Es más probable que alguien puede ayudarle diagnosticar el problema si ud proporcione mas detalles especificas del problema. ¿Cuál fue el mensaje de error exacto que recibió? ¿Cual es el sistema operativo y la marca y modelo de tarjeta grafica que esta empleando? ¿Con cual visores ha experimentado el problema?¿Qué pasó en el momento anterior que recibió el mensaje de error? ¿Que pasó despues?

    Por ejemplo de cómo los detalles importan: si descargó los drivers usando Windows Update, y estas usando Windows 10, es posible que te dieron drivers incorrectos. Mejor usar drivers descargado directamente del website del compania que fabricó la tarjeta grafica que usa. Es mejor no dejar Windows Update insallar ningun driver. Aun en Windows 7 se puede recibir un driver que no sirve. Esa es la única sugerencia que puedo ofrecerle, sin saber mas detalles del problema.

    You posed an interesting quesion, but as others have noted, you posted  in the "General " section of the Land Forum. Confusing, isn't it?

     To get a good discussion going, try narrowing your question so people know how to respond.  Are you asking for predictions about LL plans,or are you trying to find out what features people would like to see in future? You might also explain your purpose in asking the question, so people don't respond as if to a quiz or a survey.

    I, for one, would like to see your question re-posted in a more appropriate forum. I think it could be an interesting and lively discussion.

    Ah, that elusive mermaid. I hope this doesn't mean that all virtual mermaids turn into smoothies when they de rez. Natalia Zelmanov was done with her mermaid blog nearly a year before my first rez day in the Summer of Mesh.** What a sad surprise to learn today that that wonderful, if antiquated, resource has disappeared. Even back then her excellent tutorials were drifting into legacyland. But when I was a noob her blog was one of the first and remained one of the best resources I found for learning the basics of building (or making clothes anyway) for a long time. I felt like her mermaid spirit was my mentor. She taught me not only about building, but about exploring in SL. I always wondered what had become of her. In fact, I was just on that blog a couple of weeks ago using that very hair tutorial. So in a fit of nostalgia after I read KarenMichelle's post (thank you, KarenMichelle,) about the Enlades blog, I went to the Wayback Machine: http://archive.org/web/ and looked Natalia up.

    Then, following Rolig's suggestion (Thank you, Rolig,) I did my own sleuthing and found that her hair tutorials, among videos, are indeed still on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/user/nataliazelmanov At least for the time being. Given that this technology, on which SL is based, is in its infancy, and the speed with which things change, I wonder what it will be like looking back on these early blogs 10 years hence.

    And now I have a question of my own: Now that we have all kinds of fancy sculpt and mesh hair, it would be good to know how to make a texture for curly flexi hair. I have made several attempts in Gimp, MyPaint, Krita, and even in the ArtRage software that came with my Bamboo pad, but I can't seem to get the right brush stroke. I even tried photographing my own RL hair.  All of my attempts have been less than satisfactory. I have searched for curly hair texture tutorials, but I end up back at Natalia's blog. It's like all roads lead to the Mermaid Diaries, except that now they lead to blenders. :(  I would appreciate it if someone could share a few tips on making a curly hair texture look good. Thanks.

  4. Hi, Sylvia. Welcome back to SL. There have been a lot of changes since you have been gone. I hope you are enjoying the new developments. I have recently begun to experiment with machinima, so I am not in any way an expert. But this is what I have found out so far.


    Here is an excellent series of tutorials from Erythro Asimov. They are only about 7 months old.   I found them extremely helpful and easy to follow. One thing I learned from the tutorials that made a huge difference is that you can shoot your video using a smaller window size, for example, if you have a big screen, to cut down on lag. This will make the difference between choppy pixelated footage and nice smooth video. Another is that in the Firestorm viewer, (see below) you can change settings to avoid filming interface features like toolbars, nametags and mouse, etc. so you have a nice clean video.

    I use the Firestorm viewer, successor to the popular Phoenix viewer, which has been retired.


     Firestorm has some amazing photo and machinima tools, as well as windlight, and if you were fond of Phoenix, you will be happy to know that Firestorm has retained many of the features that made the Phoenix viewer so popular, as well as adding some new ones, like a built in AO and pose stand, among others.  The development team has a group Inworld, in case you need help with settings, and they also hold classes to help folks get the most out of their viewers.

     FYI: if you get the open sim version you can set up your own Sim on a Stick as long as you don't mind having an ugly avatar named Simona Stick. :D

    Simonastick is handy for learning to build. You can have your own free 4 region sandbox, and upload anything you want for free.

     There are several other 3rd party viewers, among them Singularity http://www.singularityviewer.org/ and Niran (http://niranv-sl.blogspot.com/?zx=122f660764be5a17) has a new one out. I couldn't tell you much about them though, haven't had a chance to tinker with them much.


    Another recording software is Bandicam. I have the free version with which you can capture 10 min of video as well as sound. It does have a bandicam logo across the top of the screen in the recorded video, but this can be fixed by buying the full version, which  sells for $39 http://www.bandicam.com/

     The things I like best about Bandicam are that it is light weight and easy to use, but has good customization options like which screen you record and where your files are stored. Some screen recording software can't tell if you have two screens and will record both screens. With Bandicam you just click in the the SL viewer window and it will record from that program and ignore everything else. It will also record whatever sound your computer is making, such as music, if you have a microphone and speakers. It dumps the sound in a separate .mp3 file alongside the video, so you can edit it separately.

    One thing I haven't found out yet is how to record music directly from the program I am filming rather than through my crappy analog mike and speakers.  Well, that is probably more than you asked for, but I hope it is helpful. Have fun!

    I  meant to say that Avastar seems to be more related to making clothing than Primstar. And probably "have to" (buy one of them) is too strong a word. But I have not so far found a way to export something from Blender, and import it to Second life without some intermediary, like Primstar or Avastar. I see in your clothing tutorial that you do export a collada file from Blender and import it to SL. But you are using an Avatar model.

    So what if you are not making clothing? What if you want to make a tree, by extruding the branches, instead of making it in pieces that you bake into a sculpt map, as you do with Primstar. (At least that is as far as I have gotten.) Could you make a whole tree and export it as a collada to import to SL? I have actually tried this, but mostly I end up with a lump. So I set that idea aside and have focused on learning Primstar to make the shapes I need, that are not too distorted and can take a texture without it looks stretched. The problem with this approach, is that to make a nice, gnarly tree, you have to use a lot of sculpted prims. Is there a better way?

  6. Making mesh clothing requires a whole set of skills, I think. Like using 2D image manipulation programs like GIMP or Photoshop, and 3D, like Blender.  There are also quite a few useful techniques to be learned in the old school, ie prim manipulation way, like using flexiprims, making tiny prims, or torturing prims (ouch!) for accessory creations, and sculpt maps. 

    For using Blender in SL, you will need the Primstar 2 Addon. To learn how it works, Gaia Clary, one of the creators of Primstar has a whole series of tutorials at blog.machinimatrix.org

    She is also involved in developing Avastar, which I think is more closely related to making clothing and skins, than Blender. 

     Try the Soma School of Design. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Boudoir%20Isle/154/180/754 They have a whole new series of classes on clothing design. If you join their group, I think you will get notices of when live classes are.

    Sadly, she seems to have moved on. She stopped posting in 2010,  and some of her tutorials are becoming outdated, but she has four years worth of tutorials up, and most are still excellent for getting started.  She is also very good at explaining how to do things.

Besides Builder's Brewery and the Ivory Tower, which are excellent, there is also the Happy Hippo Building School (Kinetix (201, 137, 21), which has sandboxes you can work in, and a gallery of free tutorials, w/ supplies included.There is also a building store, like at the brewery, with lots of supplies you can buy, along with the more advanced boxed classes. Like the Brewery, they also have a great line of freebie building materials to get you started. There are often friendly people there to help you out. Sometimes they have live classes, but they don't seem to do as many as they used to. The brewery is best for live classes. If you have a gmail account, set up your calendar, and search calendars for Second Life building. There will be several places that have a calendar up, (but mostly the Brewery,) that hold classes. 

    If you are interested in learning scripting, there is the College of Scripting, Music and Science.  Horsa (46, 243, 85)

    PSG Academy has scripting tutorials, one of which you get to make a suit of Roman armor and a catapault, which will throw you up into the air.

    ps if you plug the coordinates into the location windows in your  World Map popup (Firestorm) you can use them to teleport. I don't remember if the Linden viewer has that function.

  8. Thanks to Irene Muni and Rolig Loon for their very helpful responses to my request for guidance on specs for a new system in a previous post . With their advice, and lots of research, I finally felt confident enough to ask someone to put together a system for me.  His first proposal was my absolute dream machine, but way over budget. His second, which I post here, is a negotiation between the dream machine, and a spec I had put together on Newegg, which fit my budget, but maybe all the parts didn't go together. 

    To make a long story short, I would be grateful for a second opinion or two on this spec. Specifically, would this build work well on SL at High graphics settings?  He said this would give me Outstanding FPS. 

    Does anyone have any personal experience of any of these components in SL? Thank you.

  9. If you are using Windows, look in C:\Program files\Qavimator, for xp and for 7, look in

    C:\Program Files (x86)\QAvimator. (You can type the string into your search box) 

    An alternative is to search your system for .avm and .bvh files, and note where they are located.

    An important thing to know about Windows, is that it has an annoying default behavior of hiding system files, and file extensions, which makes it difficult to find anything. 

    You might need to go into Windows Explorer ( ie open a folder) Click Tools/Options. On the View tab, scroll through advanced settings, and click Show Hidden Files. Also, unclick Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

    If you want Qavimator to save files in a more logical location, open the program, open a new file, then name it something memorable and click Save As. When the dialogue comes up, navigate to your documents folder, or wherever you want the files to be kept, and save the file in there.

    The next time you open the program, it will remember where you put the last file, and will use that place as the new default.  

  10. I am researching to buy or build a new SL capable PC. I notice that the recommended NVIDIA graphics cards:  9000 Series, posted at http://secondlife.com/support/system-requirements/ are now obsolete. At least you can't find them for sale on the nvidia site http://www.nvidia.com/object/graphics_cards_buy_now.html

    I don't want to buy an old GPU for a new build. It would be helpful if the post had a date on it, and if the  model numbers were updated to reflect what is for sale now, and if there were some basic characteristics of components listed that work with SL, rather than specific models, which become outdated so quickly. 

    The discussion  at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Choosing_a_computer#Research is somewhat helpful, but not much use in wading through all the marketing hype when trying to choose components. 

    I also have noticed that some of the links in that discussion are also out dated,  like the one on whether the viewer takes advantage of today's multi core processors, which seems to be based on V1, and most of the discussion is five years and 3+ Viewer versions old. 

    Could we please have some 2012 guidance on the WIKI on putting an SL capable system together?

    All those developers who keep cranking out new versions of SL, Phoenix and Firestorm. Perhaps they could post their sys info on the wiki, with a discussion on what works and what doesn't. Or at least a discussion of some of the newer technolgies  in gpus & CPUs and how that relates to SL.

    After stumbling through SL for almost a year on an integrated graphics card, I would hate to spend money on a new system, only to find out that I bought the wrong thing, or that the horrid lag wasn't because of my subpar compu, but an SL problem. 

    Does anyone out there have some recent stories to share about what components of  new builds work with SL?

  11. Dear Chose Few. Thank you for your excellent suggestions for overcoming my difficulties with Sculpties.  I finally got fed up with the Wings/Rokuro routine, and decided to bite the bullet and learn to use Blender. I have been making some progress, but it will take a while.

    I found these excellent tutorials, which gave me a good starting point, in case anyone is interested:

    This is a whole series, which has a collection of pdf tutorials, video explanations of the Interface, and concepts, and then some more advanced projects. So, if you hit a wall with one modality, you can jump over to another for awhile. But the important thing with this setup, is that it gives you a starting place, with out making you read the whole manual first.  http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

    This next one is a bit hard to follow, but it helped me understand the need to use the key strokes, rather than the mouse. 

    I haven't yet figured out yet the connection between SL, and Blender, though. I think you have to buy some addons. I have not found a clear expanation yet, only a few implications. 

     I didn't realize, though that sculpties are are no longer necessary. I am going to have to find out about arbitrary meshes. Can you make them inworld? Can you make them with Blender?  I have finally gotten Firestorm to work without crashing, although it still seems to have more lag than Phoenix, so I will experiment with meshes. Thanks for your help. 

  12. It seems no one has had an answer to this issue since July, 2011. This is unfortunate. I am having the same problem as Batty Raymaker, with one exception, which is, when I save the file as .bmp as instructed, it ignores the bmp, even if if I specifically give it a .bmp extension. Wings saves the file, instead, as a tga file. I am also having problems with the earlier part of Ms. Zelmanov's tutorial, in which she explains how to create a basic Rokuro image of a "messy candle," and to import it into Wings3d to finish the image, by adding dripping wax effects, using the tweak tool. My problem is that I can't get the tweak tool to work at all. Wings worked great on the previous tutorials for creating a simple mushroom shape using a sphere, and exporting it as a sculpty map, but upon importing files from Rokuro, the tweak tool won't stick, and all of the selected vertices have green stripes coming out, so that, when many vertices are selected, the image looks like a glowing green hedgehog.(I suspect the hedgehog effect is because I turned something on, that I can't now turn off.) Also, Wings hangs, and it takes hours to do the simplest thing. This does not happen when I just create a sphere in Wings and manipulate it there. I am thinking that, while Ms. Zelmanov's tutorials are excellent, she did write them a while ago; The sculpted prims tutorials are from June, 2007, and she is using an older version of Wings. If someone could enlighten us on how changes in Wings have affected procedures in the tutorial, I would be grateful.     It's a shame she's not writing any more. I guess everyone has to move on at some point.  She wrote some of the best tutorials out there, esp. for making clothing, but now some of the information is out of date. If I were more clever, I would update them.  FYI I'm using Win7 64bit. Could this also be a problem?

  13. Hi, I wanted to respond to this, because I had a similar problem.   I solved it by installing the Phoenix viewer and using that. It seems to be much more compatible with my system, which is 64 bit Win7 and ATI HD 4200, which, according to SL viewer documentation, aren't really compatible with the Linden viewer. So, if you have a sub-par graphics card, an older compu, or a 64 bit OS, I recommend trying Phoenix. It can't see mesh, but word has it their new Firestorm viewer will be mesh ready eventually. It's in Beta now. 

    For the first time, I can see where I'm going when I fly, and I can see all the cool effects I couldn't see with the Linden Viewer, because I had to turn my graphics settings down so low.  I didn't lose any $L or inventory. You can install them side by side. The only problem I had was that Phoenix requires avatars to have two names, so if you don't have a last name, use Resident for your last name. Hope this helps. 

  14. Hi, Jane and Kayleigh, I am fairly new to SL as well, and I am also interested in teaching in SL. I am learning to build things and do some scripting. I have pretty good technical skills, but as I said, I am new to SL and still have a lot to learn. I would like to build my own space to bring my students to, and I would love to network with people who are teaching in SL, or who want to build a space, to share ideas.
