    Copyright confusion - help please

    Hi Cheri and Freya,

    I am Australian and can see why our indigenous people took this stance. Ayres Rock is very significant to them, both culturally and spiritually. The proposed book in question could be likened to someone taking pics of their teddy bear, say, on a Catholic altar or in silly places in a Jewish synagog. Very disrespectful! To non-indigenous people Uluru is just a big rock, so I can see how the problem arose. Anyhow, I for one am glad it was banned.

    As a brief update on my initial query, my friend has decided to progress with his book (not hospital themed), so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with :)

    Copyright confusion - help please

    Many thanks for the comprehensive, very helpful and speedy replies! It seems we were right and images of 3D assets will not impact copyright. Also the suggestion to add credits was a great idea.

    Not sure if my friend will progress his idea (btw he was not building a hospital, I just used that as an example), but it's best to be sure about the legal side of things just in case.

    Hi there,

    Here's a bit of a copyright brain teaser for any one who knows about this stuff.

    A friend of mine asked me this the other day ...

    If an avatar builds an environment on their own land (let's say a hospital) and uses other avatars' 3D assets to do so (stuff bought from marketplace like hospital beds), can they take photos of this environment and use the images as part of a book they intend to publish and sell in real life, i.e. a medical text book in digital and paper formats? Given it is only images of the original creators' assets that would be used, not the assets themselves, would this breach copyright?

    It would also be interesting to know if copyright would be breached given the same scenario, except the published book is free in real life, not sold.

    In trying to work this out I looked at LL's snapshot and machinima policy. If I am reading this correctly, it seems using photos of assets would be acceptable. But I am not a lawyer so perhaps I'm missing something and there's more my friend needs to know.

    Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    I am one of a small team who have just about finished creating a really crazy art sim called Funky Junk (LEA22). It's supported by a blog that's both fun and informative - the two go hand in hand. Although we are not officially open yet, the sim is already proving to be popular. We were hoping someone with creative flair and stong machinima expertise might like to capture the sim on film for us.

    Funky Junk (LEA22) is a new Linden Endowment of the Arts sim. It has a cool, trashy Club perched high on a hill top. We are still under construction but almost done and hope to open in about 2 weeks.

    Windows 10 - it's coming, it's free but is it compatible?

    Hi,

    I currently have Windows 7 on my PC and 8 on my lappy. Windows has an offer atm to book in for a free upgrade to windows 10. Does anyone know if Win10 will be compatible with SL and SL viewers? I am concerned about being an early-adopter in case there are problems, but a free windows upgrade is very tempting. Windows does state they'll enable a roll-back so if the upgrade is an issue I can go back to my earlier version. 

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Radio URLs to add to a a 50's Diner jukebox list. Help appreciated :)

    I am creating a 50's diner. I have added a jukebox that came with preinstalled radio stations (via a menu driven by a notecard list). My problem is none of the current stations are specifically 1950's or jukebox-ish. I'd like to add a few stations that match the theme to the top of the notecard list. I am looking for the URLs that work in SL, not just the radio station's general URL.  Any ideas?

    If you've not yet visited Daydream Island it's really worth seeing. As this video shows, there's lots to do and see and it's open to everyone. In addition to being an awesome sim, Daydream has an active group with over 2000 members. Explore; meet people; dance; date; visit the secret caves; check out the castle; swim; try out some fun, weird gadgets or visit the haunted dungeon.

    • If you are an experienced avatar creator who can make a quality skin and shape that's super close to the real thing, please get in touch! Examples of other "real" avi creations preferred, but not mandatory. The avi does not have to be mesh, it just has to look real.

    I am not sure if you see Marketplace like the image below, but I do. I can't shop either. There's no website formatting and no images on the site at all, except some advertising junk that looks like it's supposed to be an Ad banner. Let's hope it's a technical glitch that LL will fix soon.

    Help with media on a prim - it won't "stick"

    Hi there,

    I've added media (a website) to one face of a prim as part of a sign. It looks gr8 and all is fine until I leave the sim. When I return, the prim has always reverted to the standard ply wood texture and I have to reset the media. 

    The prim I am referring to is positioned behind another prim with an alpha layer. The alpha part is a cut out of a computer screen to give the impression that the image of the computer has a "live" display of the website on it. Could this be part of the issue? 

    I'd love to make this interactive - it's much better than a static sign. 

    Any ideas on why this is happening and how to make the media "stick" would be greatly appreciated.

    Seeking a coordinator for BIG multi-sim SL HUNT

    Hi there,

    WE HAVE A DREAM

    We are seeking the assistance of an experienced and creative SL event organizer / Hunt Expert (Guru). Our multi-sim SL destination has over 150 merchants and we want to run a BIG Valentine's Day Hunt in 2014.

    THE ROLE

    The Hunt Guru will oversee all aspects of the Hunt: communication, planning, merchant involvment, setting up the Hunt, advertising it and running the event, as well as problem solving along the way. 

    SUPPORT

    To support our chosen Hunt Guru we have a Chamber of Commerce team in place comprising of Merchant and non-merchant sim residents. We have also done lots of initial planning work (including the Hunt requirements and supporting roles) and this info has been posted on a purpose-built Google Forum. Naturally, access to this info will be given to the sucessful Hunt Guru candidate. We have not yet shared the hunt info with our wider Merchant population because we want to fill this role first.

    WHY?

    Why do we need a Hunt Expert? Unfortunately we are all busy and none of us have the time required to set up a Hunt from concept thru to final delivery. However the members of the Chamber of Commerce do have the time to help out in a variety of ways and are committed to making this a fun and successful event.

    SHOW ME DA MONEY!

    In terms of payment, there will be a fee for participating Merchants and this will be used to remunerate the Hunt Guru. This means the more Merchants who are involved, the more the Guru will be paid. 

    INTERESTED?

    So if you have the experience, the time, are reliable, have a strong track record in coordinating successful SL Hunts and are interested in working with an enthusiastic, supportive team to get the job done, we'd really like to hear from you.
