  1. "Some sims have spheres like this larger than 500m... for things like deep space."

Okay, I get it now.  I have a friend who uses one of deep space to keep her skybox/house in.

Looking at a megaprim and not knowing that...hmmm.

Thank you for the straight forward answers Ceka, Perrie and Pussycat.

I have some learnin' to do about megaprims. :matte-motes-oh-rly:

  2. Please excuse my ignorance on this, but I was wondering, why one would need 48K +  prim pack?

I am asking honestly, not trying to be a snot. I'm certain there are some items that one could build using these prim packs, I just don't see it (I'm not a builder).

  3. "You can also make you a little change room with a cube in the center and link it all together..

Then sit on the cube and in the edit tools in the blue z axis column of the position section, type in 4000.0 and it will send you and the change room to 4000 meters up.."

Interesting ploy. I'll have to remember that.

    Thanks for sharing Ceka

  4. I just purchased mesh hair and found a "spike" thing going on. It appears as a line, a few pixels wide and it's length varies. It moves with the avatar, so turning around doesn't eliminate it.

At times, I've seen other avatars have the same problem, while not taking away from the avi's appearence, it does tend to be annoying to see.

What can cause this "spiking" and how does one remedy it?

    Problem solved.

I thank you Rolig. A little driver update is all it took.

  5. That is a surprising poll. Though not scientific in any sense, the three upper age groups were not expected. 1) 46-50 2) 41-45 3) 51-55 Everyone is young at heart, that's what makes SL an interesting experience. I'm hoping another poll be conducted in a year or two. It will be surprising to see how it's changed (if at all)

  6. Accept my apologies in advance if this has been covered andanswered before.

While wandering one day on the grid, I began to wonder if LL has ever done a demographic study of who uses and enjoys Second Life. Has a demographic breakdown ever been conducted or maybe someone, through observation, has broken down age groups (ages are not reflective, just examples)

    18-24

    25-36

    37-45

    46...

I think the point of my question is made.

I also ask because at one time, in the sim I use to call home, someone mentioned a former rp'er who in RL was in her 60's and residing in Italy. I had rp'ed with her before and I never would have surmised that.

Of course, this isn't a "NEED TO KNOW" thing, just one of those things that crossed my mind one evening.

  7. I'm noticing of late, others having problems seeing local chat. I'm having the same problems. Others can see what I chat in their chat window, but mine refuses to open.

If I open the chat box, I can see what I'm chatting and what others are saying, but it blocks my view of the sim. That sometimes takes care of the problem.

Is this just a temp problem due to lag or LL servers?

  8. I stopped using facebook.

It's nothing but a sales/promotional device used by businesses to push their products. Local news anchors always sound like they're begging when they say "Like us on facebook" or "win $500 if you like us on facebook. Some lucky winner will get $500".

Plus I found it to be a hodge podge of kitty shots and political leaning in one central location. Instead of emailing that picture of the cat hanging from a bar captioned "Hang In There" to all of your friends and clogging email servers, like spam that says I just won $1M in some faraway country, I just have to pay some small fees.

I think facebook is going the way of MySpace.

Sure, millions may have signed up but what's the current number of users (key being users)?

If facebook wishes to eliminate SL avi accounts, that is their perogative.

It'll probably come back and bite them.

  9. I was referring to the bot profiles I have been able to read, posts from others who have booted these intruders from their respective land. I indicated if a bot has a purpose for maintenance and grid upkeep, fine. I would hope the creator would indicate this in the bots profile. Sadly, the ones I have banned from my land have no such disclaimer.

One great example writes in their about section...

    Real World Biography

The beauty of life is, while we cannot undo what is done,
we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change.
So that every new moment is spent not in regret, guilt, fear or anger, but in wisdom, understanding, Honesty, faith, and love.

If you get a chance to check their feed, you'll see where I am coming from.

My post is not a blanket indictment of all bots. Never was meant to be nor was it inferred.

    So chill.

  10. If that's the case, I would hope that LL would place something on the bots profile informing all their purpose. I can see a legit reason there; grid upkeep and maintenance.

But to be honest, some of these profile feeds I have read from these bots don't place them in a very good light at all.

I place these bots on the same level as alts from those who just come to SL to start trouble. Get booted?, no problem.

    Just make another...and another...and another...ad nauseum.

Just like RL, morons exist everywhere.

  11. I was blessed to be given a little piece of land, in a private parcel, to build on and live.

I installed a security orb to keep possible griefers and trespassers away. I do like my privacy.

In the last month or two, those who have wandered in to my area and are not on the access list are have been quietly returned home. For each one my orb reports, I check their profiles. I'm finding a number of bots that are being booted.

    My questions:
Are bots required to be so identified as such by LL TOS? None of these profiles indicate them being bots. The way I see them as such is their profile feed and some who took the time to indicated it were downright to the point.

What is the purpose of a wandering bot? I understand that any bot on a sim can not be used to boost visit numbers and thus, must be ID'ed as a bot. These I have seen and understand their purpose.

I'm curious to others thoughts and opinions on the situation.

If this has been covered before, I apologize for the repeat.

FYI, any bots that my orb boots, I place on a ban list. Any innocent traveler who accidently wanders through gets a pass.

  12. I have noticed some avi's being security orb booted from my land. When I see the names, I tend to check their profiles.

A number of these booted turn out to be bots with comments left at their profiles showing displeasure.

"Bot Be Gone...Evil wins loser!", "His 2nd Life page says it all, 'powerful and secret' = a drongo wannabe. Well he's banned from Abrevert now too." and this good choice of words, "wait, i banned your bot ass already. how are you coming back?".

I may be showing my naïveté asking these questions:

Are they looking for security lapses or just showing that they can be annoying?

Last I was aware, I believed that SL REQUIRED a bot to be so identified.

What is the point of sending a bot to wander SL?

  13. I'm hoping someone can give me an assist in this matter.

It involves adding a name or insignia to a combat uniform (Combat Uniforms and/or Boots, 2012 Edition).

The manual describes that an edit can be done and provides the template and base layers via a zip file. I d/l'ed the file, but when I try to add a personal touch, it seems to affect more area than what I'm attempting to modify (name tag affects both the Omega name on the right breast and the name "tag" on the left). When I tried to do some simple editing, the Omega side goes grey and the name side shows as stretched and abnormally large.

I tried picking "select face" on edit and also tried "edit link" to show which side I am trying to fix, but both seem to have no effect on which side I'm trying to name.

    omega combat jacket_001.jpg

It appears to involve something more than a simple edit and I'm trusting someone here has done the type edit required and is familiar with a step-by-step explanation.

    Update:

Ok Ms Kidd, I can see where you are coming from. I didn't allow the mesh make up to enter my mind (went far over my head!!!) when I made the original post and was trying "select face" and "edit link", thinking it being a simple edit. Mesh is a whole new animal to me, as far as editing is concerned.

Obviously, a crash course in working with mesh is required on my part.

Perhaps someone can point me to a a YouTube or "Mesh for dummies...". thing?

  14. I'm shooting into the dark here, so bear with me.

I recently decided to begin my own streaming radio station on SL. The RP's I am currently into have me to the point of being burnt out and feel that it's time for a change of pace.

My problem is the DJ/User ID portion of Shoutcast. It asks for the pertinent info, but I can't find where to get the necessary sign in request.

I have placed the server information provided by the server provider, but am hung on to the actual name/password portion. I get an error message telling me that the information is incorrect, using my display name and SL pw, even using the sign in name at Winamp have been wrong.

Where does one get a DJ/User ID and Password to use Shoutcast?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

    I'm using Shoutcast 2.3.2

    UPDATE:

I understand what Karen is saying, however I'm still confused.

My concern is the DJ/User name and password window...

    sl help pic.png

What name/password goes to the appropiate slots?

As you can see, the name I thought I was to use is wrong (xxxx is for protection).

The info provided bt the server site did not indicate "clearly" what name or password to use. The url page, I have no problems getting into. It's completing the connection with the server thats putting up a fight.

Fortunately, I only paid for 24 hours time. So I'm not out a large amount of L$

I'm missing something here, what is it?

    UPDATE 2:

From my server sim (as I mentioned earlier, I paid for just 24 hours so the info is most likely expired now):

IMPORTANT ! These are your stream's informations.

Please copy the following infos into a notecard and keep them secret (KA Radio won't be held responsible of any trouble generated by the disclosure of these informations from you to a third party) :

     Third and final UPDATE:
After posting a question at Shoutcast website, I recieved this answer..

update the Source DSP to the current version as listed in http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=324877

without knowing the version of DNAS you're trying to connect to (which would be useful to know), on the Output -> Login tab, ensure the 'DJ/User ID' field is empty (unless you've been explicitly told to enter something in it).

if that doesn't help, try checking the 'use v1 mode' (aka legacy) option.

I went and d/l'ed the newest version (2.3.3) and it did not require a DJ/User ID, unlike ver 2.3.2.

I can't explain why, all I know is now the problem is solved. I ran my playlist on this machine and turned it on at a separate laptop. It was making the trip well.

Thank you Karen for your assist and patience in the matter.

  15. As some previous posters recommended, get a temp monitor. In my case, I use SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to keep on top of how warm my laptop is getting. Second Life will run your graphics chip/card hard and cause a rise in temperatures. Blowing out your machine should improve your temp problem immensely.

In my case, I was running on low settings, reaching 190-200f and my laptop would go black and be uncomfortably warm. I would have to force a restart.

After getting hold of some canned air, I blew every grill, input and the opened cd tray with air to clear any dust that might have accumulated inside. As a result, I now run about 110-115f while running SL, on high settings too. Fortunately, I didn't suffer any damage to my laptop (as I can see).

Keep in mind, these are only suggestions.

  16. A few weeks ago, I posted questions concerning my laptop over heating whilst running SL. Sometimes the temps would get as high as 200f for the core. One respondant said that was close to boiling water and made a few useful suggestions while another suggested getting Speedfan to assist in monitoring internal temps.

To make a long post short, I followed the suggestions and am happy to report that the internal temps now remain below 130f (120f-127f plugged in while lower when on battery only). And that's with the d/l of the new version of SL 4.6.1 and the graphics set at high. I lucked out seeing no real damage to my graphics area or chip.

Lately, I was thinking should the problem arise again, what area should I be concerned with FIRST?

The HD? The core or GPU?

It's uncomfortable to have a laptop sitting on my lap when the temps get up to 175f and climbing while enjoying SL.

Just throwing this out for future reference and to thank those who gave me an assist during the original problem.

  17. I've been having problems with my laptop blacking out during SL and having to restart the computer to log back on (see previous post in this forum)

Someone suggested I monitor the CPU temps with Speedfan, which I d/l'ed and installed. My computer innards tend to run up around 180f - 200f while using FS and I get similar results from Singularity, but the HD runs around 110f.

I understand there could be variables involved from machine to machine. I installed Speedfan in my other laptop and get the same temps.

    Are these normal temperatures?

    Just in case someone wonders...

    Win7

    HP Pavilion g6-1d21dx. (g6 notebook)

Processor: AMD A6-3420M APU witj Radeon HD Graphics 1.50 Ghz

    RAM 4.00 GB (3.48 usable)

    64 bit

    UPDATE:

Did a cursory check and cleaned ALL vents that I couid locate.  I tried to open the casing to get to the fan itself, but two screws are too tight, I decided to abandon that effort. Since cleaning ALL vents, the temps have dropped to an average now of 155f-170f, much more bearable than 200f-210f.

For what it's worth, when I say ALL vents, I mean not just the one on the side but also those on the bottom area adjacent to the battery door. AS for getting a cooling pad, I'm on it. Eventually, I'll get another desktop.

    Thanks all for the assist!

  18. Apologies if this has been covered and I missed it in search.

There are times when my SL experience goes well and times when in the middle of it all, the laptop screen goes black. I'm force to hold the on/off button down to turn the computer off and restart.

    My specs:

    HP Pavilion g6-1d21dx. (g6 notebook)

Processor: AMD A6-3420M APU witj Radeon HD Graphics 1.50 Ghz

    RAM 4.00 GB (3.48 usable)

    64 bit

Firestorm (with Singularity for back up. FS does have its moments). The same happens on Singularity too.

I run SL on it on AC power, it runs great (with some expected lag) then the screen dumps (times of blackness occurring varies). It does feel hot at the external monitor output, but when I use it on full battery power, no problems, other than the battery getting low in about 90 minutes.

I've reset my FS to default settings thinking maybe I'm overdriving the graphics chip.

Can anyone suggest a median setting I could use to minimize the black screen effect.

Maybe dumping the proverbial cache could help?

  19. Can anyone point anyone to an off mainsland sim that allows flying with out major lagging where one can enjoy the thrills of getting in the air and flying for a over a few sims and relax?

One I have located, had lag so bad I lost my helicopter in midflight and it was returned to my lost and found. Others have tried the same at the same airport with similar results.

It was explain to me that the owners don't restart these sims on a regular basis or clear out hight prim objects, hence the major lagging.

    Any suggestions?
