knowledge of the language or their cultural differences. I'm up for learning etc, and I'm reading all this - but I gotta be upfront with you guys.... I am just not understanding what I'm reading. LOL. I hope others are though - so pleeeeeaaase keep posting! LOL I said to post about Desktops too as if people are looking for new computers and see this thread, but I kinda thought it would happen in the same 'I have XYZ machine - and its fab,or not ,and is expected to survive the new updates - here's what it's called.' kinda way. Lol Thank for the replies though - glad and happy to read them. I missed this post somehow when I replied earlier. I would still recommend saving until you had £1300 for a laptop - that would give you what you want as far as needing higher end graphics for video editing and machima. Here is an MSI model that may suit you: http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-GT60-0ND-448UK-15-6-inch-Processor/dp/B00BETVIQG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ce_28#productDetails It's closer to your budget - but it still is an I7, 8 GB RAM and a discreet graphics card that is not Intel (Intel makes great processors - but they are not good at graphics chips). What that means is you will be able to run the graphics high-end to make videos. You will probably need external storage drives. Get one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/BlacX-eSATA-HDD-USB-Dock/dp/B001A4HAFS/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1371236082&sr=1-2&keywords=thermaltake and then you can use bare SATA drives for external storage. That will help with storing photos and videos.
  16. There is truth in both camps. Really, it depends on what your budget is, and your expectations of how much of the high-end graphics experience you want to utilize. Wireless internet is less bandwith than Ethernet, and you will see a performance downgrade when using it. There is also a bit of lag between sending the server a command and SL receiving and executing it. This is true of all computers. If you are going laptop, a discreet graphics chip with its own memory is essential. Do not get any laptop with an INTEL graphics chip. This chip was designed for business machines - it is poor at 3D and laggy at everything else. Make sure it's Nvidia or ATI/AMD. Even with these recommendations, most laptops are made for business, so graphics performance is average at best. If you are getting a laptop, make sure it is a Core I7 and at least 8 GB of ram. You may not be able to upgrade the ram, and in most laptops, upgrading the processor voids the warranty. The machine posted in the OP's original post will run SL fine, but with laptops, getting a better one means you can wait longer before buying again. Pay now or pay later. If you do not travel much, the additional money spent on a laptop is not worth it. You can get a better SL experience for the same money with a desktop machine. Most of the time, I am on my quad core desktop in my family room on my 55" TV running SL with high end graphics. My SL looks incredible this way, but this setup is not very portable. I still recommend Alienware gaming laptops. They are not as sleek looking, but that's because they incorporate better cooling fans (and you need a bit of room for that). After Alienware, I recommend Mac powerbooks. They have a sleeker look than Alienware, because the aluminum casing is part of the cooling system. Plastic sleek laptops will have poor cooling. If you are concerned about battery life, plug in whenever you can, and use the power settings to manage drain. Turn SL graphics down when using a battery, or use a text viewer. If I was going laptop, I'd wait until I had $2100 (or £1300) or better saved up to get a nice one, probably an alienware or a Mac. Remember, if you don't like Mac OS, you can run windows on your Mac. Edited for typos.
  17. Czari Zenovka wrote: I really appreciate your input, Dillon & Madelaine (may I call you Maddy?). After literally months of researching, getting the opinions of friends - some of whom are techies - more research, looking at big box stores in RL and online and more recently having watched building vids, I have come to a crossroads: 1. I definitely want a PC that will be easy to upgrade. When I check out the brand names online (Win7 having apparently disappeared from the brick & morter stores) - some of the cases seem either plastic-looking/flimsy and/or not as wide as my custom-built steel box. I had a situation years ago when I purchased an HP and when I needed to replace a component discovered only HP parts would fit it. I suppose if I found a brand name that was decent and there was a case issue, I could purchase a case later and transfer the components over. Try Alienware - although their designs are rather masculine, they specialize in gaming rigs. 2. From watching a gazillion building PCs vids, I don't see any price difference in building one vs. buying the identical PC prebuilt; in fact in some cases it is more expensive. The one area in which the prices are on par are the gaming PCs. I configured several PCs on iBUYPOWER, that someone on the forums highly recommended. I could get the low end of what I'm shooting for and stay in budget BUT iBUYPOWER charges a $75.00 shipping fee. Bleh. The main issue that concerns me about building a PC is not wanting to buy parts online that I would have to send back if it arrived damaged, etc. Dillon, I visited a friend in San Jose years ago and you're right - PC city!!! I LOVED going to Fry's and would definitely give building a try if a Fry's or Microcenter, etc. were in my area. The closest thing I have are small PC shops that stock parts. I highly recommend Directron.com. Not only do they have great prices, but their service is excellent. I build my own PC's - but not for the price. I build mine so I get exactly what I want. 3. Which brings me to the third route (and the one I initially preferred) - having a PC custom-built in a small shop like my current PC was. There are three such shops in town. I have estimates from 2 of them and posted the specs/prices of one shop in the forums awhile back. I was told many of the parts were very old, especially for the price (cheapest one being $725.00!!! and only an i3 chip). The 2nd shop's estimate was $850.00 for "an AMD quad core processor" (how generic), 500 GB HDD, and "High Resolution Graphics." Errr, could we be a bit more specific? At any rate $850.00 is way out of my budget so...NEXT. The last shop is the one that sells PC parts as well. I have not obtained an estimate from there yet but, based on the other two, I can't imagine their competitor would be much less expensive, if at all. So that's where I stand. At this point I have "overthought" the whole deal, and probably annoyed my friends who begin IMs with me saying, "How is the PC search going? *ducks*" :matte-motes-bashful-cute: The main reason I'm trying to be careful is this money is so precious to me that, if I pick a PC that can't be upgraded, etc., I won't have any more money to correct the issue. Bleh....this is making my head hurt. :matte-motes-confused: I hear you. I don't make PC purchases lightly, either. Back in the old days, I could experiment more - but now the PC is as an essential appliance as your fridge or oven. I added some notes in the above quote.
  18. Try Ebay. You could probably find a LOT of nice desktop models for sale. Laptops are a MONEY trap if you are on a budget. They are expensive to buy and impossible to upgrade. You could find a PC desktop for under $400 at Wal-Mart (or ASDA across the pond) that will run SL screaming fast. If you have a flat screen TV and it has a HDMI or VGA port, you don't even need a monitor. Mine runs on a VIZIO 55" TV. SL does need to evolve in order to survive. I am only offering some suggestions in the hopes of not leaving anyone behind.
  19. I have been on creative cloud about a year. For me, as I am a Master collection subscriber, the money ends up the same when I add it up between the sub and buying it. It's not a bad deal for me, as I do graphic design IRL. However, if I only used it for second life only, I may have felt differently. http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html You can rent photoshop alone here. If GIMP is not powerful enough for you, you can also try PSP from Corel. http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4900067&cid=catalog20038&segid=8100002&storeKey=us&languageCode=en There are some things that I prefer PSP for. It really is a great bargain. Corel products generally are good bargains. It's all a matter of whether or not you want to learn a new suite.
  20. Mesh is really in the beginning stages. Your clothes on your blog are quite nice - I would keep selling them. Many SL'ers are not wearing mesh clothes yet due to the fact that mesh doesn't resize like SL clothes does.
  21. Kenbro Utu wrote: Kitely looks interesting from a hobbyist point of view. It will not compete at the same level as SL because the in-world currency has no monetary value outside of Kitely. Selling the currency is against the TOS. It's not the social scene of Second Life as of yet, but there are a lot of things coming (including their marketplace) that I am excited about. I can see Kitely as an alternative to SL for organizations and universities. I have a large 4-sim world there, and it only costs me about 100 USD including my gold membership. I can barely get half a mainland plot in SL for that much.
  22. It depends on what state you are in, and what state you are in. No really, in NY lottery tickets are a bearer instrument, like money. However, in other states, laws are different. If you really want to find the woman, you will only be able to if she is either: a regular customer, or if she used a debit card.

We found that total number of accounts on inworldz is less than the average number of logged in users on SL capabilities of inworldz are roughly what SL was in 2006 performance was abysmal (top was about what you'd expect from SL on a bad day) porting all our investment from over the years to inworldz would be impossible, and (because of the limitations of inwoldz) so would rebuilding there. And inworldz is afaik the biggest of the other grids.... Suffice to say we decided to stay in SL, not lose all the hundreds of friends and acquaintences we have here, not lose the investment in our avatars, land, and everything else in order to save a few percent on tier cost. Inworldz screwed themselves by sticking to a really old version of Opensim and modding it. That's why they are so far behind. I looked into them, made an avi, but no mesh. booo.
