  1. Hi All,

Although Torley began this discussion with a tip on how to reduce lag by increasing bandwidth, in the interest of better "under the hood" understanding, I hope my question now regarding "total graphics memory" is related.

Which spec is more important for getting to optimum performance in SL--"total graphics memory" or "dedicated graphics memory"?  E.g., if my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4800 series with 1275 MB total graphics memory (or 1918 total graphics memory as x64), but only 512 dedicated graphics memory in either case, what is the target number to shoot for (upgrade to) for optimum performance in SL--assuming the bandwidth is maxed as Torley suggested....and the cache is at 1000?

  2. Hey Hey, Harry (smile)  I think you and I are on the same page--even if you have not meditated or are spiritual.  That is my writing style--addressed to those to whom you were speaking--not to you.  My apologies, I may have been too poetic.  LOL!

But, again, you made more comments  I COMPLETELY agree with, e.g.,

"All I am saying is to fricking enjoy SL and enjoy with your friends and all in there, isn't that what SL is about? The majority isn't even reading this blog posts, they are simply enjoying and having fun or having drama in sl lol. shopping, building, designing, argueing, loving... rping, playing games...etc.."

And, as you also said--be constructive in addressing issues/problems.

What I enjoy most in SL is the exploring, watching sunsets, horseback riding, loving my friends here, decorating, landscaping, learning more about digital technology, and mediating by my mountain and tropical lakes (smile) ...

But what disturbs me most is the negative tone of the blogs that are open to the general public.  If I read these blogs, I would not open an SL account....so I spoke today.  But I am aware of and understand the "business" of SL as a player in the entertainment industry--nationally and globally--as you seem to as well.  And in spite of those conditions, I find joy and comfort in Second Life in spite of the turmoil and chaos inherent in change, just like you..... And, I'm on my way back there now too.... It's much more fun than this blog!  LOL! My life is so much better since I have the option of enjoying SL and I'm sure everyone else is better off too...but if you follow this blog, as an outsider or insider, you would not know it.

    Best regards to All!

  3. Thank you Harry, for your Global Perspective and Wisdom-driven Perceptions. Three of your statements are seeds for mediation for understanding, believing, feeding, and maintaining the manifestation of the Neal Stephenson dream that was born in Linden Labs Research as an attempt "to improve the human condition."  Are we not all better today than we were before the genesis of SL?

"Stop living the dream that SL and LL have endless resource for a driven economy. LL is most likely hit by the crisis harder than a lot of companies, and you should all be proud on us, residents but also at the LL for still being here."

"Remember that SL is a 'luxury good' to the majority... meaning we only spend money in sl world unless we can spare it from our rl needs! So this means the rl economy first needs to recover, and then SL will follow."

"Remember that LL is a real life company, competing in the real life economy... they are operating from a country that has been hit incredibly by the crisis with unemployment rates of 10-15%!"

So, fellow SL citizens, Remember the Dream, mediate on Harry's statements, tie a knot in your ropes, hold on--with productive thoughts and actions. Is there any among us who can generate the captial investment to support a user-created community?  This is a radical business model!  Let's not become Rome, and die from within.

  4. Hi Kim and Welcome!

With a former role in Global Brand Management, I'm sure you are more than a marketing manager.  You are a strategist with good insights.  You know how to conduct your research, identify issues and trends.  But just for the hell of it, I'd like to ask--Has the idea of marketing SL in the "literary" magazine sector and in conjunction with the e-book market come up?  E.g., promoting SL's "official guides" for e-readers and the I-Pad....  Just thought I'd throw that radical idea out there.  ;-)

(For the record, I came to SL without hesitation after reading an article in The Atlantic and some of the Stanford research papers by Bailenson and Yee.  I'm still a newbie of sorts--high end-LOL, but came in 2007, but since finishing up a social science degree program, have only been active since November 2009--renting properties, exploring, loving, learning, and growing; and I'm here to stay--in spite of the Viewer 2.1 issues.  I'm not a programmer--(but I've begun to study) and recently because of the Viewer 2.1 issues, I've been getting acquainted with the Knowledge Base and regularly reading the postings of these wonderful and talented SL veterans.  They know the history--no doubt; but I can see a future--because I am so new, have strong scholarly inclinations, and believe there is an audience of women and men--of all age groups who still don't know that SL exists, but are intellectually primed to become addicted like me.) ;-)

    Best to you.
