I'd recommend one or other of the novels of Charlie Stross but it would be a spoiler. Wiliam Gibson's oeuvre would be worth a look as well.

@Ima: I am concerned because "hypothetically speaking" one might receive a warning for harassment from a Grim Moderator for, say, congratulating an Advisor on their pragmatic stance to the establishment of a GD substitute (which stance was subsequently undermined by a volte-face by the powers-that-be in providing an Off Topic forum) a supportive comment which was incorrectly perceived as sarcastic, presumably by an overly-sensitive person of rank. If the hoi-polloi are going to close ranks against the peasants then everyone should be concerned.

@Mags: I can't answer THAT question, but I believe that if we didn't HAVE to presume, the forums would be a much more civilised and open place.

Picture threads that transgress the PG requirement will still suffer moderation. I note that Storm is sailing close ot the wind with his tattoo image, and the consequent tempestuous response might get the thread downed even before it sets sail.

I don't think asking just one of them would necessarily obtain an accurate view of the situation, and of course Suella could always say that Suella didn't have mod powers, but she might be able to log on in the pesona of a Grim Moderator. Or maybe the Moderator of the day might feel inclined to trust RICs submitted by those of rank who felt harassed more than complaints from those without rank. It's a feudal system any way you look at it, with the pleb members at the bottom of the food chain.

@Medhue: Sorry about the typo in your name before - it was NOT intentional, honestly. I think I agree with you, except I wouldn't bring insecurity into it. I would rather bring that - as others here have noted - power corrupts, and my *REAL* concern is actually that those with higher ranks have HIDDEN powers (call me paranoid or a conspiracy theorist if you like, and I would be delighted to have a Linden state with hand on their heart that I am wrong) and can act as moderators, under a cloak of alt anonymity. I don't believe that the Lindens have hired fulltime moderators, nor have they repurposed others. It is cheaper and easier to give "trusted" residents- who are on the forums anyway - additional capabilities without identifying them specifically as ResMods, although I suppose that they might have changed the name and job description of some Scouts, but that fills me with even more trepidation, given their conflict of interests.

@Mags: I think it is dangerous to presume anything about a non-transparent system that is being touted as arcanely algorithmic, while probably in practice being in the gift of a Linden or two.

@Ian: I think that would make the Cartelians extremely happy - fresh meat!!!

@Madhue: It is not clear from your post whether you believe that it is those who believe that rank is important who have the insecurity issues, or those that are concerned about the marginalisation of those who are, unsurprisingly because of lack of experience, tyros. Would you like to be more specific?

The problem is that you can't just put those with "rank" on ignore on a blanket basis, because it is difficult to differentiate the brown-noses whose behaviour has been revised specifically to acquire status (as they see it) from those that have had it forced upon them, accidentally.

Agreed. Some graphical contradistinction is needed. Like different colour backgrounds or line boxes.

@Qie: Lexie has relaxed the restrictions on posting videos already. The rest of the "privileges" mean almost nothing, being functions that, like being a politician, if you are stupid enough to want to, you should be allowed to participate in them.

Congratulations Storm! You have found the way to grease the wheels of the forum, I see. Have you appealed to the Grim Moderator yet? You should really get your record cleansed as any disciplinary besmirchment could mean the next perceived breach sees your punishment escalated - and since your warning was about something that LL subsequently endorsed you should be receiving kudos not suspensions.

Marshall, is your own command of the English language less than satisfactory? Your response would suggest that. Have I said that I personally would say such a thing? Your reaction suggests you have emotional issues regarding the question which appears to cloud your judgment. This thread is attempting to identify what would be useful to foreigners. Since a large proportion of the residents of SL are uninterested in foreigners who are unable to make themselves understood effectively in English (please don't argue that this is not the case or you will be exposing yourself to further ridicule) it makes a huge amount of sense for foreigners to avoid annoying such individuals - not merely by wasting the time of the xenophobes, but because they would be wasting their own time as well. Morality, or whatever else it is that you are attempting to argue should be paramount, is irrelevant in practical terms. Get real!

Maxine, I think this represents a reasonable compromise on LL's part. It would be really stupid of them to sponsor an enironment which might reflect adversely on their business, but it would be just as shortsighted to censor informed critical feedback absolutely. If anyone wants to criticise LL publicly then they should find another venue to do so. I understand that Wasted has a whole website dedicated to explaining his position vis-a-vis LL - or at least, trying to.

I sincerely hope that RIC will not be required - but if it is, it should be processed in a fashion which is substantiable to the person being disciplined. I have every belief that this may prove the case in future.
