  1. As spring prepares to arrive, it's time to shake out some of our old, dated inventory and start looking to what is fresh and new. I will admit I was a late convert to mesh, as I was to tattoo layers. But as with that new feature, I am an official advocate how how amazing mesh can be. Mesh dresses were the biggest challenge for me because initially they required a shape tweak or two that I wasn't comfortable with. As sizing parameters have improved, I've found I can wear mesh dresses with little to no tweaks. For instance, this Miamai mini cocktail dress required no alteration of my shape. For the Baiastice mini dress I had to make a slight adjustment to my chest, but it was truly just a tweak, to perfectly fit into a medium. The large was far too big, and wearing mesh that doesn't come close to fitting just looks silly. Accessories and hair in mesh were my first loves and still continue to grow in my inventory. All of the hair above is mesh, and I'm also showing off some mesh jewelry from Maxi Gossamer - a creator I'd never heard of until someone pointed out the mesh jewelry on marketplace. Mesh can be a bit tricky, and if you find that you put mesh on an it seems to "dropping out" or not all there, try this. Go to ADVANCED menu, DEBUG settings. Enter "MESHMAXCURRENTREQUESTS" and increase that parameter to 100. Voila. Your mesh will appear like magic. 2. Hello spring! My most favorite season of the four. Everything is fresh, beautiful and reborn. When I think of fresh fashion for the new spring season, I instantly think of the beauty that you find in the most simple things. A simple cotton dress brushing against your legs in the warm breeze, or maybe a delicate pearl necklace, catching the light of a new day. Spring blossoms a crisp new image across the earth, and I believe the most uncomplicated spring attire can make the most impact in your wardrobe. Wild colors and bold patterns are oftentimes wonderful choices, but sometimes we forget how perfect the most simple items we own can be. During this delightful new season I will be on the hunt for lovely items that speak volumes in simple form. Take, for instance, this beautiful new release from Annette Voight, the designer behind the store Decoy. The dress is simplistic and classy, and features a color-changing belt as the perfect accessory without overpowering the entire ensemble. To stick to my simplistic theme I've paired the look with a delicate necklace from Caroline's Jewelry, a softly flowing mesh hairstyle from Magika and a fresh-faced skin from Belleza. This spring I encourage you to dress up and have fun with your wardrobe, but don't undervalue the grace and beauty in fresh simplicity. Sometimes our simplest ensembles are the ones that take on the most notice and make the biggest impression. Bio: Harlow Heslop has been an active member of Second Life for over four years. 3. The best advice I would give male bloggers is to decide the purpose of your blog and approach it as you would start a business in SL. Of course, there are a plethora of other decisions to make, but I only have 500 words or less! It’s YOUR blog, YOU make the decisions, and YOU set the tone. Before hitting the “publish” button in creating YOUR blog you need to come up with a disclosure statement. What do you WANT to blog? What can the viewer expect from your blog and what can they NOT expect? Do you want to blog like the popular and well-known (ir)regular guy who is consistent, dependable and fresh? Do you want to blog more modern fashion like everyone's loveable vampire Winter Jefferson? Or do you want to blog hilarious storylines with popping styles and a more edgy approach, like Bouncer? What are you willing or not willing to blog? YOU make these decisions. At first it’s a flattering feeling to finally win over a designer’s eye and you may feel the need to blog the hell out of it! But once you start rocking the blogosphere, can you keep up with the blogging? How many hours are you willing to contribute? These are all things to consider and put in writing and make a permanent page on your blog outlining all this so there are no confusions or upset designers/readers. Here are an example of a few… Mine, Strawberry Singh, Harlow Heslop. My blog is probably one of the more controversial, whereas you have your hardcore blogger types who feel “NO PHOTOSHOPING THE PICS, I can’t tell if it’s going to look like THAT on me once I buy it! Grrrr!” Or you have your bloggers who say, “Take more pics, I can’t see the back of that shirt! Grrrr!” Or, you have some, like me, who DO Photoshop some pics because I like to capture a cool image of what I BOUGHT (if I can) in a more artistic approach. (Of course, I win some and lose some).)SO… I have found I need to be sure and make that information known on my DISCLOSURE page, so if anyone yells at me I can kindly copy/paste a link and invite them to read my disclosure where I clearly state “I may sometimes photoshop some of my work.” That way, we all remain friends and keep getting invited to the next party! My last advice in male fashion blogging is probably the most-ignored. Guys… use a GREAT pose. Although the pose has nothing to do with fashion, IMHO, the pose can make or break a good pic. Choose a quality pose that makes your AV look like he has great body flow — it REALLY does add to the clothes you’re trying to show off. I have found some of the more quality male poses from Diesel Works, Muism, LAP and Adorkable, among many others. 5. When first approached to participate in this event, I was immediately excited to participate. Spring fashion is always full of a wide variety of fun colors and styles. But because pastels are not always my first colors of choice, I decided to stick with shades of blue, white, and khaki, as they portray the “fresh” theme of this event. I also wanted to show how you can use the same color scheme for several different looks while still maintaining the same theme. Hoorenbeek’s new mesh line includes these white slacks (also available in other colors). They come in a variety of sizes and rises and with different belt options to suit each avatar’s preference and stature. These pants are paired with a cool and breezy shirt from Mr. Poet that I tinted to my color of choice. SHIRT: Mr. Poet – Loose Shirt – White (Tinted) PANTS/BELT: Hoorenbeek – Mesh Pants – White (Low Rise/Fabric Belt) NECKLACE: Rustica – Antique Cabochon - Turquoise WATCH: Chronokit – Watch No.36 Dio - Silver Redgrave always has a great selection of apparel in many different colors. For a long time, this jacket was only available in black, but the recent release of several new colors makes this the perfect light jacket for spring. Pairing this jacket with other newly released polo, pant, and shoe colors from the old Redgrave El Ganso, makes this an easy one-stop-shop for a fresh spring look. JACKET: Redgrave – Suit Jacket - Creme SHIRT: Redgrave – Classic Polo Shirt – Light Blue PANTS/BELT: Redgrave – Herringbone Pants – Creme SHOES: Redgrave – Classic Sneakers - Creme After styling two looks that could either be dressed up or dressed down, I decided to go with a very casual, outdoorsy look. Spring is a great time to unpack your shorts and polo shirts and just have fun. These shorts from NSD paired with a white polo shirt from Aoharu make a light and airy addition to anyone’s spring wardrobe. The sweater is from Gizza’s new mesh line that has just been released, while the shoes are a favorite from FIR&MNA. 7. Spring rocks casual with effortless chic. Mesh is a season must-have! A perfect pairing is the very hip, slinky mesh jeans (free gift) with Opium´s latest release, Steampunk Jacket, in a sand tone, giving it a modern twist. Earrings are also from Opium, enhancing the look in conjunction with Emo-tions new hair. Don’t forget to add a spring flair to daytime with Diktator’s new Obey Spine heels. 8. I was flattered to be invited back by Linden Lab to do another fashion post. I wanted to show how accessories can really make an outfit really pop by showing three looks with the same base clothing pieces. The first item of clothing is a black bodysuit — everyone needs these, as they are a great staple and come in so handy when wanting a little something under a shirt. The shirt I am wearing is mesh, and a new release. I hope there are more of these styled items to come, as they are rigged very well, and have a lovely classic look to them. The pants are some straight rolled-cuffed twill pants, and the texture work on these is wonderful. This combination of clothing is definitely classic, and gives a perfect backdrop for some great accessories. I have put together three pics, and you can see all the lovely pieces and the great work that has gone into them. The first look is a more casual look, with some great oversized jewelry and nails. I went with flat shoes for this look, as you could definitely start off your day this way. The second look is more of an on-the-move combination — taking it to the streets so to speak — with the shoulder bag and leather cap to keep your hair from getting all messed up while you go about your day. Chunky statement earrings and these beautiful suede boots are pieces that you could leave on after removing the bag and cap, and slip into an early dinner date. The last look is definitely a lot dressier. This look has fashionista all over it — the strands of pearls, the statement ring, and those glasses that allude to mystery. This combination could go from boardroom to cocktails with friends or foe, and would have you charming your way through both. All of these items are worn with the beautiful new mesh hair called “Sarah,” which is a backcombed, low pony that can easily go from day to night also. I hope the looks inspire you to look deeper into your accessories and shoes folders, and rework some favourite clothing options to look exciting and new again. Also, now with the “add features” that we have, accessories have never been so easy to wear and layer to our own styling. 9. Watching the fashion scene for five years in Second Life has been fun and interesting. Many stores have developed into virtual fashion houses, with lines showing a particular influence in terms of cut, embellishment and color. There really isn't a difference between a line from one of these houses and a line debuting at fashion week in real life. In each case, the designs can vary from season to season, bringing about new looks — some that show trends in real life, others that set their own. Other stores have taken a different route, with content that is — while fashion forward — less “fashion house.” Similar to stores you might see at your local shopping mall, or on a street of boutiques, these are filled with items that run from businesswear to casual separates. Just as in real life, many cater to certain popular style genres, which range from bohemian to hip-hop culture. A wide variety of stores cater to particular lifestyles and role-play, providing more genres, from historical eras to retro-futurism. Part of the lifestyle segment includes avatars that can range from cybernetic appendage replacements to cute, tiny raccoons. I count all these as fashion — as fashion is how we choose to represent ourselves to others and identify with/within a group. This is were it gets more interesting — in the communities that support these! Second Life is such a diverse place — where anyone’s needs can be met and where you can find kindred spirits and new ways to express your inner self. There is so much to do and explore, as well as amazing creations and mini worlds within. While I love the steady flow of new seasonal lines from stores, the base of seasonal fashion is something that really creates a solid foundation for much of Second Life. What’s really interesting is that despite the global diversity of residents, the trends seem to follow the seasons of the Northern Hemisphere. This need for nature, and the rotation of the seasons, are strong pulls in this virtual environment — it drives exploration, shopping, and creation. Regardless of where we log in, and what surrounds us in our real lives, we look forward to this passing of time inworld, the seasons it brings, what transpires — and what inspires. 12. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead From dressing up our avatars to taking photographs to blogging, modeling, socializing and checking each other out, fashion is a cornerstone of fun in SL. But fashion can be more fun — it can benefit fellow residents. Since SL was born, people realized that the sale of content could not only go to people’s income but could also be used to raise funds and awareness for charities and worthy causes. This month — March 10 to 20 — Fashion for Life will make giving the most fashionable thing you can do. Across 10 sims with over 200 designers participating, it’s the opening event for the Relay for Life SL in SL. Over 300 residents will be participating to make this the charity event of fashion in SL. One-hundred percent of proceeds gathered from sales of specially-made and donated content, raffles, and gachas will go to the Relay for Life SL general fund, with everything going to the American Cancer Society. Last year Fashion for Life contributed over 5 million Lindens to the Relay for Life general fund. This was just a fraction of the $375,000 USD Relay for Life SL was able to send to the American Cancer Society, who supports cancer research, prevention, and patient advocacy around the world. Even more important, however, is that this very public effort is a reminder to our friends in SL who are touched by cancer that our support is behind them, whether they are a survivor, a caretaker, or a loved one. Just seeing us rally together gives them a lot of hope. Check out some of the beautiful pieces exclusive to Fashion for Life. Kimmera Madison made this beautiful dress and intricate jewelry exclusively for Fashion for Life. Based on our theme, “It’s Time,” the dress features an intricate laced-up corset bodice and flowing skirts in our signature colors of fuchsia and purple. The jewelry is made of clocks and watches. The saturated colors fit in on the 70s-themed Mondrian-styled sim, DreamSeeker Tijd, built by Nigel Riel. Angel6 Susanti decided to create a timeless piece to match the theme of Roscko Cobalt’s fantastic sim at DreamSeeker Czaswith an angelic “Timeless” dress, complete with wings. A bit of romance can be found on the Rathmeous Dagger-built DreamSeeker Epoque sim when you wear this gorgeous dress created especially for Fashion for Life by Mirja Mills. Many contemporary pieces will be sold as well. Take, for instance, this outfit from LeeZu Baxter, which includes a mesh skirt that will be sold exclusively at Fashion for Life. Shown at the DreamSeeker Volta sim, built by Troy Vogel and based on an Art Deco futureview, this chic ensemble is perfect for spring weather. Giving money to a charity and receiving the bonus of getting beautiful avatar fashion is a great benefit in SL. You have the fun of shopping while giving money, and that's the best fashion for the season! Harper Beresford is lead for Fashion for Life and writes about Second Life fashion on her blog “A Passion for Virtual Fashion.” Her work has appeared in Architectural Digest (Italy) and numerous other outlets.
  13. Spring 2012 will be all about embracing the innovative world of MESH in Second Life®. Mesh really is going to drive our community forward and offer our creators a platform to share things there were difficult or impossible through prims or sculpties. If you haven't really given mesh a chance, now is a wonderful time to explore this brave new world. Right now the MIX + MESH Fair is in full swing. From Feb. 25 through March 11, it's a fashion-centered event highlighting some amazing designers who are using mesh. AVENUE produced the event, which hosts numerous fashion shows, shopping and contests, showcased around a full mesh build. Nardya Rousselot is the mastermind of the stunning build, which you can visit today. Check out the wonderful possibilities mesh has, as a tool not only for fashion designers, but for all content creators in SL. TAXI to MIX + MESH Fair Mesh is really easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, and most designers supply several standard sizes to suit most avatars. The first outfit, a yellow jumpsuit by R.icielli, is a single mesh attachment worn with glitch alpha layer. The small size fit my avatar nicely. It moves and bends with your avatar in ways that were difficult with prims. I adore the color, and it's a great classic piece for any wardrobe. Add a few vibrant accessories and you can really make this look your own. Another great feature of mesh is the extremely detailed textures designers are able to create. Faint Paulse, of Ladies Who Lunch, has made great use of this with her new collection. It offers a seamless level of detail that previous system clothing made very difficult. This mix-and-match outfit includes a prim feather top paired with a patterned mesh skirt. Details like layered feathers add a whimsical and unique touch the outfit. You too can find the fun of mesh by exploring new builds, transporting yourself in the latest mesh automobile or discovering your own personal style using mesh fashions! 15. Spring: A time to wash away the monochrome hues of winter in a refreshing rain of color. We see the tapestry around us turn from gloomy grays, and spark alive with vibrant pastels, reds, blues, and greens. Flowers bursts forth from the land and paints the rolling hills with their blooming palette of color. As the world washes away winter's grays, so should we do the same to our wardrobes. Don't let the layers bog you down — peel them away and let the colors cover you like they are covering the springtime season! Spring is a time for activities — baby showers, weddings, holidays, barbecues, parties and vacations. You need to gear up for such occasions, which is a perfect opportunity to make a few "go-to" outfits so you are prepared for all of the springtime activities. Here are a few looks that I put together for this spring. I normally wear a great deal of red, as it is my favorite color. This spring I wanted to embrace more colors into my wardrobe. My first outfit is one I put together to wear for the following: A date at the docks The carnival A barbecue Sailing Any outdoor gathering Outfit 1 The second outfit is more fitting for the evening or nighttime. Whether you are going out with friends or on a date with that special someone, a little bit of layering can dress up a casual outfit like this. Spring nights can be chilly, and a jacket helps, as it is not only for warmth but turns a very casual outfit into casual-dressy. I love to wear bowties, and this gingham print reminds me of spring no matter the color, which made it perfect for this outfit. Spring Outfit 2 My final outfit is more formal. This would not be appropriate to wear to a spring wedding, however, so please keep that in mind. Unless the wedding party requests you wear white, you should never do so. White is clean and classy, and you can put any color with it — from a shirt to the accessories. Do not be afraid to mix up your color palette. Spring is vibrant and lively, and your wardrobe should be, too! Most importantly, have fun with your clothing. It is an extension of you, your personality and quirks, and the image you project is the one that comes to life when you embrace what you enjoy wearing. Enjoy your spring! 16. Fashion has a huge market in Second Life. There was a time when Second Life fashion was all about blingy shoes and prom dresses – seasons, or shall I say decades – behind the real-life fashion trends. But this has changed over the last few years. With the advancement of technology, people enjoying fashion blogging, and the increase in the number of content creators, there is this sudden burst of fashion exposure. Second Life is a diverse environment with residents from all around the globe; fashion in SL today has its own unique identity of fusion – a beautiful blend and combination of various styles from different countries. And we all know that fashion is all about being inspired by what we see around us – knowingly or unknowingly. If what we happen to see is a model walking down the runway, then so be it! Recently, while browsing through Vogue magazine’s Spring 2012 Fashion Guide, I picked up some spring 2012 looks and trends and got to thinking how to create these in SL. I was surprised to see that most of the predicted real life fashion trends were already in SL as part of many designers’ 2012 spring collection. So, without having to spend a lot of real-life money, you can get the looks with minimal effort. I’ve got some looks right here for you. I hope you like the looks! Androgyny has become an interesting twist to fashion styles and for the reason that all men and women possess both male and female qualities, AVENUE stylist Cade Nansen and I, have decided to pay homage to one of the less conventional ways of dressing up and showing how men and women can look equally striking in androgynous styles. Our first stride into Spring involves reworking the military look by injecting a vibrant color palette that will keep you looking cool and confident whilst taking charge of any given situation that demands for smart casual chic. 19. Mesh went grid-wide on Aug. 23, 2011, and I have been slowly and steadily falling in love with it. With just a handful of designers introducing mesh items in the beginning, I am happy to see more and more creators joining the mesh madness. Around that time I did a post on my own blog: Much Ado About Mesh, which gave a bit of an introduction to mesh: which viewers worked best for me at that time, what other bloggers were saying about mesh and which stores were currently offering it. Now, of course, a lot more people have joined the mesh revolution — so check out the Mesh Showcase in the Destination Guide for an updated list of designers offering mesh items. For my first outfit today, I definitely wanted to include something from coldLogic. Coldlogic is a collaboration among Damien Fate, Janie Marlowe and Zyrra Falcone. Damien Fate has always been one step ahead when it came to mesh, being one of the first designers to get in on the action. His full-perm mesh templates were extraordinary — and are still available on the marketplace. I found ColdLogic full of stylish and versatile designs. I settled on the pretty yellow reed dress because it really called out “spring” to me. Check out the coldLogic site for a look at more designs. Chain and Vine is another store that has been slowly pumping out some fantastic mesh styles at some of the best prices I've seen. You will find a growing collection of mesh items here at shockingly low prices. I picked up this light spring dress in green, but you can also find long skirts, dresses, minis, tanks and more. Check out the Chain and Vine site for a closer look. Ladies Who Lunch carries mostly high couture designs that are full of so much life and color. I am constantly amazed at the creations being pumped out of this stylish boutique. Almost all of the newest releases from LWL have been mesh, or have pieces of mesh incorporated into the design. The lower half of the skirt I am wearing is mesh, as are the shoes (which are not visible in the picture). Check out the Ladies Who Lunch site for more mesh. It's great to see more and more mesh designers picking up and using the Standard Sizing Package. It makes life easier, and I've discovered the small size fits me well for most of the items. Here are a few more stores whose mesh items I adore: Maitreya, SLink, Rebel Hope and LeeZu. I am also loving that my favorite hair stores are starting to incorporate mesh hair and hair pieces into their styles. Check out Truth, Exile, Elikatira and Wasabi Pills. Finally, don't forget to check out the adorable mesh avatar Flufee, created by Loki Dancer and available on the marketplace. Flufee is also somewhat of a celebrity and has his own YouTube channel where you can watch his mesh adventures. Check out the "Flufee on a Meshion" videos by Draxtor Depres for some hilarious meshy fun! I made a guest appearance in Episode 11! 24. The following article is from our "Capture Love" image contest winner, Spike Clémenceau-Silent! My original idea when joining the "capture love" contest was to show that there are many types of love in Second Life, which bring people happiness - not only the romantic kind. My current family Genesis Order Horde, is basically a close group of friends and family members who love and respect each other, while living in harmony and peace and welcoming anyone who wishes to live such a lifestyle while having fun - we are a clear example of it. Parenting has truly made me a better man. I have learned, as is reflected in the picture, to slow down and just look at the simple things in life, like a good comforting dawn or sunset with my son while having coffee and catching up about our things - something we try to do every morning - and has helped me to put things in perspective. I am a happy parent of two boys - my partner, Onyx, always corrects me and calls them men, but to me they'll always be my boys. Skylar, the eldest, is the one in the picture and my youngest is Seymour. Valentine’s Day is initially thought out to be for couples, but of all the love I experience day after day in Second Life, the one I feel truly blessed and privileged to experience is the one I feel for my son, he has truly changed my life and how I interact with Second Life. Backatcha Sky! Spike Clémenceau-Silent, Appointed Eldest of the Genesis Order Horde, a popular Second Life destination, DJ and co-owner of Club Se>en and columnist for Gayworldsnews & Sex and Second life, currently parent of two, Seymour Greymoon and Skylar Silent, founder and owner of SCS Designs. Rezzed in Second life on March 14 2010.
